On Aug. 19, the Sex Pistols will release a box set giving official releases to four concerts from their famous 1976 U.K. tour. Sex Pistols – Live ’76 will be available on both CD and vinyl.

The first concert in the collection is the June 4 show at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester that has attained legendary status because of how it singlehandedly birthed the punk scene in Manchester. According to the a press release on their website, Morrissey, future members of Joy Division and New Order, Mark E. Smith (The Fall) and Mick Hucknall (Simply Red) were all in attendance and were subsequently inspired to form bands. Tony Wilson, the founder of Factory Records, also saw the show. The date was organized by Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto, who had recently formed the Buzzcocks after seeing the band in Welwyn Garden City.

The second disc was recorded Aug. 29 at Screen on the Green in Islington, famously known as the “Midnight Special” gig. Opening for the band were the Buzzcocks and the Clash, who were playing only their third-ever gig. Disc three comes from Sept. 17 at Chelmsford Maximum Security Prison, a show was set up by manager Malcolm McLaren because he wanted the band to play unconventional venues. It’s the only concert in the collection that had been professionally recorded on four-track quarter-inch tape. The final disc is the Sept. 25 date at the 76 Club in Burton-on-Trent that has been circulating as a bootleg.

All four concerts were professionally mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London and feature the original lineup of Johnny Rotten (vocals), Steve Jones (guitar), Glen Matlock (bass) and Paul Cook (drums). Sex Pistols – Live ’76 also contains photographs and a reproduction of their press kit that includes articles from the British rock press. The track listing for all four discs can be found below.

“What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there,” he says. “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.” - Keef

F the Pistols...2 percent talent, 98 percent propaganda and dumb. The Sex Pistols Myth is just that. They weren't good then, they're not going to sound any better on this bloated set, because they never had any talent to speak of to begin with.
