Last night, Adolf Hitler's junior posts were absolutely full of wonderful moments and impassioned speeches and triumphant, victorious coronations. And I looked upon me, and the brightest stars that ever existed, took a turn to welcome me and to brighten up my nights and days. And I took a shower, and soap appeared. There were bubbles.

It was magical.

" North Korea's Kim Jong Un makes birthday visit to China for meetings with President Xi Jinping .  "

" SEOUL – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is in China, where he will meet with President Xi Jinping, Chinese and North Korean state media reported on Tuesday.

The trip, which is Kim’s fourth to China, came at the invitation of President Xi Jinping, according to news agency Xinhua, and will last until Thursday.

Kim was accompanied by his wife, Ri Sol Ju, and a delegation of high-ranking North Korean officials and traveled by private train across the border to China, North Korean newspaper Rodong Sinmun reported.

The North Korean dictator will be celebrating his 35th birthday on Tuesday.

Kim’s visit comes in the wake of an announcement on Sunday by President Donald Trump that Washington and Pyongyang were in negotiations over a location for a second summit, saying that it would be revealed “probably in the not-too-distant future.”

A South Korean newspaper reported on Monday that Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, was being considered as the site for the next Trump-Kim summit. Citing high-level sources in Seoul and Washington, Munhwa Ilbo reported that officials from the U.S. and North Korea have met in Hanoi to discuss scheduling the meeting.

Previously, Washington has suggested Vietnam, a communist nation with a rapidly developing economy, could serve as a model for North Korea in the future.

During a visit to Hanoi in July, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on North Korea to replicate Vietnam’s economic “miracle.”

“In light of the once-unimaginable prosperity and partnership we have with Vietnam today, I have a message for Chairman Kim Jong Un: President Trump believes your country can replicate this path,” Pompeo said on that visit.

Kim’s current trip to China may be further evidence that a meeting with Trump is getting closer to reality. The North Korean leader went to China before and after his summit with Trump last June.

While the isolated state has dramatically raised its international profile over the past year, China remains North Korea’s closest ally and most important trading partner, accounting for 90 percent of its exports since 2000, according to a report from the Korea Development Institute.

The visit by Kim allows China to show the international community that it still plays a major role in North Korean issues, said Lee Seong-hyon, director of the Center for Chinese Studies at The Sejong Institute, a Seoul-based think tank.

“A visit like this is a very good occasion for China to prove to the world that it’s not sidelined,” Lee said.

Beijing may also be using this meeting with Kim as leverage in its ongoing trade war with Washington, which imposed tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese goods, causing China to retaliate with tens of billions of dollars in tariffs of its own. A U.S. delegation is currently in Beijing for two days of talks as the world’s two largest economies are looking to strike a new trade deal.

“China might use this occasion to nudge Kim to be more willing to make concessions in denuclearization steps as a diplomatic favor to Washington,” Lee said. “That will be seen as a goodwill gesture that China is on the same page with the United States on North Korea issues.”

A second Trump-Kim summit would seek to push forward a diplomatic process that has stalled out since their June meeting in Singapore.

While that meeting produced a declaration that North Korea  would work toward a “complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula,” details and a timeline for carrying out the agreement remain vague.

Pyongyang is looking for relief of punishing international sanctions in exchange for steps it has already taken, such as dismantling a nuclear testing site, while Washington is holding out for complete denuclearization.

Kim reiterated a call for sanctions relief on a televised New Year’s Day address, saying he was ready to meet again with Trump “anytime” but warning the U.S. not to test North Korea’s patience over the sanctions, threatening that it may have to find a “new way” to defend its interests.

Trump said on Sunday that sanctions would remain “in full force” until North Korea provided “very positive proof” of results.

While the birthdays of Kim’s father, previous “Supreme Leader” Kim Jong Il, and grandfather, North Korean founder Kim Il Sung, are celebrated as national holidays, Kim Jong Un’s birthday is not.

The only example of Kim being honored in public on his birthday was in 2014, when former NBA star Dennis Rodman sang “Happy Birthday” to him before an exhibition basketball game in Pyongyang. "

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/kim-jong-un-meets-xi-tours-a-c...

