" The Vertigo Presidency   "

" A belly-flop into the cloudy pond of Mr. Trump’s psyche won’t Make America Great.  "

By BRET STEPHENS

“Be not hasty to believe flying Reports to the Disparagement of any.”

“Be not apt to relate News if you know not the truth thereof.”

These two statements are, respectively, the 50th and 79th Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation, compiled by Jesuits toward the end of the 16th century. George Washington copied them out by hand as a teenager, and they served as touchstones for his personal and public conduct for the remainder of his life.

Care to name a political figure who might be well-served by observing such rules today?

We are now in the seventh week of Donald Trump’s presidency, and if fair-minded detractors and fans of his administration can agree on anything, it’s that this is not going well. Mr. Trump isn’t simply failing on terms set by his opponents, which is a given for most presidents. He is failing on his supporters’ terms, too. Making America Great Again was not supposed to be a belly-flop into the cloudy pond of Mr. Trump’s psyche.

Last weekend brought the latest self-inflicted wound via Mr. Trump’s early-morning tweet that Barack Obama “had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower” just before the election. For good measure, the president added that his predecessor’s behavior was reminiscent of Joe McCarthy and Richard Nixon.
It turns out that the origin of this claim was an election-eve report from Louise Mensch of Heat Street that the FBI had obtained a secret warrant to investigate the Trump Organization’s suspected links to two Russian banks. Yet Ms. Mensch and other journalists never reported that there had been an actual wiretap. Mr. Obama has flatly denied ordering any such wiretap, and FBI Director Jim Comey has asked the Justice Department publicly to reject the president’s allegations.

Maybe Mr. Comey and Mr. Obama are lying. Maybe Ms. Mensch doesn’t understand what she herself reported. Maybe the source of Mr. Trump’s information isn’t merely another neuralgic radio monologue from Mark Levin or a recap in Breitbart News, but his own reliable presidential intelligence.

Or, maybe, an intemperate and verbally incontinent 70-year-old man, prone to believing dubious conspiracy theories, just let fly on Twitter at 6:35 a.m., to hell with the consequences. And now the entire machinery of government must once again get in gear to contain the political fallout.

If such episodes occurred once or twice in a presidential term, they might not matter much. But the president’s supporters ought at least to ask themselves how much of his political capital has now been squandered on spiteful fusillades intended to settle pointless scores. How goes that “major investigation” into alleged voter fraud that Mr. Trump promised only a few weeks ago? How many wavering supporters did the president win over last month by accusing half the press corps of being “an enemy of the American people”?

Repeat these convulsions at the current rate of two or three a month, and the result could be a Seinfeld presidency—a show about nothing, only this time devoid of wit and sweetness.

Except for this: No presidency is ever about nothing. And the something that the Trump administration is fast becoming about is its own paranoia, incompetence and recklessness, all playing out in vertigo-inducing ways. The president of the United States has now publicly denounced his predecessor as a “bad (or sick) guy!” Mr. Obama will shrug it off, but what happens when someone just as prickly as Mr. Trump—Xi Jinping for instance, or Kim Jong Un—takes the next asinine tweet seriously?

That’s a scary thought, but the scarier one is Mr. Trump’s methodical corruption of the presidency—or, more accurately, the concept of the presidency. In his new biography of Washington, John Rhodehamel eloquently describes the founding father’s “deliberate creation of the public character that gave him the moral authority to lead the quarrelsome collection of former colonies into sturdy nationhood.”

That moral authority is now being dissipated at a rate unparalleled in recent history, except perhaps during the Watergate scandal. The difference is that we haven’t just lost the Vietnam War, the economy hasn’t hit a wall, and we’re still in the honeymoon phase of this presidency.

Republicans and conservative pundits keep pretending that Mr. Trump’s eruptions are a sideshow, and that they will still be able to get on with repealing ObamaCare, cutting taxes, and so on. Let’s hope so. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned about this president, it’s that he didn’t come to the White House to be the instrument of Paul Ryan’s agenda. If there’s another thing we’ve learned, it’s that Mr. Trump hasn’t the slightest intention of changing his ways, even if he had the ability to do so.

Character rules, for better or worse. Americans used to know this, thanks to the likes of Washington. But liberals dropped the idea with Bill Clinton and conservatives dropped it with this guy. An earlier generation of moralists, philosophers and commonsensical people would have known what to call this: decline  "

" McCarthyism at Middlebury "

" The silencing of Charles Murray is a major event in the annals of free speech. "

By DANIEL HENNINGER

" The violence committed against Charles Murray and others at Middlebury College is a significant event in the annals of free speech.

Since the day the Founding Fathers planted the three words, “freedom of speech,” in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, Americans and their institutions have had to contend with attempts to suppress speech.

The right to speak freely has survived not merely because of many eloquent Supreme Court decisions but also because America’s political and institutional leadership, whatever else their differences, has stood together to defend this right.

But maybe not any longer.

