The boys all look incredibly happy ~ what an amazing life they have lived! The exhibit opening just after the Ole tour ending, it  almost seems like putting it all to bed and on display in a museum. They can go out in a blaze of glory as they are on top of the world now.  But I hope not.

Can't wait for this to come to the States.

I hope they bring the whole thing across the pond, and not some scaled-down version.

Here's my feedback from 5th April 11.30 timed ticket.  Helluva queue so don't panic if you are running late! Too many folk in there at any one time so took over 2 hours to get round. Those guitars are stunning and the background info very interesting.  Amazing old documents!  Great value.  Really enjoyed it and will go again.  Won't be taking my 6 yr old Grandson though.  The enjoyment is in the guitars, documents and clothes.  I'll sit with him in the cinema room watching videos instead.

We had quite a little frenzy on twitter last night during this. Fun, but I still wish I could've been there, even if it had meant waiting in line wearing high-heeled boots that long.

Btw, I still hate Facebook. I clicked that link above and immediately one-quarter of the screen was covered by a notification demanding that I log in or sign up. I ignored it and in about a minute it jumped up to cover over half the screen. I see this crap on a lot of sites, windows that jump up in your face demanding that you sign up to their site (and therefore give them an email address to spam or sell to spammers). So I'm not  clicking an FB link again.

LOL

Mick Taylor was invited, don't know the reason why he didn't get the invitation and BTW micktaylor.com and the associated FB page was not registered by Mick, I don't know if later he got it but when created it was registered by "V. Taylor" (they did it that way to pretend being someone related with Mick Taylor, i.e. Valerie)

Did someone mention Mick Taylor???

http://www.express.co.uk/celebrity-news/658838/Rolling-Stones-forgotten-Mick-Tay...

The forgotten Stone: Mick Taylor still at odds with the world’s best known rock band
BITTER row that split the Rolling Stones 42 years ago has erupted again with an angry outburst on Facebook from the man they call the Forgotten Stone: guitarist Mick Taylor.

Mick Taylor is still at odds with The Rolling Stones after 42 years

And all because he wasn’t invited to the opening of the Rolling Stones memorabilia exhibition at the swish Saatchi Gallery in London. Outside the gallery Sir Mick Jagger posed for pictures with Keith Richards, Ronnie Woods and Charlie Watts. Even former bass player Bill Wyman was there. But one person missing from the 500-strong guest list was Taylor, who posted on his social media page: “It appears they are using my name and likeness for another multimillion dollar making exercise.

"I can’t help wondering why nobody has invited me… they could not find it in their hearts to include Mick Taylor.” Taylor, 67, moaned that two tickets were left on the door only after a fan complained to the gallery. “My office received a reply at the eleventh hour that they would let me have two tickets, which needed to be collected before 3pm. They know I live overseas so this does not qualify as an invitation. They waited until it became a logistical impossibility to attend.”

In a stinging sign-off he wrote: “I’m part of the Stones’ history and legacy, which is what this retrospective exhibition is about, isn’t it? The band’s best work – in the studio and on stage – was done while I was involved.” So who is the Forgotten Stone and what has he been doing in the 42 years since he quit?

Taylor came from a working-class family in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, and learned to play the guitar in school bands. In 1965 he went to a John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers concert but star guitarist Eric “Slowhand” Clapton didn’t show. Taylor plucked up the courage in the interval to ask Mayall if he could play the second half. Mayall was so impressed that they swapped phone numbers.

A year later, with Clapton gone and a second guitarist about to leave, Mayall hired Taylor and the music world was agog at how a shy 17-year-old could replace Clapton. Meantime the Stones were recording a string of hits, vying with The Beatles for the No 1 one slot week after week. Then in 1969 Brian Jones was kicked out over his drug addiction and Mayall unselfishly recommended Taylor. Taylor believed he was being called in as a studio session musician but Jagger and Richards were so impressed they invited him back the next day to continue recording, including the mega-hit Honky Tonk Woman.

Taylor’s stage debut as a Stone, at 20, was a free concert in Hyde Park in July 1969. More than 250,000 people watched a show that turned into a tribute to Jones, who had died three days earlier. As Jagger and Richards hogged the spotlight Taylor was the curlyhaired lad at the back modestly getting on with his job. He was one of the most brilliant guitarists of the age, head and shoulders above Richards, and later said of the gig: “I just couldn’t believe how bad they sounded. Their timing was awful.

