Keith Richards Announces New Solo LP 'Crosseyed Heart'

BY DANIEL KREPS

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards will release 'Crosseyed Heart,' his third solo album and first in 23 years, this September

The Rolling Stones may be wrapping up their Zip Code tour next week, but Keith Richards doesn't plan on gathering moss: The guitarist will release Crosseyed Heart, his third solo album and first since 1992's Main Offender, on September 18th, with first single "Trouble" set for release July 17th.

Richards and drummer Steve Jordan wrote and produced the majority of Crosseyed Heart, with guitarist Waddy Wachtel and Rolling Stones backup singer Bernard Fowler also assisting on the project. "I had a ball making this new record and working with Steve Jordan and Waddy Wachtel again," Richards said in a statement. "There's nothing like walking into a studio and having absolutely no idea what you’re going to come out with on the other end. If you're looking for 'Trouble,' you've come to the right place."

Jordan and Wachtel are longtime members of Richards' X-Pensive Winos backing band and featured prominently both on Richards' 1988 solo debut Talk as Cheap (Jordan co-wrote all of that LP's tracks with Richards) as well as Main Offender. Fowler also sang on Main Offender, which was produced by Richards, Wachtel and Jordan. "[Wachtel] is a natural maestro," Richards told Rolling Stone in 2013. "He can take a song to further heights than you expected, beyond expectations. I envy him, quite honestly."

Keyboardist Ivan Neville and singer Sarah Dash also appear on Crosseyed Heart, while special guests include Norah Jones on the ballad duet "Illusion," Spooner Oldham on "Lovers Plea," famed multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell on "Robbed Blind" and Aaron Neville on "Nothing on Me." A pair of tracks, "Amnesia" and "Blues in the Morning," also feature contributions from late Stones saxophonist Bobby Keys.

Richards himself plays both electric and acoustic guitars, bass and piano and on Crosseyed Heart, which is described as a "musical journey that takes in reggae ('Love Overdue'), rock ('Trouble'), country ('Robbed Blind') and the blues ('Blues in the Morning')."

In April, Rolling Stone asked Richards whether he would tour in support of his upcoming solo LP. "That's being kicked around," Richards said. "At the moment, I'm just getting my head into the Stones and I haven't really thought about what I'm going to do afterwards. But usually if I put a record out, I do some road work. So, it's possible." At the time, Richards revealed that his solo album was finished, but he was waiting for the Stones to wrap up their tour.

Despite the solo LP, Richards is also eager to hit the studio with the Rolling Stones soon to record a follow-up to 2005's A Bigger Bang. "We're talking about doing some recording after this tour, but there's nothing definite. We just threw out the idea. I'd like to get the boys back in the studio again, yeah. Anything can happen," Richards said. "I'd like to see just how far they can evolve. I have no demands or particular visions for them, but you're just part of this thing and I want to see how far it will go."

It's been over 20 years, but The Rolling Stones' guitarist Keith Richards is going solo again. As his legendary rock band embarks on its Zip Code Tour 2015, Richards has announced the release of his third official solo album Crosseyed Heart.

Crosseyed Heart is due for release on Sept. 18 via Republic Records, according to a press release. Richards' new album is due to feature 15 new songs* which blend together the artistry of reggae, rock, country and the blues. A full tracklist has yet to be unveiled, but Crosseyed Heart is due to feature songs such as "Robbed Blind," "Blues in the Morning" [b]and "Love Overdue."[/b]

Crooner Norah Jones also appears on the new album with a "captivating" duet.

The new record will be led by the single "Trouble," which will be released later this month on Friday, July 17. "Trouble" not only features Richards on his comfortable guitar but the musician also took on vocal and bass duties for the new song.

"I had a ball making this new record and working with Steve Jordan and Waddy Wachtel again. There's nothing like walking into a studio and having absolutely no idea what you're going to come out with on the other end. If you're looking for 'Trouble,' you've come to the right place," Richards said in a statement.

Crosseyed Heart will be Richards' third solo album and his first release since 1992's Main Offender. Richards' first solo album Talk Is Cheap was released in 1988 and featured singles such as "Take It So Hard" and "You Don't Move Me."

(* Note - 'Love Overdue' is a reggae cover - Gazza)

Not to split hairs. But I don't see where it says it's a Winos record. Just Keith Richards solo.

Finally!! (I am still happy about it).

Curious how it holds up... Wonder how Keiths writing chops are now-a-dayz. Is he 'Producing' it with anyone? Is Jordan co-producing it or anything on it?

At any rate.. I will be purchasing it as soon as it's available.

And maybe too honest.

My dick is hard after reading this news.

New Keith Richards music. The last record he put out I was in high school.

I love his albums and apart from Charlie, his albums are the best. I still listen to the first two all the time because almost every song on them is outstanding. The only thing that is disappointing is the title. Absolutely horrible title. It sounds like something the modern Rod Stewart would come up with.

It is an odd thing to eat a baguette with eggs while stumblin on a line about the happy state of Steel Wheels' private parts. But while I digest this unneeded side-effect, allow me to say I am very happy about this too.

And since I missed that goddamn Wino's gig in Rotterdam in the early 90's: keep on rollin Keef!

It tells you in the article.

I'm very pleased he's releasing it. New music is always very welcome and its exciting news.

I think however that its worth remembering that Main Offender was 23 years ago, and its not as if this is a follow up. Maybe a lot to ask to expect a record as good as that and Talk is Cheap. A lot has happened since the early 90's.

Friday is an odd day for a release. I presume thats for continental Europe as that's the normal release day there. UK would normally be the following Monday, and the US a day after that.

Not sure about Japan - isnt that usually a day before EU (ie Thursdays) ?

I didn't see it in the article... and I rely on what I miss in these tidbits to be fully explained to me by you ... so out with it .. ..

Anyway, I know I have been a naysayer of "said album" and I honestly think my point held a lot of water every bit as much as the release of this thing. It was a four year friggin album ...

In addition, and as well not to split hairs but I also disagree with this being a "Wino's" release. It isn't.... though a few of them play and help out all over the record it is not an "Expensive Wino's" band album. It is a Keith Richard's solo effort....(just sayin).

At any rate...I thought it would be a December (around the holidays) release (...IF it came out at all).

Glad it is finally coming out... a little long winded (or behind schedule ...then again...what friggin schedule... the four year schedule bahahahah ...)  which ever you wanna call it.. but still I must admit I am anxious to purchase it.

They're all titled and marketed as Keith Richards albums, except the live album which was credited to 'Keith Richards and the Expensive Winos' (similar to how some live Springsteen albums are credited with the E Street Band on the album cover).

This will actually be the 4th Richards solo album, the 3rd being the great Wingless Angles album.

I see... I actually thought Talk Is Cheap was actually, technically labled as an Expensive Wino's album (ie Keith Richards and The Expensive Wino's) but I see now that is / was not the case.  I thought Main Offender was not a Winos release as was his previous work but had a few of them on it as does this album is how I thought the story went (I see now it wasnt that way ...thx)  I understand now that none were officially Winos releases. As a side note...Main Offender is my fav out of the two thus far. I hear Wingless Angels is marvelous from Gazza and several others here. I simply must hear it in it's entirety.

