Charlie Watts Performs With Tim Ries And Bernard Fowler In Sydney Club

by PAUL CASHMERE on NOVEMBER 14, 2014

Rolling Stones fans who went along to the Tim Ries sideshow in Sydney last night had a special treat, Charlie Watts sat in on the gig.

On Thursday night Tim Ries, the Rolling Stones sax player since 2003, performed at Sydney’s 505 Club in Cleveland Street to a capacity 150 audience.

Tim, who also recorded jazz versions of Stones songs for his The Rolling Stones Project has Stones back-up singer Bernard Fowler on vocals for his shows and last night the Stones legendary drummer Charlie Watts came along for the gig.

Charlie sat in the audience for the first part of the show and then joined Ries and Fowler to perform a jazz version of the 1981 Stones hit ‘Waiting On A Friend’.

Darryl Jones, the Stones bass player ever since the departure of Bill Wyman, also joined the jazz combo for the evening.

The 505 Club is not used to capacity crowds. The sign on the door said “Sold out. Really”.

Tim Ries has recorded two albums of jazz versions of Stones songs under ‘The Rolling Stones Project’. The first album ‘The Rolling Stones Project’ was released in 2005. The second ‘Stones World: The Rolling Stones Project II’ was released in 2008. The second album featured Tim Ries (alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones, piano), Charlie Watts (drums), Keith Richards (guitar), Mick Jagger (harmonica) and Ronnie Wood (guitar, lap steel).

“What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there,” he says. “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.” - Keef

That's a nice surprise for Charlie to show up for one of these gigs! Very cool for the fans in the audience in such a small place.
