CROSSFIRE HURRICANE – A NEW FILM FROM THE ROLLING STONES

The Rolling Stones, the rock ‘n’ roll icons who have defined creativity, daring and durability, are to be chronicled in a kaleidoscopic new film that documents the key periods of their career and their incredible adventures.

Crossfire Hurricane, directed by Brett Morgen, provides a remarkable new perspective on the Stones’ unparalleled journey from blues-obsessed teenagers in the early 60’s to rock royalty. It’s all here in panoramic candour, from the Marquee Club to Hyde Park, from Altamont to Exile, from club gigs to stadium extravaganzas.

The film in the UK will receive a theatrical release and can be seen by Stones fans in selected cinemas across the country in October. It will also be premiered on HBO in the USA and broadcast on BBC Two later in the year.

With never-before-seen footage and fresh insights from the band themselves, the film will delight, shock and amaze longtime devotees, as well as another generation of fans, with its uniquely immersive style and tone. Crossfire Hurricane places the viewer right on the frontline of the band’s most legendary escapades.

Taking its title from a lyric in “Jumping Jack Flash”, Crossfire Hurricane gives the audience an intimate insight, for the first time, into exactly what it’s like to be part of the Rolling Stones, as they overcame denunciation, drugs, dissensions and death to become the definitive survivors. It’s the backstage pass to outdo them all.

The odyssey includes film from the Stones’ initial road trips and first controversies as they became the anti-Beatles, the group despised by authority because they connected and communicated with their own generation as no one ever had. “When we got together,” says Wyman, “something magical happened, and no one could ever copy that.”

From the outset of the film, viewers know they’re in for a white-knuckle ride. No sooner had the early Stones line-up first played live under that name in the summer of 1962 than they were bigger than the venues that tried to hold them. Wyman remembers how the crowds were soon inspiring manic behaviour, especially among screaming girls, whose uncontrollable excitement was obvious as stardom beckoned for the band already earmarked as the bad guys with press headlines, “Would you let your daughter marry a Rolling Stone?”

Riots and the chaos of early tours are graphically depicted, as is the birth of the Jagger-Richards songwriting partnership. The many dramas they encountered are also fully addressed, including the Redlands drug bust, the descent of Brian Jones into what Richards calls “bye-bye land,” and the terror and disillusionment of 1969’s Altamont Festival.

The band’s rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle is also discussed with extraordinary forthrightness, including at the time of their seminal 1972 album Exile On Main St, which topped the British charts both then and 38 years later with its deluxe reissue. Their very survival repeatedly under threat, we see how the Stones survived with a backs-to-the-wall spirit. “We may be going down,” says Keith, “but we’re not going down your way.”

The film illustrates the Stones’ evolution from being, as Mick vividly describes it, “the band everybody hated to the band everybody loves”: through the hedonistic 1970s and Keith’s turning-point bust in Canada to the spectacular touring phenomenon we know today. Richards also reveals the song that he believes defines the “essence” of his writing relationship with Jagger more than any other.

Asked in a formative interview in the film what it is that sets them apart from other groups, Jagger says with quiet understatement: “A chemical reaction seems to have happened.” Keith Richards added, “You can’t really stop the Rolling Stones, you know when that sort of avalanche is facing you, you just get out of the way”. It’s been happening ever since, and the life and times of the Rolling Stones have never been as electrifyingly portrayed as they are in Crossfire Hurricane.

Director Brett Morgen added, “Crossfire Hurricane invites the audience to experience firsthand the Stones’ nearly mythical journey from outsiders to rock and roll royalty. This is not an academic history lesson. Crossfire Hurricane allows the viewer to experience the Stones’ journey from a unique vantage point. It’s an aural and visual roller coaster ride.”

Worldwide distributors of Crossfire Hurricane are Eagle Rock Entertainment in London, with Tremelo Productions and Milkwood Films as the production companies.

Eagle Rock Entertainment Chairman and CEO, Terry Shand said:  “We are very pleased to continue our association with the Rolling Stones visual rights agenda and their collaboration with such great filmmakers.”

As befits the first rock band to reach the 50-year milestone with their global stature now greater than ever, the film combines extensive historical footage, much of it widely unseen, with contemporary commentaries by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood and former Stones Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor. Period interviews, extensive live performance material and news archive give the production a truly kinetic aura and no-holds-barred approach.

Crossfire Hurricane has taken over a year to make and produce with the full cooperation of The Rolling Stones and will be released in November.

A new film called CROSSFIRE HURRICANE to be released to theaters

The Rolling Stones have announced details of a new documentary titled Crossfire Hurricane.

Directed by Brett Morgen, the film documents the band's career from their early road trips and gigs in the 1960s, via the release of 1972's seminal 'Exile On Main Street' right up to present day.
It will also feature stacks of unseen footage of the band, including commentaries from Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood and former Stones Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor. In one early interview when asked what sets the Rolling Stones apart from other bands, Jagger says: " A chemical reaction seems to have happened". Richards added: " You can't really stop the Rolling Stones, you know when that sort of avalanche is facing you, you just get out of the way".

Director Brett Morgen said: “Crossfire Hurricane invites the audience to experience firsthand the Stones' nearly mythical journey from outsiders to rock and roll royalty. This is not an academic history lesson. Crossfire Hurricane allows the viewer to experience the Stones' journey from a unique vantage point. It's an aural and visual roller coaster ride.”

'Crossfile Hurricane' will premiere in cinemas in October and will go on general release in November.

