" James Comey’s Judgment Days "

" Comey was temperamentally unfit ever to be director of the FBI, and never more so than during Donald Trump’s presidency. "

By Daniel Henninger

" It is beyond imagining that even the politics of the United States could simultaneously put before us two protagonists such as Donald Trump and James Comey —the one a dedicated amoralist who ascends to the presidency, the other an FBI director who quotes Reinhold Niebuhr.

Of Mr. Trump, not enough will ever be said. James Comey, however, stands before us as the most public FBI director since J. Edgar Hoover, also a moralist in his own peculiar way.

Representing the FBI and at times the Justice Department, Mr. Comey spent almost two years answering the siren song of modern media—with press conferences amid a presidential election, appearances before Congress, and now high-profile interviews to market his memoir, “A Higher Loyalty.”

Who is James Comey?

Thanks to the musical version of Victor Hugo’s “Les Miserables,” everyone knows the figure of Inspector Javert, relentless pursuer of Jean Valjean. Less known is Hugo’s own description of Javert, whom he calls “this unspotted police agent.”

Hugo continues: “It was evident to anyone acquainted with that clear, upright, sincere, honest, austere and ferocious conscience, that Javert had just gone through some great interior struggle.”

James Comey’s interior struggle appears on every page of his book. A few hundred words past the first page, Mr. Comey declares, “I have learned that ethical leaders lead by seeing beyond the short term, beyond the urgent, and take every action with a view toward lasting values.”

It is a most unusual man who takes “every action” with a view toward lasting values. But as Mr. Comey makes clear, he is that man. He spends eight pages on the moral justification for his decision to prosecute Martha Stewart while he was U.S. attorney in New York. “There was once a time,” he says, “when most people worried about going to hell if they violated an oath taken in the name of God.”

He explains how as a young 6-foot-8 man, he would tell people who asked that he did indeed play basketball in college, though he had not: “This was a seemingly small and inconsequential lie . . . but it was a lie nonetheless. And it ate at me. So after law school, I wrote to the friends I’d lied to and told them the truth.”

The Catholic tradition places great emphasis on the value of conscience as a guide to behavior. Less well-known is its warning against developing a “scrupulous conscience,” which is an obstinate fascination with one’s own moral standing.

Mr. Comey describes going to the FBI cafeteria while director: He “never cut the line. Even when I wished I could . . . I thought it was very important to show people that I’m not better than anyone else. So I waited.”

One could go on with examples of his high-minded earnestness, but that would require quoting the entire book: his account of prosecuting Scooter Libby or opposing the Bush administration’s post-9/11 surveillance program, Stellar Wind; his pre-emption of Attorney General Loretta Lynch during the Clinton email-server investigation; and, of course, his crucible with Donald Trump.

In an intriguing contrast to his disdainful accounts of Presidents Bush and Trump, he recounts going home after a meeting with President Obama to tell his wife: “I can’t believe someone with such a supple mind actually got elected president.” They have much in common.

In fact, James Comey was temperamentally unfit ever to be director of the FBI, and never more so than in our intense times.

Mr. Comey’s daily visits to his personal chapel of an apolitical “higher loyalty” impaired his professional judgment. Instead, he is judgmental. Judgmentalism is a flaw in an FBI director, because it undermines the objective credibility of his role. A high officer of government shouldn’t see his job as doing battle with the seven deadly sins.

After Donald Trump won the election, an opposition rose on a wave of moral revulsion. The moralistic Mr. Comey let the FBI get swept into a politicized crusade.

Halfway through the book, Mr. Comey describes addressing the FBI’s employees in Washington for the first time. It reveals a lot:

“I gave the talk sitting on a stool, wearing a tie but no jacket. I also wore a blue shirt. This might not seem like a big deal to outsiders, but Bob Mueller [as FBI director] wore a white shirt every day for 12 years. . . . Not some days, or most days—every day. That was the culture, and I thought shirt color was one early, small way to set a different tone. I said nothing about my shirt, but people noticed.”

Perhaps they did, because what happened at the highest levels of the FBI afterward through the Clinton and Trump investigations was a collapse of professional discipline. The FBI needs to find its way back to the culture of the white shirt, every day. "

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/should-kim-get-the-credit-for-the-korean...

" Should Kim get the credit for the Korean detente?  "

By  :  David Ignatius

" President Trump deserves credit for seizing the moment for negotiations with North Korea. But some little-noticed documents reveal that Kim Jong Un has been planning his denuclearization offer and opening to the United States for the past five years.

The diplomatic pace is accelerating now as Trump and the Korean leader prepare for their summit. There’s talk that North Korea may soon release three American prisoners, and Pyongyang has announced plans for a theatrical demolition of a nuclear test site later this month, with American observers watching.

How did this extraordinary Korean detente happen? It’s a complicated story, but it appears that Kim has been the main driver. He has relentlessly pursued a dual strategy: to obtain a usable nuclear weapon, and then pivot toward dialogue and modernization of his economy. He sought his nuclear deterrent with almost reckless determination, but he has been surprisingly nimble in making the turn toward diplomacy.

Would Kim have moved toward negotiations regardless of who was president? We’ll never know. But there’s no denying that Trump’s confrontational approach created an opportunity for crisis diplomacy — and that he was bold enough to embrace Kim’s offer of direct talks.

