This election is over . It is 1980 all over again .

Perhaps you were too young to remember how awful the economy was back in the year 1980  [ Double Digit Inflation , Double Digit Unemployment Rates , Double Digit Interest Rates  , really , Double Digit Everything Bad  ]   .  Now we have got Zero Percent of Everything    [ Zero Percent Growth  , Zero Percent Interest Rates  , Zero Percent Inflation  , Zero Percent Everything   ]  . " The Way Trump Talks
Clinton’s ‘reliable’ political language may lose to the ‘intemperance’ of Trumpian rhetoric.   "

By DANIEL HENNINGER

" Until recently, American politics was as flat as a backyard swimming pool. This year, the politicians gathered for their quadrennial family cookout, known as the presidential primaries. Suddenly, everyone saw some big old blond guy in red trunks bouncing on the diving board. Uh-oh. Then the big guy launched himself, butt first, into the middle of the pool. Everyone, and I mean everyone, got soaked.

Uncle Don, the uninvited guest at the 2016 election, has upended almost everything we knew about presidential campaigns. Not least is the way Donald Trump talks.

“I would build a great wall. And nobody builds walls better than me, believe me. And I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border and I’ll have Mexico pay for that wall.”

“Get ’em out of here. That’s right. Get ’em out of here.”

Nobody in politics talks like that. It violates what we now call “the political discourse.”

For years, politicians have been oh-so careful with their words. In part, this is the language of constituencies and coalition-building, the constant calibrating of support.

But it is also because in our time the media has made politicians pay a price for saying anything that risks harming this or that collection of political sensibilities. When Hillary Clinton said, “I have a lot of experience dealing with men who sometimes get off the reservation,” the press said she had disrespected Native Americans.

It’s ridiculous, but real. No straighter jacket exists in politics today than language. Marco Rubio, an articulate and often forceful speaker, is careful not to push too far beyond the spin zone.

There is also the fact-checking mania. PolitiFact got a Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for its microscopic fact-checks . . . and the politicians went to ground. Scrupulous exactitude in politics may be a good thing, but it’s also dull.

A century or more ago, “intemperate” wasn’t in the political vocabulary. Compared with Teddy Roosevelt, Donald Trump is Little Bo-Peep. The historian William Leuchtenburg writes that Roosevelt once attacked the Colombians as this “pithecoid community” of “Dagos” and “homicidal corruptionists.”

Possibly we are better off without TR’s red-faced eruptions. The problem today is that fear of offending or losing votes has so blanded out the political class that many of these politicians and the American electorate are no longer speaking the same language.

Into this void flopped a couple of rhetorical throwbacks—Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders. Though both lacked eloquence, people everywhere responded to their blunt language, to the point of being oblivious to its content. It was the way they talked that connected with voters. Messrs. Trump and Sanders liberated their audiences from normal politics, because normal politics had become suspect.

Some argued that Mr. Trump merely tapped into latent anger at political correctness. But Bernie embodied PC. Something else in the culture elevated this new political language.

It isn’t exactly truth-telling, because so much of what these two said remained obscure. Liberal critics pointed out that Bernie’s spending was essentially limitless. The Trump wall, like Jack’s beanstalk, kept getting bigger. It didn’t matter. It seemed—or sounded—so real.

Many people today think food isn’t real unless the label tells them it is organic or artisanal. TV commercials announce, “Not actors, real people.” Politics has no immunity from these new interpretations of what’s real. Just the feeling of authenticity for many has become more powerful than understanding the grubby realities of political limits.

Many voters don’t want to hear established politicians talking about the political process, as Mrs. Clinton is doing now, endlessly. What they want is a fighter, a valiant gesture. The Trump and Sanders detractors thought they were hearing a fascist or a socialist wingnut. Their supporters were hearing Sir Galahad, a knight to the rescue.

The political language of a Trump or Sanders also became a kind of shared code of entry. Only individuals able to speak the new language among themselves could “get it.” The discussions of illegal immigration and income inequality go on inside a kind of impenetrable regional dialect, like the way Donald Trump says China—“Chiiii-nuh!”

Hillary Clinton is the antithesis of the current need. Every word she speaks, because it is so carefully planned, rings instantly false. Even the true ones.

Still, the now-evident limitation of this new emotive political language is that none of its speakers or hearers knows what to do next. What comes after the words remains an unchartered frontier.

Bernie Sanders fell short. The current Trump campaign looks like a game of Twister, covering the blank spots. Even the Clinton camp is wrestling with two words—honest and trustworthy.