The movie will premiere at the 56th London Film Festival,  which runs from October 10 to 21st.  The Stones are likely to be in attendance. It will be this years American Express Gala screening

http://www.timeout.com/london/feature/3015/london-film-festival-2012-preview

Online and telephone bookings for BFI Members open on September 13 with public booking following on September 24. So, if you were thinking of becoming a BFI member, now’s the best time to join (annual membership is £40).

Last minute tickets are released in October. For handy email alerts, go to the BFI’s LFF website, click on the ‘Tickets’ tab and subscribe to their festival email bulletin.

You can also queue outside venues for ‘stand-bys’, which go on sale 30 minutes before each screening. The festival organisers often have tickets available, even for screenings billed as fully booked, so it pays to persevere.

Four hundred mile flight away, Luxy and hardly any leave left! The likes of Ade, Stewed & Keefed, Honkytonkman etc would live in that part of the country, but not me.

If I'm in London again this year (and its a big 'if'), it'll be for one of the 02 shows - but only if its on a weekend (which one of them WILL be if my info is correct) and if the tickets are affordable.

well...the showbiz411.com guy who posted the wrong tour dates is saying the tickets are $500 and $200. Thats pretty similar to what New York tickets would have cost on the last tour, with an adjustment for inflation, so thats actually believable IMO. (its obviously discounting the crushing inevitability that they'll siphon off the absolute BEST seats to brokers, fanasylum and the like for four figure sums)

London prices, whilst exorbitant compared to the rest of Europe, still arent as bad as the US. £150 was the top ticket price last time, which is just over half what the US top price tickets were ($450). So a £200 top ticket price isnt far fetched. Nosebleeds at the 02 in 2007 were £85 or so (they did secretly keep the first four or five rows EXCLUSIVELY for Fan Asylum though - at about £1,500- £2,000 per package - a  decision and price figure which were never advertised when they announced the shows)

The catch is how many tickets in the lower price ranges there are  - something they never disclose. On the last tour that varied dramatically from one city to the next. There were far fewer of them, for example, in New York, LA, London etc than there would have been in the likes of Boise or Missoula.

My guess is that whilst they might advertise a wide RANGE of prices, there'll probably be very few of them in the cheaper ranges. And you can bet that they'll be held back when the tickets go on sale to con you into panic buying the exorbitant ones.  If I dont get them, I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it, to be honest.

Rock’n’roll legends The Rolling Stones reach their 50th anniversary and the LFF marks this extraordinary milestone with the World Premiere of this commemorative documentary from Academy Award-nominated Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays In the Picture; Chicago 10). The first comprehensive overview of their career is meticulous in its construction, using classic Stones tracks to segue between phases of their enthralling story – from teenage fandom, to counterculture heroes, through drug busts, Brian Jones’ tragic death, band-mates departures, arrivals and everything in between. With a strong focus on the first 20 years, the wealth of rich, rare and often unseen archive material includes newsreel, film and TV appearances, excerpts from famous previous Stones movies and raucous, visceral live performance footage. Band members past and present have actively participated in the making of the film and one of its many pleasures is the specially recorded audio commentary by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, and Ronnie Wood as well as new interviews with Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor. Alternately nostalgic, satisfied and very funny, they not only give insider testimony on some of the most notorious moments in rock’n’roll history, they also reveal the dynamic that has ensured the band’s longevity. When the film kick-starts with the quip ‘never let the truth spoil a good story’, it functions as a coolly ironic preface. The truth is that The Rolling Stones – the trials and triumphs of their lives, their extraordinary success, their impact on the history of popular culture and most of all, their music – threaten at every turn to exceed story and become myth. One of the great achievements of this dazzling tribute is that it revels in all that, but it also succeeds at keeping it down, occasionally dirty, and very real.

More2Screen is delighted to announce that it has been appointed by Eagle Rock Entertainment to distribute the new Rolling Stones’ film, Crossfire Hurricane, to cinemas worldwide (ex–US) on Thursday 18 October. The film will be broadcast LIVE by satellite from the worldwide premiere at the London Film Festival and will include live footage from the red carpet before the film screening begins.

Crossfire Hurricane, directed by Brett Morgen, provides a remarkable new perspective on the Stones’ unparalleled journey from blues-obsessed teenagers in the early 60s to rock royalty for almost five decades.  The film combines extensive historical footage, much of it widely unseen, with contemporary commentaries by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood and former Stones, Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor. Period interviews, extensive live performance material and news archive give the production a truly kinetic aura and no-holds-barred approach.

Christine Costello, Managing Director at More2Screen comments: “More2Screen is privileged to distribute this momentous Rolling Stones film to our digital cinema partners worldwide. With the addition of the ‘live from the red carpet’ footage this will be a fantastic rock n’ roll live cinema event for the new autumn season.”

Andrew Winter of Eagle Rock Entertainment said: “We’re delighted to be working with More2Screen once again on the theatrical release of Crossfire Hurricane. It is fitting to celebrate The Rolling Stones’ 50 years in music by sharing this worldwide premiere event with the band’s fans across the world.”

A recorded version of the film will be available to cinemas on DCP from late November 2012.

More2Screen is the leading London–based alternative content distributor with more than 6 years’ experience acquiring and distributing world-class opera, ballet, music concerts, theatre and special event films to cinemas across the globe – including 23 live broadcasts, over 100 different recorded productions and 3D live/recorded content.

According to my learned friend ErikSnow who studies this things in great detail, that 1973 clip with the ping pong balls comes from Sydney.

