" Ruben Navarrette Jr.: Kneeling for no reason now  "

" SAN DIEGO — Nearly a century after its founding, the National Football League finally has its own Hall of Shame. Inductees include:

» Nearly two dozen players with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens who took a knee this week during the national anthem. The players will claim that this was done to draw attention to the fact that many African-Americans have grievances with the United States.

But much of it was about pettiness and politics. A couple days earlier, President Donald Trump had said that anyone who pulled such a stunt should be fired. An estimated 130 other players in the NFL — which is more than 70 percent African-American — took a knee or resorted to other gestures of protest over the weekend. But context is king.

And what the Jaguars and Ravens did was especially egregious because their game was played in London. Let that sink in. American athletes stood on foreign soil and showed contempt for their country, and its anthem, while standing out of respect for “God Save the Queen.”

One more twist: Have any of these rich and pampered malcontents ever picked up a history book? If they had, they might have known that “The Star-Spangled Banner” is based on a poem written by a 35-year-old lawyer named Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombing of Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. And who was the United States at war with in 1812? The British.

» Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, and nearly the entire Steelers team, which cowardly remained in the tunnel during the national anthem. It was Tomlin’s idea; the coach later said he wanted to “protect” his players by sparing them the discomfort of having to choose between respecting their teammates and showing their love of country.

Protect? Is Tomlin running a football team or a day care center? Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said on his personal website that he regretted the incident and wished the team had “approached it differently.”

The one bright spot was Alejandro Villanueva, a former Army Ranger who was awarded a Bronze Star while serving three tours in Afghanistan. The offensive tackle stood alone outside the tunnel, hand over his heart during the anthem. It was an inspiring image that Villanueva — who has been criticized by Tomlin for not sticking with the team and who is obviously under intense pressure to show solidarity with teammates — said in a tweet he now finds embarrassing.

He told reporters that he wanted to stand for the anthem, but he didn’t want to be on display. He doesn’t want to be singled out, and he can’t afford to go rogue because he needs his teammates to watch his back on the gridiron.

Villanueva now says he regrets making Tomlin and fellow players “look bad.” No need for regret, soldier. They did that all on their own.

» And finally, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and the entire Cowboys team, who tried to be too cute by half and wound up creating a spectacle that showed just how ridiculous the whole “take a knee” movement really is.

It’s obvious that Jones just wants peace in the valley so the team can get on with playing football and the billionaire can get back to making money. So the team owner and his players linked arms and kneeled.

But this all happened before the national anthem. They might as well have done it in the parking lot during the tailgating, amid the aroma of brisket. When former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick — who is now a free agent — started this movement last year, at least kneeling used to mean something. I didn’t like it, and I still don’t. But I knew what it meant.

As he made clear in interviews at the time, Kaepernick believed that police were targeting, beating and sometimes even killing young African-American men. And he thought the choices in the 2016 election were lousy and depressing. Now kneeling has become just another thing to do — like “The Macarena.”

The Cowboys are marketed as “America’s Team,” but do they have even the faintest idea what’s going on in America?

Here goes. Too many Americans are stuck on stupid. They are embarrassed by patriotism, take freedom for granted, lack empathy, don’t listen to each other, think themselves superior, ascribe sinister motives, see everything in terms of race and can’t stop poisoning every aspect of society with politics.

I could go on, but some of this may get unpleasant. So, before I continue, Coach Tomlin had better gather up the kiddies and get them back into their safe space.   "

https://www.dallasnews.com/opinion/commentary/2017/09/26/donald-trump-kim-jong-u...

" Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un are eerily similar   "

" A revealing insight into why President Donald Trump's Korea fulminations are painting him and the United States into a corner came in a report of the CIA psychological evaluation of North Korea's equally unpredictable leader.
The CIA described Kim Jong Un as someone who "has a massive ego and reacts sharply and sometimes lethally to insults and perceived slights," reported Brian Bennett of the Los Angeles Times.

This description explains why top presidential advisers have reportedly told Trump to cool his inflammatory rhetoric about Kim. But the CIA's description of Kim also sounds a lot like Trump.

After all, he has shown a proclivity for repeated, self-aggrandizing self-descriptions, which speak to his "massive ego." And much of his life reflects reactions to "perceived slights," whether from the cold shoulder Manhattan's social and financial elite gave to Queens native Trump, or President Barack Obama's sarcastic dismissal of his birther crusade.

