" Kim Jong-un to meet Moon Jae-in at Korean border for summit "

" Kim Jong-un is set to become the first North Korean leader to cross into South Korean territory since the end of the Korean War in 1953, as final details are put in place for the summit.

South Korea said President Moon Jae-in would personally meet Mr Kim at the border at 09:30 (00:30 GMT) on Friday.

The historic summit will focus on the North's recent indications it could be willing to give up its nuclear weapons.

Talks are also proposed between Mr Kim and US President Trump by early June.

Mr Kim is set to cross the military demarcation line - a clearly defined marker of the official land border between the territories. He will, however, remain within the Demilitarised Zone.

Seoul has warned reaching an agreement aimed at ridding Pyongyang of its nuclear weapons will be "difficult", because North Korea's nuclear and missile technology has advanced so much since the sides' leaders last met more than a decade ago.

"The difficult part is at what level the two leaders will be able to reach an agreement regarding willingness to denuclearise," South Korean presidential spokesperson Im Jong-seok said.

The meeting - the third of its kind following summits in 2000 and 2007 - is the result of months of improving relations between the two Koreas, and paves the way for a planned meeting between Mr Kim and US President Donald Trump.

Mr Kim announced last week that he would suspend nuclear tests for the time being. The move was welcomed by the US and South Korea as a positive step, although Chinese researchers have indicated that North Korea's nuclear test site may be unusable after a rock collapse following its last test in September.

As well as addressing Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions, the leaders are expected to discuss a path to peace on the peninsula to formally end the 1950-53 Korean War, and a series of economic and social issues.

South Korea and the US say they are suspending annual military drills for a day while the summit takes place.

How the summit will unfold
Every detail of the summit has been precisely planned - from the timetable to the dinner menu.

Mr Moon will meet Mr Kim and his delegation of nine officials at the concrete blocks which mark the demarcation line on the border, Mr Im told reporters on Thursday.

South Korean honour guards will then escort the leaders to a welcome ceremony at a plaza in Panmunjom, a military compound in the demilitarised zone (DMZ) between the two countries.  "

" North and South Korea are inching closer to peace — and analysts are going back to the fall of the Berlin wall to work out what it means for stock markets   "

" "When the Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989, it triggered significant excitement about the outlook for the economy on the back of potential reunification. The equity market rallied for around two months, with the DAX index climbing 28%," Morgan Stanley noted.

However, that jump ended up being a huge overreaction, with stocks falling sharply soon afterwards. It is possible a similar pattern could emerge in Korea, the team say.

"One of conventional behaviors observed from equity markets is that they have a tendency to exhibit sharp rallies on major catalysts without properly incorporating the risks and impediments into the measurement," they wrote.

"An event like the resolution of geopolitical risk related to North Korea could be such a catalyst, in our view."

Did you catch this O' cherry O' cherry picked highlight, tater?

He acknowledged that his personal attorney Michael Cohen represented him in “this crazy Stormy Daniels deal.”
The president previously claimed he was unaware of Cohen’s hush-money payment to bury Trump’s reported affair with porn star Stormy Daniels. On “Fox & Friends,” Trump tried to distance himself from his longtime personal attorney, saying that Cohen does only a “tiny, tiny fraction” of his “overall legal work.”

But in the process, he admitted that “he represents me with this crazy Stormy Daniels deal, he represented me.”

Daniels’ attorney Michael Avenatti, appearing on MSNBC at the same time, called it “a hugely damaging admission” and “another gift from the heavens.”

When “Fox & Friends” pushed back by noting Trump’s longstanding ties to Cohen, the president responded that he has “many, many attorneys, so many you wouldn’t believe.”

Trump’s comments were quickly used against him: Hours later, federal prosecutors cited them in an ongoing legal case over a review of documents seized during FBI raids targeting Cohen.

" From Parkland to Waffle House
Society ‘dropped the ball’ on Nikolas Cruz and Travis Reinking. A hero picked it up.  "

By Daniel Henninger

" The death toll at a Nashville Waffle House stopped at four because James Shaw pushed back.

Mr. Shaw ran toward shooter Travis Reinking out of an instinct for self-protection. “I acted in a blink of a second,” he says. “It was like: ‘Do it now. Go now.’ I just took off.”