In the suddenly tightening presidential race, we are seeing, or hearing, the careful and “reliable” political language of Hillary Clinton in competition with the intemperance of Trumpian rhetoric. One sounds real, the other just doesn’t. The new way of talking in American politics may turn out to be enough to win. "

" President Trump Isn’t Farfetched"

" Pundits treat Clinton like a shoo-in, but polls tell a different story. Victory is well within Trump’s reach. "

By DOUGLAS E. SCHOEN

" To listen to conventional wisdom, Hillary Clinton practically cannot lose the presidential election. The various forecasting services, from FiveThirtyEight to CNN to Predictwise, give the Democrat about a 70% chance of winning the White House in November. Few commentators are betting on Donald Trump. Yet the available evidence shows that the race is steadily trending toward Mr. Trump, whose victory remains quite possible.

Consider the polling trends. In a four-way race including Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein, Mrs. Clinton’s lead is now only 2.4 points in the Real Clear Politics average. That’s down significantly from a month ago. In early August, following the Democratic Convention, Mrs. Clinton was up by six points in the YouGov/Economist survey, and eight points in the ABC/Washington Post poll.

When third parties are excluded, Mrs. Clinton does a bit better against Mr. Trump: She leads by 3.3 points in the Real Clear Politics average. Yet that figure has been cut by more than half in a month. In addition, the head-to-head matchup loses relevance each day that public dissatisfaction with the two major-party nominees does not subside. Mr. Johnson, the Libertarian, has held steady for months at about 7% support in the polling average, and the Green Party’s Ms. Stein has stuck at about 3%.

The latest surveys look even more ominous for Mrs. Clinton. Virtually all of those taken in the past week show Mr. Trump ahead, tied, or trailing but within the margin of error. The new CNN/ORC poll, out Tuesday, puts Mr. Trump up by two. Rasmussen’s release last Thursday showed 40% for Mr. Trump and 39% for Mrs. Clinton. The Reuters/Ipsos tracking poll out Friday had the same figures. The L.A. Times/USC tracking survey shows a statistical tie. The latest Investors Business Daily/TIPP survey has Mrs. Clinton up by one, but the margin of error is 3.4 points.

What accounts for this tightening? On the most straightforward level, it seems that Mrs. Clinton is coming down from the bounce she received after the successful Democratic convention. But something else has changed as well. In the latest ABC/Washington Post poll, published at the end of August, her image hit a career low: 56% of Americans viewed her unfavorably and only 41% favorably. This is a significant slide from even early August, when the same poll had Mrs. Clinton at 52% unfavorable and 46% favorable.

The continuing revelations about her private email server and the business dealings of the Clinton Foundation obviously are taking a toll. The FBI’s notes from its interview with Mrs. Clinton, released Friday, reinforce director James Comey’s judgment that she was “extremely careless” with classified information. At least 15,000 more emails could be released before November. As for the Clinton Foundation, at this point it is clear that both Hillary and Bill should resign immediately from its board and any role in daily operations.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump has finally begun to focus. Instead of indulging in public spats with other Republicans or the media, he has given speeches on immigration, the economy and terrorism. His image has begun to improve. Barely a month ago Mr. Trump was 30 points underwater in a Bloomberg poll, with 33% of respondents viewing him favorably and 63% unfavorably. Last week’s release from Reuters/Ipsos showed 44% favorable and 56% unfavorable.

Still, Mr. Trump has failed to capitalize on two central themes: change and corruption. Fifty-six percent of Americans want to “take the country in a different direction,” according to a June poll by YouGov/Huffington Post. And a majority of Americans—56%—think that Mrs. Clinton broke the law by using a private email system, an Associated Press survey found in July. For Mr. Trump, these figures represent a great opportunity.

At the same time, Mrs. Clinton has been struggling to define her own message. Hiding from media scrutiny, she has focused almost exclusively on raising money, hauling in a record $143 million last month for her campaign and the Democratic Party. Her ads targeting Mr. Trump may have done him some damage on the margins. But there is no evidence that they have strengthened her position.

Mrs. Clinton has not offered any defining vision for why she should be elected. She needs an overarching message, beyond simply saying that she is a “change maker,” as her husband called her at the Democratic convention. If articulating a substantive vision proves too challenging, it wouldn’t be the worst fallback strategy to associate herself with the record of President Obama, whose poll numbers are up, or even her husband. But she’s got to do something more than she is currently doing, given her lack of any clear direction for the country and the public sense that she is not trustworthy and arguably corrupt.

So can Donald Trump win? Although he is at a clear disadvantage in the electoral college, evidence suggests that he can. Polls in the past week in Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio show the race tightening. Florida is within the margin of error. North Carolina and even potentially Arizona, states that once seemed out of reach, remain in play.

In the Midwest, Mr. Trump is surging. The Washington Post/Survey Monkey poll published Tuesday shows him leading by four points in Iowa and three points in Ohio. His path to victory runs through these states, especially with Virginia and Colorado now seemingly safe for Mrs. Clinton. The Midwest is where Mr. Trump should devote the bulk of his time and money, focusing on the need for fundamental change, economic revitalization and empowerment for the disadvantaged—making his pitch broadly but not exclusively to white working-class voters.

