Under Their Thumb (Bill German's book)

If anyone doesn't know, Bill German made the Beggar's Banquet fanzine for many years and then wrote a book about his experiences. Actually, I'm sure everyone here knows that, just giving context. I'm almost finished reading this and I have to say, it's one of the most entertaining Stones books I've read in quite a while. His account of the inner workings of the band during that era is both hilarious and sort of depressing as he explains what happened between the Tattoo You tour and the Steel Wheels tour. Stories of all night hang outs with Keith and Ronnie at home and in the studio, the appearance of a shady guy named Michael Cohl and how he changed the way rock bands tour(that has most likely affected all of us, lol!), being berated by Mick Jagger, etc... There is a lot of stuff about that era that he gives a firsthand account of that most books don't. An interesting read for sure. You rock!

Tough going through life with that moniker, but yes (!) this man can deliver the skeech when it comes to bookwise.  He knows his rock and roll, like no man.

Gee whiz, maybe I should've put "happy Birthday" in the topic title.

Anyway... upon further reflection, I've come to the conclusion that the once great Rocks Off member Sirstonesalot was completely wrong when he proclaimed that the band had become Stones.Inc because they played a money gig for a bank during the Bigger Bang tour. The Steel Wheels tour had already done that years earlier. So much for phony baloney outrage in the internet age.

Had the pleasure of driving Bill to and from one of his appearances in Phoenix a few years back. Very interesting commute! He is a class act and a fellow New Yawker!!
Great to listen to his experiences and share my own with him.

Most books on the Stones tend to fizzle out sometime in the 70s when their cultural impact diminished and the quality of the music started to dip.

As a result, a lot of them tend to cover the same old ground over and over.

Bill's book covers a much less documented and very tumultuous period in the band's career and highlights a shift in the band's ethos from rock n roll band to that of a corporation. I found it fascinating.

Exactly Gazza! That's what I was trying to say. This book was like the missing piece of the puzzle for me, regarding that time frame. I'd consider it essential reading as far as Stones books go.

Well done Mr. German Let's go get drunk

Yes, fascinating and original with a different perspective coming from a real insider and a fan. Definitively one of the best books about the Rolling Stones and the best for that period of time.

Bill... next steps is the movie "Almost famous 2"