America’s campuses have been in the grip of a creeping McCarthyism for years. McCarthyism, the word, stands for the extreme repression of ideas and for silencing speech.

In the 1950s, Republican Sen. Joe McCarthy turned his name into a word of generalized disrepute by using the threat of communism, which was real, to ruin innocent individuals’ careers and reputations.

Today, polite liberals—in politics, academia and the media arts—watch in silent assent as McCarythyist radicals hound, repress and attack conservatives like Charles Murray for what they think, write and say.

One of the first politicians to speak against this mood in 1950 was Republican Sen. Margaret Chase Smith of Maine. In her speech, “Declaration of Conscience,” Sen. Smith said: “The American people are sick and tired of being afraid to speak their minds lest they be politically smeared as ‘Communists’ or ‘Fascists’ by their opponents. Freedom of speech is not what it used to be in America. It has been so abused by some that it is not exercised by others.”

Three years later, in 1953, President Dwight Eisenhower gave a famous commencement speech at Dartmouth College. “Don’t join the book burners,” Ike told the students. Even if others “think ideas that are contrary to ours, their right to say them, their right to record them, and their right to have them at places where they are accessible to others is unquestioned, or it isn’t America.”

Today, the smear is common for conservative speakers and thinkers. Prior to Mr. Murray’s scheduled talk at Middlebury, a student petition, signed by hundreds of faculty and alumni, sought to rescind the invitation because “we believe that Murray’s ideas have no place in rigorous scholarly conversation.” Such “disinvitations” have become routine.

So let us plainly ask: Why hasn’t one Democrat stood in the well of the Senate or House to denounce, or even criticize, what the Middlebury mob did to Charles Murray and the faculty who asked him to speak? Have any of them ever come out against the silencing of speech they don’t like?

Let’s recognize that the failure to oppose McCarthyist creep from the left is also consuming liberal reputations. A key event here is what happened at Yale to Professors Erika and Nicholas Christakis, who were made to resign their positions last May over the infamous 2015 “Halloween” costumes incident.

Erika Christakis wrote later about the experience for the Washington Post and there is one unforgettable passage: “Few [of her colleagues] spoke up. And who can blame them? Numerous professors, including those at Yale’s top-rated law school, contacted us personally to say that it was too risky to speak their minds. Others who generously supported us publicly were admonished by colleagues for vouching for our characters.” That is McCarthyism at Yale.

Years back, well-intentioned people supported the creation of speech codes in academic settings. That was a poisoned chalice. Acquiescing to claims for ever-expanding definitions of “hurtful speech” led, inevitably, to rule by mob, like the one at Middlebury that sent Prof. Allison Stanger to the hospital. Some faculty of late have been setting aside the tedium of open discourse to join the thrilling student mobs.

For all this, Middlebury may be a turning point in this slow, steady and too often unresisted effort to replace the Founders’ First Amendment with a progressive rewrite.

A few days after the Murray incident, something extraordinary happened: Some 40 Middlebury professors, from many disciplines, signed a strong statement supporting “Free Inquiry on Campus.” It was published Tuesday on this newspaper’s op-ed page. By late Wednesday the number had grown to more than 80 signers.

The Middlebury Statement by these professors, some without tenure, is an important event.

Their statement doesn’t merely defend free speech and inquiry. It explicitly rejects arguments by the left justifying speech suppression, such as their notion that certain ideas are themselves a form of “violence.” The Middlebury dissenters assert: “Exposure to controversial points of view does not constitute violence.”

Readers who find that sentence self-evident cannot imagine how far eroded free-speech’s foundations have become. The Middlebury Statement is a thumb in the dike. Its signers deserve wide support, not least from political non-conservatives.  "

https://www.britannica.com/event/Korean-War/Talking-and-fighting-1951-53

" The Chinese need not have worried, for both Eisenhower and secretary of state-designate Dulles viewed continuation of the Korean War as incompatible with U.S. national security interests. In their view the People’s Republic of China was indeed the enemy in Asia, but Korea was only one theatre in the struggle. They also knew that the voting public’s support for the war had thinned throughout 1952 as the talking and fighting continued abroad and the talking and taxing continued at home. As for the negotiations, Dulles conceded the communists’ point that voluntary repatriation should involve screening by an international agency, not just U.S.-ROK teams. When the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross called for an exchange of sick and disabled POWs as a goodwill gesture, Eisenhower approved.

The plan proved a good test of communist intentions—by sheer chance. On March 5, 1953, Joseph Stalin died, and within weeks the Politburo of the Soviet Communist Party voted that the war in Korea should be ended. Mao Zedong received the news with dismay, but he knew that his army could not continue the war without Soviet assistance. With a speed that amazed the negotiating teams on both sides, the Chinese accepted voluntary repatriation. POWs who wanted to return to their homelands would be released immediately, and those who chose to stay would go into the custody of a neutral international agency for noncoercive screening. The Chinese and North Koreans also agreed to the exchange of sick and disabled POWs, which took place between April 20 and May 3.  "
