When (or will lol) they record another album.. ?

Alert Board Moderator about this Post!

I wonder if they will record and release another album.. I certainly THINK they will.. provided all are healthy to do that when the time comes.  Could one be possible in 2015? If so.. it will actually be a decade between Stones albums.. Consider it will have taken a decade to get to this one if it happens lol... looks like it will very likely be the last. Wow ... The <final> Stones album .. isn't that thought something?

One could say I am without empathy to ponder and hope for this considering Mick just lost his girlfriend and everything.. Well?..  not really folks.. I have been hoping for another album since their last one lol. As well, they are not retiring and they plan on touring/doing more shows.. Wanting another album from them and thinking about it at this time is not even half as selfish and small minded as all those that crossed their fingers in hoping the tour would continue or reschedule.

If they are still a functioning band (last time I checked they were).. I can wish and hope for what I want from them.

Theyve no contractual obligation to make a new album. They have no motivation to do one. Their target audience (ie, not us) isnt interested. There is far more money in doing a few concerts and much less effort involved.

No brainer.

Future Stones 'albums' will consist of Jagger writing new lyrics and adding new vocals to decades-old demos and putting them out on expanded versions of classic albums (and in some cases rewriting history by using outtakes from sessions for different albums), as he did with Exile and Some Girls. And which will be happening sooner rather than later with Sticky Fingers, as I understand.

Keith, despite having been made the main writer of barely half a dozen officially released Rolling Stones songs in the last 15 years or so has been channelling his remaining creative juices into an upcoming solo album instead.

I think that tells you everything you need to know!

Since Keith has announced he's working on a solo album that will come out when this tour is finished that will contain a bunch of songs he's not saving for a Stones album so that would mean Mick would have to write most of the songs himself, which he doesn't seem interested in doing!

Plus two weak new songs for every proposed tour.

TIME TO GO BACK AND MAKE A CLASSIC STONES RECORD WITH 10 SONGS:

SIX R&B COVERS AND FOUR ORIGINALS

OR:

EIGHT COVERS AND TWO ORIGINALS

THE "ORIGINAL MASTERS"-STYLE ABBREVIATED LENGTH WILL SELL MORE CDs AND DOWNLOADS, NOT FEWER, IF MARKETED RIGHT.

ARE YOU LISTENING, ORIGINAL MASTERS ?

BACK TO THE ROOTS !

("No, we can't go there.  We've done that already.  Have to reinvent the rock 'n' roll wheel, like we did on A Bigger Bang.  Our reps read about this 'Original Masters' idea on Rocks Off, but advised against it.  They're all young, and know what sells.")

Joey: I thank you mate. The song is now a classic in a sense.

Gazza: So your saying the Stones won't record another album is what your saying? I disagree.. I think they will go ahead with one more. Time will tell.

Keith's Solo Album: Lol ... Still waiting for that to come off folks... Keith has been working on this friggin thing for how long now on and off?? ... still nothing ever comes to fruition over it. It's been like a good three years since he has been meeting with people working this thing up hasn't it? It doesn't seem as if he has anything remotely concrete in terms of actual motivation or plans to finish/work at consistently ...much less actually release it. How long have we been hearing about these songs he's been working on... from his basement to a studio to working with others on it etc. etc.... 3 or 4 years? .. .. .. ..

I don't know if I could even consider that a strong possibility... it all seems, and always has been pretty faint and vague on this supposed solo album.

In fact ... if you want my honest opinion .. I don't get the impression he ever even truly sat down and tried to record and mix anything from a "serious" angle. Seems more like just screwing around in his basement or a studio more-over than anything as a concrete work in progress.

He hasnt had a basement studio for over five years since his wife took ill. Dont know where youre getting that from. He's been sporadically recording songs during 2012 and 2013.

His record was being mixed last autumn, so I would wager that he could release it any time. I suppose he has other priorities and commitments at the minute. There's no need for him to release a product if he isn't going to be promoting it.