There's no circulating video of those two gigs, so it'd be quite a treat if it ever did surface.

This is from the press release:

As befits the first rock band to reach the 50-year milestone with their global stature now greater than ever, the film combines extensive historical footage, much of it widely unseen, with contemporary commentaries by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood and former Stones Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor. Period interviews, extensive live performance material and news archive give the production a truly kinetic aura and no-holds-barred approach.

Good, well edited movie with some clips that were new to me - but the end took me by surprise...footage of Fort Worth 78 morphing into 1981 and then....roll the credits interspersed with footage of the Stones playing "All down the Line" at the Beacon in 2006..

My first thought was - 'where the fuck is the rest of the movie' and then my mate pointed out that its not a career spanning documentary but that it was subtitled 'The Rise of the Rolling Stones'

Pretty enjoyable as a documentary, funny in parts (Charlie especially) and sad as well (the footage of Brian looking lost and forlorn in the outtake footage of "One Plus One" and "Rock n Roll Circus" is REALLY poignant)

..but one really major drawback

Not a single mention that this guy  stu watching how stupid we are LOL  ever even existed. An oversight that's utterly criminal.

Was also a bit strange that all the Stones wives and girlfriends were airbrushed out of the story completely - you cant really do a documentary on the Stones in the 60s and omit Anita and Marianne - but removing Stu from the whole thing (although hes seen in the background once or twice) is a pretty criminal slight on the man's memory.

Sounded a bit "Dont Stop" like to me. But a bit better.

They played bits of both of the new songs over the end credits.

I guess its the director but the Stones are credited as executive producers or assistant producers (I think).

All six surviving band members are interviewed - all of it off-camera and used as background to the film footage.

This sums my own impressions on the film. Its enjoyable but feels quite hollow as they gloss over some of the more rough stuff, brian dying is the darkest place they go - and altamont - and they get to 81 and leave it, i guess they don't want to document the jagger/richards rift and them aging etc but it felt like the ending of sopranos.

its a decent film, but its not excellent, or maybe its just the glaring omissions tarnish what is a well made film with some great unseen footage and snippets of very clear quality rehearsals / outtakes etc from the late 60s / early 70s

and of course THE glaring omission, Stu.

also got to hear a bit of one more shot and it sounds very stonesy, not 'better' than doom but maybe more appropriate or closer to their sound - looking forward to its release

enjoyable enough but maybe not worth many more watches (though maybe it just can't compare, i watched it in the same theatre where i saw Pearl Jam Twenty, now THAT is a biopic!)

First Mick Taylor and now this. What a bunch of wankers. Next time they talk with nostalgia about Ian Stewart, I'm going to throw up.

Does anyone have an answer about why Mick Taylor wasn't up there with them. Is the slipped disc really the reason?

The funny thing is that it doesnt deal with anything prior to 1964. Whilst theres no (circulating) video footage of the Stones prior to February '64, I did expect some discussion about the very early days. Its as if they just exploded, fully formed in '64 or so.

The movie opens with footage of the band at MSG in 72 as shown on the Dick Cavett Show, then when they get on a plane afterwards, it sort of morphs into footage of them arriving at Amsterdam airport in the mid 60s.

Theres some lovely mid 60s footage I'd never seen before which augurs well for the expanded Charlie is My Darling. Fantastic live footage of (my memory may have thrown me here) 'I'm Alright' from what looks like Belfast 1965 which ends in a riot, clips of Mick and Keith working on composing "Sittin On A Fence" and even super 8 footage of the London Bach Choir doing their bit on 'You Cant Always Get What You Want'.  If you like watching riots, you wont be disappointed!

Its a well put together movie for the most part and well edited. I mean, you could be really anal and let the fact that some of the footage doesnt quite match up to the subject (eg they show B&W film from Nellcote, the narration talks about the problems recording in that environment and then you see them recording 'Loving Cup' - to someone who wasnt a Stones nerd, theyd think THAT was from Nellcote when its actually the Montreux '72 rehearsal footage transferred into B&W for the sake of continuity) but watching a movie by nitpicking one's way through stuff like that is missing the whole point, I think.

Was there any footage from the band practicing from earlier this year? For some reason i thought that would have made it into the film.  Hopefully it appears on the blu ray/dvd.

No.

The only footage after 1981 was them playing "All down the line" at the Beacon mixed in with the closing credits (it was sort of a way of saying 'after all that madness, we're still doing it'). When the song ended and the credits rolled properly, the music played was "Doom & Gloom" and "One More Shot", about a minute or so of each.

The scene immediately before that shows them playing 'Miss You' from Fort Worth '78 and then its mixed in with stadium footage from 81 (and theres probably a few seconds of subsequent tours like VL etc, but blink and you'll miss it)

They preceded the movie with the new ad announcing the London and Newark shows.

Theres actually some nice 'background music' during the movie which included an instrumental of Moonlight Mile and an alternate take of No Expectations.

Can you sometimes get exactly what you want? The Rolling Stones turn the clock back on 50 years and open up the vaults. With mixed results.

Greg Wetherall.Music, film and theater critic

...