Ian

Huh? How could you miss it? There's about two paragraphs in a short article - reposted as the first post in this thread - telling you who produced it and who played on it. And its a Winos album, judging by that personnel.

There's...shall we say...some Stones demos doing the rounds that arent in general circulation, and having listened to this again after a tip from another poster on here, we've both come to the conclusion that the melody of this song is at least 13 years old.

The Stones cut a song with the same tune in Paris in 2002 during the sessions which produced the four new songs that featured on '40 Licks'

Fascinating.

So they chose "Keys to My Heart" over this? Shit!

The demo doesnt have finished lyrics. The working title, with Mick 'singing' is called 'Because' .

I dont think they finished too many songs for those sessions. They apparently cut about 25-30 tracks, but they were only there for about three weeks, so I guess almost all were quickly discarded.

Kind of validates my hunch for why Keith got bowled over during the ABB sessions. Mick comes in with a bushel of far-along, pre-produced demos, while Keith comes in with "bones" of songs. And, at least since Licks, they're in a hurry to get in and out of the studio. Consequently Keith's stuff falls by the wayside.

Funny thing is, if they do attempt to make another record, after Keith has withdrawn 15 songs from his account, the same pattern will likely reoccur!

Well then if that is the case ... hell they are <all> Winos albums right?...  This is <not> a 'Keith Richards and The Expensive Winos' release ...it is an "official" Keith Richards solo album.

Even unofficially ... it isn't like we know at least some or all of The Winos played on every single track... Sure...they helped out all over the album ...but they are playing on a Keith Richards solo album ... along with Nora Jones... Bobby Keyes... Aaron Neville ... Waddy Watchel ... Larry Cambell ... Fowler ... etc. etc... ...and who knows who else. They are certainly the main contributors besides Keith it would seem .. BUt it is not an Expensive Winos release... because they are there playing on and supporting his solo record with many others... not going into it as a band effort.

As well .. I somehow missed the start of the paragraph stating that Keith and Jordan produced the album.

It's growing on me.  Strange how early 90s it sounds.

Anyway, Richards electric guitar in this year of our Lord 2015 (or at least 2002), he always provides.

The KR recording is all redone from the 2002 Stones demo and has a bit different feel.  Gazza, the original working title of the song was Just Because, and you can hear Keith start at least one verse with that, so that must of been part of the "bones" he presented.  Always liked the song best of that set of songs they didn't pursue.  With Mick's vocalizing it sounded a bit more Hang Fire, or like one of the country oriented tracks on the Some Girls deluxe.

Yo Teddy! Good to see you here, mate! It's me, Muppet Hi Fi from IMCT.

Pay attention to this man, people. Along with Gazza, there's not many people on the Internets who have a deeper love and understanding of the fine art form known as Rock n' Roll Music (special shout outs to Marky Dread and Heston too).

Oh yeah, I really dig "Trouble". Funky little number I reckon. Very nice vocal as well.

There have been additional guests on every previous Winos album. Just like there have been additional guests on every Stones album. I don't see how this is so hard to grasp.

It's credited as a Keith solo album because the record deal is in HIS name.

Oh yeah, it does sound kind of like something Paul would lay down in a hurry in his basement, i.e. 'Stereo/Mono', 'Come Feel Me Tremble', 'Folker', '49 Minutes', etc.

I love Steve Jordan's clattering drum pattern on this (he's so freakin' great, probably even with Clapton and John Mayer!).
Here's hoping this one lives up to the two great Wino's albums (sounds like it will based on Trouble. Took him bloody long enough!).

Wingless Angels is not a solo record. He produced it and added some vocals etc. If that is what it takes to be considered a solo record, the album he did for Aaron Neville is really a Keef album. keef produced it, added vocals AND guitars.

Wingless Angels is not a solo record.

Trouble has bits of the Can't You Hear Me Knocking/Will But You Won't descending guitar pattern.  It sounds good! -- I'll take it and looking forward to hearing the entire album.

The version on youtube seems to be the album version (with an extra verse) and clocks in at 4:17 - the one premiered the other day appears to be a radio edit (3:17).

Awful sound quality on Keith's youtube vevo channel. Its quite distorted for some reason.  The official download sounds a lot better.

A member of the Steve Hoffmann forum called mretrain posted this earlier :

Heard it all last night - there are country songs, electric blues, an acoustic blues, some things like Trouble (which is the least good of those IMO but the most Stones-like so makes sense as first single) and a bit of reggae.

It's very much Keith World - you have to go to it rather than it come to you, but once you're there it's pretty great...

And a pic of the man himself at the mastering session for the album at Sterling Sound, with the original vinyl acetate (I presume this is the same photo  Steel Wheels was talking about)

I loved it on first listen, but it's tapered a lot since then. The problem with this type of thing for me is that Keith appears to be recycling riffs. His first two records are absolute jewels and there is not a track on either one of those records that I don't like apart from Words of Wonder.

For all the criticism that Mick gets, he tries to put out something new and push himself creatively. I still take Keith's first two records over Mick's but when you don't put out anything on the solo front for over 20 years, it gets a little rusty. There is nothing that is vibrant about this. It sounds like Keith trying to sound like Keith. It also appears that Charley Drayton is not on this album which, if true, is also disappointing. He is an amazing drummer and equally good on the bass. I hope the rest of the album is better.

Oddly enough thats possibly my favourite of the lot (along with 'Hate It When You Leave').  Seems most people seem to prefer Talk is Cheap, but I've always thought Main Offender is the best of any Stones solo albums. Played both of them back to back the other day and it's only enhanced my opinion

I agree about 'Main Offender'. Though the songs are uniformly wonderful on both albums, there's a certain sheen and near glossiness to 'Talk Is Cheap', which is very appropriate for a debut album, but Main Offender sounds more live in the studio, replete with the odd almost-missed chord or other technical imperfection. And the mix is deeper, murkier, and richer than Talk Is Cheap; there's a lot to be uncovered there, sorta like Exile. And "999" is a true beast, all one and a half chords of it; (one of my bands used to play it, and we could never figure out if that backing vocal chant was 'leave her, leave her' or what. Very ominous song and soundscape). Oh, and I love Words of Wonder too.

Finally!! (I am still happy about it).

Curious how it holds up... Wonder how Keiths writing chops are now-a-dayz. Is he 'Producing' it with anyone? Is Jordan co-producing it or anything on it?

At any rate.. I will be purchasing it as soon as it's available.

Ian

It tells you in the article.

I'm very pleased he's releasing it. New music is always very welcome and its exciting news.

I think however that its worth remembering that Main Offender was 23 years ago, and its not as if this is a follow up. Maybe a lot to ask to expect a record as good as that and Talk is Cheap. A lot has happened since the early 90's.

____________________________________________

Ian

Huh? How could you miss it? There's about two paragraphs in a short article - reposted as the first post in this thread - telling you who produced it and who played on it. And its a Winos album, judging by that personnel.

______________________________________________

Ian

There have been additional guests on every previous Winos album. Just like there have been additional guests on every Stones album. I don't see how this is so hard to grasp.

It's credited as a Keith solo album because the record deal is in HIS name.

_____________________________________________

Sure there have been guests on most (almost all...if I'm not mistaken) Stones albums... and sure all the other musicians on Keith's solo records.

What I am saying is this... this threads title is labling this as a Winos single ... well technically it's not. It is a single from Keith Richards.

