Those of you who say this man wasn't battling demons need to STFU and be thankful your lives are perfect.  Be thankful you never felt the pain of mental illness.  The pain of being alive, and hating yourself.  Most people can't take time off from everything to seek the proper treatment they need.  Street drugs offer a temporary escape, but it is only temporary.  So, repeat and repeat.

Sorry for being so blunt, but the some of the mindless posts here made me irate.

RIP Scott.

exactly… addictions aren't a choice.

When you have the people, resources, and opportunity to get clean and you go back to the **** as many times and as quickly as he did every time....yes. I know plenty of people that have had far fewer resources and chosen to stay clean. I realize that personal responsibility is a concept lost on society nowadays but that doesn't make it OK.

just because you choose to discriminate that there's a difference between an addict with money or not, shows you aren't educated on this topic…
poor people get sober, rich people get sober… they also die… and there is no way to know going into to treatment who will get sober or stay sober… but people do through many various ways from AA to religion or medication to those who just stop. I'm assuming you're not an addict… but I am, so i at least have my experience on this subject and i'm not glorifying his death or condemning him or others for this… he's just dead and it's sad. but I'm not, and I'm clear on what is keeping me alive and sober.

RE: Mary's essay----

Wow...very powerful, personal and raw.  I also think its unfair because Scott is not here to tell us his side or to defend himself.  RIP Scott.

People who've never had to deal with addiction can't understand addiction.

A celebrity drug addict like Scott Weiland, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones or Jim Morrison is the same as the drug addict in your neighborhood or your family when it comes to the impact drugs make. You can lose your job, your friends and your life.

Yes I know this first hand.  Every addict has a choice to get and stay off the shit.  Some do and some don't.  It is particularly shameful when those with more resources choose not to.

Some of you should quit making assumptions about me and get off of your reactionary soap boxes.

Who is making assumptions about you?  I'm not a a soap box.  I just speaking about my personal experience with mental illness.  Yes, I have dealt with it, and I doing great for the first time in years.  Believe me I did not choose to be mentally ill.  The pain of mental illness is something that I would not wish upon anybody.  Hopefully you Job will never experience it.  Hopefully, you will gain a better understanding of which you have no understanding of.  There are no choices with mental illness.

Hmm . . . well, it depends on your definition of "first hand."

12-step programs believe that the disease is cunning, baffling, and powerful. Your lack of understanding of the word 'choice' and description of 'shameful' lead me to indeed climb aboard my reactionary soap box and declare that you have no idea what you're talking about. Zero. Or you are in denial about yourself, or a loved one. Put another way, & paraphrasing, the first step to recovery is admitting that you are  . . .wrong. In the past, I've learned to shut it and climb back into my hole when I'm this far behind. Of course, as 'We' say, its just a suggestion to you.

Scott Weiland’s High School Photos Reveal a Jock Who Also Loved Choir

By Chris Epting December 16, 2015

As the music world mourns the loss of Scott Weiland, friends and fans have been recalling many of his iconic performances with Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, among other projects.

But before all of that rock-star excess, high school yearbook photos reveal Weiland as a typical teenager in Southern California – a jock who also enjoyed his time spent in choir.

Prior to meeting bassist and eventual Stone Temple Pilots bandmate Robert DeLeo at a 1986 Black Flag concert in Long Beach, Calif., Weiland was a student at Edison High School in nearby Huntington Beach, graduating that same year. Weiland had been born in Santa Cruz in 1967, moved to Ohio as a child, and returned to California as teenager.

As the yearbooks attest, Weiland was a fresh-faced, popular kid who played football and volleyball, wrestled, sang in both the Men’s Choir and the Accapella Choir and was a homecoming King of Courts nominee. He was also apparently known by the nickname “Wyner.”

Artistic greatness still awaited Scott Weiland. But even back then, the Class of ’86 graduate already seemed to be a bit of a rock star, a solid kid who left behind a well-remembered legacy.

He was buried on Dec. 10 at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, after dying of cardiac arrest in Bloomington, Minn., after an appearance with the Wildabouts. Weiland’s personal manager discovered the 48-year-old unresponsive in a tour-bus bedroom. A mix of both prescription and illegal drugs was found on board.

The author of that article has recently posted on this board.

Wish he would post more often.