In recent years, the artists of rock 'n' roll's golden period have begun to open up and look back, becoming less precious about exposure and mystique. Dylan has stepped out of the shadows and written his own book, Chronicles, and even allowed Martin Scorsese to interview him for his documentary, No Direction Home. Led Zeppelin have just wrapped up and readied for release footage of their celebratory one-off 2007 reunion show filmed at London's O2, Neil Young has penned his memoirs, as has Pete Townshend. Long mocked because of their advancing age (grey hair and wisdom is anathema to the rock music crowd), the Rolling Stones plow on. Interestingly, if blues or jazz were their trade, age would not be an issue. However, it is not, and it is. Undeterred, these baby boomers are still rocking out and -- if the latest single "Doom and Gloom" is anything to go by -- still capable of producing the goods. It's quite possibly their strongest single in years.

It is high time therefore for a look back on an illustrious career that has famously had more than its fair share of sex, drugs and rock n' roll. However, those looking for a Beatles Anthology-esque examination will be disappointed. This is more ramshackle than that, much like the band themselves. This is a concise one-off film of only 118 minutes. Considering it took director, Brett Morgan, four months to wade through the archive footage (with assistance from co-producer, Mick Jagger), it is a shame that he hasn't been minded to create a more sprawling work, befitting of the Stones' lengthy career. In fact, the documentary ends abruptly at around 1977, and offers nothing after this date, save for closing credit live footage of Exile On Main Street track "All Down The Line" lifted from the 2008 film, Shine A Light.

Opening with color backstage footage and a live rendition of "Street Fighting Man," attention soon turns to the early days, and the maelstrom that consisted of live performance in the early and mid-60s for the Rolling Stones, with the incessant screaming and stage invasions. Emphasis is firmly placed on what it must have been like within this vortex, having to deal with a rapid ascent and devotional teenage girls (England) and boys (the rest of the world).

Whilst discussing the early period, coverage is given in a frank manner as to the band's feeling about the demise of original band member, Brian Jones. Whilst acknowledging his talent, it turns out that the band felt a degree of inevitability over his eventual death. Even though an element of mystery hangs over the drowning, Jones' relationship with drugs is well-known (Godard's film, Sympathy for the Devil, shows an induced and distracted Jones in the studio). As matters arose, the death came only two days before a free Hyde Park gig in front of 500,000 people -- a gig that would mark a baptism of fire for new guitarist, Mick Taylor, and also act as a remembrance for Jones. Drummer Charlie Watts recalls Mick crying in the corner of the dressing room on the day of the performance. By contrast, Keith states that his reason for not going to the funeral is because he didn't want to make it 'a circus,' and that he didn't even go to the funeral of his own mother and father.

Arriving at the late '60s, there are compelling scenes offered up by the Altamont stabbing of Meredith Hunter, but these are taken from the previously released feature, Gimme Shelter. This time around, however, it is enhanced by comments from the band looking back, which is illuminating seeing as it has since been perceived as the incident that killed the hippie dream and the anti-Woodstock.

Although the archive footage is interesting, there is not necessarily a dearth of unseen live material. The narrative itself is loosely played with, especially at the start, diverging down different avenues whilst vaguely seeking a chronological path (of sorts).

There are some interesting revelations contained within this documentary that will interest fans. For example, Mick Taylor finally provides the reason as to why he left the Stones. Jagger himself concedes that he did not know or understand why, and Taylor goes on to explain that during the early '70s, he was falling into heroin addiction.

Bill Wyman also distills what he believes is the sound of the Rolling Stones. Bearing a theory to Richards oft-quoted opinion that many bands can rock but not many can roll, he points towards the sound as being a consequence of Charlie's decision to follow Keith's lead, which means that the drums come in slightly behind the guitar, which is unusual in itself, whilst Bill's bass would be slightly ahead. Wyman describes this as leading to 'a wobble' effect, where things could fall apart at any given moment.

There is some interesting black and white footage of Mick and Keith writing material together in what is either backstage or in some sort of hotel room. Having an insight into how they worked together on the verge of what would be a particularly prolific part of their career is fascinating. Keith later voices opinion that of all the songs they wrote, "Midnight Rambler" would be the essence of the Jagger/Richards writing partnership. He states a belief that anyone else could have written any of the other tunes, but only he and Mick would have thought about making an opera out of the blues.

Coincidentally, much like that tune, this is certainly a film that goes on a ramble of its own. Starting in slightly messy fashion, like a band tuning up after a short time apart, and taking a while to lock into the groove. What is perhaps most surprising in this film, is that Mick Jagger possibly comes out as the most human and grounded out of all of them, save for Charlie Watts (of course), as he takes the wind and glamour out of the sails of some of Richard's more wild testaments. He is also the most openly candid in his reflections.

This has a lot common with Scorsese's aforementioned, No Direction Home; a film which covered Dylan in his '60s phase up to his conversion from acoustic guitar to electric, and the reaction that he encountered. In that film, Dylan spoke looking back on the events in talking heads. This film is much like that in spirit. Brett Morgan has ensured that the new interviews remain off-screen, however, so that old footage can take up the screen time. It must be said that the strongest live footage remains those procured from the previously released Ladies & Gentleman.

As far as flaws go, no reference is made at all to Ian Stewart, which seems a glaring omission considering this is an overview of the Rolling Stones' career and all the significant players. His distinctive piano work enhanced songs such as "Brown Sugar," amongst many others, and his lack of appearance in this documentary feels unfair and a missed opportunity. Also, there is no real detail on the relationship the Stones had with manager Andrew Loog Oldham.