If he's taking all this time to cobble together a few songs for a solo record, that plus the fact that his 'co-writer' (hah!) has shown no urgency to collaborate with him for anything more than two days every decade to fill out a greatest hits release, would suggest that they'll be getting their telegrams from the Queen to mark their 100th birthdays before they're likely to make a new record.

My hunch based on Keith's utter creative absence on ABB is that Mick is too much of an efficiency-seeker, an economizer, too organized, for Keith to write with anymore. When Keith gets to the studio, he has fragmentary bits of music that take shape organically in collaboration with Charlie and Mick. Conversely, when Mick gets to the studio, he has tracks that have already been preproduced with Matt Clifford or otherwise "finished" (except for lyrics — which Mick, for some puzzling reason, leaves to the last minute and races to complete).

These are just diametrically opposed ways of working. In retrospect, I think I might have been too harsh on Keith for his lack of output. There's still a spark there, I gather. But at this point, it's probably better nurtured by Steve Jordan than by Mick.

Ok then ... five years ago he was doing songs down there in his basement he said he wasn't sure what he was going to do with.. So five years ago he actually started this so called "solo album" up.

I can't see them mixing an album when they were basically in the middle of A Stones tour last year? Not saying it definitely did not happen.. or that your mis-informed..

But The Stones, solo and not solo, from the days of their conception (as with most major artists) normally mix an album fairly close to the time / just prior to releasing it.. not mix it down to leave it sit for a couple years.

As far as promoting it.. ? For what? .. Hell How? I pretty much doubt Keith can do shows these days like he used to do with The Whinos if that is what you mean. There is not much to promoting it besides the odd interview and photo-shoot.. these days for him if that is going to be the case. Besides.. other than certain Stones fans and some avid guitar fans..who's really going to buy it? It will never exactly be expected to sell 10 million copies depending on how much they can promote the thing.. .. ..

This album started five years ago if you want to call it that.. What I'm saying  I certainly wouldn't hold my breath for it.

As well... I wouldn't be surprised if they once again shelved it.. heck it's been on the shelf for five years now. Counting Keith's solo album as if it would get in the way of a Stones album, ESPECIALLY right now is never going to happen.

Not saying they are going to choose to do an album <over> Keith's ... Not sayin that undoubtedly they will release another newly recorded album (though IMO I "think" they will) ..**What I'm saying is ya can't really count a Keith solo album as a factor in that equation in getting in the way of a possible Stones album <IF the situation arose> in that they were all ready to do one.. I just can't see Keith saying "well hold off... I got this solo thing I wanna do right now instead" ...  Nor can ya say this supposed solo album is ready to roll and to bank on it. It has Chinese Democracy time scale production traits to it, ya sees.

Ian.

It did happen. I posted links to photos of the September mixing sessions on October 1st and there was even a title of a Gregory Isaacs song mentioned

http://rocksoff.org/cgi-bin/messageboard/YaBB.pl?num=1380585941/0

But yeah, maybe I'm 'mis-informed' and just imagined it.  Smiley

PS - I never said or suggested he's been working on a solo album five years ago or for the last five years. You're twisting this into something you wish to believe. By his own admission he barely touched a guitar after the ABB tour for a few years afterwards.

PPS - The Stones took six months off the road after Hyde Park. They're not in the middle of a tour. They're in a cycle of mini tours with no designated 'ending' and so the whole studio record/tour/hiatus bollocks is irrelevant.

PPPS - He's not going to be promoting a solo record if he's on the road with the Stones. Which, had it not been for recent tragic events would have taken up most of the first half of this year. No, I dont think he'll tour to do so when it comes out. What I meant was a short burst of promotional work, such as TV appearances, interviews and the like.

I never said you imagined it or were ms-informed. In fact, I remember, wasn't a hip-hop artist of some sort who first blew the whistle? (or was that on Mick)

What I am saying is I do't think they mixed the whole darn thing and have it ready to go. They might of toyed around with a mix or two.. but I can't see mixing the entire album to leave it sit for a couple years? Never heard of any Stone doing that with or without the band.. nor do most artists.