The North Korean documents were highlighted for me by Robert Carlin, a former CIA and State Department analyst who has visited the North more than 30 times since 1996. He retired from the government in 2004 and has since worked at Stanford University. In our many conversations over the past year, Carlin has been consistently accurate in predicting what Kim would do.

Kim first outlined his dual approach, known as the “ byungjin line,” in a speech at a Korean Workers’ Party meeting in March 2013, two years after taking power. He said that North Korea wanted to strengthen its nuclear weapons capability but also improve its backward and impoverished economy. The United States didn’t pay much attention, because Kim also said he wasn’t prepared to discuss denuclearization. But that soon changed.

Kim’s regime explicitly put denuclearization on the table in a June 16, 2013, statement by the National Defense Commission (NDC). Though the statement had the usual rhetoric, calling the United States a “war arsonist” at one point, it also included this remarkable language: “The denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is the behest of our leader” and “must be carried out . . . without fail.” The statement also urged “high-level talks between the DPRK [North Korea] and the U.S. authorities to . . . establish peace and security in the region.”

Reinforcing the message, a North Korean official privately told American contacts a few weeks later that “underpinning the new policy articulated in the NDC statement was Kim Jong Un’s personal, positive stance toward improving relations with the United States,” according to an unclassified summary of the conversation.

North Korea amplified the denuclearization message in a July 6, 2016, statement by a government spokesman that sought to anchor this policy as part of the dynastic legacy of Kim’s father and grandfather. “The denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is the behest of the Great Leader [Kim Il Song] and the Fatherly General [Kim Jong Il and the steadfast will of our party, army and people,” the statement said.

Despite the talk of denuclearization, Kim’s regime drove defiantly toward the nuclear weapons capability that the statements claimed he was ready to give up. This push culminated in a series of nuclear and missile tests last year, after Trump became president. Despite Trump’s bellicose threats, the North Koreans kept testing.

Late last year, Kim declared, in effect, “mission accomplished.” After a missile launch on Nov. 29, he proclaimed “with pride that now we have finally realized the great historic cause of completing the state nuclear force.”

On New Year’s Day came the pivot. Kim said that although “the nuclear button is on my office desk all the time,” and that his missiles could target all of America, he now wanted to stress “the building of a prosperous country” and a diplomatic outreach to South Korea.

Kim proposed that North Korea attend the PyeongChang Olympics to “ease the acute military tension” and “create a peaceful environment on the Korean Peninsula.” From that proposal flowed the extraordinary chain of meetings, confidence-building measures and public promises about denuclearization — and the pathway to the expected Trump-Kim summit.

Last month, Kim said at a Workers’ Party plenum that the byungjin line had triumphed and that he was shifting to a “new strategic line” devoted to boosting the economy.

Kim is like an illusionist who tells you what trick he’s going to do, and then does it before your eyes, daring you to guess the secret. Trump sees himself as a clever, confrontational deal-maker, but he may have met his match with the kid from Pyongyang. "

Rodney was truly one of the greats. I still miss him. Thanks, Joey. I love getting to see clips like this again.  Cool

That one joke about how he needed 2 girls became he was getting old (so if he fell asleep they could talk to each other) reminds me of an article I read recently:

In 2005, an elderly man hired a sex worker in her twenties, and they went to a love hotel for a quickie. He took Viagra, and they had sex. As the woman was leaving, she joked to the receptionist, “Pops really knocked himself out. He’s still resting up.” After hearing this, the staff went to check on the customer, and sure enough, he was dead.

I know that that's how most men would love to go, but imagine explaining it to the grandkids at the funeral.

The Obama bounce!

https://thetylt.com/politics/unemployment-down-obama-trump

But experts argue it was Obama who successfully righted the American economy after the recession hit. The economic gains we're currently seeing are all directly attributable to former president Obama's efforts.

The current economic expansion just became the third-longest on record. The economy has been adding jobs every month for more than six years, the longest winning streak since World War II. And the federal budget deficit has sharply declined from a high of 9.8 percent of GDP in the middle of the Great Recession to a manageable 3.2 percent last year.
When it comes to job creation, the economy has been adding jobs for 78 months in a row. Saying Trump is responsible for the current economy is completely disingenuous—his main efforts have been to undo Obama's legacy, many of which are directly responsible for the economic gains the U.S. is seeing.

So why would he want to make you think it’s a “mess”? The most likely reason, in my view, is that portraying the current state of the economy as rotten helps the administration justify the wholesale change in policies that it is planning. It also lowers the starting bar so that it’s easier to declare victory later.
As far as black unemployment is concerned, while the number has in fact fallen, it has been doing so steadily for years. And as Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-LA.) points out, the real issue in the black community is underemployment, not just unemployment.

“Black unemployment has been on the decline since 2011, and it’s declined in other years more than in Trump’s one year,” Richmond said. “But what he doesn’t talk about is African-American underemployment. He doesn’t talk about the fact that black unemployment is twice that of white unemployment. He doesn’t talk about wage gaps between the two races, wealth disparities, income disparities…and you will see that it is a very basic and adolescent way to look at African American communities.”

“He’s standing on the back of the success of President Obama and his economy,” Richmond added.

Too bad Obummer can't claim the business-friendly policies instituted under the Trump administration as his own.

Like dismantling the EPA and undoing the bi=partisan banking laws invoked to control another "we're too big to fail disaster"? I agree with some of the trade issues Trump is working on and some of the bounce is his to claim. Doesn't stop him from being the most vile President and least qualified liar to sit in the Oval Office. 3000 confirmed lies and counting....
