A two song DVD? Holy shit! I'm trying to come up with a sarcastic reply, but I cant. Unbelievable. When you release stuff like this, it's no wonder why people pirate it.

Kiss my undercover ass LOL

It is incredible. It's almost like whoever planned this were some how mentally delayed, literally retarded.
It's like some (not so)private joke the Stones are playing (i.e. the 'Ya Ya's' box DVD) to see how much they can piss their fan base off. Weird.

Any chance we could borrow Dylan, Springsteen or Elvis' archive people for a few weeks to show the Stones how to do a vaults release in a way that doesn't offer very little for a lot of money?

Shit, any chance the Stones could borrow you for a few weeks to show them how it could be done?

I know you've tried to contact them before mate, but now that their three 'iconic' '70s albums have been given the "deluxe" treatment, maybe someone in Stones Inc. might think it would be interesting to bring in a fresh face to show 'em what they got. I'm serious - prove your bonafides (easy), set up a meeting or even a phone call with Don Was or someone else, maybe just a sound engineer, see what happens. 'Black and Blue', 'Undercover' as a testing ground...

I'm not interested in this box set at all. I have an original release on vinyl and the 94 remaster.

The '94 remaster is the best CD version IMO.

I agree. The 94 disc is my go to version on CD. I ignored the recent reissues due to them getting bad reviews.

Sticky Fingers isn't a summertime stadium party album. Outside of a few tracks, it's not one you'd put on your car stereo on a Saturday night for cruising.

All I want is  anew studio album, but those days are forever over.

Fraid so.

Not sure where they're going to go with the deluxe reissues after this.  The half arsed way theyve dealt with the bonus studio material on this release suggests they're losing interest.

Mick did say when they did Exile that it was a lot of work, and that how much they put into future releases was dependent on how they sold. Exile sold very well, Some Girls less so and this will probably sell even less unless they  manage to take advantage of the tour and market it well.

I cant see there being much mileage in expanded releases of specific albums after this.  Most of the albums that do have a lot of potential bonus material aren't widely regarded as 'classic' Stones albums (Emotional Rescue, Dirty Work, Voodoo Lounge, Goats Head Soup, etc) and the one remaining mega-selling album that they havent touched yet (Tattoo You) was basically a collection of touched up leftovers to begin with.

Maybe the way forward - especially for a band whose studio material tends to overlap albums with songs being carried over to future sessions - is to make these releases more 'era specific' than 'album specific'. Technically, they've already done this with the Exile and Some Girls - but instead in the future they could just be a bit more honest about the sources of the material.

I'm sure they could cobble together a good 2-CD set of alternates and outtakes from the 1968-69 era that saw them release Beggars, Let It Bleed and a couple of killer singles.  Or a couple of discs worth of material from the Paris era of the late 70s and early 80s' (the just circulated third 'Foxes In The Boxes' disc shows what great stuff there is that really is worthy of a wider release)

Sadly, in todays music environment even a new killer tune (per us) would go unnoticed or a commercial yawn anyway.....Time is no longer on their or our sides. But man what a run it was.....

Excellent post Gazza, and right on point.

Though it is a bummer to think there most likely won't be a deluxe Beggars or Let It Bleed.

Yep, a 2-CD from the Beggars and Let It Bleed period
- with the singles included - would make my day.

Gazza the Stones should put you in charge of this project. You put more thought into it than they do themselves, and you know the material probably better as well. Gazzapedia The Rolling Stones factual trivia extroidinaire!

why don't they let an enthusiastic archivist do this work?
would make sense, and there's people who would do it for love and low salary…

Sadly, because (1) they are control freaks, and (2) they don't give a shit anymore.

I seem to recall during the interviews for the Exile deluxe package, Mick saying they got some input from an outsider re: what was and wasn't available on bootlegs. No idea who, though or how much effort was made.

Doubt they'd let a fan or achivist trawl their way through the mountains of session tapes though - although Dylan's people did precisely that when doing the 'Another Self Portrait' Bootleg Series release - the guy, Andre de Reus I think his name was, did a fantastic job too.

Wasn't it Don Was who went through their archives? Didn't he give an interview around the EOMS or SG deluxe releases where he talked about various things he'd come across? Or am I hallucinating again?

he did. He also suggested that the archives were in a real mess with songs from different eras next to each other.

The release is now delayed to June 8th (two weeks later) due to a faulty zipper.

Honestly!
