“What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there,” he says. “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.” - Keef

McCartney returns to stage after hospitalization

Paul McCartney returned to a concert stage Saturday after being sidelined for two months because of a virus, spinning out songs from The Beatles, Wings and a solo career that has spanned more than 50 years of rock 'n' roll.

McCartney, who turned 72 two weeks ago, looked none the worse for wear. He made no immediate reference to his absence. One oblique reference could have been his performance of the song, "On My Way to Work," which he said he hadn't done live before.

He was briefly hospitalized in Tokyo in May because of the viral infection. The illness forced him to cancel a Japanese tour and a concert in South Korea and reschedule half a dozen June dates in the United States before resuming his "Out There" tour in Albany.

Before his illness, McCartney last performed May 1 in Costa Rica.

McCartney opened with the Beatles' "Eight Days a Week." He wore black jeans and a sky blue blazer. When he took the jacket off four songs in, he joked that it was the only wardrobe change of the evening.

He paid tribute to former songwriting partner John Lennon with the song "Here Today," which McCartney described as the conversation they never had. He also honored another late rock star, Jimi Hendrix, with an instrumental interlude of "Purple Haze."

McCartney's wife, Nancy, was on hand for the return. He dedicated his song "My Valentine" to her.

It's a busy year for McCartney, who marked the 50th anniversary of his first appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" this winter, which marked the beginning of Beatlemania in the United States. He has 19 U.S. shows scheduled, including one at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, where the Beatles made their final concert appearance in 1966.

The other surviving ex-Beatle, Ringo Starr, is also on the road this summer.

Paul played to a full house of 15,000 and the show started just before 8:30pm. The crowd did not warm up to the "NEW" songs and showed more enthusiasm for The Beatles songs.

A highlight of the show was "On My Way to Work". Paul said it was the first time they have played it, and that the crew and band didn't know he was going to play it!

Paul was brought out the vintage Epiphone Casino guitar originally played on "Paperback Writer" and explained about the whammy bar (tremolo) but jokingly called it a "vibrator arm."

The platform was again used for "Blackbird" and a girl screamed after the song. Paul mocked her scream and said, "Don't do that to me! Those days are gone!"

When he introduced "Something" he said, "George was a really good ukulele player and he was doing it before most people!"

"Another Day" was dedicated to Phil Ramon with Paul pointing up to the heavens.

Paul explained about the 'signs' and looked out into the audience and picked out an example. ''See what you have here..." (reads it) 'Will you sign my butt?' No!"

At the end of "Everybody Out There" Paul made a point to repeat the chorus at end of the song, because people were not singing the "Whoa - oh - oh-oh..." He finally got them to do it.

Paul did a survey of the audience. "So how many people here are Albanian?" (no reaction) "How many people here are from AL- bany?" (few cheers) "How many people are not from AL-bany?" (lots of cheers!) "OK, then, disregard the previous remark about being Albanian..."

Macca flubbed the first line of "Maybe I'm Amazed" and
a line in "Lovely Rita".
Paul had a realization when he introduced "Being From The Benefit of Mister Kite!" He said, "This next song is from the Sgt. Pepper album... 50 years? No! It can't be 50!"

Before "Live and Let Die" Paul briefly noodled on the piano. It seemed like there might have been a delay in getting things working for the song.

After "Yesterday" a couple from Rochester, NY, John and Claudio, were brought on stage. She had a sign that said, "He won't marry me until he meets you." And he had a sign that read, "I've Got The Ring I'm 64." After they both met Paul, Macca said, "I think if he sings 'When I'm 64'... she will say yes." So John sang "When I'm 64" with Paul playing backup. Then John and got down on one knee to propose and Claudia said "yes!" WATCH

At the end of the show, Paul took off the Epiphone guitar and placed it standing up on the stage and briefly held it with one finger on the headstock. John Hammel raced towards the guitar to catch it before it fell. He dove head first to rescue the guitar and barely stopped himself from flipping over as he landed on both hands with one leg in the air. Paul watched in horror with both hands on his head and then covered his mouth, in shock, clearly upset. After Hammel picked up the guitar Paul immediately gave him an apologetic hug and held him close. Hammel gave Paul a mock dirty look. Paul walked with his arm around Hammel and no doubt was apologizing to him. When the band took their bows, Rusty looked at Paul like "what just happened?" and Paul gestured, "Yeah it was my fault."

