Clinton-Trump debate could collide with Rolling Stones on streets of Las Vegas

By ART MARROQUIN
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

We already know the first two presidential debates will clash with the NFL’s scheduled games on Sunday and Monday night in getting the attention of television viewers.

During the final debate set for Oct. 19 in Las Vegas, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump will collide with yet another iconic institution: The Rolling Stones.

The candidates will be center stage at the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus, less than three miles from where The Rolling Stones will be rocking T-Mobile Arena before a likely sell-out crowd of 20,000 concert-goers.

With less than two months to go, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada this week started strategizing for what could potentially turn into a traffic nightmare along Tropicana Avenue, Interstate 15 and surrounding streets.

It’s too soon to determine whether any street closures or detours will be needed, but motorists headed home from work that Wednesday night should consider alternate routes to avoid the area.

On a typical day, roughly 95,000 vehicles drive along Tropicana Avenue near the UNLV campus and McCarran International Airport. That number is expected to jump to 105,000 vehicles, based on figures from heavily attended basketball games and the National Finals Rodeo previously held at the Thomas & Mack Center, Castro said.

“We don’t anticipate it to be any different than handling the large conventions that come to town or popular holiday weekends,” RTC spokeswoman Angela Castro said.

The presidential debate and the Stones will overlap with a few conventions that day, including Sweet Adelines International with 15,000 attendees at the MGM Grand hotel and casino across the street from T-Mobile Arena, said Jeremy Handel, a spokesman for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

“With all the special events and major conventions we host all the time, we work through these things often, and we all work together as a destination very well,” Handel said.

The RTC will post traffic warnings on electronic message boards across the city about three days before the Stones’ concert and presidential debate. Potential road restrictions and suggested alternate routes will also be provided to driver-navigation apps.

On the day of the big events, workers in the RTC’s traffic management center will keep a close eye on the road with help from cameras mounted on traffic signals.

The live footage is beamed to large television screens, allowing workers to determine whether an extra-long green light should be allowed for the most log-jammed intersections around T-Mobile Arena, UNLV or any other problem areas.

Some traffic relief may come when nearly half of UNLV’s classrooms shut down early on Oct. 19 in anticipation of the debate.

“Planning is still ongoing, and we expect to have more clarity on details as we get closer to the debate,” UNLV spokesman Tony Allen said. “Las Vegas is known for its ability to successfully host large-scale events, and we are working hard with our partners to deliver an exceptional experience.”

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/michael-rosenblum/donald-trump-is-going-to_b_11637...

" Donald Trump Is Going To Be Elected "

" Donald Trump is going to be elected president.

The American people voted for him a long time ago.

They voted for him when The History Channel went from showing documentaries about the Second World War to “Pawn Stars” and “Swamp People.”

They voted for him when The Discovery Channel went from showing “Lost Treasures of the Yangtze Valley” to “Naked and Afraid.”

They voted for him when The Learning Channel moved from something you could learn from to “My 600-lb Life.”

They voted for him when CBS went from airing “Harvest of Shame” to airing “Big Brother.”

These networks didn’t make these programming changes by accident. They were responding to what the American people actually wanted. And what they wanted was “Naked and Afraid” and “Duck Dynasty.”

The polls may show that Donald Trump is losing to Hillary Clinton, but don’t you believe those polls. When the AC Nielsen Company selects a new Nielsen family, they disregard the new family’s results for the first three months. The reason: when they feel they are being monitored, people lie about what they are watching. In the first three months, knowing they are being watched, they will tune into PBS. But over time they get tired of pretending. Then it is back to the Kardashians.

The same goes for people who are being asked by pollsters for whom they are voting. They will not say Donald Trump. It is too embarrassing. But the truth is, they like Trump. He is just like their favorite shows on TV.

Mindless entertainment.

Trump’s replacement of Paul Manafort with Breitbart’s Steve Bannon shows that Trump understands how Americans actually think. They think TV. They think ratings. They think entertainment.

We are a TV-based culture. We have been for some time now. The average American spends 5 hours a day, every day, watching TV. After sleep, it is our number one activity.

More shockingly, we spend 8.5 hours a day staring at screens — phones, tablets, computers. And more and more of the content on those devices is also video and TV.

If you spend 5-8 hours a day, every day, for years and years doing the same thing it has an impact on you. For the past 40 years, we have devoted 5-8 hours a day staring at a screen — every day. And we haven’t been watching Judy Woodruff. We have been watching reality TV shows. That is what we love. That is what we resonate to. “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.”

The French may love food. The Italians may love opera. What we love is TV. We are TV culture. It defines who we are.