Introducing the film, Jagger congratulated Brett Morgan for managing to cover 50 years of the Stones in a couple of hours. Well, he hasn't managed that. He has covered 25 years pretty well, but with some gaping holes. Whether this is down to the Stones' reticence in opening up, or a lack of probing is anyone's guess. The sudden conclusion to the film stuns, and makes for a dismissive hand waving to the output of the Stones in their later years. Although it is arguable that no sane person would equate this latter-day output as being near those of the first 20-or-so years of their existence, there have been a few interesting diversions in the subsequent post-Tattoo You era. Scant time is offered for Ronnie Wood and his involvement, which is a pity.

All of this begs a question: Is there a directors cut? Much like Cameron Crowe's film on Pearl Jam, Pearl Jam Twenty, is there a chunkier cut filling out and coloring in the parts omitted here?

At the premiere, Jagger gave a warning to the audience in preparation for the film saying that not all of the clothes stand the test of time. This may be true. However, even though the clothes may seem dated and out of time, the music and story feels timeless.

...
I know it's only a rock 'n' roll film, and you might not necessarily love it, but you'll probably like it.

He was at that funeral.

I think I remember him being at her bedside during her last days, as well.

They played bits of both of the new songs over the end credits.

any where to hear it? I'd love to hear more about it if possible.

Sounds like a great documentary, but I don't know why it's only goes to '77, I guess all this new footage comes from what wasn't shown in Charlie is my darling, I think not to include Stu is terrible, he's not only co-founded but was on tour with The Stones up till he died, he contributed a lot of Piano on well 'known stuff, Ya Yas for instance.

Mick says in a new interview in UNCUT that he was a bit surprised it only went to 1981 - but that was the director's decision.

He said that they could do a second part if they wanted to.

Although, to be honest, I wouldnt hold my breath for that.

Keith has a bit of a track record for rewriting history. During the movie, when talking about the riots at their gigs, he claimed that they didnt finish a show for two or three years - a complete fabrication.

Mick Jagger recalls Rolling Stones rooftop drama in Chester
Oct 25 2012 by David Holmes, Chester Chronicle

...
ROLLING STONES frontman Mick Jagger has recalled one of their wilder gigs
which took pace in Chester in the 1960s.

Mick was speaking on the red carpet before the world premiere of documentary Crossfire Hurricane, celebrating the band’s 50th anniversary, when the group was reunited with bass player Bill Wyman for the first time in 20 years.

Mick, 69, whose band embarks on a tour of Britain and the US next month, was asked by former Chronicle reporter Marc Baker, from Wrexham, about a concert his own mum Beverly went to in Chester in the 60s.

The band had to escape along the rooftops after the gig because the venue was surrounded by screaming teenage fans.

Mick said: “I remember we had a lady pianist with us also, who was one of the opening acts, I forgot her name and she was a concert pianist and it was quite funny.”

It is believed the gig was at the former ABC Theatre (new Primark extension) on September 15, 1964. And Mick reassured the journalist he was not losing his memory when it came to recalling the earlier gigs.

“I remember everything darling!” he said.

Talking about the documentary, Mick added: “I decided to do this film so we could look back at how mad it was and what a great time it was. The wildness is quite an important part of it. It captures the strangeness of that world we were living in.”

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards recalled the same Chester gig earlier this year when he told BBC 6 Music’s Paul Sexton: “One time in Chester, we have the Chief Constable of Cheshire with us in full regalia with the ribbons and the medals and the swagger stick. Show’s finished earlier than he expects. The whole theatre is surrounded. Mayhem. Maniac teenage girls, bless their hearts.

“‘Right,’ he says. ‘The only way out, up the stairs, over the rooftops, I know the way!’. Suddenly you’re in his hands. So we get up on the Chester rooftops, and it’s raining. The first thing that happens is the Chief Constable almost slides off the roof. A couple of his bobbies managed to hold him up. We’re standing in the middle of this rooftop saying: ‘I’m not too familiar with this area, where do we go?’.

“He pulls himself together, and in a shambolic sort of way, they manage to get us down through a skylight and out of a laundry chute, or something. That was what happened every day, and you took it as normal. Everything was a Goon Show.”

Well, 14 weeks since the exhibition at Somerset House in July and 10 months since the jam session they did together last December.  Pretty close, in fairness.

Very nice pic of the boys in NY! I'm surprised they are here since the London shows are coming up soon.  This is the same theatre where they premiered Shine A Light.

From Constant Touring to Women Throwing Bras, 2012 Pretty Much Still Feels Like 1962 to Keith Richards

...
By JIMI CELESTE

At the premiere of HBO’s Rolling Stones documentary, Crossfire Hurricane, which commemorates the band’s 50th anniversary, lead singer Mick Jagger proved that after half a century, he’s still the consummate showman—even when he’s not prancing around onstage.

“You know, I love these questions—‘How can you ever realize when you started out that you were going to be 50 years later with a documentary, and still together with the band?’” he told the audience at the Ziegfeld Theater in Manhattan on Tuesday. “And [to that] I say, ‘Well, you know something—three years into the band’s career, I booked the Ziegfeld Theater for tonight. You know, it’s very busy this time of year.” The crowd roared.

Jagger also joked about the costumes he’s worn during his career—“When I look back at the clothes that we wore, all of which I’ve kept, by the way . . . I’ve had a deep insight: you know, I’m never going to wear those clothes ever again. I promise,” he said.

He noted that when they started out in 1962, America was a simpler place. “There were no smartphones; there was no e-mail. And we didn’t read other people’s e-mails, so we didn’t know if four-star generals were having affairs.”