"They sounded like a typical bunch of guys in a garage. Playing out of tune and too loudly. I thought, ‘How is it possible that this band can make hit records?’” Taylor held his tongue and stayed with the Stones until 1974. It wasn’t easy – age was a problem, for example. Taylor was five years younger than Jagger and Richards, eight years younger than Charlie Watts and 12 years younger than Bill Wyman. And the music wasn’t challenging enough. He remembers being bored on stage and once said that 72 minutes of a Stones’ concert seemed to go on for hours.

“For me it was personally restricting. I’m not saying that it wasn’t fun being in the Stones. It was a helluva lot of fun, it was great. But I had to move on.” In his five years as a Stone, Taylor featured on albums such as Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main St and Jagger and Taylor formed a close musical relationship. In November 1973 things turned sour. Richards confronted him and said, “Oi! Taylor! You’re playing too f****** loud. I mean, you’re really good live, man, but you’re f****** useless in the studio.”

Richards erased some of the tapes on which Taylor had recorded guitar parts. Just before It’s Only Rock ’n’ Roll came out in 1974 Taylor told a journalist he had cowritten two of the tracks with Jagger but wasn’t being given a credit on the record sleeve. It bugged him – and still does to this day – and so at a party for the band he told Jagger he was quitting. “Let’s put it this way, without my contribution those songs would not have existed,” he says.

“We used to fight and argue all the time. I just felt like I’d had enough. I never felt I was gonna stay with the Stones for ever.” Taylor left to form a band with Jack Bruce, of Cream, and appeared on The Old Grey Whistle Test but the band disbanded after a year. What followed was a whirlwind. Taylor recorded a solo album which got to No 119 in the charts, toured Europe first with Ten Years After then with John Mayall.

He teamed up with Mark Knopfler, of Dire Straits, to play on a live Bob Dylan album, then guested with the Grateful Dead at Madison Square Garden. Taylor lived in New York, Los Angeles and Miami as he battled addiction demons and toured as a session man with different bands. On the way he got married, divorced and fathered two daughters. In the mid- 1990s he returned to the UK and joined John Mayall for his 70th birthday concert with Eric Clapton.

Lots of session work followed, then in 2007 he toured America with the Experience Hendrix tribute band. Amazingly, despite all the bitterness, Taylor has maintained a musical relationship with the Stones, appearing in their 2012 Reunion, 50 & Counting... and 14 On Fire world tours. He’s also done recording sessions with them and after one astonishing solo Richards is said to have joked: “That’s why I never liked you, you b******!” With their last three tours grossing over £700million, Jagger is now worth an estimated £200million and Richards only a little less.

Taylor lives modestly: his last address in England was a semi in Suffolk and now he’s abroad but no one’s sure where. Taylor may be in the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame but he’s the Rolling Stone who gathered no dosh.

I see they have a display at Exhibitionism which states that they've played 1,679 concerts

Even though as long ago as August 2006 I calculated that (allowing for a tiny margin of error) they'd played exactly 2,000 concerts (excluding TV and radio appearances) - and they acknowledged this (and credited this site) at the time on their official website and even interviewed the band about it.

Good to see that they're keeping up the trend used in their compilations and archive releases in recent years of using researchers who dont seem to be able to do a simple google search.

1,679 concerts! They would have reached that figure around 1998. I reckon they've overlooked the fact that in the 60's they regularly played two shows on the same day.

They've undercalculated by about 33%. I havent checked the up to date figure but as of 2016 it's probably around 2,150.

EXACTLY! It seems that MICK T was either intentionally left out or was a late afterthought. BUT MICK T surely knew about Exhibitionism in advance (we did) so he could have made some calls and travel plans in advance if was into it and really wanted to go.

An expanded touring Exhibition would hopefully utilise additional gallery space to the extent of two moderately to decently sized rooms devoted exclusively to Trousers and at least one cubby-hole, closet or ante-room (possibly accessible via the currently locked door to the right of the Edith Groove kitchen recreation) that could be devoted to Stones-related under-garments.

I know it was posted earlier...but it went away with all the rest from last week...

