Troy Aikman says the Patriots' punishment should exceed what Saints received for bounty scandal

New Orleans Saints fans might readily agree with former Dallas Cowboys quarterback broadcaster Troy Aikman, who said Thursday about the Patriots' reportedly deflating footballs when compared to the Saints' bounty scandal.

Aikman was on the 1310-AM The Ticket in Dallas and said the Patriots' reported use of deflated footballs should warrant a stiffer penalty than what the Saints received during the bounty scandal. New England Patriots blew out the Indianapolis Colts, 45-7, in the AFC title game to advance to Super Bowl 49.

"Now twice, under Bill Belichick and possibly a third time, they've cheated and given themselves an advantage. ... To me, the punishment for the Patriots and/or Bill Belichick has to be more severe than what the punishment was for the Saints."

Aikman referenced the bounty scandal in which the NFL issued sanctions to the Saints, including a season-long suspension for coach Sean Payton and initially an indefinite ban for defensive coordinator Gregg Williams along with forfeiture of draft picks in 2012.

Aikman added that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady must have known the deflated balls were being used because that doesn't happen "unless the quarterback wants that to happen."

Falcons Official 2014 Ball?

On Wednesday, Saints owner Tom Benson announced a change in plans for who would take over control of the Saints upon his death.

Benson announced his wife Gayle would assume ownership, a change from previous plans to bequeath the team to his daughter Renee LeBlanc, his grandson Ryan LeBlanc and his granddaughter Rita Benson LeBlanc. Benson LeBlanc, whose management style has come under fire in the past, was the presumed successor to her grandfather with the Saints (and the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans) and the three family members passed over are fighting Benson’s decision.

Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that LeBlanc and her children are named as petitioners in a lawsuit filed on Thursday that claims Benson is incompetent to make such decisions after a series of health issues. Per Duncan, the suit, filed in Orleans Parish Civil District Court, brings “numerous claims that Benson is mentally and physically unfit to manage his personal or business affairs.” It also attempts to paint Gayle Benson, who has been married to Tom Benson for 10 years, as a “a gold-digging opportunist” trying to get her hands on the teams and Benson’s other business interests.

The suit asks that Benson’s daughter be appointed as executor of his sports and business holdings with his granddaughter as the secondary executor.

Brady needs to find a better way of picking his balls.

Boy, to listen to Seattle players talk about defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, it’s almost like he already has a job or something.



Oh, wait, he does, it just hasn’t been announced.



The wink-nod reality that Quinn is going to be the new boss in Atlanta (though he technically can’t agree to a deal while the Seahawks are still playing) is evident in the word choices of his Seahawks players.



“They are getting a great coach,” linebacker Bobby Wagner said of the Falcons, via D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“I think he’s done a great job of focusing on the task at hand which is to win the Super Bowl,” Wagner said on Monday. “I know that he’s got bigger endeavors on down the line, but he’s approached it like we need to win this game.”



Wagner and defensive end Cliff Avril praised Quinn’s communication skills.



“DQ is awesome,” Avril said. “He’s a coach you can go and talk to at any time if you have any concerns about any plays or how your position is supposed to play it or whatever. . . .



“He’ll cater to you if need be, if that’s not going to hurt the defense. He’s just someone you can go talk to and break film down with.”



The Falcons need more than a motivator and an X-and-O guy, however. They’ll need players on defense if Quinn is going to have the kind of success they think he will.

I hate football too

Never in history have so many men discussed ball shrinkage as they have for the last week.  And now that the Pats have won the Super Bowl it will go on until the NFL throws someone under the bus.

Didn't care much for the ads this year.  Too many of them were over wrought or just flat out depressing.

Great Game!  Until the end....Pete went senile or something.  That was the worst play call I think I have ever seen.  And it completely negated a spectacular catch that would have made Super Bowl history had the Seahawks gone on to win the game.  Now, it will be Pete's lousy decision that is the focus and not Kearne's unbelievable catch.  I was so disgusted I went back to packing for our trip to the transplant center tomorrow. 

Your NFL fun fact for the season - The Kansas City Chiefs were the only team this season to beat BOTH the Seahawks and the Patriots. 

Claims as to how great the Seattle D are can now be put to rest.