Director Brett Morgen said that the documentary was Jagger’s idea and, it turns out, is a display of the rocker’s business acumen. “I thought I’d better hijack the film unless someone else made a very boring film of it,” Jagger explained to VF Daily before the screening, about his motivation for the project. “Once you’re in the market making it, other people don’t go near you. Which is what happened.”

Morgen advised choosing a narrative for the film. “‘If you’re going to do a two-hour film about 50 years, you can’t do it all. So we decided to do the story of how the Rolling Stones became respectable,” the director said. “But the good part for the audience is [that for] 98 percent of the film, they’re not respectable.”

As far as career highlights, Jagger recalled all the big achievements. “When we first got a record in the charts, when we had our first No. 1, that was big. When we did our first arena tour of America, that was huge. When we did our first stadium tour of America, that was great,” he told VF Daily. “There are a lot of highlights. A lot of lowlights, too,” he added, laughing.

Fellow Rolling Stone Keith Richards couldn’t pinpoint any specific favorite memories from the past 50 years. “It would be far too difficult to go into now,” he said. “I’ll tell you, they’re all great, you know. Even getting busted was great!” he said, laughing. (Richards’s drug busts in the U.K. and Toronto are featured in the film.)

Richards says that touring with the band today isn’t all that different from when they first started out. “Well, at first we were in station wagons, and we had to drive everywhere. Otherwise, not a lot’s changed,” he told us. “When a bunch of musicians have to do a show every two or three days, and they have to travel and live together, it’s amazingly similar. I mean, it could be 1962 today, as far as I’m concerned. You know, there’s a feeling of energy and comradeship, and always looking for the next show. You want to make it better. That’s it.”

So then they still have screaming groupies following them around? “I hope so,” said Jagger. “I did get a bra in Paris!” Richards added.

They're all going green! Mick Jagger follows Robert Pattinson by stepping out in an emerald suit... while girlfriend L'Wren Scott adds sparkle in scarlet

The 69-year-old rocker stepped out sporting a green velvet double breasted two piece and red and green pin striped shirt at the premiere of the Rolling Stones new documentary Crossfire Hurricane in New York.

Jagger was joined by his girlfriend L'Wren Scott who added a dash of sparkle in a stunning sparkling red dress with fur collar and matching heels.

...
It's easy being green: Robert Pattinson opted for an emerald suit at Monday night's Twilight premiere

As usual, the 6"3 45-year-old model-turned designer towered above the rocker as they posed for photographs on the red carpet.

Last night Twilight star Pattinson revealed he designed his distinctive green Gucci-made suit himself.  'I had a dream about an emerald green houndstooth suit, so I got one made,' he told Entertainment Weekly.

They were joined by band members Charlie Watts, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood who all looked happy and relaxed at the premiere of the two-part documentary which will be shown on U.S. channel HBO and the BBC in the U.K.

Crossfire Hurricane - the title taken from a lyric from the band's 1968 hit Jumpin' Jack Flash -will explore the band's formative years, concentrating mainly on their music.

Jagger is also co-producer of the documentary which features footage of the band's early concerts and interviews with former members Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor.

'We were playing pop songs to 10-year-olds,' Jagger recalled in an interview with The Huffington Post. 'It was very weird. You get used to it in 10 minutes, it's not that difficult. It's much easier to play three pop songs to teenagers than two hours of blues music to connoisseurs.'

The Stones will also play five concerts in London and the New York area over the next month.

'This band is famous for not obeying the rules and bowing to pressure or anything,' guitarist Richards said.  'But over the course of the year we felt more and more aware that there are folks out there counting on us. You can't let them down.

'At the same time, you realise that the folks are right,' he added. 'Playing together over the last five months you realise that there's this thing out of your life that's been missing.'

Jagger said: 'I thought it was important to do some sort of a show, even if it was just a club gig.he 'I didn't want it to be too nostalgic and I wanted to be pretty irreverent about it.

'My idea of the tour is calling it "F***Off, We're 50.'''

Meanwhile, although Mick has been dating designer L'Wren for more than a decade, he has no plans on tying the knot for a third time.

He told Women and Home magazine earlier this year: 'To be honest I don’t think much of marriage.

'I’m not saying people shouldn’t do it but it’s not for me. And not for quite a few others it would appear.'

Mick was married to Biana from 1971 to 1977, before tying the knot with Texan model Jerry Hall in 1990, before splitting with her in 1999.

The rocker has seven children by four women including models Elizabeth and Georgia May Jagger from his relationship with Hall.

Hey everyone. I'm back! Here's my story of the event.

For many, many years I have been a fanatical fan of the Rolling Stones. They have been the one constant in my life from a young boy until present day. I cannot stress this enough - it's more than just music - and it always will be. Through all the good times and bad times, fun times and not so fun times, I can rely on the Rolling Stones to carry me through it. And going to see them in concert is more than just a concert experience. It's my electric church to paraphrase Hendrix.  I suspect some of my fellow fans can relate to my feelings.

I showed up around 530-ish. The press, some 12 or 13 year old female fans and onlookers littered the sidewalks. The girls were on cell phones trying to figure out what hotel the Stones are in.That was funny. It's 2012 and 50 years in, young chicks are still trying to get into hotel rooms.  A bunch of suit and tie types were at the end of the red carpet – which just so happened to be the front door of the theater. I recognized one of the HBO execs but no one from the Stones camp.

The atmosphere was that of a concert. People were all but running you over to get their ticket from a booth behind the red carpet. With ticket in hand I ask an usher where to go. At this point I'm just on the other side of the end of the red carpet – fans were already glommed around the opening near the front door. He points me to a side door.