" Kim Jong Un meets Xi, tours a Chinese medicine plant, then goes home.   "

" BEIJING — It was billed as a four-day trip, but in fact North Korean leader Kim Jong Un spent barely 27 hours in Beijing.

Kim attended a banquet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the Great Hall of the People, the plush ceremonial building on one side of Tiananmen Square, on Tuesday night — his 35th birthday. During the dinner, Kim and Xi, together with their wives, enjoyed a “grand variety show” to mark 70th anniversary of their countries’ diplomatic relations, according to South Korean media reports.

On Wednesday morning, Kim visited a traditional Chinese pharmaceutical company inside the Yizhuang Science and Technology Park in the southeast suburbs of Beijing.

The 300-year-old Tong Ren Tang Chinese Medicine Company is one of China’s most famous pharmaceutical companies, producing medicines using bee products including honey, pollen and wax.

It stood in stood in stark contrast to the more high tech sites — China’s Silicon Vally, a science lab and a transit control center — that Kim toured last year.

Then it was time to see Xi again. They had lunch at the state-run Beijing Hotel, a place where Xi’s predecessor, Mao Zedong, once entertained Kim’s grandfather. Kim Il Sung, the founding leader of North Korea, loved the Chinese food at the hotel so much that he sent a stream of chefs to study there, according to the book “Legend of Beijing Hotel.”

His private train pulled out of Beijing shortly after 2 p.m.

It turned out North Korea’s announcement of a four-day visit included traveling time. The train between the Beijing and Pyongyang takes more than 20 hours.

The Chinese government, other than confirming the visit was happening, has not released any information about the meetings. But Kim’s itinerary could be pieced together through motorcades and security cordons and traffic jams.

The North Korean leader’s relatively light schedule might be a reflection of the fact that these visits have become somewhat commonplace. The two didn’t meet even once during the first five years they were both in power. Now Kim has crossed the border into China four times in the last 10 months.

But more likely, it is a reflection of a delicate diplomatic balancing act that the young leader is now trying to strike as he prepares for his second summit with President Trump.

Kim and Trump are expected to announce the details soon, amid complaints from both sides that the other is not living up to the agreement they reached in Singapore in June. The United States is unhappy with the lack of progress toward denuclearization, while the North Korean regime wants immediate relief from the crippling sanctions imposed in 2017 as punishment for its nuclear tests and missile launches.

Add to that seven decades of enmity between North Korea and the United States, and five years of disdain between Kim and Xi. Plus, there’s the trade war between China and the United States.

Some analysts say that Kim is now trying to play Trump and Xi off against each other. But others say that there are limits.

“Kim still wants the sanctions lifted. He may want to encourage Xi to get on the phone and lean on Trump,” said Bonnie Glaser, a China expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. But trying to play them off against each other will leave Kim the loser, she said.

“The Chinese have always looked at North Korea through the lens of their competition with the United States, so they want to make sure their interests are protected,” she said.

China has repeatedly said the visit was about strengthening cooperation and exchanges.

“There is no doubt that Chairman Kim Jong Un will have an in-depth exchange of views with the Chinese leadership on deepening relations between the two parties and two states as well as on international and regional issues of mutual interest,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said as the visit began.

Some analysts say that North Korea and China could be strengthening their relationship to try to put pressure on the United States for their own reasons: North Korea to get early sanctions relief, and China to help resolve the trade war.

But others point out that the mistrust between Xi and Kim runs deep.

Kim has appeared to resent North Korea’s reliance on its much bigger neighbor, and spent his first years actively trying to lessen his regime’s economic dependence on China. Some 90 percent of North Korean trade goes to or through China, and China is the only country with both the interest and the funds to prop up the North Korean economy.

For the first five years that Kim and Xi both held office concurrently, Kim did not make the traditional socialist pilgrimage to Beijing, apparently trying to keep the Chinese leadership at arm’s length. This came despite Xi’s predecessor, Hu Jintao, backing Kim’s succession.

For his part, Xi seemed to sour on his counterpart, who is 30 years his junior, after Kim’s early brazen actions.

Kim had his uncle, a man responsible for North Korea’s economic relations with China, executed at the end of 2013. Then he proceeded to launch a series of increasingly advanced missiles, including on days when Xi was hosting high-profile international forums.

