Another month, another box set. For the third December in a row, Sony have chosen to release a limited 'Copyright Extension Collection' to extend the European 50-year copyright on Dylan recordings which would have otherwise passed into public domain at the end of the year.

This year's collection consists of the 1964 recordings, which are now available on a very limited run (1,000 copies) as a 9-LP vinyl box set. Badlands in the UK have it for about £100.

5. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right (4:21)
All songs written by Bob Dylan, unless otherwise noted.

Most of this has circulated on bootlegs and the San Jose and Philly shows in (quite mediocre, and in the case of the Philly show, barely listenable) audience recordings. The real finds are the previously uncirculated session at Eric von Schmidt's home and especially the Royal Festival hall gig. A couple of songs were in circulation, but the full show has never been widely circulated or bootlegged

Now if this series extends into 1965 and 1966, it could get really serious...

November - Basement tapes 6-Cd box set - check
Lost On the River CD of covers of unused Basement Tapes lyrics - check
December - 9-LP Copyright Extension Collection, 1964 - check

and finally, now we're getting the album of Sinatra covers in a few weeks....

Columbia Records announced today that Bob Dylan's new studio album, Shadows In The Night, will be released on February 3, 2015. Featuring ten tracks, the Jack Frost-produced album is the 36th studio set from Bob Dylan and marks the first new music from the artist since 2012’s worldwide hit Tempest.

Upon Columbia’s announcement of the album’s forthcoming release, Bob Dylan commented, “It was a real privilege to make this album. I've wanted to do something like this for a long time but was never brave enough to approach 30-piece complicated arrangements and refine them down for a 5-piece band. That's the key to all these performances. We knew these songs extremely well. It was all done live. Maybe one or two takes. No overdubbing. No vocal booths. No headphones. No separate tracking, and, for the most part, mixed as it was recorded. I don't see myself as covering these songs in any way. They've been covered enough. Buried, as a matter a fact. What me and my band are basically doing is uncovering them. Lifting them out of the grave and bringing them into the light of day.”

As Columba Records Chairman Rob Stringer explains, “There are no strings, obvious horns, background vocals or other such devices often found on albums that feature standard ballads. Instead, Bob has managed to find a way to infuse these songs with new life and contemporary relevance. It is a brilliant record and we are extremely excited to be presenting it to the world very soon.”

SHADOWS IN THE NIGHT TRACK LISTING:

1. I'm A Fool To Want You
2. The Night We Called It A Day
3. Stay With Me
4. Autumn Leaves
5. Why Try to Change Me Now
6. Some Enchanted Evening
7. Full Moon And Empty Arms
8. Where Are You?
9. What'll I Do
10. That Lucky Old Sun
Shadows In The Night is available now for pre-order on iTunes and Amazon.

For the very first time, I have, since I added a number of tracks from The Bootleg Series, vol. 11, more Dylan tracks on my Ipod than Stones tracks. I guess, reading the news above, the number of Dylan tracks will increase in the months/ years to come. It's a pitty that this probably won't be the case with the number of Stones tracks.

I would go with Highway 61 at the top.

One thing that stands out. There are some really bad album covers in here.

The 80's was a bad decade in general for rock n roll, clothes, hair, production and album covers.

I can only assume from all of the above that it was a bad decade for cocaine as well.

I'd largely agree with that top 12(with the running order changed to have Blood - Blonde - Highway 61 - BIABH as the top four)with Nashville Skyline and Another Side replaced by Street Legal and Oh Mercy.

The bottom five are spot on, but "Shot of Love" should be considerably higher.

I've still never been able to listen to "Christmas in the Heart" the whole way through.

I quite enjoy 'Christmas In the Heart'; Bob clearly has a great feeling and love for these olde tunes (and Must Be Santa rocks like a mofo). As for his voice - I'm a huge Tom Waits fan anyway, and not just to be heretical or contrary, but my top three Zimmy albums these days are Love and Theft, Tempest, and then Modern Times.
OK, so I'm weird, so sue me. Bob's weird too. Sue him as well!

I'm enjoying what Ive heard of the new record more than I thought I would. The croak Bob has had for the last few years seems to have magically disappeared

The vocal changes are best summed up by two posts over on expectingrain.com

"Some doctor in LA must have 30 pounds of rusty throat polyps in his backyard", and another with a nice reference to Bob's recent side project :

"maybe he'll sculpt a gate with all the scrap metal that was removed from his throat"

Well, listened to "Shadows in the Night" a couple of times, but I already know. This will never grow on me. It takes me back to those dull late fifties, early sixties, yes I'm that old. Those awfull dull years, where nothing happened for young kids were the very reason why rock 'n' roll grew so big, and all that dullness comes back to me with this album. Besides that, Sinatra had so much beautiful songs. Why didn't Bob do "When I was seventeen" for example. Such a beautiful song, that he could have done miracles with imo. No, this one I pass.

I love this new album Tumbling Dijs, but I was born in 1973 so I can't smell the 'spruitjeslucht' that probably accompanies your memories of the 50's. I really enjoy good album full of crooners from time to time and Bob did a fine job with this one IMO.

Haha Teiz, LOL. Now you must try to explain to the boys and girls here what 'spruitjeslucht' means. But that being said, I do think he should have picked other songs. There are plenty. But hey, that's just my opinion.

http://www.startribune.com/what-will-bob-dylan-s-last-song-on-letterman-show-be/...

It was announced Friday that Minnesota's own Bob Dylan will perform Tuesday, May 19, on the next-to-last episode of "The Late Show With David Letterman." It's his first appearance on the show since 1993. He did the "Late Night" program twice, including a prime-time special where he did "Like a Rolling Stone."

So what will he perform during this historical appearance? Dylan has been sticking by a fairly steady set this past year, barely digging into his classics, but he may mix it up for the occasion. We asked staff members their predictions:

Rohan Preston, theatre critic: ""Mr. Tambourine Man" (I like the' play one more for me' line)

Chris Riemenschneider, music critic: He's been ending his shows of late with 'Stay With Me' which is actually perfect for the occassion. (Excellent choice, although perhaps a bit of a let down)

Tim Campbell, A&E editor: agress it will be a Sinatra tune.

Jon Bream, music critic: Thinks 'Forever Young' is too obvious and sentimental. He's betting on "Blowin' in the Wind' because it works on so many levels.

Neal Justin, TV critic: Color me sentimental.I'm going with Forever Young.

You can find out for yourself what he chooses on Tuesday with special guest Bill Murray.

On a long shot, Tangled up...as I have read it is one of Dave favorite of any artist.

Also a staple on the current tour leg

On a sentimental note it could be Workingman's Blues #2...also a staple

Wow. That was an amazing performance of a perfect song.  For those who missed it, it was an achingly beautiful rendition of "The Night They Called It A Day".

Damn.

I tried Dylan on in 1979,spat it out. Tried again in the 80s still couldn't get into it. Still trying. It must be that nasal twang in the voice. Mind you, he really is a great songwriter.
