Next year will be the Stones' fourth year in a row of touring
Something they havent done since the early 70's.
Three more years for another album? Youve already been waiting for almost ten. Whats another three between friends?
They dont have any contractual obligation to make another record and have minimal interest in performing anything that was written after the 70's. At some shows recently the most recent song was "Start Me Up".
I think by now people should get the hint. They dont care about making new music. They can play two concerts and make more money than they'll get from sales of a new album, and they'll do so with a lot less effort.
As mentioned on another thread, Keith - who has been the main writer on barely half a dozen released Rolling Stones songs since 1997 - has spent the last couple of years focussing what songwriting chops he still has on a solo record instead. Anyone remember 30 years back when he was so pissed at Mick channelling so much of his songwriting efforts into his debut solo album that he ended up contributing hardly anything to Dirty Work?
Dont understand your obsession with comparing them to Dylan in each thread. He's still an evolving, living artist who isnt trapped in the past as can be seen by the fact that he rearranges his songs regularly and the majority of the songs he's playing each night were written since 1997.
The Stones are entertainers.
Its not a criticism - it is what it is. They're bloody good at it, but the reality is that its a nostalgia act. Nothing more. Its disappointing that theyve ceased to care about creativity when other acts from the same era and just after it are still making good new records, but its been that way for ages so it looks like we'll have to grin and bear it.
For future 'new' material, it'll probably follow the same template we've had since 2002 (with the exception of Bigger Bang).
Either
1) A couple of hastily recorded new songs tacked on to another greatest hits record
or
2) Mick putting new lyrics and vocals on a few ancient backing tracks and putting them on a bonus disc for some kind of deluxe reissue, whilst trying to convince people that hardly any new writing or overdubbing was needed.
(To answer your question - slightly. The Stones played their 2,000th show in August 2006. They played their 1,000th as far back as 1967. So they played as many gigs in their first five years as they did in the 45 that followed it. The whole 'golden era' with Mick Taylor that people rave about consisted of about 175 shows in total, and the total of concerts throughout the 70s and 80's only make up about 20% of the number of shows they have played as a working band).
They're still performing, and doing it really well. Realistically it's not going to go on for much longer. The last thing we need at this stage is for them to take a couple of years off and then expect them to make a new record and tour with it. Those days are gone. At this stage in their lives, it's going to be little short bursts of touring like we've had for the last two years. And the point of touring has nothing to do with 'promoting' new songs.