Times Union Center - Albany, NY Sound Check

On Friday July 4th, Paul and band had a sound check at the Times Union Center in the late afternoon.

Today Paul arrived with a police escort in a black SUV at the Times Union Center around 5:30 pm. There were 200 + fans waiting. Macca was on the right side of the car and waved to fans from an open window. He was wearing a dark blue shirt and dark sunglasses. Many fans were holding up signs and he clearly was reading them as the car entourage sped by.

He started the sound check soon after arriving which lasted just under an hour.

Abe welcomed the crowd with "Welcome to Paulbany!"

Paul brought out the Epiphone Texan acoustic that he used on Ed Sullivan show and that said it was tuned down. So when he played G the rest of the band played F (just like on the Anthology 2 CD where he explains it to George). He didn't play "Yesterday" at the sound check.

He also brought out the Gibson 12-string acoustic and told Pablo (soundman) "this is the new 12-string" and the crowd cheered and he said, "You don't have to cheer for the 12-string.... Oh let's hear it for the 12-string!" And He mugged it up for 12-string.

Paul didn't read any signs out loud and no one got on stage during or after soundcheck.

There was a veggie buffet and the appetizers were good. The room was a little crowded and had just one bathroom, but VIP staff were accommodating.

" Paul McCartney, Warren Buffett sighted in Dundee   "

" Paul McCartney was spotted with Omaha billionaire Warren Buffett in Dundee on Sunday night having dinner, dessert and a walk around the neighborhood.

The two had dinner at Avoli, an Italian restaurant on Underwood Avenue. Dario Schicke, chef and owner, said there were five people in the group, including Susan Buffett, Warren’s daughter. Schicke said they arrived at 7 p.m. and left around 9:30 p.m.

“We had a special dish — gluten-free pasta for Paul ... Sir Paul,” Schicke said, adding that the group had “some appetizers and sorbetto afterward.”

He said customers were snapping lots of pictures, as did Schicke.

“I did sneak in a couple photos for my daughters,” he said.

After dinner, the group went up the street to eCreamery.

McCartney, who arrived in a limo, had two scoops of eCreamery vanilla, said clerk Josh Ryan. The shop’s vanilla ice cream recently was named best in Omaha in The World-Herald’s Food Prowl feature.

The pair stayed at the shop for about 15 minutes, Ryan said.

He said he was excited to wait on McCartney, who’s scheduled to perform tonight at Lincoln’s Pinnacle Bank Arena.

“I couldn’t breathe,” Ryan said. “It was awesome.”

He said McCartney was “very polite and super nice.”

Jeff French, a psychology professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, was in line at eCreamery behind the former Beatle and the Omaha billionaire. French saw McCartney in concert 24 years ago in Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, where Sunday’s World Cup Final was played.

“On the way out, I made eye contact and initiated conversation with him,” French said. “I reminded him that the first half of the concert in Brazil was all Wings songs, and everyone sat politely. The second half was all Beatles tunes, and everyone in the crowd was singing along, every word. It was a spectacular concert.”

French would agree with Ryan about McCartney’s manners.

“He deserves to be called ‘Sir’ because he’s nothing but polite.”

The group went across the street to sit on a bench and enjoy their ice cream, French said. About 50 people had gathered outside the ice cream shop, but French said it was a casual Omaha crowd that applauded when the group left.

Onlookers got photos of McCartney in the limousine in front of the shop. People also gathered and took group photos in front of eCreamery after McCartney left.

Many passers-by tweeted their sightings — much as people did 4½ years ago, when U2’s Bono made a surprise visit to the Dundee Dell.

