" Richard Goodwin, Crafter Of Johnson's Famous 'We Shall Overcome' Speech, Dies   "

" Speechwriter Richard Goodwin, a driving force in American politics during times of upheaval in the 1960s and the husband of presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, has died at age 86.

Goodwin was a key aide and speechwriter for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, crafting messages about civil rights and equality and challenging America to live up to its ideals.

Goodwin died of cancer, the Associated Press reports, citing a statement from his wife. Doris Kearns Goodwin says her husband died on Sunday at their home in Concord, Mass.

"Dick Goodwin led an extraordinary life," former President Barack Obama said on Monday. "He was a clerk on the Supreme Court, a Congressional aide who helped lay bare a national scandal, a speechwriter to President Kennedy – and that was all before his thirtieth birthday."

Obama added, "Michelle and I will always be grateful for our friendship with Dick and his wife Doris, and we offer our most sincere condolences to her, their children, and their grandchildren."

Goodwin's most famous work is the speech he wrote for Johnson to deliver to Congress on March 15, 1965, after civil rights demonstrators were attacked by law enforcement in Selma, Ala.

Often called the "We Shall Overcome" speech for its repeated use of that phrase, the speech's official title is "The American Promise," according to The American Presidency Project.

"I speak tonight for the dignity of man and the destiny of democracy," Johnson said at the start of his speech.

"This was the first nation in the history of the world to be founded with a purpose. The great phrases of that purpose still sound in every American heart, North and South: 'All men are created equal' — 'government by consent of the governed' — 'give me liberty or give me death.' Well, those are not just clever words, or those are not just empty theories. In their name Americans have fought and died for two centuries, and tonight around the world they stand there as guardians of our liberty, risking their lives."

Racism, Johnson said, is an American problem. And he added that it was up to all of its leaders, and all of its politicians and people, to solve it.

Johnson asked, "For with a country as with a person, 'What is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?' "

In 1966, Goodwin helped to write Sen. Robert F. Kennedy's "Ripple of Hope" speech, delivered in South Africa's University of Cape Town.

"It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped," Kennedy said. "Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."

Decades later, Goodwin worked with Al Gore to write his concession speech for the hotly contested 2000 presidential election.

"While we yet hold and do not yield our opposing beliefs, there is a higher duty than the one we owe to political party," Gore said. "This is America and we put country before party; we will stand together behind our new president."

Goodwin's first brush with the national spotlight came in the 1950s, when he helped the Legislative Oversight Subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives that investigated a scam behind a quiz program called Twenty One. That incident became the genesis for the 1994 movie Quiz Show — which Goodwin produced and which was also criticized at the time for overstating his role in breaking news about the rigged show.

In his political career, Goodwin is also credited with coming up with the phrase Johnson used for a suite of social welfare, equality and conservation programs: "the Great Society."

Some of those lofty plans had the most basic of beginnings. David Gergen — an adviser to Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton — once told NPR about an anecdote Goodwin recalled about that famous tagline.

Gergen said that "when he worked for Lyndon Johnson," Goodwin recalled "Johnson calling him to the swimming pool and instructing him to take his clothes off and get in the pool with Johnson.

"And Johnson came over to him like a great whale, and looked at him and said, 'I need a slogan.'"

Noting the link between big ideas and branding, Gergen added, "And that's how they came up with the Great Society."

https://asia.nikkei.com/Editor-s-Picks/China-up-close/Is-Xi-Jinping-the-scriptwr
iter-of-the-Trump-Kim-summit

" Is Xi Jinping the scriptwriter of the Trump-Kim summit?
US president saw Chinese leader's hand in North Korean about-face   "

" TOKYO -- A Chinese diplomatic source said last week that "Xi Jinping will be the maestro of the U.S.-North Korean summit, even in absentia."

It was a difficult concept to digest. That the Chinese president will be pulling the strings of the historic June 12 summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, sounded like Chinese wishful thinking.

But then on May 17, Trump himself seemed to back that theory hinting that he saw the hand of China behind North Korea's sudden change of tone toward South Korea and the Singapore summit.

"There has been a big difference since they had the second meeting with President Xi. If you remember, a few weeks ago, all of the sudden, out of nowhere, Kim Jong Un went to China to say hello, again, a second time, to President Xi," Trump told reporters, when asked about the prospects of the Kim summit. He was referring to Kim's May 7 and 8 visit to the Chinese city of Dalian.

"I have a feeling ... that, for various reasons, maybe including trade ...it could very well be that he's influencing Kim Jong Un. President of China, President Xi, could be influencing Kim Jong Un," Trump said.

Only days after the summit's date and location were announced, North Korea's Korean Central News Agency released a series of angry statements criticizing the presence of B-52 bombers in the joint military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea, and harsh words for Trump's hawkish National Security Adviser John Bolton.

One release declared North Korea "a nuclear weapons state" and warned "If the U.S. is trying to drive us into a corner to force our unilateral nuclear abandonment, we will no longer be interested in such dialogue and cannot but reconsider our proceeding to the [Singapore] summit."

