Outsanding show in Lake Tahoe thursday night. Ole Shakey is still a guitar God. Him and the Horse put on a clinic in old fashion jamming. None of the synth pop crap you hear nowadays. Jus tstrap it on and play. Not everubpdy cared for it I guess. Friday night I was sitting at a blackjack table and the lady next to me was complaining about the show. "He wasn't as good as he was with CSNY".....No grandma, that's a whole 'nother story. You rock!

Neil Young and Crazy Horse Double-Disc 'Psychedelic Pill' Due in October
Album is group's first collection of original songs since 2003

Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic

Neil Young and Crazy Horse's new LP Psychedelic Pill will hit store shelves sometime in October. According to an update on Young's official website, "a double-CD and triple-vinyl will be released because of the lengths of many of the songs, some of which were previewed in Crazy Horse's live performances earlier this month . . . A recommended high resolution 24/192 full fidelity version of the album Psychedelic Pill will be released on Blu-ray." The group will also release videos for each of the songs.

Crazy Horse guitarist Frank "Poncho" Sampedro told Rolling Stone about the new disc in June. "It's us jamming and having lots of fun," he said. "I think that [former Crazy Horse producer] David Briggs would be proud of it . . . Once he was gone, I felt like we lost our compass a bit. We had the sound and we had the big machine, and we could play anything and play pretty good, but we weren't putting any great records together. I mean, Broken Arrow was OK. It wasn't like Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere or Rust Never Sleeps or Ragged Glory."

Earlier this month the group launched their first tour in more than eight years. The setlist features six brand new songs, including the 20-minute feedback-drenched epic "Walk Like A Giant." "Neil came into the studio and he had that song," Sampedro said earlier this month. "We played it one time and the next thing we know we're doing overdubs. Then he played it for us. The playback just blew our minds. We had no idea we'd done something that big. I imagine it's about Earth being destroyed by this giant, and we're screening the planet for survivors and shit. I have all these images going through my head. It's really crazy."

The guitarist also spoke about the title track "Psychedelic Pill." "That song began in the studio when Neil sat down at the piano and began playing chords," Sampedro said. "Ralph [Molina] was on drums and he started this beat on the snare and wouldn't stop for nearly an hour. We stood up and played it and realized it was a great song. We just haven't performed it that great yet, but we're getting more comfortable every night."

Just three months ago Neil Young and Crazy Horse released the folk covers disc Americana. Surprisingly, they are only playing a single one of those songs, "Jesus' Chariot," during their live show this summer. "They just didn't fit in," Poncho said. "Somehow they really sound good when we play them together, but when we play them in a set they just didn't fit in. I told Neil that I thought it was a lot of fun playing them and they're great songs, but our soul and our hearts aren't in them."

The band is on a break right now, but the tour resumes in late September and runs through early December. They have yet to announce exactly when in October the new LP will be released.

Neil Young Opens Up About Sobriety
Rocker also discusses his new memoir, digital music format
...

Neil Young
Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic
By Rolling Stone
September 19, 2012 1:10 PM ET

Neil Young has been sober for a year after drinking and smoking pot for decades, he reveals in a new profile in the New York Times. During a recent interview at his sprawling home in the redwood forest south of San Francisco, Young speaks about writing his upcoming autobiography, Waging Heavy Peace, the many obsessions that have fueled his career and his decision to get clean.

"I did it for 40 years," he says. "Now I want to see what it's like to not do it. It's just a different perspective."

In the book, he elaborates: "The straighter I am, the more alert I am, the less I know myself and the harder it is to recognize myself. I need a little grounding in something and I am looking for it everywhere."

Yet the book – written despite Young's onetime declaration that he would never write a memoir – features some requisite tales of rock & roll excess. The 66-year-old recalls being arrested for drugs with Eric Clapton and Stephen Stills, and he jokes about David Crosby's legendary stash: "I still remember 'the mighty Cros' visiting the ranch in his van. That van was a rolling laboratory that made Jack Casady's briefcase look like chicken feed. Forget I said that! Was my mike on?"

Elsewhere, Young makes no apologies for the sometimes confounding career decisions he's made over the years. "I work for the muse," he tells the Times. "I'm not here to sell things. That's what other people do, I'm creating them. If it doesn't work out, I'm sorry; I'm just doing what I do. You hired me to do what I do, not what you do. As long as people don't tell me what to do, there will be no problem."

The guitarist talks about the projects that have consumed him lately, including designing an electric car he hopes to drive to the White House, making a movie on the way and writing another book, this one about all the cars he has owned.

Young also acknowledges that Pono, the proprietary music system he has developed as a high-quality alternative to MP3s, has been picked up by Warner Brothers for use with the company's back catalog of recordings, and that he and longtime manager Elliot Roberts are negotiating with other labels.