Tom Becka, an Omaha radio personality, tweeted a picture of McCartney eating his ice cream. By midnight, it had tallied nearly 200 retweets and a similar number of favorites.   "

http://www.omaha.com/go/they-loved-him-yeah-yeah-yeah-go-wild-for-paul/article_e...

" They loved him, yeah, yeah, yeah: 11,000 go wild for Paul McCartney during epic concert  "

" LINCOLN — Paul McCartney is pop music’s most enduring songwriter.

And he’s probably its best. Everyone that saw him Monday night could tell you that. He brought unforgettable moments to life as he sat behind a piano and sang “Let It Be” and when he leaned out into the crowd and showed us that “Hey Jude” is the greatest singalong song of all time.

In front of a sold-out audience of more than 11,000 — young and old, kids and 20-somethings, original Beatles fans and newcomers, too — McCartney reached deep down into his cavernous catalog to play 39 songs during an epic-length, three-hour concert at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The Beatles. Wings. Paul McCartney.

They were all there Monday night when Sir Paul brought their songs to life.

With a voice as clear as the air and musicianship enhanced (not hindered) by his age and experience, the 72-year-old is as good a performer as ever. He hit the high notes. He played the bass (and five other instruments) with absolute precision. He entertained with stories of old pal Jimi Hendrix and bandmate George Harrison.

McCartney’s finale was a microcosm of what makes him a legend. He finished the show with the three final pieces of “Abbey Road” including “Golden Slumbers,” “Carry That Weight” and “The End.”

In that five-minute span, McCartney sang a beautiful ballad and ripped out a guitar solo. He instigated a singalong and had his fans, at other times, standing in reverent silence. He made us move our feet and made us feel moved.

This is a guy who can write childlike pop singalongs such as “All Together Now” and quirky love songs like “Lovely Rita” and then perform them back-to-back.

There were big rockers and light ballads, slow strums and fast guitar runs, hard rock and easy pop.

McCartney paid tribute to both John Lennon (“Here Today”) and George Harrison (“Something”). Along with all the songs by the Beatles, he dipped into material from his solo career as well as the best tunes by Wings.

The amassed thousands cheered him through it all, and McCartney took many moments to bask in it.

Before the show, fans streamed in from the Haymarket. They sipped beers in the Railyard. They greeted old friends on R Street, which was rechristened Abbey Road by the city for the occasion.

Inside the arena, they formed a mob around merchandise booths. They sported Beatles T-shirts, signs professing love for Sir Paul and shirts emblazoned with McCartney’s face.

As he sang “We Can Work It Out” and “Lady Madonna,” McCartney was greeted with the thunder of thousands of voices singing the words right back to him.

“Hey Lincoln, I have a feeling we’re gonna have a little bit of fun in this big room tonight,” he said.

Halfway through the extensive set, it seemed like we already got so much from McCartney. But the latter half cranked up the energy with a mix of rock songs and the most popular songs from the Beatles and Wings.

After a pair of upbeat, poppy tunes from McCartney’s latest album, he launched into a litany of Beatles songs that included “Eleanor Rigby,” “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!” “Something” and “Obla Di Obla Da.”

Then he did Wings’ best tunes including “Band on the Run” and “Live and Let Die” before finishing strong with his most enduring tunes.

McCartney said the crowd’s singing was “real sweet” during “Hey Jude,” and he cranked up the guitars for “Day Tripper, “Hi Hi Hi” and “I Saw Her Standing There.”

“I told you we were gonna have some fun,” McCartney said amid screams, shouts and enough applause to interrupt one of his many tales of rock stardom.

“Yesterday” brought out the singers, “Helter Skelter” brought on the rockers and the final medley from “Abbey Road” brought out all of McCartney’s best songwriting, singing and playing.

It was an unforgettable night for fans, who shouted their love for McCartney even as he exited the stage. With a legend playing such legendary songs, it was hard to hold in all that joy.  "

August 3, 2014 -- Paul McCartney Twitter

Macca's shout out to Minneapolis

@PaulMcCartney - Minneapolis! Unbelievable!

