We're gonna play "Local Boy Chops Wood" the song Donovan composed for Brian

Help me with the meaning of "Chops wood" I read the meaning in the Urban Dictionary http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=chop+wood but had some doubts about the meaning in this song, here's the lyrics, the only part I need help is in the title LOL

He got weights on his shoulders
He got chains round his neck
'Fore he get very much older
He be a nervous wreck

Local Boy chops wood - Headline reads
Local Boy makes good - watch him bleed
Local Boy chops wood - what went wrong
Local Boy who made good wasn't too strong

He got plenty hangers on
To keep him happy and high
But deep down inside him
You can hear him cry

Local Boy chops wood - Headline reads
Local Boy makes good - watch him bleed
Local Boy chops wood - what went wrong
Local Boy who made good wasn't too strong

One riff of his guitar
Gonna change the whole scene
He's a rebel-romantic
With a Death-wish dream

Local Boy chops wood - Headline reads
Local Boy makes good - watch him bleed
Local Boy chops wood - what went wrong
Local Boy who made good wasn't too strong

He keep ice in his young veins
To cool the fires in his head
It'll take more than double brandy
To dry the tears he shed

Rock Star found dead - headline reads
Rock Star found dead - pictures need
Rock Star found dead - what went wrong
Rock Star found dead - wasn't too strong

Wasn't 17 the thread that was lost?

As for what "Chops Wood" means -- I never really knew what he meant by that!  Symbolism, I guess  Huh

Seeing that Donovan wrote it, mayhap it is Donovan who should be queried.

I just think that chops wood rhymes well with makes good and it was just something that popped into his noodle and that's that.  I spent years trying to figure out what the hell Crimson and Clover, over and over, meant until one day I just said, "Screw it! It is what it is - Crimson and Clover, over and over, and it was a big hit. Good on ya, Tommy." Butterflies and moonbeams and zebras.

OMG, that my card on Brian's grave--to the right, directly above the red flowers. Smiley My friend from Canada left it there a couple of weeks ago.....SO glad my card could be there, even though I can't.

40 years. Unbelievable. I remember it so well. He died on my boyfriend's birthday, and all I could say when he called long distance that night was "Brian Jones died on your birthday". Sad memories...Sad

The plastic container in front of the Spirit magazine is like a guest book kind of thing. My friend put something appropriate in it from me to Brian as well. That's what friends are for. Smiley

40 years ago today? Wow. Tempus fugit. My family made the big move out of the city 4 days later. Memorable summer. I'd never seen frogs before. We went to the local beach every day. No a/c in our rental house. Weknew things were changing but so many changes since then. RIP BJ...

Fans mark anniversary Rolling Stone Brian's death

Monday, July 06, 2009, 07:022
http://www.thisisgloucestershire.co.uk/gloucestershireheadlines/Fans-mark-annive...

FORTY years after his death, the spirit of Rolling Stone Brian Jones lives on, say his fans.
Followers of the founder and leader of the 'greatest rock and roll band in the world' congregated at Brian's grave at Bouncers Lane Cemetery, in Cheltenham, to mark the 40th ann- iversary of his death.
As well as his girlfriend and mother of his son, Pat Andrews, and ex-flatmate Ian Hattrell, there were devotees from Italy, Bulgaria and the USA.

Pat said: "It's brilliant to see so many people here for Brian. He really was the leader and founder of the Rolling Stones and he's sort of been written out of history.

"I wish more people in Cheltenham would be proud of him, I don't understand why they are not."
A large number of the 50 mourners would have been children when Brian died.

One fan, 37-year-old Brian Turnbull, from Whitburn in Scotland, wore a brocade jacket and a blond pudding bowl haircut like his idol.

He said: "When I was a kid I saw a picture of Brian on a record cover and I thought it was me. Since then I've felt a connection and the more I looked into his life the more I was impressed by his musical ability."

One of the enduring themes of visitors to the guitar player's grave is how important he was to the Rolling Stones and the music of the 1960s.