He says he’s no hero, but men have been awarded the Medal of Honor for acting on the same blink-of-an-eye instinct. Mr. Shaw is not only a hero, but an object lesson in what America once took for granted but no longer does.

Over a long time, going back decades, the opposite instinct became the norm in the United States when confronted with threats.

The threats could be large, like school shootings and terrorism, or they could be small, daily assaults on the most basic civilized orderings of everyday life. Such as 14-year-old girls using four-letter words.

We used to push back instinctively. Then, we routinely began to step aside.

The new instinct—don’t do it—happened for all sorts of reasons: You’ll get in trouble with the lawyers. Somebody else is supposed to take care of these things. There must be a better way to understand this problem. Eventually, the simple answer of a James Shaw—“Do it now!”—just died.

That may be changing. There is evidence that people in positions of social authority are rediscovering the value of pushback.

On the same day the Waffle House shooting happened, The Wall Street Journal published a story with the headline “Schools Take Zero-Tolerance Approach to Threats After Parkland Shooting.”

It reported that school officials around the country “are warning parents and students in memos, community meetings and school assemblies that language perceived as threatening, even done in jest, could land younger students in juvenile detention centers and older ones in jail with criminal records.”

You read that right. Forget the chat in the school counselor’s office. Your next talk will be with the folks at the precinct house. The squad car is waiting at the schoolhouse door.

A return to the 1940s? We could do worse. And you know that we have when the only solution left is turning schools into armed sentry posts.

A prosecutor in Macomb County, Mich., said: “If you threaten a school, you are going to be charged.” Beyond common sense, the reason is astonishing: Since the February Parkland shooting, 54 students in Michigan have been charged for making threats against schools.

Up to now, apparently, you could shoot your mouth off like this—threatening classmates or the entire school—and get off with what in our times has become the one-size-fits-all excuse: “What’s your problem? I was kidding.”

Amy Klinger of the Educator’s School Safety Network told the Journal, “There are kids being arrested today that would have not gotten arrested for the same thing in January. We have come to some sort of place where people realize you can‘t say that stuff.”

After decades of social mayhem, we have indeed come to some sort of place. Better late than never.

Pushback is a social virtue. Its utility is a society’s self-preservation. Pushback from people in positions of authority—school principals, university presidents, the cops, parents—has always been the ballast against disorder in a free society.

If you stepped over a line—and a general consensus once existed on where those lines were—a small personal price was paid, if only in embarrassment for one’s parents. (Please, no false analogies to Maoist social-media shaming.)

That consensus fell apart. In the 1980s, sophisticates laughed at First Lady Nancy Reagan’s antidrug slogan, “Just say no.” She was defending a broader social attitude. She lost.

Similarly in schools, the opponents of pushback theory discovered a remarkable weapon: the Supreme Court. Proponents of standing aside turned decades of school disciplinary tradition into constitutional issues. They won.

In a series of decisions, the justices made the disciplinary authority of principals legally complicated. Fearful of triggering expensive litigation, school authorities pulled back. The environment for learning degraded and remains so to this day in both good and poor public schools.

The No. 1 reason inner-city parents give for trying to get their children into charter or parochial schools is safety, to escape the chaos and danger of the public schools.

In 2007 the Supreme Court recognized what had happened, and ruled in the “Bong Hits 4 Jesus” case (Morse v. Frederick) that principals could tell a student advocating illegal drug use near the school to shut up. In his concurrence, Justice Stephen Breyer wrote, “Students will test the limits of acceptable behavior in myriad ways better known to schoolteachers than to judges.” So we learned.

The phrase used to explain killers Travis Reinking and Nikolas Cruz is that authorities “dropped the ball.” This week, James Shaw picked up the ball inside a Waffle House. It’s time for the people in charge of our institutions to start doing the same thing. "

" Lee H. Hamilton: We're all in this together "

" The writer is a distinguished scholar at the Indiana University School of Global and International Studies and a former Indiana congressman. "

*****************

" Our republic is under stress. So much so, in fact, that if you’re not worried about its future, you probably haven’t been paying attention.

What makes me say this? Our public discourse has become uncivil and shrill. Corruption and unethical actions by prominent politicians headline the daily news. Too many politicians make their mark by fueling division, exploiting frustration and casting doubt on our democratic institutions — and too many Americans respond by agreeing with them.