August 3, 2014 -- Star Tribune

Paul McCartney: A fun day's night

An ever-youthful Paul McCartney packed nearly 40 songs nearly three hours.

When we met the Beatles, he was the cute one. Now when we are probably saying goodbye (or hello, from the young 'uns), he is the joyful one, the generous one, the ageless one.

In a marathon performance on Saturday at Target Field, Paul McCartney, 72, celebrated one of the richest legacies in the history of popular music. He may not have been as jittery as Jagger or as sweaty as Springsteen. But do they deliver 39 songs over nearly three hours? No, the Stones give you the satisfaction of 19 songs and the Boss might work in 27 or so selections.

Unlike Springsteen or Bob Dylan, Sir Paul doesn't really reimagine his songs. He simply recreated them to service his masses and their collective nostalgia. So what if his voice sounded strained from time to time on Saturday? He could work it out with an unstoppable spirit, a crackerjack band and a repertoire that was pretty unimpeachable (thankfully, no "Silly Love Songs" or "Ebony and Ivory").

Paul's personality has always been able to save him, whether a quick quip, a mugging pose with that face or a raising of his guitar, thumb or arms at the end of many a song. He wouldn't have exactly won awards for best patter at a concert. "This is great. This is cool," he said before "And I Love Her." "What good vibrations."

But, with his bangs blowin' in the wind and those skinny jeans that could have been plucked from his Carnaby Street-filled closet, McCartney reminded fans both young and old why his skill set has set him apart: His gift for melody, harmony and hooks, his flair for writing simple but sincere little love songs and his joy of performing.

While Springsteen may have a sense of purpose and Dylan just carries on like a cranky old minstrel, perpetually boyish Sir Paul plays for the sheer love of performing. It was even apparent on "Here Today," his 1982 tribute to John Lennon. His throat sounded hoarse when he introduced it Saturday, explaining it was the conversation he never got to have with his ex-mate. But then, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, his solo vocal performance was so heartfelt, so pure, so true - even the falsetto ending.

Without missing a beat, McCartney sashayed to the upright piano for the hopelessly buoyant "New," the title track of his 2013 album. Without any sense of hard-sell for the new disc, he offered a four-song sampler of "New."

The taste of Wings, McCartney's second band, came early, with "Listen to What the Man Said," 1974's "Nineteen Hundred and Eight-Five" and "Let Me Roll It," which was followed by an instrumental version of Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady" and a story about Hendrix playing "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" in concert two days after it was released - with John, Paul and Eric Clapton in the audience. It didn't matter McCartney had told that story in concert here before.

That Hendrix journey was about it for instrumental fireworks from Sir Paul, who is not big on guitar flash for either himself (he also played bass and piano) or his two sidemen. There was plenty of fireworks, literally, for Wings' "Live and Let Die," whose flame throwers, lasers and explosions were a cut below your average Kiss concert. As for other visual ads, there were shots of pulp book covers on giant video screens during "Paperback Writer" and, oddly, a photo of Anne Frank during "Lady Madonna." And of, course, there were plenty of video closeups of Sir Paul, who belies his age whether because of diet, makeup or show-biz tricks.

In McCartney's sixth Twin Cities performance in six decades, it was still the Beatles numbers that generated the biggest cheers from the crowd. There were some rarities, including "Lovely Rita" and the Lennon-identified "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite," which were never in the live repertoire. Even the opening "Eight Days a Week" hadn't been on a McCartney concert set list since the 1964.

Buoyed by the muscular drumming and crucial vocals of Abe Laboriel Jr., McCartney rocked out on the crisp and punchy "Hi Hi Hi," the jagged "Helter Skelter" and the rip-roaring "Back in the U.S.S.R." (introduced by the singer's impersonation of two Russian government officials when they met the Beatles). When Paul "Wix" Wickens' synthesized strings arrived in the middle of a heretofore solo acoustic "Yesterday," they diluted the power of Paul's biggest song. But all was good with the closing medley of "Golden Slumbers," "Carry the Weight" and "In the End," and who will ever forget the giant sing-alongs on "Get Back" and "Hey Jude," when 39,000 fans waved their hands bellowing the "na, na, na's" in what ranks as one of rock's those cherished goose-bump moments in concert right up there with waving your arms to Prince's "Purple Rain" and pumping your fist to Springsteen's "Born To Run."