Now if The Winos are playing on every track well then I'd have to say you're certainly right... but who knows? Jordan may not even play drums on all the album? There may be songs with no Wino members what-so-ever. It would be pretty hard to call it an unoffical Winos record if that is the case. I am sure they are major contributors but I am not convinced all members are there on every track ... or that there are even winos on every song. If that's the case.. it's still primarily a KR solo album with the Winos involved is more to the point.

Let's wait and see before telling everyone it's just a Winos Record again ... but with a KR solo tag lol geez lol.

Ian, mate - both KR and the Wino's albums were listed/marketed as "Keith Richards solo albums". (other than the live Palladium album).

Keith has said that Steve Jordan was involved with production, and I'm fairly certain that's he on the drums on "Trouble" (I'm a drummer and a big fan of Steve's work).

I don't know who's on bass - could be Charley, could be Steve, could be Keith or Waddy or nearly anyone.

Not sure what your point is here; as I've said before: Springsteen studio albums that feature the E Street Band are still credited to/market as "Bruce Springsteen" albums, and only a couple live ones (and DVD's) have been listed as "Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band". Similar situation to many Neil Young albums that feature Crazy Horse as the band.

I thought his first album was titled as an expensive Winos release.. is where this is comng from. I thought it was titles as that and in which they backed him up and played on every track. I was simply stating that may not be the scenario behind the scenes on this one ..and that it's not officially a Winos release as I 'thought" (though now I se Im wrong) his first album was. This is why I was sort of confused. No big deal.

Now I get it .. people are saying..it's another Winos type / affiliated product is all. That I agree with. Was a misunderstanding. Again, No biggy.

The original marketing for Talk is Cheap and Main Offender reference Keith Richards only. The X-Pensive Winos was not in the marketing material. Here is a link to the covers of the various singles. There's no mention of the Winos.

http://stones7.com/s7/html/lantern/solo_kr.php?PHPSESSID=55762f7162f8577179b4ebd...

When the Live at the Palladium CD was released, the cover features the Winos logo. The text is "Keith Richards and the X-Pensive Winos." There may be some print ads for Talks is Cheap and Main Offender that make mention of the Winos, but I can't recall a single one.

In message board jargon, I feel as though people say "Winos" when speaking about Keith solo records. In the periods when the Stones are not touring, people state, "I wish Keef would get the Winos back together and do some club shows!"

But none of this matters. We have a new record on the horizon with 15 tracks and a smoking hot single and a cool video out now!

Quite correct.

The name 'X-Pensive Winos' didnt exist until after Talk is Cheap was done and Keith mentioned in promotional interviews that he'd come up with a name for them during the sessions because they'd been polishing off some high quality vino.

I bought this for $1.29 and burned it to a CD so I could play on my stereo system. It sounds great at high volume where the guitars jump right out at you. Catchy melody that grows on you. If as the one reviewer who has heard the whole album says this is a weaker track...then I cant wait for the album!!!

The new issue of MOJO (issue 262, September 2015) has our man on the front cover and contains an interview inside with Pat Gilbert

Its a pretty good read. Some standard Keith bullshit, some funny tales and one liners and a few quite candid moments of poignancy (asked about one thing he could have changed he replied "I feel I could have done more for Brian Jones").

The most interesting to me about his recent activity is in a sidebar interview with Steve Jordan who says that 'after Keith did his book tour. he actually contemplated retirement......  He hadnt played for a while, so we took the recording process really slowly - bi weekly to start with, just a few hours. We'd knock about a tune he already had, maybe one he'd even cut a demo with in the Stones '.  (which is precisely what 'Trouble' is). The record seems to have been initiated as far back as 2008 and intended as a companion piece to 'Life'.

A copy of the album - sourced from one of the listening parties - has now leaked and is doing the rounds.

Its not CD quality soundwise but its pretty listenable.

No doubt people will send copies to each other - which is understandable enough, although obviously fans will buy the record when it comes out anyway - but we'd ask you to please NOT post uploads (or links to uploads) of the songs on this site ahead of the album's official release on September 18.

Reviews are, of course, more than welcome.

I've personally heard absolutely nothing so far.

That of course doesnt mean it wont happen - and if he's playing shows, I'd guess they'll be theatres so they wont exactly need much time to sell them.

The album is out a month from today. Maybe we'll hear some news of shows around the time when we hear word of any TV/media appearances to promote the release.

From what I have read (IORR) folks that have this copy seem very positive about this album. Seems like a waste to wait until mid September so far after the listening rounds. Here is my prediction////..Keith wins a Grammy....as best new artist!

Listened to it twice and I like the album. The main riff in Substantial Damage sounds like a sped up riff from 1:35 into "If You Can't Rock Me". They're almost identical actually. There's another one that sounds similar to "Baby Break It Down".

Gotta hear it a few more times, but it seems pretty good to me so far.

I was able to acquire the download link and will be listening later today. As requested by Gazza I will not post the link here. First run through of snippets was ok but nothing jumped out.....but it is not studio quality and I only listened to a bit of each tune so reserving opinion.

The final song - My Lover's Plea - is an utter gem of a track.

If only Otis had still been around.  I can just imagine him covering it.

Will reserve full judgement until I hear the whole album in perfect sound quality, but it certainly gets a thumbs-up.

was going to file a somewhat blasé review after listening to the boot download. Then this unlocked track and you hear the tune jump out at you. So I'm going to wait. I have found after a few listens that there is a lot of familiarity. Hopefully that fades as I hear each track in pure sound. Sadly for me so many of the lyrics...brilliant as they are mirror my own life the past year...and haunt me.

that shit is outstanding. About 2/3rds of the way through I realize I have been smiling the entire time and then smile some more.

Looking at the official site to order this and they have it listed as a 15 song LP. I just listened to the whole thing again and I'm pretty sure this is over an hour long. Is this really a single vinyl LP at that length?

borrowed from another blog....Kudos to whomever said it first:

This Amnesia sounds great.  Richards comes back from the frying pan into the piss!  The man is revitalized.  A spiritual awakening.  This is an inspiration to all of us, rich, poor, fat, thin, drunk, high, tall, short.  You can project forward of your limitations.  You can do what you once did, and fulfill the promises of yesteryear.

Keith interview in the new issue of UNCUT which just popped through my letterbox (he's not on the cover, Macca is, and the interview's not as extensive as the one he gave MOJO)

Good piece though. He's still not sure about the likelihood of some Winos live shows yet (although I get the impression that if he does, there wouldnt be too many) and he let slip that the Stones will be back on the road around February 2016.

As speculated previously on here, he confirms that the  album was finished 'about 18 months ago' and that he was just sitting on it waiting for a break in Stones' activity to release and promote it - which ended up happening when their plans to tour this autumn were put on hold.

[b Just wish he'd released more after Main Offender. He's had so much to offer but, he seems less motivated than Jagger to go it alone. Anyway, I'll be buying that one for sure. I'll pass on Tokyo DVD; boring.[/b]

That is a very encouraging read.

South America early next year and maybe an album afterwards.

Clearly more touring would follow that.

rock’s greatest living cockroach- that was funny!
there are some truths in the letter.
I will be waiting on these new songs and I like it. I will stream it, download it, pass it through my colon.
He instantly lost all credibility saying Keith's solo albums are bad, zero credibility.

The internet has thousands of these "bloggers" sitting in their underwear in their Mom's basements telling us how we should feel about stuff. This guy writes a negative blog (which I'm fine with..it is only his opinion) but his motive is to get attention. The more of us who visit his page add Google hits etc and he gains more exposure. I like the new stuff from Keef and don't care what this cellar dwelling dweeb thinks.

Nice interview with the New York Times yesterday. Keith mentions the possibility of doing some Winos shows and a South American tour next February and March.

Sorry if posted already...but this just came up on my Keith newsfeed:

http://www.ew.com/article/2015/08/31/keith-richards-solo-album-interview

How much material did Keith Richards have ready before he started to record his new album, Crosseyed Heart (out Sept. 18)? “How about zero!” cackles the Rolling Stones guitarist, down the phone. “But that’s the fun of recording, especially if you’re recording the way that we made this, with just Steve Jordan on drums and me on guitar, to start with. So, you can just fly anything around the room and, if it didn’t work, it didn’t work, and every now and again we’d hit on something and say, ‘Oh, that’s what we’re looking for. It was a barrel of fun actually. It is a bit of a mixture. I realized when I finished it that I was really tipping my hat [to] everybody I’d learned everything from. There’s Robert Johnson, and Gregory Isaacs, Lead Belly, and Otis Redding. That’s what I wanted to do, I wanted to make an album that—well, actually it didn’t start out as an album. I just went in to cut a few tracks. But it just kept growing!”

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: The album starts with a solo acoustic track called “Crosseyed Lover.” But the song is not actually finished—as you say at the end, “That’s all I’ve got.” What’s the story?
KEITH RICHARDS: Well, we could have either faded the track out or just left it to the very end where I say, “Well, that’s all I got.” We thought that was a good catch to get into the next track. The blues is all I got, really. [Laughs]

Norah Jones sings on the track, “Illusion.” What was it like working with her?
Great. What a beautiful lady. We had the track with just me and I liked the song but this is one of those songs occasionally I write where I need the female side of the story. We called up Norah, and she loved the song, and wrote her part, and just beautifully slotted in. It’s not often that you say, “Oh, it’s a duet.” But “Gimme Shelter”? We had Merry Clayton there. It was obvious it needed a woman. There are certain songs where you feel that, without the female side of the story, you’re only getting half the story. [Laughs]

The sadly late Bobby Keys plays saxophone on the album. What do you remember about recording those tracks with him?
Oh, man. Bob just comes and he’s ready to rock. The man was larger than Texas and that’s saying something. Of course, we had no idea that this would be his last recordings. God, I miss that man. He was a damn good friend and a brilliant sax player. He’d been with me most of my working life. I’m still pretending he’s alive. But I know he ain’t. I miss him sorely, yeah.

How did you come to sing “Goodnight Irene” on the album? It’s not a song I would necessarily think would be something you would perform.
No, I know. It was not necessary that I thought that either. [Laughs] It came about in such a fashion that I could not deny it. Tom Waits had sent me a book on Lead Belly. It had just arrived, and it was sitting on the table, and that same day my guitar man, Pierre, he came by with a 12-string guitar. And so I’m looking at the cover of this Lead Belly [book] and I’ve got this 12-string in my hand. I sort of went, Tom, I can take a hint. It suddenly seemed to me that I had to do “Goodnight Irene.” And also, I’d always wanted to do one of those classic Ameican folk songs, that everybody knows. Usually, “…Irene” is bastardized and smoothed over and stuff. I found the original Lead Belly lyrics, which are a bit raunchier than most, and I thought, I gotta get on this, man. It was as if I was told to do it.

It’s been 23 years since you released your last solo album, Main Offender. What took you so long?
Man, I only do it when the Stones go into hibernation. Unfortunately, as I was recording this and had just finished it, the Stones came out of hibernation. [Laughs] I had it sort of sitting back there for a couple of years, waiting for the right time. Why should I clash with myself, you know? It was looking for the right spot and the right time. Because, when the Stones work, you know, hey, that’s my numero uno! [Laughs]

You’re also the subject of a new Netflix documentary called Keith Richards: Under the Influence (released Sept. 18). What was making that like?
It’s quite interesting. Morgan Neville (Twenty Feet From Stardom) who directed it, is quite incredible. He actually shot it all around me without me being aware that it was happening. I was like, “Cool.” Because I’m working on the road with the Stones. But he had a great way of not interfering. To me, it was as big a surprise as to anybody. But it’s pretty damned good. He’s done a great job. Buddy Guy, and some [other] cats, and a few things are explained. And I’m great!

A lot of documentaries have been made about the Stones over the years. Do you have a favorite?
Charlie is My Darling (1966). This was shot on the cuff but I’ve always found that very amusing. Also, C–ksucker Blues (1972) wasn’t bad. [Laughs]

Well, it was bad in some ways, if you take my meaning.
Yeah. It was as bad as it could get, actually!

There was recently some talk about a new Stones album. What’s the situation with that?
I’m trying to get the Stones into the studio. But I don’t quite honestly see it happen this year.
After we do South America in February and March
,
I’d love to get in the studio in April.
But I know what those guys are like. When they finish a tour, they don’t want to do nothing! [Laughs]

The reference to 'the Stash no longer matters' sounds as if it might be a likely nod to the object of his derision on this one.

Nice song. Good pedal steel.

There's something about the way Keith sings ballads these days where you can kind of tell he's wearing false teeth.

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards calls Metallica and Black Sabbath 'great jokes,' says rap is for 'tone-deaf people' in free-wheeling interview

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Thursday, September 3, 2015, 8:00

Some say rock is dead. For Keith Richards, it always has been.

Strange, coming from the architect of the world’s greatest rock ’n’ roll band.

“It sounds like a dull thud to me,” says the Rolling Stone. “For most bands, getting the syncopation is beyond them. It’s endless thudding away, with no bounce, no lift, no syncopation.”

He has even less regard for heavy metal. “Millions are in love with Metallica and Black Sabbath,” Richards says. “I just thought they were great jokes.”

Not that he’s about to jump on the hip-hop bandwagon either.

“Rap — so many words, so little said,” laughs Richards, 71.

“What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there,” he says. “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.”

If speeches like this aren’t likely to win friends or influence people, they’re ideally suited to a guy who has built a peerless career answering to no one but himself.

Speaking to the Daily News in his manager’s downtown Manhattan office, Richards comes off as both a take-no-prisoners critic and a born charmer. He follows every put-down with a wink. (Stay tuned for barbs about The Beatles, Mick Jagger and narcissistic lead guitarists.) Clearly, Richards is a man with a lot to say about music, as well as a burning desire to make more of it himself.

The icon admits to his frustration with the Rolling Stones’ long absence from the studio. Ten years have elapsed since their last studio work, “A Bigger Bang.” And that’s only made Richards more excited to finally get new music out, via a solo album, coming Sept. 18, titled “Crosseyed Heart.”

It’s Richards first solo work in 23 years, though he fully admits he’d rather it be under the Stones banner. “I had no intention of making solo albums,” Richards says. “I always thought, ‘I’m a Stones man. None shall leave!’ At the same time, we had years of spare time and I wanted to work.”