I go upstairs to the reception room, off to the side of the escalator, and wait. It’s packed. I decide I can't hang with this packed nonsense - I'm stepping back out to the escalator area. And then someone comes up the escalator.

Short guy, long hair, velvet clothes and light on his feet. He’s looking around for where to go and he’s right in front of me. Close enough to be in my space. He is waiting for someone on the steps, and meanwhile he’s right in front of me! It’s Mick Jagger! I wanted to faint like those girls on Ed Sullivan. Up next comes L’Wren Scott. They walk past me to another room. Mick Jagger walking is unreal. It's like he floats quickly with a head of thick, dark touring hair. I resisted the urge to touch his cool looking velvet jacket.

Up next comes Charlie Watts - the most daper man in any room anywhere in the world. He’s right in front of me just like Mick was. He then makes a beeline to someone in the reception room. They hug/kiss etc. and meanwhile the room is packed with fans and nobody knows Charlie is in the room, just like they didn’t know Mick was just on the other side of the door.

I take a look down the steps and see Keith’s head of security. Here we go. Up the steps comes Keith Richards. Keith is now right in front of my face. I’m smiling.  And he’s smiling too. Here I am face to face with my hero. How often does that happen? He looked FANTASTIC. They all did. He also sounds nothing like he does in interview. He speaks clean and clear, is personable and a real joy to be around.

Face to face with my Gods.  Un-fucking-real. I'm still trying to put my brain around that evening. It wasn't like it was in the flash of an eye either - everything went into slow motion and I was able to enjoy every moment.

Long Live The Rolling Stones!!!

And Make No Mistake - Stones are going to be out of this world on stage. The future is bright for these lads. They are united and focused and on top of their game. Keith looked like he was ready to take the stage and riff the night away. Sobriety. That's all I can say.

LA Times Review: Rolling Stones myth, fact swirl in 'Crossfire Hurricane'

...

'Crossfire Hurricane' on HBO has the Rolling Stones telling their own story in an energetic, streamlined form.

By Robert Lloyd, Los Angeles Times Television Critic

November 14, 2012, 2:35 p.m.

If you needed another reminder of the implacability of time, the Rolling Stones are currently celebrating 50 years in show business — a fact that might blow the minds of people old enough to use the phrase "blow my mind" and at the same time mean less than nothing to people young enough to regard 50 years as an imponderable abstraction.

As part of the band's several-pronged multimedia anniversary — a two-year party, dating either from the initial 1962 confluence of blues fans Brian Jones, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards or to the January 1963 addition of last original Stone Charlie Watts — HBO will premiere Thursday a new documentary, "Crossfire Hurricane." The title, taken from the song "Jumpin' Jack Flash," reflects the film's temperament: It pictures their life together as a swirling maelstrom that sucks them up out of the London clubs in the early '60s and spits them out, a decade and a half later, as the stadium attraction they remain to this day, when they feel like it.

Director Brett Morgen (co-director, with Nanette Burstein, of the visually fanciful 2002 Robert Evans documentary "The Kid Stays in the Picture") begins with a series of voice-overs from his panel of somewhat contradictory narrators, as if to say, This cannot be definitive: "It's almost a fairy story, you know," says Keith. Charlie "can't remember much of it, to be honest" and Mick can remember some of it but says that it's all written down somewhere, and Bill Wyman, the last man to quit the Rolling Stones, quotes the old adage that one shouldn't "let the truth spoil a good story."

Like the Evans film, which was a kind of illustrated memoir, "Crossfire Hurricane" relies almost exclusively on the voices of its subjects. (This is an authorized biography.) Given that there are seven of them, however, including former members Wyman and Mick Taylor and the late Jones, heard in archival clips, there is a certain amount of self-correction and myth-busting.

The principals, who sat for a reported 80 hours of interviews, are heard but not, in their present forms, seen, avoiding the cognitive dissonance that results from the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band also being perhaps its oldest. (Mick turns 70 next year; Charlie is 71, Wyman 76.)

It is, for all its two and a half hours, a streamlined retelling, organized more around energy and atmosphere than facts and figures. (As have chroniclers before him, Morgen discerns in the Stones' clubhouse and career a dialogue between truth and fiction, playacting and authenticity, as embodied most obviously, though not categorically, in "Glimmer Twins" Mick and Keith, the theatrical superego and the dedicated id.)

Some major events zip by in dependent clauses; some important supporting players, like pianist-turned-road manager Ian Stewart, might as well never have been born. The band's private lives, except as regards the unavoidable matter of drug use, do not come into it at all. But the essential essentials are essentially here.

My quibbles with it as a film are minor. It feels a little visually overstuffed here and there and inevitably loses a little steam toward the end. But viewers without much prior knowledge of the band may well be intrigued; fans with too much knowledge may whine a little over what was left out, but should be pleased by what has made it in, and what they haven't seen or heard. There is a healthy amount of little-to-unseen footage, some alternate takes of famous songs, and at least one late-date revelation.

From reupholsterers of American blues and R&B, to louche chroniclers of Swinging London, to revolutionists for the hell of it, to jet-set tax exiles, and finally to beloved old grandpas of rock — the irony of their evolution is not lost on them, that a band so perfectly expressive of its times now exists out of time, as perpetual purveyors of what might be called The Rolling Stones Experience.

But the music, at least, has remained unruly. They may be an institution, but they remain just crummy enough to keep from ever seeming slick.