And, in the end, McCartney declared, "We'll see you next summer." (???!!!) Get back, indeed.

McCartney fans' common refrain: All we need is Paul

Saturday night's concert at Target Field struck a chord with fans who described Sir Paul as a "constant thread" in their lives.

And in the end, the love Paul McCartney took from his nearly three-hour concert Saturday at Target Field was equal to the adulation at July's All-Star Game and any other event the Twins' four-year-old ballpark has seen.

"He's a sure home run," said Tom Degannaro of Lino Lakes, a lifelong fan who - along with his wife and teenage daughter - was among the first of the roughly 40,000 concert attendees to arrive to the stadium. "It's about time he played another outdoor show here again."

The last time McCartney performed outside in Minnesota was when his old group the Beatles - ever heard of them? - tried to play over screaming teenage fans at Met Stadium in Bloomington in 1965.

Hardly just a baby boomer act, Sir Paul is still drawing teen fans to his shows, but under remarkably different circumstances. Gavin Bunnell of New Prague, 14, discovered his music when he received the video game "Beatles: Rock Band" for his 12th birthday.

"By the end of the first day of playing it, I was just obsessed with every one of the songs," said Bunnell, attending his first-ever concert. Quipped his mom Amy Hovel, "Nothing like starting out big."

Last seen in town at Xcel Energy Center in 2005 - his local average is just over one show per decade, with six concerts total now - McCartney was the first, major rock act to play Target Field, after two sold-out shows by country star Kenny Chesney and the smaller Skyline Music Fest. He is also now the only rocker to perform at all three of the Twins' ballparks, counting a solo show at the Metrodome in 1993.

McCartney, 72, took the giant stage in center field wearing a bright blue suit that looked more Brewers than Twins team colors, but it didn't stay on long anyway.

"That's my only wardrobe change of the night," he cracked after removing the jacket a few songs into his set, which opened with "Eight Days a Week." Within the first half-hour, he covered three of the five decades of his career, also including "All My Loving," the "Wings"-era rocker "Let Me Roll It" and his topical new song "Save Us."

During his sound check around 5 p.m. - which drew an early crowd that listened from outside the gates to the likes of "Drive My Car" and "Matchbox" - he also alluded to the muggy weather. "Turn down the heat," was his only instruction to his crew.

While there were no complaints about McCartney from fans during the show, things did get heated over the long lines to get through Target Field's new metal detectors - and even longer lines to get to the field, where a special wristband had to be handed out one-by-one.

"I'm fuming, when I should be all Beatles-y peace and love," complained Nancy Frank of St. Paul, who said it took her group nearly an hour to finally make it to their seat.

At least she got in. Hundreds of fans stood outside the gates listening to the show there, many of whom struck out trying to score a cheap last-minute ticket. Originally priced $36.50 to $250, seats were averaging above $250 at the resale site Stubhub.com earlier in the day.

Now the Twins grounds crew is wondering what price the playing field paid. About 8,000 seats were spread out on rubber padding laid over the grass.

"It's been a much better process than the last couple," said Twins groundskeeper Larry DeVito, referring to the Chesney concerts. However, DeVito's crew will have pulled off a quicker turnaround, since the Twins have an interleague game Tuesday against the Padres. "It's about as tight as we can do it, but I think we'll do fine," DeVito said.

Hardly concerned about the condition of the grass, super-Macca fan Amanda Wirig, 34, of Mankato, said she's worried the concert could be the rock legend's last time in Minnesota, given the age and the infrequency of his prior appearances.

"He's just been a constant thread in my life," said Wirig, echoing another fan's sign that caught McCartney's eye near the stage read, "I've been growing with you for 50 years."

Said Angie McCluskey, 58, of St. Cloud, who has seen him perform five previous times, "It just doesn't get any bigger than this, and probably never will."