Now the two are trying to pretend that those five years didn’t happen, said Adam Cathcart, an expert on Chinese-North Korean relations at the University of Leeds.

“The dissonance between that experience and Xi Jinping having to make believe that Kim Jong Un is a prodigal son, who will henceforth and forever operate without harming China's national interest or Xi's political survival, is of course apparent,” he said.

For its part, North Korea remains wary about being too dependent on China, while China wants stability, said Glaser.

Both sides have their reasons for engaging now, but that doesn’t mean either will forget their recent history. Case in point: Xi had said he would make the return visit to Pyongyang, hinting it would be by the end of last year.

“What do the North Koreans have to do before they get a Xi Jinping visit?” Glaser asked. "

" Marc A. Thiessen: Trump won the night and Schumer and Pelosi lost .  "

" President Donald Trump did something Tuesday night that he has rarely done since taking office: He used the presidential bully pulpit to reach beyond his hardcore base of supporters to make his case to the American people as a whole.

Speaking from the Oval Office for the first time during his presidency, Trump embraced our country’s tradition as a nation of immigrants, declaring “America proudly welcomes millions of lawful immigrants who enrich our society and contribute to our nation.” He then offered a cogent explanation for why he believes we face “a humanitarian crisis — a crisis of the heart and a crisis of the soul” along our southern border.

He pointed out the human cost of our broken system to illegal migrants themselves, expressing compassion for the “children (who) are used as human pawns by vicious coyotes and ruthless gangs” and the “women (who) are sexually assaulted on the dangerous trek up through Mexico.” He shared heartbreaking stories of Americans killed by criminal aliens who had no right to be here — including a police officer in California who was murdered, a 16-year-old girl who was brutally stabbed in Maryland and an Air Force veteran who was raped and beaten to death.

“I’ve held the hands of the weeping mothers and embraced the grief-stricken fathers,” Trump declared. “I will never forget the pain in their eyes, the tremble in their voices, or the sadness gripping their souls.”

And he laid out his solution, which he explained was “developed by law enforcement professionals and border agents” and includes funds for cutting-edge technology, more border agents, more immigration judges, more bed space and medical support — and $5.7 billion for a “physical barrier” that he called “just common sense.” Without naming her, Trump responded to the absurd charge from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., that a wall is “immoral.” Democrats voted repeatedly for physical barriers until he was elected president, he noted. If a wall is immoral, Trump asked, “why do wealthy politicians build walls, fences and gates around their homes? They don’t build walls because they hate the people on the outside, but because they love the people on the inside.”

The president did not unilaterally declare a national emergency. Instead, he called for compromise and said, “To those who refuse to compromise in the name of border security, I would ask: imagine if it was your child, your husband, or your wife, whose life was so cruelly shattered and totally broken?”

He was, in short, presidential.

Democrats insisted on equal time, which is highly unusual for presidential addresses other than the State of the Union. It was a mistake. In contrast to Trump, Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer of New York came across as small and intransigent.

While Trump spoke calmly and rationally from behind the Resolute Desk, the Democratic leaders accused him of “pounding the table” and having a “temper tantrum.” While Trump told human stories, they complained about process. They accused him of arguing that the women and children at the border were “a security threat” when he had just explained to the American people that they were victims, too. They charged him with using the “backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear and divert attention from the turmoil in his administration.” They were partisan and petty, while Trump came across as reasonable and even compassionate.

To normal Americans watching in the heartland, and who are not steeped in Trump hatred, the president must have seemed like the adult in the room. And, most important, Pelosi and Schumer failed to use the one word that millions of Americans were longing to hear — compromise. But Trump did. That is why the president won the night. Schumer and Pelosi appealed to their base, while Trump made an effective appeal to persuadable Americans.

Until now, Trump has owned the 18-day government shutdown that prompted this address, because he’s the one who started it. But if Democrats continue to attack him, and won’t entertain any compromise, soon the shutdown will be all theirs — because they’re the ones who have refused to end it. "

" The Right’s Resistance . "

" They are unalterably supportive of Donald Trump’s presidency, flawed vessel or not.  "

By Daniel Henninger

" The reasons offered for why Donald Trump won’t win re-election in 2020 continue to pile up. His approval rating is stuck, seemingly forever, below 45%. The Wall Street Journal/NBC poll puts the percentage of voters who say they’re likely to vote for him at 38%, while some 52% currently prefer a Democratic candidate.