"You can't be young forever," are the last words Mick speaks in the film, and are followed immediately by footage from the 2005 Beacon Theatre concerts Martin Scorsese shot for his "Shine a Light," as if to say: Not forever, no, but 50 years, just maybe.

I saw that this morning before I left for work...made me giddy! I love those guys!!!!

Great stuff with some excellent one-liners.

Funny that Mick forgets that Ronnie has not only been arrested, but that he and Jo actually spent five days in jail (in St Martin in the Caribbean) in early 1980 when they got busted for cocaine.  So, even Ronnie's WIFE has spent more time in jail than Mick and Keith combined!

Yep. I know EXACTLY howe you felt Mr Monkey. We are all just geeky Stones mutants!!!  Perverted Mick  Ouch!  Are you fucking serious?

Still thinking about my friend Steel Wheels and his experience at the premiere. Standing at the top of an escalator JUST as the Stones arrive and ascend for the film. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

The TINGLE is definitely in the air!  Who stole this one? (Seriously)  really?

Very cool! Glad you got in and as luck would have it, in the right place at the right time! I saw L'Wren for the first time at The Ziegfeld for the Shine A Light Premiere and shes quite stunning to look at. Seeing the Stones close enough up to touch is as good as excitement gets! So happy they are in fine form too!

Watched it last night...what a cool document.  Certainly wouldn't stand alone as THE history of the band, but that's obviously not what they were going for. Kudos to Mick for steering this into more interesting territory...a treatise on fame and youthful rebellion.

I agree. It's hard to please us die-hard fans, because most documentaries and media features are too general and are filled with stuff we have already seen and already know.

I found the whole tone of this spot on, and although we have seen much of the footage before, there was some that was new to me and it was well edited. The boy's comments on Brian's fall and death seemed really heartfelt and really moved me. The Altamont bit really conveyed the menacing atmosphere.

All in all, I thought it was great.

Amazon Uk are listing a release for the blu-ray as January 7th

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crossfire-Hurricane-Blu-ray-Rolling-Stones/dp/B009SP4YTG...

Running time is 142 minutes which, if correct, means an extra 24 minutes of footage that isn't in the movie.

And a little reminder for anyone in the UK that the movie is being shown in two parts over the next two Saturdays on BBC2. Part 1 is tomorrow (17th November) as part of a special night of Stones programmes to mark the band's 50th anniversary.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctwo/programmes/schedules/england/2012/11/17

Note : The fact that the evening's programmes conclude with a screening of "Night Of The Living Dead" at 2.25 am is, I presume, merely a coincidence and not a cynical piece of scheduling.....  Smiley

I started crying during the scene when they show the singers doing the vocal arrangement for You Can't Always Get what you Want, right before they announce Brians death... I'm a bit tired today, but it still hit me very hard! Glad I was alone, it was a bit of a gasp, then some silent tears i was trying to fight back. Unexpected moment for me... Very cool too, glad I can feel so deeply something that I've known about most my life.
IMO and fwiw, great movie... This movie is good for die hards, causals and never knew much about them's...
have a great day... I'm going to go try to sweat out this bug or whatevr I seem to have eating my lunch!

I did not like that at all......almost all of the rare stuff is lurking around out here on the web. The live music was not sound synced......

if you enjoyed it good deal...but I will stick with the concert films and a few other documentaries which are more appealing to me.

Hubby and I watched it twice.  We both teared up when Mick was saying No Expectations was Brian's last real contribution to the band and then didn't realize how short a time it had been between Brian being fired and him dying.

All in all not a bad documentary, 25X5 was more detailed I thought.

I think some are missing Crossfire Hurricane's very objective here.

I personally know two film fans...one of em is a Stones fan... the other one just "appreciates" The Stones ...they took it differently than some of you are noting here.

Two of my friends who know movies and documentaries very well gave me their opinions...on why they thought it was great. I will share those opinions hopefully to shed some light on what The Stones were going for versus what some may of thought they got shorted on.

They noted that instead of CF "telling" the story of The Stones... they claim it put you IN the story. They both noted how it made you feel as if you were right there on the run with The Rolling Stones themselves. The objective of CF was not an academic history lesson on The Rolling Stones ... (although they said it told their story well enough) but was rather an "experience" as the viewer is placed right in the drivers seat along for the ride with The Stones throughout the crucial years of their existence.

That is the point of the film....to make you feel as though you are/went through everything with em. An exciting ride that places the viewer right in the front line with The Stones as my one buddy stated. THAT is why they chose this director. They did not want a total history lesson. They wanted a to tell the story as a thrilling ride so to speak and that, from my interpretation was what it was supposed to be.

My one buddy, who is a film maniac said it was how the film was directed but it did it subtlety, without it seeming purposeful, yet it was just as bold. He said it yet it made you feel like you rolled through the years right with em as a hangers on or something. He said he can't put his finger exactly how the film did it but it certainly did and as well he said it made you feel as though now you know the Stones ..."personally".... after watching it. He said it kind of made you say wow I am glad their OK. He also noted whether your a die-hard or a new-comer to The Stones catalog it is exciting and will immerse either today and down the road as well.

Now I have to view it. I do not have HBO and the night they watched it I had to work... however shortly I will give my assertions of the film.

Can't wait to see CH, the only thing with it from what I hear it only goes to the 80's where 25x5 was up to date at the time it was released which was Steel Wheels tour,  I too wish 25x5 will be released on DVD/Blu-Ray eventually.