Neither candidate has so far decisively answered the question of who can best lead America into a challenging future, while helping millions of hardworking people improve their lives. If Mr. Trump makes the better sales pitch over the next 60 days, he may very well find himself sitting in the big chair in the Oval Office. "

" The Trump Blitz Begins   "

" The GOP nominee is finally—relentlessly—arguing that Clinton is unfit for office.  "

By
Kimberley A. Strassel

" Think of it as the moment when  Donald Trump truly learned to throw a (campaign) punch. It came about three weeks ago, amid the latest swirl of stories on the  Clintons’ ethics.  Hillary Clinton had recently blamed her private email server on  Colin Powell. Judicial Watch had released more emails that showed the Clinton Foundation begging the State Department for special favors on behalf of its donors.  Bill Clinton had floated laughable plans to reform the foundation.

The Trump campaign pounced. It began blasting out every new revelation about—or editorial-board comment on—Mrs. Clinton’s shady dealings. It unleashed surrogates, in particular the former prosecutors  Rudy Giuliani and  Chris Christie, to make the legal case against her.  Mr. Trump devoted a significant portion of a speech in Texas to detailing the lies she had told about her server, and the pay-to-play allegations at the foundation. Within a few days the campaign had cut a web ad hitting her for “corruption” and calling the foundation a “slush fund.”

Mrs. Clinton’s slip in the polls is a direct result of the latest flood of scandal. Less noticed is the skillful way that Team Trump is making those hits land. The Republican nominee’s campaign has been doing more right lately, though nothing more so than this. When it comes to the dissection of Mrs. Clinton’s misdeeds, the Trump campaign is firing on 16 cylinders.

If attacking your corrupt opponent on corruption seems obvious, it wasn’t to Mr. Trump for a long time. The GOP nominee is a scrapper, and part of his draw was the expectation that he would speak bluntly about the Clintons. He did, though as voters would soon realize, only in fits and incomplete starts. He delivered a speech on her ethics in June—then never sustained the argument. He ignored prime opportunities (the State Department inspector general report; FBI Director James Comey’s press conference), flitting to other subjects instead. He seemed to think the occasional #CrookedHillary tweet was enough.

This was frustrating if only because Mrs. Clinton’s venality is the concrete with which Mr. Trump must pave his road to the White House. This is a woman whom close to two-thirds of voters view as untrustworthy. She has based her entire campaign around the argument that she is more credible and competent to lead the nation—a claim utterly undermined by revelations about her foundation’s business model, her cavalier handling of classified information, and her inability to “recall” most of her tenure as secretary of state.

Mr. Trump’s new approach is to unrelentingly hit all sides of that claim—making the case that Mrs. Clinton is “unfit” to hold the top job. Case in point: After Wednesday’s commander-in-chief forum on NBC, the Trump campaign detailed precisely why Mrs. Clinton should not be trusted with national security. Mr. Trump hit her during the forum, while a follow-up press release highlighted her bad judgment in using an “illicit” email server and the risk of a “hack of classified info”; noted how her drone emails would “undermine” security; and flagged her stumbling attempt to tell a vet in the audience why she should be held to a different standard on classified information than military officers. Good, smart stuff.

The unrelenting pressure has put Mrs. Clinton in the spotlight and on the defense. That by consequence has somewhat sheltered the Republican nominee from attacks. Listening to Mrs. Clinton—the subject of an FBI investigation, the facilitator of the Crown Prince of Bahrain—on Wednesday drop a line about Mr. Trump’s “scams” and “frauds” was downright amusing. Sort of like watching Al Capone accuse  Eliot Ness of having the occasional light beer.

Also effective has been the campaign’s drumbeat about Mrs. Clinton’s refusal to hold press conferences. (“Hiding Hillary: Day 278!”) Her longtime approach to scandals has been to ignore them and wait for the press to get weary. But the stories keep pouring out this time, and her refusal to address them has made her look shady, arrogant, slippery. She finally succumbed to pressure and took a few cursory questions from reporters Thursday, though none on the email or foundation.

Mr. Trump’s new all-in-on-Hillary approach came about the same time as his staff shakeup. It is likely due in part to the presence of Breitbart’s Stephen Bannon and (more recently) Citizens United’s David Bossie. The press has focused on Breitbart’s fractious role in the conservative world, but Mr. Bannon and Mr. Bossie have both devoted careers to tracking and exposing Mrs. Clinton’s ethical troubles.

Turning voters away from Mrs. Clinton is the groundwork. Mr. Trump still needs to give voters a reason to turn toward him. His sober approach of recent weeks is a start. A challenge will be to translate what has so far been campaign-engineered press releases and speeches into an on-the-fly prosecution of Mrs. Clinton during the presidential debates. Mr. Trump is right that Hillary is unfit to be president. Now, to keep proving it.  "