Richards had been tinkering away at the new album, in between lucrative Stones tours, for more than four years now. He says the initial push came from drummer Steve Jordan, with whom Richards created his two previous solo albums, in ’88 and ’92. The two began co-writing material and, over time, the guitarist says, “the damn thing started to blossom under me.”

To flesh it out, Richards went about reassembling the band that cut his other two solo works, the X-Pensive Winos. “We all gravitated together and I realized I had the potential for the other ‘best rock ’n’ roll band in the world,’” Richards says.

At the same time, he calls the Stones “my baby.” He refers to that band’s inner workings as a “painful democracy,” marked by what he admits are ongoing tensions with frontman Mick Jagger.

Richards wrote about some of them in his acclaimed, 2010 autobiography “Life.” In it, he painted Jagger as something of a snob. “He can come off that way even to me and the rest of the band,” Richards says. “He comes on the plane and doesn’t say, ‘Hey mate.’

“He’s preoccupied with something really boring,” he adds. “He's a control freak. He lost himself a bit in the details.”

Richards’ love of lobbing barbs reared its head recently when he called The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper” album “a mish-mash of rubbish.”

Richards’ riffs are unmistakable and he often stresses the spaces between the notes.  Richards, r., with the rest of the Rolling Stones; he says a lot of current rock lacks syncopation.

He tells The News he wasn’t impressed with another Fab Four milestone — their historic 1965 gig at Shea Stadium. “As a band, they weren’t in sync with each other,” Richards says.

In fact, Richards moved on from his Beatles fandom a long time ago. “When it got to (seeing the guru) Maharishi (in ’67), I gave up,” he says with a cackle.

The candor Richards first established in “Life” made the book so popular it set off a trend in publishers signing every rock star alive to pen their stories. Its blockbuster success took Richards by surprise. “I got the Norman Mailer Award for Christ’s sake,” he says. “I mean, I’m a guitar player!”

In the tome, Richards both reveled in his seminal bad-boy image, and gave it fairer context. Despite his image as Decadence Incarnate, he’s been married to the same woman for three decades, has five grandchildren and, last year, wrote a children’s book.

“I can drag that image around — the Keith with a bottle of bourbon in one hand and a joint in the other,” Richards says. “It’s a ball and chain. At the same time, I take it as a privilege to be taken into people’s hearts and minds. I feel like I’m doing all these things that they can’t do in a 9 to 5 job. In a way they’re saying, ‘Go ahead, Keith.’ They’re giving me license...and I’ve taken full use of it.”

Not that he goes that far with it these days. Drug-wise, all Richards does regularly is smoke pot. When asked about it, he quickly says, “Would you like some?”

Richards calls pot “just fun. And I’m glad to see the rest of the country is coming around to my way of seeing things.”

The world will also likely come to embrace the charms of “Crosseyed Heart.” It contains some classic Stones-like riff-fests, like the single “Trouble,” along with a range of songs that reiterate Richards’ love of blues, country and soul. Yet the core sound of the disc — that unmistakable “Keith Richards” riff — remains. His swinging, syncopated series of swipes and fingerings remains one of the most recognizable, imitated, and thrilling sounds in modern music.

Richards credits its creation to the phase where he, and Stones drummer Charlie Watts started “to find the spaces between each other. This is a cliché, but it’s what you don’t play. You want to leave a little space here and there.”

“That’s the problem with most guitar players. They can’t shut up. They’re playing fantastic stuff but if you don’t give it some room, you’re not going to appreciate it. It becomes a ‘me-me’ ego.”

The M.O. of the Stones counters that. It’s essentially a band with two rhythm guitarists (Richards and Ron Wood), bouncing off Watts’ drums to create something alive in the moment. That wily frisson explains why, in their sustaining live shows, the Stones have been able to beat life into songs more than 40 years old. Richards’ sensitivity to the dynamics of his bandmates makes a sharp contrast to his cranky bluster about the wide swath of music he doesn’t admire. In fact, by keeping his band’s sound alive for 50 years, Richards has proven himself remarkably adaptable and open.

“If you’re in a band, you have to sublimate yourself to each other,” he says. “What’s the point of being in a band when you want to be numero uno? It’s got nothing to do with flash — and all to do with keeping the pulse going.”

Wow, Love Overdue is SWEET.   Keith has that reggae stuff down. I always thought YDHTMI was a real gem of the Babylonian era, and this is akin to it. Reminds me of the Max Romeo album Keith produced in the 70s.

I think Steve Jordan's job has been to cut out all of the "BAY-bee"s that Keef usually sprinkles throughout his vocal performances.

Looking forward to this record and hope it ups the ante for the Stones to cough up a late-inning masterpiece. To mix a few metaphors.

Boy Keith has pulled out all the stops for this new release. I like what I've heard so far...Trouble keeps bouncing around in my head. Hope this gets some airplay...but the buzz may die quickly as Taylor Swifts new turd lands on the scene.

Keith Richards Bashes the Grateful Dead: ‘Boring S—, Man’

By Nick DeRiso September 10, 2015

...
Jason Merritt, Getty Images / Warner Bros.

They may have been two of the summer’s hottest tickets, but the Rolling Stones‘ Keith Richards is no Deadhead. “The Grateful Dead is where everybody got it wrong,” Richards tells Billboard. “Just poodling about for hours and hours. Jerry Garcia, boring s—, man. Sorry, Jerry.”

Richards is coming off a well-received 15-city North American tour with the Stones, while the reunited Grateful Dead pulled in millions with a handful of shows they called Fare Thee Well – their first without Garcia, who died in 1995.

Up next is the release of Richards’ third solo album on Sept. 18. He says the low-key, groove-focused approach on Crosseyed Heart is one he’d like to see the Rolling Stones take on their next studio project. Instead of walking “in with nothing and ask[ing] [drummer] Charlie [Watts] to set up a beat,” Richards noted, Mick Jagger too often wants the Stones “to sound like what he heard in the club last night.”

In the meantime, Richards will play smaller gigs in support of Crosseyed Heart this fall, and then rejoin the Stones for South American dates in 2016. He’ll be doing them mostly – but not entirely – drug-free. It’s been decades since he kicked his now-legendary heroin and coke habits. But it’s not like he’s taken up a monk’s existence.

Richards conducted his Billboard interview with a drink in hand (described as “a midday cocktail of Campari and soda with a double shot of vodka”), and he still takes the occasional toke. “Eh, I love my pot,” Richards said. “Love my weed. Unashamedly a fan. A piece of good hashish now and again. But otherwise …”

I get the impression this interview was done several weeks ago. The end of the Stones tour and the Dead 'Fare Thee Well' shows were hot topics (both ended early/mid July), there's no mention of any of the songs from his new album or the Netflix special (both of which were confirmed early-mid August) and he's talking about a 'fall tour (its now mid-September and theres not even a sniff of any shows). Any recent interviews he's been at best guarded when it comes to possible Winos gigs.

Keith Richards Is a Music Nerd in Rock Star Clothing

SEPTEMBER 15, 2015 5:38 PM
by JULIA FELSENTHAL
...
Photo: Courtesy of Netflix

When Rolling Stones guitarist and forever bad boy Keith Richards released his doorstopper of a memoir, Life, in late 2010, critics and fans alike rejoiced. In the New York Times, Michiko Kakutani gushed, calling it at turns “electrifying,” “high def,” “intimate,” and “moving.”

“Die-hard Stones fans, of course, will pore over the detailed discussions of how songs like ‘Ruby Tuesday’ and ‘Gimme Shelter’ came to be written, the birthing process of some of Mr. Richards’s classic guitar riffs, and the collaborative dynamic between him and Mr. Jagger,” Kakutani wrote. “But the book will also dazzle the uninitiated, who thought they had only a casual interest in the Stones.”

The same cannot quite be said for Morgan Neville’s new Netflix documentary, Keith Richards: Under the Influence, available to stream on Friday. Neville is not at all concerned with the more salacious parts of Richards’s story. His subject is not Keith the carouser, the drug addict, the Lothario. He doesn’t care about the lifelong frenemy-ship between Keith and Mick Jagger. He doesn’t even really care about Keith the rock star. Instead, he’d like us to meet Keith Richards the music nerd.

Early on in the film, Richards tells the camera, “I ain’t a pop star no more. And I don’t wanna be!” Neville’s mission, it feels, is to remind us that Richards is a serious student of music, and one of its most gifted practitioners. As Tom Waits says: “He’s like a London cabbie who has the knowledge. He has that in music.” As the opening scenes illustrate: Give Richards some vinyl, a cigarette, and three fingers of booze and you’ve got yourself a happy man.

Though linear biography doesn’t much factor into Neville’s film, we do learn about Richards’s musical education: his mother, a “beautiful music freak” with a knack for finding the best thing on the radio at any given moment; his grandfather, who left guitars lying around in hopes that they would catch Richards’s eye and primed his fingers for blues licks by forcing him to master Spanish malagueña exercises. Richards and Jagger, we’re reminded, formed the Stones after encountering each other on the train to art school; Richards noticed Jagger because Jagger had a Chuck Berry album tucked under his arm. Later, Jagger shared a Muddy Waters record with Richards and blew his young mind.

...
Photo: Courtesy of Netflix

Mostly, though, we see present-day Richards messing around on the guitar, bass, and piano in the studio in New York City with his producer and drummer Steve Jordan and a few other lucky musicians as they lay down tracks for Crosseyed Heart, Richards’s first solo album in 23 years, which also drops on Friday. We see him traveling to Chicago to shoot pool and drink corn whiskey with Buddy Guy, with whom he reminisces about iconic Chicago bluesmen like Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. He visits Waters’s red-brick row house and remembers a night when he basically got too blitzed to remember much. (He does recall falling asleep at Waters’s house and waking up at Howlin’ Wolf’s.) We follow him to Nashville to visit the Ryman Auditorium, home of the Grand Ole Opry until 1974, so he can opine about Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Gram Parsons, and pay homage to their hard-partying ways. (“The reality of country music on the road is something. Rock ’n’ roll has nothing on those guys!”)

The nearest Neville goes toward general audience-pandering is when he splices in archival footage: the young, mop-topped Stones cavorting poolside; in the studio trying to find the right tempo for “Sympathy for the Devil”; Richards bouncing around a living room shirtless in Jamaica. But the director gives equal attention to topics that only gearheads and Stones superfans will appreciate: a tour, say, of Richards’s impressive guitar collection by his tech, Pierre De Beauport, or a description of how Richards used a tape machine as a pickup to electrify and distort the acoustic guitar on “Street Fighting Man.”

Influence never feels totally comfortable in its documentary skin. As an entry into that genre, it’s got nothing on Neville’s last film, his Oscar-winning look at the world of backup singers, 20 Feet From Stardom. Perhaps that’s because the Richards doc, as Billboard reported, began as a promotional piece for Richards’s new album. Neville, in fact, described the film to Billboard as “a scrapbook. . . . This is essentially what it would be like to hang out with Keith and talk about music and life. It’s not a tightly knit story. It’s not a novel.” It also may be that Neville had to skirt territory claimed by another Keith Richards documentary: Johnny Depp’s long-in-development, tentatively titled Happy.

In 20 Feet, the singers’ ambivalence between hanging back and aspiring to the spotlight creates driving narrative tension; Influence doesn’t even dabble in that kind of drama. (It’s worth noting that Mick Jagger, the most notorious and historical source of angst in Richards’s life, appears on camera in 20 Feet but not in Influence.) If you believe the film, life in Keith Richards land these days is pretty damn good. It’s too bad, in fact, that the name Happy may already be taken; it would have been the perfect title for Neville’s film. If you can find no other reason to stream Influence, do it to experience a full catalog of the many ways Keith Richards can laugh. Every anecdote he tells ends with a chortle, a giggle, a sheepish little chuckle. Richards’s voice has an Austin Powers–ish tendency to crumble off and up at the end of each sentence, a little trailing vocal curlicue. If a voice can smile, Keith Richards’s voice is grinning. Appropriately, one of the last shots of the film shows Richards and his wife, Patti Hansen, lounging on expensive-looking lawn furniture, prodding each other playfully, and throwing their heads back in laughter. The very un-rock ’n’ roll subtext? Happy wife. Happy life. “I’ve been blessed,” Richards admits as he plucks away at a ukulele, his skull ring on proud display, his fingers gnarled.

Approach Influence as a documentary and you may be disappointed; approach it as an opportunity to take a dopamine bath in Keith Richards’s brain and it’s practically guaranteed to leave you smiling.

I just received an email from the KeithRichards.com store stating that the CD and shirt shipped, but they are sending it 7-10 day delivery.

The vinyl record is on backorder, as is the guitar pick set.

What a load of horseshit.

To be honest, I wish he had left on the lyrics. I miss the days when you had to decipher them. It was part of the mystique.

Under The Influence is now streaming on Netflix. Watching now. So far, it's excellent.

You rock!

Now I've watched the whole thing. It's very good. I usually judge these type of things by the simple test of if I'd  watch it again. I'll absolutely watch this again. It's great.

What's up with the reporter asking about Black Lives Matter? He completely blew that question off, as well as the very first one about his relationship with Mick.

Keith Richards: ‘You don’t stop growing until they shovel the dirt in’

At 71, the Rolling Stones legend is proud of his cartoon image as a rock outlaw. He’s back now with his first solo album in 23 years. But some days, the wildman reputation feels like a ball and chain – he just wants to visit an art gallery or water the garden

...

A lot of people say I shouldn’t be here’ … Keith Richards. Photograph: Mark Seliger
Alexis Petridis

There are few things in life that make you feel more pathetic than smoking an e-cigarette in front of Keith Richards. I know this because I’m puffing on one when he sways into his suite at the Savoy in central London, looking, I’m delighted to report, like a caricature of Keith Richards come to life. Smouldering Marlboro in one hand, glass in the other, shirt open, tight black jeans encasing legs so skinny you wonder how they support the rest of him, slight though the rest of him is. For all that people go on about the wrinkles on his face, Richards’ physique is a walking advert for the benefits of a diet he claims is largely composed of “meat and potatoes”, vodka and orange, and nicotine: “No, I don’t work out. No, no, no. I mean, I pick up those things” – he mimes lifting a dumbbell – “and go: ‘God, that’s too heavy.’ Then put them down.”