On the whole, Americans’ regard for our political institutions and the people who run them is scraping rock bottom. By two-to-one margins, parents urge their children not to go into politics.

And who can blame them? These days, it’s far easier to enumerate the things that are wrong with our republic than what is right.

It’s marked by a proliferation of special interests, an avalanche of political money, disregard for facts, gridlock, partisan gerrymandering, excessive partisanship and indifference to the common good among political leaders.

So it’s not surprising that many Americans have tuned out. They understand our republic only vaguely and participate in it less. Voting rates are depressing, and a disturbing number of young Americans reject politics in all its forms.

While political engagement — as measured by people taking to the streets — may be on the rise, that’s not necessarily a sign of good civic health. In fact, we appear to be caught in a dangerous downward cycle.

The risk in all this is that as Americans disengage, we place the entire American democratic enterprise in jeopardy. Lincoln’s burning question at Gettysburg — “Whether a nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure” — was apt then; it is disturbingly so today.

So what do we do? There are plenty of steps we could take to strengthen our democratic institutions and make government more efficient, effective and responsive. But what we need most of all is for our citizens — that’s you and me — to appreciate this democracy we’ve inherited, and to step up to the responsibilities it asks of us.

Our republic, despite its many challenges, is at its core a monumental achievement. It is marked by strong, independent branches of government, entrusted to exercise limited and defined powers within the bounds of the Constitution. It enshrines checks and balances, separation of powers, equal individual rights and opportunity, and the rule of law.

It provides fair, free elections — mostly free from fraud and manipulation. Most remarkably of all, it is constructed to allow us to seek a more perfect union — to improve it as the nation evolves. This is its great strength.

But we can only take advantage of its strength when we act as though we’re all in this republic together — when we work cooperatively to secure a country where all people have the opportunity to enjoy the promise of America by living a life of honor, excellence … and responsibility.

Because democracy places demanding responsibilities on its citizens — to cast an informed vote, to engage in the dialogue of democracy with civility and a willingness to learn, to make discriminating judgments about politics and politicians, to work with others to strengthen the institutions of democracy and improve our part of the world.

We will disagree with one another about all kinds of issues — but also know that we need to accept and tolerate those differences, because we are far stronger when we seek to reconcile them rather than ignore or exacerbate them.

Let’s not deny it: The trends these days are worrisome. We face a bewildering array of dangers to our republic. Authoritarian rule and autocratic leadership, once unthinkable, are now true concerns. We are subject to unwanted foreign influence, prey to public and private figures who use government to pursue money and power and manipulate the rules of the game for personal gain, and at the mercy of politicians who believe that whatever it takes to win is just fine.

But if we also lose trust that we, as citizens, can turn the republic around by shouldering our responsibilities to act, that’s when we are truly sunk. "

Who's going to be the first Democrat to claim Obama laid the groundwork for this to happen ?

nothing has happened yet Edith..its the classic show to have the world drop its guard with N Korea moves nuclear program well out of site. They are done testing so now they can hide production. Anyone who thinks Kim Jung is actually doing this in good faith is very naïve.

You are right to be skeptical   .  However ,  if this is indeed for real , then what are the Peace Agreement Terms ?

1. ) Is Seoul going to be the Capital of a Unified Korea ?

2. ) Is China going to accept Capitalism and Democracy along its border ?

3. ) What about U.S. Troops ?  They simply MUST remain on the Peninsula ( ............ Fifty - Five Thousand Americans DIED for this particular moment in History )  . Is China going to accept American Troops along the Yalu River    ----  fear of the Americans is why they entered the conflict in the FIRST Place and lost one million men from 1950 - 1953   .

4. ) Think of all of the impoverished , destitute and malnourished North Koreans  ( ..... all guaranteed to come fully and completely loaded with Intestinal Parasites ) anxious to pour across the DMZ  .  There are only a few ' choke points  ' and access pathways ...... All of the Land Mines in the DMZ Area that must be removed ( I certainly hope the North Koreans have excellent and reliable  maps . )

Developing .................... Shiver ..................

Maybe we are better off with the status quo  Smiley    --- WAIT !!!!   ... Do they have Oil Reserves over in NK ?!   OMFG !!!!!!     ......      The U.S. can Grab all of the Oil  .  YES !!!!!    .......  Where is my Martini   ?!    .....  " I LOVE YOU ALL !!!!!!   "
