For the gals (and guys if you wish): girl groups

CLASSIC girl groups, that is.

Are you a shirelle, a ronette, an angel, or a shangri-la?
for me, the shangri-las were the ultimate girl group...
although i loved the music of the shirelles, ronettes etc...
the shangs were the real deal for the non-girly-girl set.
first, just the music: i can't claim mary weiss was a 'great singer' like ronnie spector - but she was raw and unfiltered...
i always loved the melodrama of Leader of the Pack or Walking in the Sand as a kid, but later grew to really appreciate the SOUND of the production - the heavy thud of the piano and drum, the wispy and un-polished lead vocals...the backup sing-talking...
the shirelles were sweet, while the ronettes were too buried in spector's wall of clutter -
but those old shang songs were pop masterpieces of melodrama: death, desparation - and all sung by a group of 15 and 16 year olds from the wrong side of the tracks in queens, n.y...
they had real attitude -
carrying guns on tour, kidnapping an overzealous male fan in their hotel room - and wearing real leather pants from the men's rack....
they never did the oldies circuit - just a one-off reunion gig at cbgb's in the mid 70s....
and then vanished again. (mary weiss recently released a punk-inspired new cd - haven't heard it because i don't want to be dissapointed)
anyway, as a boot-wearing, black-jean girl myself, the shangri-las were the real thing for me in the realm of 'girl groups.

Being a boot-wearing, black-jean girl myself, I'd have to agree. The Shangri-Las were the real deal.

LOVE the Shangri-Las! "{Remember} Walking In The Sand" is the ultimate in teenage girl angst...

Love Ronnie Spector too. I, unlike some of you ?, loved Phil Spector's Wall Of Sound.

Also love Darlene Love, who sang for a few bands--the best being the Crystals. Gene Pitney's "He's A Rebel" is a SLAMMIN' song...

I don't dislike the wall of sound -
i LOVE the 'sound' of 'then he kissed me'
that was spector right?
that's a great song and i can't deny that he wasn't a pioneer..
but alot of it was too busy for me - the timpani, three drums, four basses etc..all that space filled to the ceiling.....in the shadow morton/shangri-las productions - that space was left empty to create a more haunting sound.....
but spector was definately a creative force/

Yep, "And Then He Kissed Me" was Spector. I know what you mean. Both were great sounds in the early 60's, when a lot of the "pop"/rock music was tepid and bland {Can you say Bobby Vinton??? Puke all over me (wait that is BLEED)} The girl groups often saved the day.... Cool

Don't be scared - it's a really good record.

It's not really all that "punk inspired".  It's actually pretty easy on the ears.  Most of the songs were written by a Memphis musician named Greg Cartwright, whose band the Reigning Sound backed her up on the whole thing.  The Reigning Sound have more of a rock 'n' roll vibe than they do a punk vibe.   GC is a huge record collector who knows girl group song structure inside and out, and the songwriting is steeped in the kind of melancholy that made the Shangri-La's so great without being cheesey or too retro.  Her voice isn't quite the same anymore, but, unlike, say, that last Ronnie Spector album, the fit between modern "garage" and her sensibility is pretty natural.

...

I think I love the Rhino ONE KISS CAN LEAD TO ANOTHER girl group box set more than I do the Nuggets sets.

thanks nasty.....
i just bought the shangs' myradons of melodrama -
and you can see how weiss' voice matured in the later shang recordings - (dressed in black in fantastic...)

you point out that weiss' adoption of the 'garage' thing was more 'natural' than ronnie spector's...
that's true.
while the ronettes had more wider, mainstream appeal (They fit that 'sexy' mode more than the shangs),
the shangri-las were more of a prototype for bands like blondie, the runaways, patti smith, new york dolls and now amy winehouse etc...
they were more genuinely 'rock and roll' to me than the ronettes.....
when they toured, they always chose the local garage band to back them up - like the sonics....
i love the ronettes, but song-for-song, the shangs, with shadow morton, put a more hauntin, original stamp on things....