The likelihood the two have more in common than would seem usual for the leaders of two such different nations could complicate behind-the-scenes efforts for a peaceful resolution of a situation Obama correctly warned would be Trump's most difficult challenge.

A crucial question is whether, since Kim seems deadly serious in his nuclear ambitions, Trump is equally serious in threatening military action to prevent it.

Unfortunately, by ignoring advisers' warnings against more bluster, Trump has created a situation in which he may be damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.
If Kim persists and Trump fails to follow his tough language with action, he'll look weak. On the other hand, if Trump retaliates, there is no guarantee the destruction would be limited to North Korea.

It's possible Trump has a rational purpose in such very public warnings as his vow in May that future North Korean threats "will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen" and his recent denigration of Kim as "rocket man."

Several analysts have suggested he has adopted the so-called madman theory that President Richard Nixon purportedly used during the Vietnam conflict a generation ago. The theory was that, if the president was seen as a "madman" who would stop at nothing, North Vietnam would be persuaded to accept U.S. peace terms.

Despite waves of U.S. bombing, it didn't work. In the end, Nixon settled for the same agreement he could have had two years earlier, ultimately enabling North Vietnam to complete its takeover of U.S. ally South Vietnam.

Trump's bluster comes in advance of a conflict and threatens far greater destruction. It raises the specter of an attack that would level North Korea but probably also trigger retaliation against South Korea, whose capital lies within artillery range of the border between the two longtime foes.

On the surface, it doesn't seem to be working very well this time, either. Each Trumpian insult seems only to have inspired Kim to escalate his level of defiance, setting off nuclear tests, rockets firing across Japan and, most recently, a threat to explode a nuclear bomb over the Pacific Ocean.

Trump's warnings go back nearly two decades. As far back as a 1999 appearance on NBC's Meet the Press, he said that, if diplomacy didn't work, "better solve the problem now than solve it later." His implied means was obvious.

Last January, on the eve of becoming president, Trump's intent was clear. "North Korea just stated that it is in the final stages of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching parts of the U.S.," he said in a Jan. 2 tweet. "It won't happen!"

That remains Trump's public stance. Last Saturday night, he derided North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho's U.N. speech, warning "If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won't be around much longer."

Ri replied Monday that, because the United States "declared war on our country," North Korea might shoot down U.S. planes over international waters. "The question of who won't be around much longer will be answered then," he told reporters.

As other officials have stressed, the preferred U.S. route to resolve this remains international economic sanctions. But those applied so far have had little evident deterrent effect, raising the prospect that one of the two impetuous leaders will goad the other into disastrous action.

Since the dawn of the nuclear age, the world has relied on U.S. restraint to prevent a global cataclysm. It's how President Harry Truman resisted the Soviet Union's 1948 Berlin blockade and how President John F. Kennedy responded to the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.

The current situation requires a similar response, especially from a president who may have "a massive ego and reacts sharply and sometimes lethally to insults and perceived slights."

Kiss leads Pledge of Allegiance at Gretna (Louisiana) Fest

Posted on October 1, 2017

By Doug MacCash
NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune

The spectacular blizzard of confetti that fluttered down during "(I Wanna) Rock and Roll All Nite" had barely settled Saturday (Sept. 30) at the Gretna Heritage Festival when the Kiss concert took an unexpected turn toward the patriotic.

"It's always cool to love your country," frontman Paul Stanley told the mostly appreciative audience. Joined by Gretna politicians, the singer-guitarist congratulated Army Major Steve Roberts for his 30-plus years of military service.

"Some people believe that freedom is free," he said. But Kiss, Stanley said, appreciates military sacrifice.

In an odd visual juxtaposition of symbols, Stanley, dressed in a glittering black, midriff-exposing costume that evokes rock 'n' roll abandon, led the crowd in a respectful recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

See it here, complete with military honor guard:
https://www.facebook.com/kconley504/videos/10213423736881766/

Not everyone approved. One social media commenter said the show wouldn't go on without the Pledge, and that the action defied the spirit of rock.

"KISS made everyone do the pledge of allegiance before they would do an encore," Bantam Foxes wrote. "That was the least rock and roll thing I've ever seen."

The crowd that witnessed Kiss's patriotic flourish was enormous. Thousands of fans flooded the riverside meadow in front of the Gretna Fest main stage. Thousands more clustered on the sloping levee. A big video screen showed the concert to scores of folks seated beyond the levee near the old courthouse.