Sure .. not saying they didn't work on a mix or so.. but in honesty.. it seems like it wasn't actually selecting and mixing all the songs having them ready for a release when it calls for it.

Never said you said it started five years ago .. <I> did. He was doing songs in his basement for a while wasn't he? Didn't we hear he said that and in that hes not sure what to do with em.. possibly a solo jaunt if The Stones don't want them? that was how long ago now? four or five years right?

Again.. Stones album or no Stones album .. I sure am not holding my breath for Keith's solo release.

(I agree in the TV appearances..interviews etc. to promote it now.. not gonna be able to tour on his own,,, or even do whole shows on his own IMO.. ).

**Btw ... they mixed "a" song... <one> song... the article stated... (and a cover at that). That is what we know. This notion of mixing the record is stretching what we know for sure. Like I said ...not gonna hold my breath for The "supposed" Keith solo album.. I suggest you and everyone else follow this advice.

Thank you for your 'suggestion' regarding a 'supposed' record which despite me giving you evidence, you continue to seem unconvinced of its existence.

I'm not holding my breath for anything. Then again, I'm not the person who started a thread  delusionally thinking that he might write, record and release a new Rolling Stones album sometime in the near future  despite the fact that he's currently making a solo release which has triple the gestation time of an African elephant.

Most artists dont mix albums and leave them sitting around? Well - most artists dont have two musical careers, with a band and as a solo artist but I'll throw a few names at you who have. Neil Young, Prince, Johnny Cash (released just this week in fact) - want me to go on?

Ronnie Wood released an album in 1976 called 'Mahoneys Last Stand' with Ronnie Lane. He'd recorded it four years earlier for a movie. Keith's second Wingless Angels album was recorded four years before it came out. Wyman's Rhythm Kings "Struttin Our Stuff" record was done about two years before he released it as well. Jagger's Superheavy album came out in September 2011 - they'd been recording songs on and off for three years by the time they put it out.

Its a side project so it's irrelevant when it comes out. Its not as if he's going to go on the road for a year behind it.

Gazz...It is great to see your just as firm (and knowledgeable) ..

but there's a problem. This is now being spun to "recording" an album. As you know.. recording an album and mixing it are two separate processes. Many acts have recorded songs or even enough material for whole albums.. and left them sit. Rarely do they mix an album and it just sits for six months or a year.. it doesn't go that way (they try to avoid that).

At that scale.. it is very rare they mix a record and leave it sit (they try to avoid that having to occur.. which is why Keith was involved with The Stones so I found it odd in that they would be mixing or have mixed the whole album?). You were indicating they mixed all of it.. I just can't see that... and besides from the article I read they mixed <a> song... not an album.. the article said they mixed a song (and it was a cover at that). They usually wait to mix (and ultimately master) an album until they know it is to be released for an up and coming relatively soon time frame (three to five months tops from when they begin mixing it.. mixing it alone could take a week up to a month and a half).

So recording an album, is one thing... sure that happens.. but when they actually sit down to mix the record after they choose which songs are to be on it they do that for an upcoming release date fairly soon. We were talking about <mixing> it.. which I just couldn't see bc he's busy with the Stones until the end of the year..

Now as far as Keith and this solo thing.. I "know" it is factual there's been talk and he has entered the studio recording once or twice that we know of. I KNOW it is not all in your head or anyone's here. I am saying this... I just can't see it coming off any time soon (if at all)? Gosh if they finish up touring by the end of the year it won't be until spring they will release that thing.. (that's a year from now in itself) they are not going to end the Stones tour and release a Keith solo record a mere month or two afterward.

I'm saying it just doesn't seem very firm.. and I wouldn't bank on this thing <IF> The Stones decide to write or record .. Either way.. it just doesn't seem like a very solid work in progess.. even given to the fact they are supposedly doing it in intervals. Guy... I gotta be honest. From what I'm gathering.. I am not so sure a Keith Richards solo album is going to come off.

Its sure as hell more likely to come off than a Stones record is. Whether its this year or any time in the next five!