The aforementioned Chinese diplomatic source said Chinese Premier Li Keqiang's recent visit to Japan was also closely aligned to Xi's diplomatic script. Xi had dispatched his premier to Japan to show the rest of the world that relations between China and Japan are growing warmer.

While in Japan, Li made a show of warmly greeting his hosts and even expressing gratitude to the Japanese media.

He avoided mentioning issues such as the two countries' history and the tensions over the Senkaku Islands, which Japan administers, but China claims and calls the Diaoyu Islands.

"It has been 26 years since I last visited Japan," Li said.

That visit, in 1992, came at a time when Chinese leaders were still paying for their crackdown on the Tiananmen Square protesters.

The communist regime was isolated internationally due to the 1989 incident. Western democracies responded by imposing sanctions, and China quickly found itself in dire economic straits. To end its isolation, China needed to be on friendlier terms with the only Asian member of the Group of Seven rich nations, Japan.  "

http://www.omaha.com/opinion/cho-yoon-je-with-north-korea-this-time-is-different...

"   Cho Yoon Je: With North Korea, this time is different  .   "

" The writer, South Korea’s ambassador to the United States, wrote this for the Washington Post.   "

" When North Korea announced last week that it was postponing high-level inter-Korea talks and might reconsider taking part in the planned summit with President Donald Trump, pundits were quick to say North Korea was up to its old tricks. But my memory went back to a different moment. I recalled my days as a young economist at the International Monetary Fund in the late 1980s when Washington was debating the gloomy prospects of the Cold War. It was impossible to imagine anything like peace could emerge during that dark time. Today, the same pall is hovering over Washington regarding the seemingly dimmed hopes for the denuclearization of North Korea. One Korean expert told me that such skepticism in Washington is based on long-established habit; the world has tried everything, he noted, and Pyongyang has not given up its nuclear weapons no matter what.

It is hard to argue against this viewpoint, given North Korea’s record. And yet I would still contend that this time is different. That is why we must still give hope a chance, even though there are miles to go and the road will be bumpy.

In the 1980s, many in the West initially regarded the Soviet Union’s policies of economic reform and political openness, as well as its stated intention of nuclear arms reduction, with pronounced skepticism. Now we feel that pessimism in respect to North Korea. Yet the grim history of the Cold War did not stop Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and President Ronald Reagan from reaching for a chance at peace.

Reagan, despite intense opposition, chose to steadily move forward to make accommodations through several summit meetings with Gorbachev, concluding in a major arms-control agreement. On June 12, 1987, Reagan said, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” Thirty-one years later to the day, the world is expected to watch the historic summit between Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un, a scene no one could have anticipated without Trump’s audacious decision to move forward.

In 1963, less than a year after the Cuban missile crisis, President John F. Kennedy visited the topic of peace in an inspiring commencement speech at American University. He spoke out against those who criticized him for being naive: “Some say that it is useless to speak of world peace. … Our problems are manmade — therefore, they can be solved by man.” We believe such idealism lives today in the world under American leadership.

We are fully aware of the nature of the North Korean regime. We cannot afford to lose hope, however, that Kim may choose a different path from his father and grandfather. Unlike in the past, we have seen and are about to witness several significant diplomatic actions at the highest level among the main countries involved, including this week’s meeting between Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Washington, and the summit between Trump and Kim in Singapore.

In addition to this political momentum, Kim is implementing meaningful economic changes in North Korea that must be acknowledged. Many economists have stressed the limits of socialist economic systems, exemplified by the failed experiment of the Soviet Union. Kim, however, has implemented a number of reforms to reduce inefficiency in several economic sectors. It is reported that there are more than 450 private markets operating in North Korea. Rather than forcing farmers to be part of cooperatives, the government has assigned each of them 2.5 acres of land to work and cultivate, providing more incentives for productivity growth. Most notably, on April 20, Kim adopted a new strategic policy that made economic growth the nation’s top priority. These dynamics, combined with strong commitments by leaders toward denuclearization, provide unprecedented opportunities. It is vital that we focus on making the best use of these historic opportunities by encouraging Kim to stay on track with his commitments to denuclearization and showing him a vision toward a brighter future for North Korea.

South Korea today is one of the greatest achievements of American diplomatic engagement. More than 36,000 U.S. soldiers died in a land they hardly knew before the Korean War. Today, our economy is more than 350 times larger and trade has increased 1,900 times — due in large part to those Americans who gave their lives in our defense.

Consolidating permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula would be a fitting final chapter of that story of American sacrifice and diplomatic success. It is why we must seize this opportunity, however bright or dim the prospects might seem. As Kennedy said in 1963: “Man’s reason and spirit have often solved the seemingly unsolvable.”

About that Nobel Prize.....N Korea meeting canceled. I think this was easy to see coming and worth the shot perhaps but you need more than a few tweets to have a concise and meaningful foreign policy. Been decades since the USA really had one so not all on Trump.