Coming to New York's Industria Superstudio in November 2016, Exhibitionism is a once in a lifetime celebration of the creative life of true rock ‘n’ roll legends.

The Rolling Stones’ first ever major exhibition, Exhibitionism, delivered by DHL, will make its North American debut in New York City in November. Following its star-studded opening in London, which garnered rave reviews and drew huge crowds, Exhibitionism, will come across the pond to the iconic Industria Superstudio (775 Washington Street) in the West Village. Exhibitionism is the largest touring experience of its kind ever to be staged, and the first time in history the band has unlocked their vast private archive.

Thanks PA for the exhibitionist info! So I  guess they will announce a show or more in the NY area sometime around November.

Managed to get to see it in London on Saturday, a day before it closed.

Hugely enjoyable. Better than I hoped (despite the gaffe about them chronicling some 1670 concerts after they'd officially acknowledged 10 years ago that this site had calculated they'd done 2,000 - looking at the timeline, I get the impression they're listing a lot of early dates as one concert on a day when they usually did a matinee and evening gig)

Anyway, no big deal. Really enjoyed the re-creation of Edith Grove, the studio room (the nerd in me wanted to steal all those studio notebooks and I could have stayed for hours at that mixing desk) and the 3-D finale was pretty special. Quite a few new things to learn about the Stones, even after all this time.

(Did you know that the hand that Mick is biting on the cover of 'Love You Live' belongs to his daughter Jade? Me neither)

New York is up next in November. Dont miss it. I read a post from Stones fan Foxy in New Zealand who says its coming to Sydney in November 2018.  There'll be a few others before that I'm sure.

Oh, and the prices of some of the souvenirs in the shop are eye watering. £225 for a fucking umbrella?

Keith Richards on Mick Jagger, his mom and Bob Dylan’s Nobel Prize

By Hardeep Phull November 11, 2016

The Beatles had Brian Epstein, but the Rolling Stones’ secret extra member was Keith Richards’ mother, Doris.

That’s how the guitarist recalls the dynamic of the band’s earliest days. Before their first single had even been released, Richards lived with second guitarist Brian Jones and singer Mick Jagger in a West London apartment in 1962 and 1963.

“It was a hovel,” the 72-year-old rocker tells The Post, growling into the telephone from his home in Connecticut.

“My mum saved us — she washed our clothes for us and sent them back. Brian had a hanger-on who would do anything. We were very rude to him, but he’d do all the gofering for us. So we’d bundle up the washing in brown paper, give him the money for the stamps, and he’d take it to the post office and pick it up five days later. That was my mum’s contribution to the band. She was like the sixth Stone back then!”

A reconstruction of that apartment is one of the main attractions at “Exhibitionism: The Rolling Stones,” which opens Saturday at Industria Superstudio in the West Village. The re-creation is as grim as Richards would have you believe; it features half-eaten food, discarded cigarettes, and there’s even mold growing on the walls.

The show collects hundreds of items from the band’s history, including instruments, posters, clothes worn by the guys, and much more. The exhibit (which opened in London last year) marks the first time the group has opened up its private archives for fans to see.

For Richards, it brings back memories, particularly of the band’s Spartan infancy, which is a world away from the huge brand the Rolling Stones would become over the ensuing five decades. You can’t blame Richards for getting a little misty-eyed.

“Me, Mick and Brian would sit in front of a phonograph in that flat, and listen to Chicago blues and country blues for hours, trying to figure out what these guys were playing and how we’d ever get anywhere close to it. We were dedicated, idealistic — and stupid!”

Other noteworthy pieces on display include Jagger’s lyric book (which features the words to hits including “Miss You” and “Worried About You”), the toy drum kit used by Charlie Watts in the recording of “Street Fighting Man” and several of Richards’ guitars. One features colorful, psychedelic patterns, painted on it by Richards himself after taking LSD in 1967.

But, as Richards recalls, he wasn’t quite as gung-ho as his bandmates and contemporaries when it came to seeking out the spiritual awakenings that the late ’60s offered up.

“Brian and Mick were quite carried away with the Beatles and the Maharishi [Mahesh Yogi] and the blah, blah,” he says dismissively. “I stayed on the periphery, and Charlie didn’t give a s - - t about it. It was all love, love, love, wearing garish Indian cotton and growing beards and s - - t.”