Numbers like that are why every Democrat and your grandfather is jumping into the presidential race. It’s why the Pelosi-Schumer tag team is chest-thumping over the border wall.

Finally, the truest weather vane of the political winds is freshman Sen. Mitt Romney’s maiden diatribe against President Trump in the Washington Post. Mr. Romney’s denunciatory op-ed was a politician sensing that this presidency is—his words—“in descent.”

The anti-Trump betting could be right. Much of the country is exhausted with Mr. Trump’s manic personal style and may vote for some downtime when choosing the next president.

But that Romney op-ed served one useful purpose: It reminded us why neither Mitt Romney nor anyone like him will take the Republican nomination away from Donald Trump.

One of the abiding mysteries of recent political history remains how the blunt and brutal character standing on the GOP primary stage in his fire-engine-red tie beat the skilled politicians alongside him. You can find the answer in Mr. Romney’s Washington Post article.

“A president,” Mr. Romney intoned, “should unite us and inspire us to follow ‘our better angels.’ ” And then he said: “I do not intend to comment on every tweet or fault. But I will speak out against significant statements or actions that are divisive, racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, dishonest or destructive to democratic institutions.”

You could not make up a more explicit pander to the prevailing political zeitgeist, or conventional wisdom, on Donald Trump—racist, sexist, destructive to democratic institutions. This is a kitchen sink of anti-Trump buzzwords. And the enduring reality two years after Mr. Trump won the presidency is that more U.S. voters than the conventional wisdom will admit just don’t care.

For two years, this column has received emails virtually every week from readers who have been along for the entire Trump ride. Some love him, others abhor him.

But among the most intriguing on this political odyssey are those in recent months who have been at pains to say they don’t need more descriptions of what a crude, often insufferable boor Donald Trump is. They know that. I’ll let one of them explain. The reference to “nutburgers” is his summary of the cultural and political left in America:

“When I see long-hoped-for ‘Resistance’ to those nutburgers from Trump—which I did not see from Nixon, Ford, Bush 41 or Bush 43—I am unalterably supportive, flawed vessel or not. It’s not the man, it’s the resistance that binds us to him.”

This is the voice of the resistance on the right. These aren’t only dislocated people living inside the Trump “base” in places like hollowed-out Wilkes-Barre, Pa. This sentiment has been building for decades. Its scale is suggested by the degree of Trump outrages these voters have been willing to discount on behalf of a larger cultural and political cause.

What exactly is their problem? In our time, it takes the form of the left’s cultural triumphalism on matters of identity, race, gender and indeed assimilation, or “the American idea.” If Donald Trump or any other political figure challenges these ideas, some media figure will call it a dog whistle.

Mitt Romney and virtually all Republican politicians entertaining runs for the presidency simply will not stand up to this dominant status quo. They just won’t do it. Instead, they address these matters in a kind of tiptoeing careful-speak. Meanwhile, any Democratic candidate, notably a so-called “serious” moderate such as Joe Biden, must pay obeisance to these ideas or get out of politics.

As to appeals to our “better angels”—typified by the Romney op-ed or anytime John Kasich speaks—history shows that the cultural left simply pockets these genuflections and then pushes its army forward. This history of bad faith—the identity left’s takeover of the campuses being Exhibit A—has created the right’s resistance, which in 2016 defaulted to Donald Trump and still does.

Anyone thinking of challenging Mr. Trump in the New Hampshire primary will have to show they understand, and would fight for, voters who don’t care about “the man” but care deeply about the nation’s cultural direction. Which means being willing to accept exclusion and ridicule by the media trolls. Don’t hold your breath.

It is possible Mr. Trump will personally grind down enough people to make him a one-term president. Still, we hope no one feigns shock in 2020 if, despite everything, at least half the electorate quietly opts for the incumbent over what the Democrats have come to stand for. The resistance on the right is real, with the presidency the only outlet remaining for their vote.  "

Fox rocks, dude! Don't let the opposing viewpoint scare you so much.

I'll give you a cookie if you can make it past 00:37 on this one:
