I have some terrible news regarding my son. Help, prayers and suggestions are needed.

My oldest boy (11) told me in the car the other day that he likes country music. "Sure," I chimed in. "Country music is a staple of America," I happily told him, bringing up names like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Sr, Flying Burrito Bros, amongst many others.

"No way - I don't want to listen to your crappy bands. I want a CD with that song 'This Is How We Roll'".

Immediately I rushed home and called up the song on the interweb. The sound poured out of my speakers and into my ears like the feeling of hearing a thousand fingernails on a thousand chalkboards while chewing a wad of tin foil and pulling a popsicle stick through my teeth, all at the same time. I immediately had to pop in Exile to wash the dirty feeling out of my ears. But it still won't go away!

So I am turning to you all - what is a poor father to do when he comes home to find his beloved child listening to the local modern country station? How should I feel when I get into the car to find that country station programmed into my dial, blasting at a high volume? If I enforce a no ShitCountry rule in the house, it will only drive the boy away more and make him love the modern Nashville sound - but if I do nothing, perhaps he will never understand or discover for himself the cleansing power of rock n roll.

What can a poor boy do???

I will try to play this for him tomorrow.

#2 Kick the shit outta him and say he's listening to fag music (and if in rebellion, he listens even more to ShitCountry, spread a rumor in his high school he's a fag).
#3 Trick him into drinking moonshine and then put him to listen to Mr. Cash
#4 Trick him into eatng peyotes and then do he rest as explained on #3

If your kids are talking to you....it's all good regardless of what they say....When they go silent there's trouble ahead.

If your son doesn't like to listen to your favorite bands, it's understanable. I have no kids; I have a nephew who recently said to me something like: "at least I listen to NEW things".

[I wanted to kill his stupid looking headphones. I didn't.]

On his behalf, that kid is 18 years old. I remember being one. Besides, adults can be assholes too.One of my teachers was an incredible asshole; she kicked me out of the class [while I was nine or ten years old]. I can't even remember her name. She even made fun of me, when I was nine years old,while I was crying about I don't know what. [I'm writing about the time when 'bullying' wasn't a common word.]

I hated school. The only good thing is that I found some friends.

Anyway, good luck, and just give space to that son of yours. We're all assholes, deep inside.

I watch the show Nashville on the down low.

I have the opposite going on: my oldest daughter (who turns 2 on March 7th; other daughter is 3 months) loves "Brown Sugar" and always asks me to play it ("daddy, bwown shugeh peeeeez").

I'm sure this changes in about 8-10 years