Although Jagger briefly became a student of the Maharishi in 1967, he didn’t join the Beatles on their famous visit to India in 1968, where they practiced an intensive course of Transcendental Meditation.

“I thought the Maharishi was a piece of s - - t. I despised the man. I felt sorry for John [Lennon] and Paul [McCartney], who is still a good mate. It was the flavor of the month. He did ruin The Beatles. I wasn’t interested. I was busy writing ‘Gimme Shelter’!”

Although the nostalgia factor is sky-high at the exhibit, the Rolling Stones have been gearing up for a new chapter in their career. Last month, they played a well-received set at the Desert Trip festival in Indio, Calif. — affectionately known as “Oldchella” for its boomer-centric lineup. Performing just before them was a hotly tipped up-and-comer by the name of Bob Dylan.

“I thought it was very far-reaching for the Nobel people to give Bob the prize for literature,” says Richards. “I think it’s the first time us songwriters have been begrudgingly let into the literary world. But that’s good, especially because all those bastards like Shakespeare ever did was to steal songs and ballads from minstrels [medieval folk singers in England]!”

The group is also preparing to release its first studio album since 2005. “Blue & Lonesome,” out Dec. 2, is a collection of blues songs written and originally recorded by the likes of Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter, Willie Dixon and others.

Fifty-four years after the studious listening sessions Richards, Jagger and Jones would have in their London flat, the Rolling Stones are now paying direct homage to the artists who inspired them. And the scrappy, rough feel of the recordings suggests they had a blast doing it.

“In three days, the Stones cut 12 tracks,” says Richards. “That’s a record in itself. Eric Clapton was in the next studio, so we collared him to play on it, too. Eric was part of the Stones before he could even play. When we were playing the clubs, he was one of our top fans.”

In recent years, Richards has spoken about Jagger in unflattering terms. In one 2011 interview with the Observer of London, Richards compared Jagger to Maria Callas and referred to him as a “diva” whom the rest of the band [Watts and guitarist Ron Wood] have to be careful not to annoy.

But working in close quarters on “Blue & Lonesome” appears to have brought some more endearing and admirable Jagger traits to the surface.

“On this album, you can hear how much he’s a part of the band and what a musician he is,” says Richards. “Because he’s such a showman, a lot of his actual talent gets hidden. But on this record, he can feel very proud of himself. I’ve always loved the man. It’s just that I have to kick his ass now and again!”

“Exhibitionism: The Rolling Stones” opens Saturday and runs through March 12. Admission is $37 for adults. Industria Superstudio, 775 Washington St.; StonesExhibitionism.com.

The article centers around Exhibitionism with the HTW thing as a side note.

Didn't think it worthy of a new thread.

Probably just for publicity. Doubt they'll play.

I went to the exhibit in NYC last weekend.  You absolutely have to get there or go to Chicago.  Just go.  It's stellar.  I was ridiculously close to guitars that created the sounds I learned to play on my own guitar.  It was almost emotional!

I went yesterday. Completely unreal amount of stuff inside...emotional?

Emotional?

Yes!

You'll be inches from the guitars that made all of your favorite songs. You'll read Mick's lyrics from his original books.

Master tape boxes, costumes, posters, promotional items and endless other artifacts are there.

Casual fans need not attend.

When in NYC, they told me it takes about 90 minutes to tour the show. I blew that out of the water. I was there for hours. So good.

Ya know, in the old days the cops were all over the Stones pretty much everywhere they went.

I guess now they'll just be all over Stan's Donuts.

Exhibitionism is well worth seeing.  Saw it 2x in Las Vegas recently and it really emphasizes how the Stones are more than just a band, they are a worldwide cultural phenomenon and have been so for more than 50 years.  I especially enjoyed the way the many tours were superimposed on a flat screen globe over the course of the years where I could go "I was at that show, and that one, and that one...".  Grand finale of the exhibit was not a big deal for me, even in 3D (VIP admission perk), as I have seen the Stones live so many times that it just could not do justice to the real thing but I can see how a casual fan who maybe has not had the chance to attend a show could find it really amazing.  Staff in LV confirmed that Nashville is the next city on the tour.
