http://www.vhnd.com/2013/06/18/van-halen-kicks-off-japan-tour-in-nagoya/

Today (June 18th) Van Halen kicked off their Japan 2013 tour at the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium in Nagoya, Japan! (Showtime was 7PM in Japan, which was 3AM Pacific time)

This morning, Wolf tweeted, “Show day in Nagoya”, followed by ”We’re almost ready for ya, Nagoya. Just gotta tune up real quick… ” with the goofy photo above.

As far as the setlist, there were no huge surprises, but we are impressed that they beefed it up to a whopping 27 songs (including the drum and guitar solos) and that they added “Atomic Punk“, “Jamie’s Cryin’“and the must-have “Mean Street.” Also included were “Hear About It Later” and “The Trouble With Never”, which were not usually played last year. Of course, we would have loved it if they included alternate songs from A Different Kind Of Truth (check out our fan poll for the fan’s favorite songs from the new album…many of which haven’t been played), as well as alternate deep tracks like “Light Up The Sky” or “Drop Dead Legs”, both of which they soundchecked during last year’s North American tour. But we’re sure the fans in Japan were quite satisfied, as the show clocked in at two hours, twenty mintes(!), which is possibly the longest show the band has ever performed!

As an added bonus, Nagoya got treated to a viewing of Roth’s short film, “Tokyo Story” as the lead-in to “Ice Cream Man” instead of the ”Dog World” video.

Can we really refer to them as "ass-less leather chaps" if David Lee Roth is wearing them???

Sway, you gotta stay outta the pasture baby.

Van Freakin’ Halen Tokyo Dome :

(A review from mrC)

Well, I can die and go to heaven (?) now… I’ve finally, after being a fan for 30+ years, seen DLR and EVH together on stage at last… on a night when DLR was top form and in full control of 50,000 people in Tokyo Dome.

Dave was back on top, over the top, and back down again. Always a winner… King of the Hill.

Dave had something to prove as a recent resident of Tokyo …and he delivered in spades. As expected he was ‘the’ master showman… however this was special as he was able to use his recently learned Japanese language most effectively.

Dave, had special guests in the audience including sumo giant Konishiki who even starred with Dave in the mid-show 1970′s-Yakuza-style short film in which Dave could show off his new full-back tattoo on screen, a work of art which he’s been working on for nearly a full year here in Tokyo.

The 3 Van Halen family guys were rocking’ steady as always, played all the great songs for a full 2hr:15min. Alex was cool as a cucumber, lil nephew Wolfgang was solid as could be on bass… oh yeah… Ed has been “back” and consistent for the better part of a few years now.

He’s an inspiration to the rest of us guitar players for doing that voodoo he do so well… all so effortlessly.

Kiyo san had gotten us really good seats.. (well, the best I’ve had at a Tokyo Dome Show… but certainly nothing posh like Robert was able to swindle.  haha.

As you can see the light/video show supported the band which really didn’t need any support at all. They were ‘on’ tonight.

Surprise rare songs were: “I’m The One (Show Your Love)”, “Hear About It Later” and “Women in Love”.

The weather was pre-typhoon so it was really humid and raining the whole way to the show.. we all looked like a couple of soaked swamp rats by the end of the day but it was not what was in the forefront of our minds.

Kiyo ditched early… and Dan the man and I hooked up with Robert in Shinjuku Station for some eats and decompression. Thanks guys! The 30 year wait was worth it. My obituary will read: “he died a happy man”. (”,)b

Hagar, whose current bar band, THE CIRCLE, also includes for VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony, drummer Jason Bonham and Vic Johnson, continued: "Right now, I'm really happy. I can play any song I want and I can sing it and I can rock it, and I've got musicians that can do it, and me and Mikey [Michael Anthony] are having the time of our life."

He added: "My guess is, if you want me to make one prediction, I think that Michael Anthony will be back in that band because they really need to do that. If they’re going to serve the fans and ever do what the fans really want right now, if it's going to be Dave [Lee Roth], then it's gotta be Mike. too. It's gotta be the original band, and that's the way it should be. Nothing against Wolfie [current VAN HALEN bassist Wolfgang Van Halen] — I love the guy; he was a sweet kid. [He] grew up. I saw him when he was born, for God's sake — but they need to do that and my prediction is they will."

In a February 2013 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, VAN HALEN singer David Lee Roth spoke about the touchy subject of Anthony potentially replacing current bassist — and Eddie Van Halen's son — Wolfgang Van Halen. He said: "Ed has his own vision, I'm assuming. We haven't really been able to speak about it and it's a disappointment, just as not having a chance for a reunion of the original band. Clearly, vocals are every bit as much a component of success as a rhythm section or a guitar solo… What we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever — that was in Michael Anthony.
