Handy Dandy

First Release

Under the Red Sky
1990

Handy dandy, controversy surrounds him
He been around the world and back again
Something in the moonlight still hounds him
Handy dandy, just like sugar and candy

Handy dandy, if every bone in his body was broken he would never admit it
He got an all girl orchestra and when he says
"Strike up the band", they hit it
Handy dandy, handy dandy

Bridge #1:
You say, "What are ya made of?"
He says, "Can you repeat what you said?"
You'll say, "What are you afraid of?"
He'll say, "Nothin' neither 'live nor dead."

Handy dandy, he got a stick in his hand and a pocket full of money
He says, "Darling, tell me the truth, how much time I got?"
She says, "You got all the time in the world, honey."
Handy dandy, Handy dandy

Bridge #2:
He's got that clear crystal fountain
He's got that soft silky skin
He's got that fortress on the mountain
With no doors, no windows, no thieves can break in

Handy dandy, sitting with a girl named Nancy in a garden feelin' kind of lazy
He says, "Ya want a gun? I'll give you one." She says, "Boy, you talking crazy."
Handy dandy, just like sugar and candy
Handy dandy, pour him another brandy

Handy dandy, he got a basket of flowers and a bag full or sorrow
He finishes his drink, he gets up from the table he says,
"Okay, boys, I'll see you tomorrow."
Handy dandy, handy dandy, just like sugar and candy
Handy dandy, just like sugar and candy

Some news on the upcoming Bootleg Series Vol. 8 AND rumours of a new studio album

(source : Desolation Row mailing list)

Some Album News

Sources tell me that the new Bootleg Series album (No. 8) will be released in Europe on September 8th, to be followed on the 19th by the re-release of 15 old albums in papersleeve form; ten of these will be newly re-mastered. More “horse’s mouth” information to follow soon.

But here’s what little we know so far. The following have been mooted as being part of this 2 CD set since the beginning of the month and there are more treats to be revealed -

Dignity (piano demo)
God Knows (piano demo)
Various other Oh Mercy out-takes
TV Talking Song (original version)
Polly Vaughn (Bromberg sessions)
Rise Again (Bromberg sessions)
32-20 Blues (World Gone Wrong/Good As I Have Been To You)
Girl From The Red River Shore
Shake Sugaree (out-take from TOOM)
Mississippi (out-take from TOOM)
'Cross The Green Mountain (complete version)
Various Modern Times demos

Later this month there was an article in a Dutch newspaper by someone who had supposedly heard the album and had this to say – translation taken from an Expecting Rain discussion board –

Jeff Rosen gave Sony permission to choose material for a chronological double album out of no less than fifty unreleased songs. The result is baffling: more than fifteen tracks are brand new, four sound better in their alternate takes than in the original, and some obscure covers tell a lot about Dylan the transmitter of folk roots.

The Bootleg Series 8 starts with five outtakes from the Oh mercy sessions. ... What we didn’t hear on the album as it was released are the solo piano versions of unreleased songs like ‘Dignity’ and ‘God knows’. Dylan sounds particularly concentrated and relaxed.
The follow up Under the red sky was marred by a cold Dan Was production, but it was Dylan who convinced Was not to release some much better takes on known material. For instance the original version of ‘TV Talking Song’ now sounds like a caustic protest song.
More fascinating still is an entirely unreleased studio album from 1992. ... Bromberg ... project blown off ... Yet gospel tinged tracks like ‘Polly Vaughn’ and ‘Rise Again’ show an utterly enthusiastic performer ...

... Good as I been to you... World gone wrong. Some of the (incomprehensibly) left off songs from these two albums are on the new Bootleg Series, among which a heart-rending interpretation of Robert Johnson’s ‘32.20 Blues’.

... Second CD of BS8, the highlight ... starts of with legendary Time out of mind sessions. ... ‘Girl from the red river shore’ is probably the most impressive Dylan has written in recent years. The ghost ballad is an epical track in which Jim Dickinson and Duke Robillard harshly try to counter Dylans hallucinating ghost voice. During repetitions Dylan also unearthed a modest version of Elisabeth Cottons ’Shake Sugaree’. And this Bootleg Series also brings for the first time the original and much better take of the epical ‘Mississippi’.

... The complete version of ‘Cross the green mountain’. Lastly two demo’s of ‘Modern times’ that prove how driven and precise Dylan is in the studio these days.

And this was in Tuesday’s Daily Telegraph, Neil McCormick writing -

Bob Dylan has a new album ready for release. This represents an almost unheard of turnaround for the legendary old curmudgeon in his latter period. There has been four or five years between each of his last four albums, the most recent being the much acclaimed ‘Modern Times’ just two years ago. More than this, I cannot tell you. It could be a masterpiece or another one of his strange cast offs, like his 1990 nursery rhyme album ‘Under A Red Sky' or 1986 album of sloppy rock and roll cover versions ‘Knocked Out Loaded' (the clue to its quality was right there in the title). But Dylan seems to have re-engaged with his art in the past ten years and so there is every cause for hope. All I know for sure is that in some windowless room deep in the bowels of SonyBMG in London (quite possibly surrounded by armed guards) executives are locked in listening to playbacks while management discuss what to do with it...

Do you happen to know if they are opening for any of these shows:
Tulsa
Kansas City
Snowmass
Park City
Las Vegas
Temecula>  You rock! We JUST got in yesterday for the Temecula show; center section row B reats 101 and 102!!!  I am in shock...and THRILLED beyond words. Smiley Also, for some unknown reason we had to buy 4 tickets to get the presale promotion?!?  So, we have 2 tickets to sell in row B seats 1-3. they are superb!  If anyone is interested (Gary? Meg?! Joey?! LOL) please PM me!  This venue is only 1200 capacity all reserved state of the art acoustics sans a balcony.  I plan to politely stare straight into Bob's eyes!
Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed!

Tonight Stevie Wonder @ Fiddler's green FRONT ROW center!!!! Fuck you Gazza, Will ya?

After getting my Rolling Stone magazine on the 30th, I knew Bob would start playing "Maggie's Farm" again. You GO Bob!

I wonder how it was played?  Gosh I can't wait to see him!

GTRM I am seeing (@ Pagel's) The Joint in Vegas as the venue, on the 1st, but you see another venue.  I plan to attend so I need to be sure!  Thanks for the info!

I checked into the Pitt show.  This festival is mostly college bands.  But, it is going on with the South Side Summer Streert Spectacular, so even if you don't want to see the college bands , plenty to do.  The Streets of the South Side are closed down for a huge party.  Plenty of drink and ethnic foods.  Then after all the young bands are finished, head back to see Dylan.  Can't beat the cost of the ticket also.

I'll be there.  Maybe even ride my new Harley dawntahn.
