I didn't want to hijack the EXILE threads...but the new Exile reissue has been (speculatively)  compared to Tattoo You, with respect to older matirial, worked over and over dubbed with fresh material, etc...

So...i know that TY was mainly older stuff redone...can i have a detail as to when the songs were originally from? What sessions, etc??? i know that SMU is from 1975...I totally LOVE that original reggae version aka  "Just Can't Stop"...'ere We Go!!!

sorry if this is old news...but i never really had this info before.

I don’t have Martin Elliott’ book to hand, but several of the songs date from the Goats Head Soup, Black & Blue and Some Girls sessions – Waiting on a Friend – featuring Mick T. on guitar, I believe – dates from ’72 or ’73.

So few details were available from these sessions but its been possible to establish the following with some degree of accuracy.

'Start Me Up' - First cut as a reggae track ( 'Never Stop' ) in 1975, redone as 'Start Me Up' for 'Some Girls' before reverting to a reggae arrangement again during the 'ER' sessions. In 1981, when going through old tapes, they decided to use the rock version. Its been often reported as coming from ER material from '79, but Chris Kimsey says its from around the same time as 'Miss You' which would date it as late '77. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr04/articles/classictracks.htm

'Hang Fire' - first cut as a 6-minute rocker ('Lazy Bitch') for 'Some Girls', the released version comes from 'Emotional Rescue' sessions in '79.

'Slave' - Backing track recorded Rotterdam early 1975, hence the inclusion of Billy Preston & Ollie Brown. Overdubs added in Paris late 1980 and then Sonny Rollins sax and Pete Townshend's backing vocals would have been added in New York in spring 1981.

'Little T & A' - Originally cut in Nassau early '79, the released take comes from Paris later that summer. 'Emotional Rescue' sessions.

'Black Limousine' - Originally cut for 'Some Girls'. Finished Paris '79 for ER.

'Neighbours' - a new song. Recorded late 1980 in Paris. Sonny Rollins' sax added in New York, spring '81.

'Worried About You' -  Basic track recorded early '75 in Rotterdam with Wayne Perkins on guitar. Overdubs added Paris summer 1979.

'Tops' - Basic track recorded either for GHS in late '72 (probably) or 'IORR' in late '73. Mick Taylor on lead guitar. Overdubs added Paris summer '79.

'Heaven' - A new track, recorded in Paris late 1980.

'No Use In Crying' - Paris, summer 1979

'Waiting on a Friend' - Basic track probably comes from Kingston late 72 (GHS sessions) although there's a school of thought it may come (or may have been first attempted) as early as 1970. Overdubs added in Paris late 1980 and then Rollins' sax would have been overdubbed in New York spring 1981.

As you can see from the article I've linked, Mick spent a month or so working on vocal overdubs for many of the songs with Chris Kimsey in a warehouse studio in Paris in spring 1981 (ie NOT Pathe Marconi) before the album got a few final overdubs and mixing in New York.

As Gazza said, Worried About You originated in '75.  Think I'm Going Mad was from '79, then finished in '82/'83.  Their pace is slightly different, but I can see how they are similar, using that common I-IV chord change (same key of C, too, I think).

I can hear the connection, now you mention it.

'Goin Mad' has a bit of a strange history.

First cut for 'Emotional Rescue' in the Bahamas in early 1979.

There are two bootleg versions from this session, using the same basic track that was eventually released.

Take 1 (6:41) - early vocals and different lyrics. No saxophone. Appears on bootleg Cds such as "All Mixed Up"

Take 2 (5:48) - Edited version of the same backing track, but with different vocals and this one has saxophone. Features on the bootleg "Static In The Attic"

Then there's another version recorded in Paris in late 1982 for "Undercover".....

Take 3 (14:11) - a very long version, with guide vocals by Keith. Strange that this version features Keith and is less developed than the earlier two versions. Maybe it's just a run through. Appears on the bootleg "Undercover Outtakes".

The released version (4:10) , which came out in January 1984 as the non-album B-side of "She Was Hot" is actually an edited version of the basic track cut in early 1979, but with new vocals and a different sax (played by David Sanborn) which were overdubbed in New York in summer 1983.  It's never been officially available in CD format (legend has it that the reason it was left off 'Rarities' was that the idiots who assembled the release couldnt locate the master tape) but it is available in CD format as a bonus track on the 4-CD bootleg release "The Complete Woodstock Tapes" (which is mostly taken from '78 tour rehearsals)

Thanks for the chronology, Gazza.

The sax player you're referring to is David Sanborn.
He also played on MJ's ''Primitive Cool'.

'Think I'm Going Mad' isn't on 'Pearls At Swine'.
It's on disc two of 'The Complete Woodstock Tapes'.

Duly edited. I knew his name and know what he looks like. Can't figure why the hell I said his first name was Robert instead of David.
