He's rock royalty and likes to keep it old-school: Keith Richards says he doesn't own an iPod.

The Rolling Stones guitarist says he isn't a fan of the ultra-popular music device.

"I don't have an iPod. ... I still use CDs or records actually. Sometimes cassettes. It has much better sound; a much better sound than digital," he said in a recent interview.

The 69-year-old believes music lovers are "all being shortchanged" with the sound that comes out of an iPod, launched in 2001.

"My old lady's got one. My kids have got them. I say, 'Look me up this.' Or, 'Oh I like that. Check me that,'" he said. "I know what these things can do. I'm not totally anti-them."

The Rolling Stones' "50 & Counting Tour" kicks off Friday in Los Angeles. The Stones released their self-titled debut in 1964, and while Richards has accepted that the music industry is digitally driven today, he's not completely OK with it.

"They're sucked into it and they can't get out of it, nor can we; so is the public," he said. "There's something missing there, but it's the price of the future I guess."

I know a few people who don't go for this computer age, but once they would get a taste of it they would like it, it's just to overwhelming to some people, as far as digital sound Vrs Analog, I'm afraid I'm a person who loves music but I'm not into the stereo sound analyzing whatever you want to call it, like in the 70's, it was to some people to have the best stereo sound system around, spend $$$$$$$$$ on it, I play MP3 music on my computer, just as good to me as anything.

Music on iPods sounds so thin and has no bounce. I did get rid of a bunch of CDs that took up too much space, but backed them up to FLAC files. Little better sounding, but not as good as the physical media.

No iPod for me. CDs are my choice. I have some vinyl, not anything like I used to.

A friend gave me two mini-pods or whatever - the kind of iPod, way smaller than the NanoPod, with just the wheel dial. You can't see what you're looking for. I couldn't even figure out how to plug the fucking thing in to anything, yet alone get my big fat fingers to make it do anything. They were about the size of a 50 cent piece or maybe a cracker.

They got thrown out. They could only hold, I was told, about 2 hours of music.

Don't mind the maggots.

I bought one in 2007 and I love it.

I also got a nice boom box (also Apple) and I think it sounds just fine.
Being a product of the late 70s/early 80s, I did the $$$ hi fi stereo thing, and frankly, to the extent there is any difference in sound (and I have not heard it), the convenience and simplicity are well worth it.

Besides, if you get one, no one from Apple comes by and makes you burn your records or CDs -- you can have both. People do that.

I listen to CDs or music from my USB drive in the car. At home, I listen to CDs and cassettes. Sometimes, I listen to the Sirrus radio stations on my T.V. satellite. I only listen to vinyl records on special occasions.