He shakes hands – his fingers are gnarled with arthritis that he insists doesn’t affect his guitar playing and causes him “absolutely no pain at all … I think it came as a result of hitting things, including my guitar.” And then he looks at my vaping device, and his face clouds with bemusement. “Yeah … Ronnie Wood uses one of those,” he says slowly, in a tone of perplexed horror: you would think he was telling me that Wood wipes his bum with his bare hands. “I’ve tried it,” he adds, pulling a face. It didn’t work for him? “Well, I learned that I clearly don’t smoke cigarettes just because of some kind of … oral fixation,” he laughs.

A lot of journalists have expended a lot of energy trying to convey the extraordinary sound of Richards’ laugh. The internationally accepted onomatopoeic representation seems to be either “huargh huargh huargh” or “wurgh wurgh wurgh”, but neither really captures its full, wheezing, gurgling splendour: the most lyrical attempt might be Caitlin Moran’s suggestion that, when amused, the septuagenarian Rolling Stones guitarist makes a noise that sounds like “a crow stuck up a chimney”. Whatever it sounds like, you hear it a great deal. Almost everything Richards says seems to come accompanied by laughter, but nothing makes him laugh harder than the subject of his announcement that he was going to retire. This apparently happened four years ago: it’s mentioned, almost in passing, by Steve Jordan, the producer of his new solo album, Crosseyed Heart, during Under the Influence, a Netflix documentary made to accompany the album’s release. “Well, I don’t know, I did feel at a bit of a loose end at the end of the whole thing of writing and PRing Life [his autobiography], which was probably 2011,” he says. “I thought, ‘Oh, write a book,’ you know, tell a few stories. I didn’t realise that by the time you come out the other end you feel like you’ve lived your whole life twice. And for my life, that’s pretty tiring and a bit confusing. And also, there was no sign of the Stones coming out of hibernation. So I threw out that statement, it was only once that I said it, just to see the reaction it got, really just to punch the Stones in the back of the head. Oh, I’ll use every ploy in the …” he starts to say, but the rest of the phrase is consumed by laughter.

The first person to take the bait was Jordan, the drummer on both Richards’ previous solo albums, 1988’s Talk is Cheap and 1992’s Main Offender. He suggested the pair go into the studio together to “kick some stuff around” in the way Richards and Charlie Watts used to in the 60s and early 70s, a style of working that produced Jumping Jack Flash, Street Fighting Man and Happy. Crosseyed Heart was the unexpected result. “And then, funnily enough, within a few months, the Stones want to get back on the road again! Yeah, disguised as a 50-year anniversary! So it did its kick. I mean, I really hate to tell lies, but that was one of them.”

Galvanised by Richards’ threat to pension himself off, the Rolling Stones are apparently due to go back into the studio soon to make another album, their first in a decade: “They need to, it’s been too long.” In the interim, he seems to be having a high old time promoting Crosseyed Heart: throughout the summer, he has kept news pages busy giving interviews in which he expressed some fairly robust opinions about Mick Jagger (“such a snob”), Bill Wyman (“a funny old fucker”), hip-hop (“so many words, so little said”), heavy metal (“a great joke”) and the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper (“a load of shit”). Meeting him in person, you do find yourself wondering how many of these pronouncements arrived accompanied by a gale of wheezy laughter that suggested Richards might not be talking in deadly earnest; either way, he is clearly in more conciliatory mood today. He starts telling me about a magazine award he picked up earlier in the week – “for being a legend or an icon or an iPad or something” – opining that such things are “all pointless and redundant”, before correcting himself: “Genuinely, I was very touched.” He is still adamant that most rock bands can’t play properly – “they’ve got that sort of European way of looking at rhythm and usually it’s Prussian, it’s like a march” – and he isn’t terribly enamoured of “damn synthesisers and people playing a drumbeat with their fingers”, but nor is he quite as dismissive of modern music as he sometimes appears: “I’m interested in what people think is progress.”

He says making solo albums gives him a greater understanding of “the perils and difficulties of being a frontman” and how good Jagger is at it, “although it’s sometimes hard to pay Mick a compliment. I don’t know if it’s reticence or whatever, but if you say: ‘Mick, that was fantastic’, it’s: [he adopts a diffident voice] ‘Oh, thanks mate.’” And he is keen to underline that the point he was trying to make about Sgt Pepper was that the Stones’ response, 1967’s Their Satanic Majesties Request, was “far worse”, the era of love and peace not really suiting the Rolling Stones. “God, that year, 1967, the effect of LSD on people’s music and lives. People dropping out and going to India! And the Maharishi …” – his voice trails off and his face forms itself into an expression that suggests Richards ranks the founder of Transcendental Meditation right up there with the inventor of e-cigarettes. “I just saw people losing their thread. That year, we all went off the tracks. It was a kind of mad vacation. When we made Beggars Banquet the next year, I felt like: ‘OK, hols are over, old boy, let’s get back to business.’”

He seems touchingly proud of Crosseyed Heart, despite his continued insistence that he has no interest in being a solo artist: “My whole thing has always been a band, that I’ve got this incredible band that have obviously proved through the years they can hop generations, and, you know, I kind of think that’s enough for one man to ask for and I only do solo stuff when there’s nothing on the horizon, basically, to keep my hand in.”

Nevertheless, Crosseyed Heart is warm and relaxed and possessed of a ramshackle charm noticeably absent from the last Stones album, 2005’s A Bigger Bang: it offers covers of Leadbelly and Gregory Isaacs, and his own Nothing On Me, on which Richards defiantly ruminates about the 1977 Toronto drug bust, for which he narrowly escaped a prison sentence. “It took me a while to realise how much the cops cropped up on this record, on Nothing On Me and Robbed Blind. Then I put it down to the fact that they’d played quite a large part in my life. And, you know,” – he lowers his voice to a mock-conspiratorial murmur – “they did give me quite a bother. They were trying to do me in the early 60s, before there was anything to do me for. I don’t know if I shone out on the street, or trying to creep around the corner. And then later, the Chelsea police force … I’m only happy to say that the guys that did all of that ended up in jail. But it does sort of give you another way of looking at life, when the first thing you do in the morning is look out of the window and go: ‘Yeah, the unmarked car’s there.’ For Christ’s sake, you know what I mean.” Another laugh. “Now, of course, they work for me. I’ve got detectives in New York who take care of me. I suppose it’s the amount of time that’s gone by, and also I think probably because all of their attempts to put me away always ended up in disaster for them. I mean, how many lessons do you need?”

Of course, having “quite a bother” with the police is part of the romantic and enduring myth of Richards as a kind of permanently dissipated musical outlaw and bete noire of polite society, the knife-carrying “living embodiment of rock’n’roll” as one profile breathlessly put it. It is an image that has served him well over the years, inspiring countless guitar-slinging imitators and Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow alike. But at 71, and not so much a bete noire of polite society as a beloved national treasure (“Am I? I think that’s just a matter of hanging around long enough, you know”), he claims to be tiring of it a little. In Under the Influence, he claims his public image is “a ball and chain”, which feels a bit ironic given that the documentary’s very title plays on it. “What? ‘Keef’? With the bottle of bourbon in one hand and a joint in the other? You do drag it around with you. In a way, I’m flattered that old Keef’s become that sort of cartoon figure. I guess what I mean is that when I meet people in an art gallery and I’m talking about Caravaggio with them, they go: ‘Oh, we thought you’d be different.’ Then it feels like a ball and chain.”