Kiss disappointed no one. The two original members of the quartet, Stanley and basist Gene Simmons, are well into their 60s. There's certainly some gray lurking beneath their shocks of raven black hair, but both men played and postured with energy, passion and humor all the way from "Deuce" to "Detroit Rock City." Kiss may have been performing for 45 years, but the musicians were the opposite of blase about it.

Kiss was the absolute perfect act for the Gretna Fest scene. Gretna Fest is a very big small-town carnival, with kettle corn, prize goldfish in little plastic bags, a Ferris wheel, lots of beer and lots of red, white, and blue. Kiss's unpretentious good time vibe fit like a foot in a well broken-in six-inch chrome platform boot.

Unpretentiousness can be the key to America's heart. Stanley proudly announced that the band had been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But, he said, the truth was that the folks at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame actually hate Kiss. It was fan popularity alone that put them in the Cleveland museum, Stanley asserted victoriously.

On Saturday, Kiss left no rock 'n' roll stagecraft stone unturned. In the course of the 90-minute show the crowd witnessed the eruption of many, many fire pots, Roman candles and confetti cannons. Stanley playfully spit picks into the front row. Simmons allowed "blood" to spill grotesquely from his mouth. Stanley acrobatically held the guitar behind him and strummed between his legs. Simmons winkingly wagged his tongue ... and wagged his tongue ... and wagged his tongue. It was all lovably lurid.

Simmons' tongue is an icon. All of Kiss is iconic. Admittedly that's an overused term, but in this band's case, it applies. Kiss is more than a band; it's a Gothic, nihilistic, libertine, unpredictably patriotic Americana touchstone. The band might not be as recognizable as Santa Claus, but it would give Ronald MacDonald a run for his money.

Jennifer Larino contributed to this review.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/a-north-korean-ship-was-s...

" A North Korean ship was seized off Egypt with a huge cache of weapons destined for a surprising buyer   "

By Joby Warrick

" Last August, a secret message was passed from Washington to Cairo warning about a mysterious vessel steaming toward the Suez Canal. The bulk freighter named Jie Shun was flying Cambodian colors but had sailed from North Korea, the warning said, with a North Korean crew and an unknown cargo shrouded by heavy tarps.

Armed with this tip, customs agents were waiting when the ship entered Egyptian waters. They swarmed the vessel and discovered, concealed under bins of iron ore, a cache of more than 30,000 rocket-propelled grenades. It was, as a United Nations report later concluded, the “largest seizure of ammunition in the history of sanctions against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.”

But who were the rockets for? The Jie Shun’s final secret would take months to resolve and would yield perhaps the biggest surprise of all: The buyers were the Egyptians themselves.

A U.N. investigation uncovered a complex arrangement in which Egyptian business executives ordered millions of dollars worth of North Korean rockets for the country’s military while also taking pains to keep the transaction hidden, according to U.S. officials and Western diplomats familiar with the findings. The incident, many details of which were never publicly revealed, prompted the latest in a series of intense, if private, U.S. complaints over Egyptian efforts to obtain banned military hardware from Pyongyang, the officials said.

It also shed light on a little-understood global arms trade that has become an increasingly vital financial lifeline for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the wake of unprecedented economic sanctions.

A statement from the Egyptian Embassy in Washington pointed to Egypt’s “transparency” and cooperation with U.N. officials in finding and destroying the contraband.

“Egypt will continue to abide by all Security Council resolutions and will always be in conformity with these resolutions as they restrain military purchases from North Korea,” the statement said.

But U.S. officials confirmed that delivery of the rockets was foiled only when U.S. intelligence agencies spotted the vessel and alerted Egyptian authorities through diplomatic channels — essentially forcing them to take action — said current and former U.S. officials and diplomats briefed on the events. The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss U.S. and U.N. findings, said the Jie Shun episode was one of a series of clandestine deals that led the Trump administration to freeze or delay nearly $300 million in military aid to Egypt over the summer.

Whether North Korea was ever paid for the estimated $23 million rocket shipment is unclear. But the episode illustrates one of the key challenges faced by world leaders in seeking to change North Korea’s behavior through economic pressure. Even as the United States and its allies pile on the sanctions, Kim continues to quietly reap profits from selling cheap conventional weapons and military hardware to a list of customers and beneficiaries that has at times included Iran, Burma, Cuba, Syria, Eritrea and at least two terrorist groups, as well as key U.S. allies such as Egypt, analysts said.  "