In the 1950s, early television was allowed, with many restrictions, to be an observational guest at political conventions. They were quiet “flies on the wall,” carefully and quietly commentating on what they saw way down below. They did not get involved in the process. Today, they ARE the process. Today, political conventions are nothing but carefully directed TV shows. Likewise “debates.” They exist only to entertain a TV audience. TV and entertainment now dictate everything political. It is a never-ending show. The biggest reality show on air.

And Donald Trump is great TV.

He knows how to entertain.

He understands ratings.

Hillary Clinton is crap TV.

She may be smarter, better prepared, a better politician. It won’t matter. She is terrible entertainment.

That’s just how it is. Depressing, but true.

He is Kim Kardashian. She is Judy Woodruff.

Who gets better ratings?

Who would you rather watch for the next four years?

Honestly...

In 1825, the great French gastronom Brillat de Savarind said, “Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are.” Today, in America, we can safely say, “Tell me what you watch, and I will tell you what you are.”

And what do we watch?

It isn’t “PBS NewsHour.”

TRANSLATION:
The King

I know well
That I'm out

But on the day, that I die
I know you have to mourn

(cry and cry, cry and cry)

You may say that you never loved me
But you'll be very sad
At that is how it's going to be

With money or without money
I always do what I want

And my word is the law
I do not have a throne or a queen

no one that understands me
But I'm still the king

A stone in the path
showed me that my destiny
was to roll

rolling and rolling
(Roll and roll, Roll and roll)

Afterwards, an arriero told me, you don't have to arrive first, you just need to know when to arrive.

http://www.naplesnews.com/story/opinion/2016/09/02/jay-ambrose-things-worry/8971...

" Jay Ambrose: Some things to worry about "

" Time magazine has signed up with the hunky-dory crowd. It says in an article that “politically motivated hyperbole” has led to a sense that “America is in a state of irreversible decline” and then gives us “five facts” showing us things aren’t so bad.

Many, many things aren’t — there are those of us who still believe ours is an incredibly great nation — but some are, such as the way some magazine articles are written these days. The facts presented aren’t facts at all. They are arguable interpretations of selected facts and sometimes make no sense at all, as in saying don’t fret too much about a significant violent crime rise because things were worse 25 years ago.

Our country happens to be faced with a number of potentially ruinous issues — I am going to briefly list five — but saying that is different from saying decline is irreversible. I don’t do that any more than any politician I’ve ever heard. They all claim they can fix things, and maybe not, but for Time to insinuate — along with some balance — that nothing all that grievous is at hand is a mistake. It can lessen the urge to find answers, and we must search. We must search.

And here is a place to start — the dissolution of family.

This country has seen an extraordinary rise of single-parent homes. It’s usually just the mother running things, it’s usually in poor homes and it frequently leads to disaster for the child — crime, dropping out of school, staying poor. Family is society’s central institution and its collapse portends other kinds of collapse.

A second issue: While virtually every other large group of people in both the developed and undeveloped world has been living longer than ever before, one group in this country is not. That’s uneducated middle-aged whites.

Here is what’s killing them: drugs, alcohol and suicide. Many are clearly in a state of depression, and what put them there, many say, are fewer good job opportunities owing in part to an economy that more and more demands skills they do not have. A drug epidemic would seem to be both cause and effect, and a decline in religion, I would argue, just may have left a spiritual void.

Third: The evaporation of trust.

Only 19 percent of Americans trust their government, says the Pew Research Center. That figure is down from close to 80 percent in 1958. We also don’t trust other institutions, professionals, businesses or even each other very much. Societies run on trust, and when you don’t have it, it’s every man for himself.

Fourth is what I see as a weakening of our constitutional democracy owing to a cascade of regulations — in effect laws — written by unelected bureaucrats, a Supreme Court that regularly overreaches constitutional intent, an executive branch that disregards rule of law and an ever lessening regard for limits.

The fifth concern falls in the last-but-not-least category. It is a presidential election featuring one candidate who is an ignorant, vulgar, narcissistic clown and another whose policy ideas could slam us hard and whose character is crumbly. What will follow from whichever candidate wins? How did we get here? How do we fix what got us here?

This list could obviously be extended — to the racial tensions of the moment, to the hooey in some of our universities, to even an economy that leaves Time magazine in a mostly good mood. The point is not to say that all is lost or to be ungrateful about how much remains right in the land. The point is to embrace our ideals and all they have done and to use that glorious spirit to set right what has gone astray, even if it requires a long-term effort.

The thing is, we can do it. That’s not a fact, but it is a strongly held opinion. "