Was it an image he deliberately cultivated? “I didn’t mean to. I suppose unwittingly.”

Oh, come off it. In his autobiography, he said he once cleared a hotel room of unwanted guests by getting a gun out and firing it through the floor.

“Well, yeah.” Another laugh, this time a bit sheepish. “In that respect, I see what you mean. Let’s say I didn’t do anything to prevent it. And I suppose it does come in handy every now and again when, whatever the situation is, Keef’s here and there’s already a sense of intimidation or something. But the hotel room … it was one of those days.” He shrugs. “I mean, what do you do when people won’t listen to you? I also knew that the room below was empty,” he adds, lest anyone think that by shooting a gun in a hotel room full of people he was behaving recklessly.

Indeed, so pervasive is Richards’ image that it’s still hard to imagine him doing anything vaguely normal. So what does he do at home, when he’s not being Keef? “I watch the wife garden. She loves to prune things sometimes, and I sort of sit there and go: ‘Oh, you missed a bit.’ I might get the hose out, do a bit of watering. God, I just do what any other old bloke does. I make sure the dogs are fed, I try to live as normally as possible. Actually, I love my old lady, and she can make me do anything. And, hopefully, I’m a pretty good grandad, because they also seem to like me. Fascinating to watch the grandkids, because there’s five of them and they’re all various ages: the oldest is 19, the youngest is two. And so far, they like me. I don’t bribe them. I mean, every grandad has to be indulgent, right, up to a point. But it’s not like ‘Grandad’s arriving’, like I’m Father Christmas or something. I feel privileged, really. I mean, a lot of people say I shouldn’t be here, but I am, and I’m trying to be as good a grandad as mine was to me.”

Yes, he says, he still has ambitions: he would like to make at least one more Stones album, for one thing. “And apart from that, I’d like to live another 25 years or something. I could handle that. I mean, I’m blessed with being sort of physically robust. And what you realise when you get older is, you never stop growing up. You can let other people think you’re grown up, with all this wisdom – ‘Yes, that’s right, my son’ – but, you know, that’s only because they’re younger than you, so you can lay that on them.” Yet another laugh. “Obviously, I have got a bit wiser, I’ve learned a bit more about … pacing myself. But other than that, I don’t think you stop growing until they start shovelling the dirt in.”

Crosseyed Heart is released on Virgin/EMI.

A strange, strange album.

The packaging contains many mistakes - misspellings, incorrect dates, grammatical errors and putting lyrics from one song under another.

The music?

Not what I expected. Lots of ballads, mid-tempo sad songs and talking.

Ah...a second listen on a different rig with the effects of a few drinks. It's a mellow record. If Talk is Cheap rocks like a Friday night, and Main Offender is a late Saturday night feel, Crosseyed Heart is Sunday.

Substantial Damage is the Winos wailing away on a wild, youthful groove. I really like it.

He appeared on a late night TV show on the day that his new album came out for a chat? With no live performance? How disappointing.

Keith Richards: Under the Influence review: 'Shows the myth, not the man'

...
KEITH RICHARDS AT THE TORONTO FILM FESTIVAL PREMIERE OF 'UNDER THE INFLUENCE' CREDIT: EPA/WARREN TODA

Ed Power
18 SEPTEMBER 2015 • 6:58PM
Keith Richards is one of rock'n'roll's great mythological beasts – a snaggletoothed outlaw with a lock-up-your-drinks-cabinet leer and an endless supply of amazing Technicolor bandanas. But peel back the wattles and might there be more to the Rolling Stones icon than meets the eye?

It's a fascinating question, and one that Keith Richards: Under The Influence, a new documentary on Netflix, seems only vaguely interested in answering. The film's big goosebumps moment comes when Richards is asked to reflect on his reputation as rock's ultimate ruffian. Suddenly he drops the rakish grin he has dutifully paraded for director Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom, Johnny Cash's America) and speaks from the heart.

"To 99.9 per cent of people, it's Keith Richards smoking a joint, a bottle of Jack Daniels in his hand, walking down the road, cursing the fact that the liquor store is closed," he says. "Image is like a ball and chain… when the sun goes down it doesn't disappear."

...
Keith Richards
CREDIT: MJ KIM
This is an deeply humane and fascinating insight and Neville deserves kudos for coaxing the guitarist into stepping beyond the persona he has inhabited for the past half-century. Alas, it is also one of the few genuine nuggets in a feature happier to celebrate the hoary myths that surround Richards than to delve into the more complex reality.

Framed in moody blues and grays, the film – which coincides with a new Richards solo LP – unspools in endless, stereotype-heavy montages. We see Richards staring from car windows or backstage in random venues across the American South, delivering croaking yarns about run-ins with Chuck Berry and redneck cops. Personal reversals, such as his estrangement from his father and tensions with Mick Jagger, are touched on in frustratingly fleeting fashion.

"That was actually World War Three," Richards recalls of a sticky patch in the late Eighties, when a Mick-Keith schism threatened the future of The Rolling Stones. "In a 50-year relationship doing this stuff of course guys have fights. Brothers have fights. We're brothers. "

You want to know more. However, the director appears oddly uninterested in Richards's travails, and we're soon back to clichéd footage of Keef larking about in the studio, the camera lingering on his crocodile shoe complexion. For all Neville's undoubted slickness and poise as a filmmaker, Under The Influence displays a fundamental lack of curiosity about the cackling enigma at its heart.

Oh great - yet another film portraying Richards as Keef the Pirate.

If you haven't seen this long interview from '89, it's one of his best, and he's actually coherent and thoughtful and comes off as a semi-normal human being.

I enjoyed Under The Influence.  Some of the stories we have all heard before.  Many of the home movie shots I had never seen and I thought they were a nice touch.

The studio shots were interesting.  I loved listening to them jam.  And the acoustic version of Trouble was very nice.

Nobody bothered watching Keith on Jimmy Fallon last night?

He appeared on a late night TV show on the day that his new album came out for a chat? With no live performance? How disappointing.

Here's the video of the show. Cant see it myself as its only for US viewers

http://www.nbc.com/the-tonight-show/video/keith-richards-emma-roberts-nate-barga...

When was the last time him or the band did a live performance to promote something. They don't strap it on for less than 5 Mill.  War horses couldn't drag me away Waka Jawaka

Wrong...they did it for Rolling Stones week on Fallon's old Late Show not too long ago.  Repeatedly, if memory serves.

The Rolling Stones did not do a live performance on Fallon.

I think the most recent live  televised performance was at the 12-12 concert.

What's wrong with purchasing the music?

This isn't about buying the album, it's Netflix viewing out of region…
and if you want to watch Netflix USA and don't live here, buy a Netflix USA subscription and use a VPN service that will make you look like you're in the USA...

The documentary was really great I though. It was nearly all about the music, and Keith is playing so well in those jams.

She's talking about 'Under The Influence' - which isn't commercially available.

I just fucking love this record. There really isnt one shitty song on it. You pick up nuances every time you listen to it. Its pure magic.  To me this album has the best flow of any Stones or stones related project since TATTOO,  I think its really special.

I love it as well.....Something For Nothing is amazing...Illusion with Nora Jones should be a single......would get a lot of airplay I think. When I burned to CD I changed up the song order opened with Trouble...then Something...then the Reggae number followed by Amnesia...like my playlist so far!
