http://www.omaha.com/opinion/fred-hiatt-what-are-china-s-leaders-so-afraid-of/ar...

" Fred Hiatt: What are China’s leaders so afraid of?  '

Washington Post

"  As you read about Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo, who died Thursday in Chinese captivity, ask yourself this: Why are his jailers — President Xi Jinping and the rest of China’s Communist regime — so afraid?

I wonder about that question sometimes when I think of another of their captives, someone you are less likely to have heard of, a man named Wang Bingzhang.

Wang is, at this point, one of China’s longest-serving political prisoners. He is 69 years old and in poor health. He has been locked up since 2002, when Chinese agents kidnapped him from Vietnam, hauled him across the border, kept him incommunicado for six months and then sentenced him, in a one-day, closed-door “trial” held without notice to family or friends, to life in prison.

Wang’s crime? Like Liu, he had campaigned, peacefully, for democracy in China. He had argued that freedom is not a “Western” value but a desire and a right of all human beings.

For that, he, like Liu, had to be locked away and prevented from communicating with the world. As with Liu, whose wife, Liu Xia, has been subjected to a tormenting, bullying, isolating house arrest though she has never been charged with any crime, Wang’s family must be made to suffer. His daughter Ti-Anna Wang, who is Canadian and a friend of mine, has not been permitted to visit her father since she published an op-ed in the Post urging his release 8½ years ago.

Why are they so afraid?

Why would they keep Liu Xiaobo in his cell until his cancer was so advanced that he was near death — and then keep him from traveling abroad, where he might yet have gotten care? Why would they keep Wang from spending his last years with his children and grandchildren?

What fear could motivate such cruelty?

The answer, I believe, has something to do with the story China’s rulers tell their people, and maybe themselves, to cling to power.

The story, it’s important to note, is partly true: The regime has, in the past quarter-century, presided over steady economic growth that has brought hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and into the middle class. On its scale, it is a unique achievement in human history.

But their story is also, in many respects, false. Far from being selfless patriots, the ruling elite has grown fat off the state. They do not want Chinese people reading about their overseas bank accounts or their children attending elite foreign prep schools and universities.

Far from being an alien Western import, democracy has proved to be a universal aspiration that has been embraced successfully in Japan, Indonesia, South Korea and — most dangerously for Beijing — Taiwan.

Far from delivering continuous progress for an ever-happier nation, the regime since 1949 has intermittently plunged China into disastrous famines and spasms of internecine violence that have cost tens of millions of lives.

Today it must employ tens of thousands of censors and lock away hundreds of lawyers, journalists and religious believers to maintain the facade of universal acclaim.

Perhaps most perilously, the Communist Party rules over a population that no longer believes in communism. The regime’s only remaining justification is that it delivers economic growth. Yet, as the economy becomes more complex, growth becomes more and more dependent on people being free to think, read, challenge and compete. The regime is caught in this paradox — and afraid.

“Any government that jails its own people for political dissent still has a long way to go to become a respected member of the international community,” Ti-Anna Wang wrote in that 2009 op-ed.

On some level, the regime must understand that. If it enjoyed international respect, it would not have to browbeat and bully other governments not to meet with the Dalai Lama and other peaceful critics.

And China’s leaders must understand that the same logic applies at home: If they enjoyed the respect of their own people, they would not have to shut down every blogger, newspaper and website that expressed an opinion contrary to the party line.

They would not have to keep Liu Xiaobo from traveling to Norway to pick up his Nobel Prize. They would not have to lock up 69-year-old Wang Bingzhang to keep him from extolling the virtues of democracy.

On some level, Xi and his colleagues must know that they are wrong and that Liu and Wang are right. Clearly they fear that their people will come to that realization. Maybe they are also afraid to admit it to themselves.  "

Actually  , ever since Carson retired and Letterman started sagging all the best television is now on early in the morning whilst people are busy making coffee  , crapping up , sausages flying around everywhere  , shaving their face in the mirror whilst their   ' Hog is Hanging Out ! '  , morning toilet  , etc .    Unfortunately those ratings over there at Morning Joe continue to disappoint due to Joe Scarborough's refusal to dump Mika for Nicole Wallace .  Prayer services are beginning to pop up across the country for the MSNBC Executives ( Suits ) to see the light and force the change  :

Did ‘passing gas’ cause illness on Raleigh flight? Airline says no.
By Mark Price
[email protected]

A story reported around the world of a man’s powerful flatulence prompting the evacuation of a Charlotte flight to Raleigh is apparently full of hot air.
Media outlets from the United Kingdom to India were reporting Sunday that an American Airlines flight had to be evacuated in Raleigh after other passengers became sick from smelling an ailing man’s gas.
Not true, say American Airline officials.
“The plane was not evacuated. (A) medical call came in for someone affected by an odor after the plane deplaned normally,” a Raleigh airport official said in an email to the Charlotte Observer.
An American Airlines official added: “We did take an aircraft out of service for a mechanical issue, an odor in the cabin...No ‘passed gas’ issue.”