Young says he's thankful that Roberts has helped him make plenty of money over the years. "I spend it all," he said. "I like to employ people and make stuff. It will be my undoing.

NEIL YOUNG SAYS MUSIC IS TAKING ITS TOLL ON HIM
by: Sterling Whitaker Yesterday

...
Larry Busacca, Getty Images For The Recording Academy)

Neil Young once famously sang, “It’s better to burn out than to fade away” in ‘My My, Hey Hey,’ but the 66-year-old rocker isn’t doing either one just yet – despite his admission that continuing his touring career is getting harder as he grows older.

In a new interview with New York Times magazine to promote his upcoming autobiography, ‘Waging Heavy Peace,’ Young admits that after years of reluctance to write a book about himself, he undertook the task for two reasons: because he needed the money, and because he needed something to do after he broke his toe last year. “I don’t think I’m going to be able to continue to mainly be a musician forever, because physically I think it’s going to take its toll on me — it’s already starting to show up here and there,” he acknowledges.

Young has suffered a host of physical maladies, including epilepsy, serious back problems and an aneurysm. That hasn’t yet prevented the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer from working, most recently with his on-again, off-again spiritual partners, Crazy Horse. “We’ve got two new albums, so we’re not an oldies act, and we’re relevant because we’re playing these new songs, so that gives us something to stand on,” he says.

The guitarist has often taken a hit-and-miss approach to his career, walking away from profitable partnerships for the sake of artistic exploration and blowing vast sums of money carelessly to satisfy seemingly random whims, but his manager, Elliot Roberts, says he simply doesn’t care. “He has no problem with failure as long as he is doing work he is happy with,” Roberts observes. “Whether it ends up as a win or loss on a consumer level is not as much of an interest to him as one might think.”

Among Young’s varied non-musical pursuits are an electric car (which he not only wants to develop, but he also hopes to make a movie about the car and then drive it to the White House) and a new technology called Pono, which provides high-quality digital audio in a readily downloadable format. Young has already gotten Warner Brothers to sign their catalog for Pono, and is negotiating with other companies before unveiling the new system publicly. But he isn’t ready to give up on writing and performing music; he will release a new album with Crazy Horse titled ‘Psychedelic Pill’ on Oct. 30.

“At 65, it seems that I may not be at the peak of my rock ’n’ roll powers,” the grizzled musician admits. “But that is not for sure.”

'Waging Heavy Peace' is a memoir only Young could write: Honest, moving and kind of all over the place

"Generally the best feelings are the early takes," Neil Young remarks toward the end of his first ever memoir. "First or second takes, mostly." He's explaining his approach to recording with Crazy Horse, but he could just as easily be describing the loose, informal way he writes. Penned without a coauthor, Waging Heavy Peace often reads less like a traditional autobiography than a lively blog – full of casual asides, unpredictable tangents and open-ended questions as he looks back on his life at age 66.

Young appears to be setting down his memories in real time as they occur to him, touching in no particular order on his childhood in Ontario and Manitoba; his zig-zag path to stardom with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; a few failed relationships and one enduring marriage; assorted medical crises; and practically every car he's ever owned, among other subjects.

Young has never been one to linger on past glories, and career highs like the creation of On the Beach or "Ohio" tend to receive tantalizingly brief treatment before he wanders on to the next yarn. His free-associative riffing can feel a little repetitive when he launches into yet another chapter on digital sound quality – he sees cruddy MP3s as a crime against art – or restoring an old auto. Yet he can also be dryly hilarious, as when he feigns momentary confusion about who actually sang America's soundalike hit "A Horse With No Name": "Hey, wait a minute! Was that me? Okay. Fine. I am back now. That was close!"

By the book's final stretch, Young is in a somber mood, circling back with increasing frequency to the many friends and family members he's outlived. "Some folks think that is not a good thing to think about," he writes poignantly of death. "I envy the control they must have over their thinking processes. As you can tell, if you are still with me, I don't have much control over that." Young – who gave up booze and weed for the first time in decades before writing this book – is haunted by his late father's descent into dementia, and unsettled by the idea that he might end up the same way. "I am always getting scared that I will be in the middle of some long-winded story and forget what I'm talking about," he confesses, "and my secret that I am slowly losing my mind will be out."

Waging Heavy Peace shows that Young is still in full possession of that stubborn, brilliant, one-of-a-kind instrument. He doesn't always go exactly where you want him to, or stay long enough once he gets there, but did anyone really expect anything else? About the harshest criticism one could make is that he's already traced this story's outlines more eloquently, if less specifically, in timeless tunes from "Helpless" to "Harvest Moon." "I have been lucky and life has gifted me," Young writes. "I know who I am and what I've been part of . . . the music speaks when words can't."
