Now, if I can offer an initial plea: Could you please use all the influence at your command to see to it that your new team is not quite the collection of jackholes as was your former team?
Your Seahawks managed two nearly impossible feats Sunday: They lost a Super Bowl throwing an interception from a half-yard out; and they actually made me glad that they did it.
Dear Dan, keep the winning part. Ditch the jerk quotient. That has to be possible; those two characteristics aren’t necessarily married. Certainly the idea of winning with at least a minimum of dignity is not some outdated notion, as quaint as composing a hand-written letter.
It has to be within a coach’s power to instill in his team a personality that thinks scoring a touchdown at a Super Bowl and then performing a scatological endzone celebration is not a good idea.
Yes, Seattle, with its various objectionable acts on the biggest stage, did convert me to a New England supporter by the end of Sunday. And, believe me, that was like turning a vegan into a brisket man.
Don’t know if it was Richard Sherman mocking Darrelle Revis on the sideline after the Pats cornerback was beaten for a touchdown. I’m surprised that guy didn’t try to bump Katy Perry off the stage at halftime so he could spend that part of the game singing his own praises, too.
Don’t know if it was Doug Baldwin scoring in the third quarter, putting the Seahawks up 10, and then squatting over the ball as if he just, well, deposited it there. At the time, all the TV viewer caught was Baldwin beginning to mime dropping his pants. What followed was too tasteless for even NBC to show – and that’s the same network that brought you “My Mother the Car” and the XFL. The details, however, quickly made the online rounds.
Why would anyone mark such a grand moment like a bear marking his territory? “That was between me and the guy it was directed at,” Baldwin said afterward. Well, there were a few million others caught in your crossfire.
Don’t know if it was the little brawl the Seahawks D instigated after that mind-numbing decision not to run noted crotch-grabber Marshawn Lynch at the end.
Whatever, the combined effect was to make the Patriots look like royalty by comparison.
Please, Dan, do insist that a little class is part of the new culture you’ve come here to instill.