" For the Love of Charlie Gard "

" When it comes to the life of a child, should parental devotion be disqualifying?  "

By William McGurn

" So Charlie Gard’s fate now comes down to this: whether an American doctor can persuade a British judge that little Charlie’s life is worth living.

The child cannot see, cannot hear, and suffers from a genetic disorder for which there is no cure—yet he has exposed the great fault line between the post-Christian West and its past. For most of history, men and women have regarded suffering as part of life. But as medicine tames once-deadly afflictions and the idea of some larger meaning to the cosmos wanes, suffering comes to appear less a part of the natural order than an intolerable anomaly.

Follow this logic to the end and you will arrive at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. The hospital dates to 1852, when it was founded by a doctor hoping to relieve “the shockingly high level of infant mortality.” How curious that this same hospital now argues for infant mortality, or at least for the mortality of one particular infant.

Hospital experts say it’s in Charlie’s “best interests” that he be denied the experimental treatments because he “has no quality of life.” Better for him to die, they say, than risk suffering. Never mind the judge’s original admission that “no one can be certain whether or not Charlie feels pain.”

Let us stipulate a distinction between removing someone from life support, as the hospital proposes, and taking active measures to induce death. Put another way, if Connie Yates and Chris Gard —Charlie’s parents—decided to remove their son from his ventilator and allow nature to take its course, it would be a difficult but eminently defensible position.

But the claim asserted by the representatives of Britain’s state-run health care system is more sweeping and insidious: This is our call, they say. Such is the Great Ormond Street Hospital’s sense of dominion, says Ms. Yates, that it refused to allow Charlie to come home to die, wrapped in the loving arms of his mom and dad.

In the Book of Exodus the Israelites are warned that theirs is a “jealous God,” but there is no god more jealous than single-payer health care. For at the heart of single payer is single authority. Isn’t it striking how resentful the legal and health care authorities are that Charlie’s family has raised $1.7 million, thus taking money off the table as an excuse to deny him the offered treatments?

Against the emotional outbursts of the parents, the official pronouncements all aim to convey a sense of reasonableness, with soothing references to the law, the selflessness and expertise of those pushing to overrule Charlie’s parents, and, of course, the complexity of the situation.

Still, the deck has been stacked from the beginning. The giveaway is the appointment of a guardian to represent Charlie’s interests, even as the court rulings concede it would be difficult to find a more devoted mother and father. Now we learn the lawyer who represents Charlie in court runs a charity with connections—surprise!—to a sister organization that promotes assisted suicide and until 2006 called itself the Voluntary Euthanasia Society.

The Great Ormond Street Hospital even wants the last word on love: “In one respect, Charlie is immensely fortunate” to have such loving parents. Because in this context “in one respect” really means, “not in the sense that has to do with decisions about their son’s life.” In other words, the parents’ love disqualifies them. In choosing a guardian to represent Charlie against his parents, the courts sided with the doctor who characterized Charlie’s mom and dad as a “spanner in the works.”

It wasn’t long ago that people worried about the cheapening of human life were predicting practices such as legal abortion would lead to the acceptance of things once thought unthinkable. Euthanasia, for example, or the weeding out of children deemed not perfect enough. These people were dismissed as Cassandras. They now look like prophets.

Charlie Gard’s story comes after a case in the Netherlands where an elderly women suffering from dementia woke up and resisted as she was about to be euthanized—only to have the doctor order her family to hold her down for the fatal injection. Meanwhile, how many moms and dads of children with Down syndrome have had complete strangers come up to ask, “Didn’t you have a test?” Translation: Surely you wouldn’t have had this child had you known.

The essence of civilization is that the strong protect the weak. But Charlie Gard shows that the barbarian no longer comes wielding a club and grunting in some undecipherable tongue. These days the barbarian comes as an expert, possessed of all the requisite certification—and an unquestioned faith in his absolute right to impose final judgments about the “quality of life” of other people’s loved ones.  "