Mary Cupanow was visiting with her husband Joe from Mountainville in New York State.

Mary, 45 said: "It if wasn't for Brian we wouldn't have had the music of the Stones or the 60s. He was so important to it and his guitar playing was brilliant. I'm hoping to start a tribute band just playing Stones covers from the Brian era."

Jackie Baker, 60, from Up Hatherley was one of the few Cheltonians to be present at the grave, which was festooned with flowers and had Brian Jones picked out in yellow flowers, with 40 picked out in white.
She said: "I was always a Rolling Stones fan, but I was ashamed never to have come to the grave. I read about the 40th anniversary in the Echo and I thought I would come along."

Brian was born in Cheltenham on February 28, 1942. He left for London and, in 1962, founded the Rolling Stones. He was in the band until a month before his death in 1969, when he was discovered in the swimming pool of his home at Cotchford Farm in Sussex.

The Rolling Stone and Crich Trams

07 July 2009
By Laura Hammond
http://www.belpernews.co.uk/features/The-Rolling-Stone-and-Crich.5436079.jp

...
TRAMS PASSION: Rolling Stone Brian Jones is pictured right hard at work creating what is top top tourist attaction Crich Tramway Village. The guitarist who went on to achieve worldwide fame with the band died 40 years ago on Friday.

IT was 40 years ago on Friday that infamous Rolling Stone Brian Jones was found dead in the swimming pool at his Sussex home.

Mystery surrounds the life and death of the guitarist, with fans still debating whether he was murdered, he fell during an asthma attack, or if he died from a drink-fuelled overdose of recreational drugs.

In fact, many details remain scarce or unknown about 27-year-old's life, not least the musician's strong connection to Amber Valley.

As the anniversary of Jones's 1969 death arrives, Crich Tramway Village has revealed that he was one of the volunteers who helped to get the attraction off the ground in the early 1960s.

Jones joined others working on the derelict Cliff Quarry, which became the well-known museum.

Before going on to find worldwide fame with the rock band, fronted by Mick Jagger, Jones gave his up Sundays to the Crich project for almost two years, travelling from Cheltenham with friend John Appleby.

The duo were part of a ten-strong group of tram enthuisasts, members of the Tramway Museum Society, who travelled from Cheltenham to ride the vehicles in Sheffield and Leeds.

In a letter from April 1960, which is archived at the museum, a Leeds bus driver, who knew Jones, said: "An 18-year-old who came to Leeds with me last year says he will join 'when he can afford it''.

A spokesman for the museum said he belived the driver was referring to a young and penniless Jones.

The stint ended in 1962, when Jones moved to London to focus on the band.

In an obituary, Mr Appleby said at the time: "Even recently, he asked about the Crich trams and said he would like to come back one day. With his death the world lost a pop star, some of us lost a friend, and Crich lost its Rolling Stone."

Jones was discovered in his swimming pool on July 3, 1969, and was buried seven days later in Cheltenham.

Museum curator Glynn Wilton, said: "Brian Jones and all those volunteers who gave their time and effort in the early years at Crich provided the foundation for what we have today. Looking at today's magnificent museum, we owe a huge debt to those early volunteers who often travelled long distances in all seasons to help."

The musuem will celebrate its 50th birthday this year.

The Rolling Stones were formed 1962 in London when multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones and pianist Ian Stewart were joined by vocalist Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards. Bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts completed the early line-up.

Stewart, deemed unsuitable as a teen idol, was removed from the official lineup in 1963 but continued to work with the band as road manager and keyboardist until his death in 1985.

Early in the band's history, Jagger and Richards formed a songwriting partnership and gradually took over leadership of the band from Jones.

At first the group recorded mainly covers of American blues and R&B songs, but since the 1966 album Aftermath, their releases have mainly featured Jagger/Richards songs. Mick Taylor replaced Jones shortly before Jones's death in 1969.

Hits include Not Fade Away, Satisfaction, It's All Over Now and Little Red Rooster.
