Some of these bands have influenced the punk Movement in the late 70's, there's this great box set
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuggets:_Original_Artyfacts_from_the_First_Psychede...
Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A lot of these bands were one hit wonders, but that one hit left a big impression, there's also bands from England in Nuggets 2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuggets_II:_Original_Artyfacts_from_the_British_Emp...

Well, I don't know if it's even worth it for me to vote because I'd be voting for most of them...I could probably whittle it down to 5-10 or so.... Roll Eyes

By the way, those Nuggets box sets are fantastic! I have the original Nuggets 2 lp {vinyl} that came out in the very early 70's. First time I'd heard some of those bands {the rarer ones}. If you love garage rock, those sets are definitely "must have"...

Hey Sioux! glad someone knows & likes these bands, I guess it's kind of like a time capsule thing too, to grow up in the mid 60's & know these songs, I remember being at a Clash concert in '79, in a movie theatre, & before they came on, they were playing a lot of these songs over a PA system.
I just did the American bands, The Ugly Ducklings from Toronto (Their in Nuggets 2 box set, which is English bands, although The Ducklings are from Toronto) were very Stones influenced, they opened for The Stones in '66 at Maple Leaf Gardens, & opened with "Everybody Needs Somebody to love" which is what the Stones opened with, there's a Brian Jones look alike in that band too.
Nuggets is a fantastic box set, I remember buying it (first one) in vinyl when it first came out.

It looks like ? & Mysterians are leading, no votes for the Barbarians? Embarrassed    they were on the TAMI show, their drummer had a hook on one of his hands, Moulty tells the story all about it, another of their songs was "Are you a Boy, or are you a girl" one of the early songs about sexual confusion regarding long hair on guys back in the 60's.

I feel unable to vote in this paricular poll. I know very little about the Garage band scene of the 1960's. I have often wanted to check out the likes of The Sonics.

Could anyone give any reccomendations as to what the best comilations are? I know of the Nuggets boxsets, but they're very pricey on the UK Amazon. I did notice that there is a single CD version, though containing only 20+ tracks, I'm sure its missing plenty of the essential recordings.

I voted for The Seeds.

I saw the Remains at Amoeba awhile back. I also recently bought one of their CDs in the cutout bin for a dollar when I felt the need to fill my pockets with lots of stuff for an event later that evening. Never listened to it.

Because they're a three song band, tops.  After Moulty, Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl, and That's What the New Breed Say, you're firmly into dull covers territory.  How they gonna compete with the Sonics or the Elevators or  :question

Now no one voting for the Remains, who produced just about the greatest single "Garage Band" LP of all time, that's crazy.

But then, I voted Sonics, so I think the problem might be that there are too many bands on this list for anyone to get the majority vote.

Curious poll absence:  Paul Revere and the Raiders, who made much of this stuff possible.

And that's me too. I guess I could vote for the ones I like, but seriously, I do like all of them, to some degree or another... Wink

Yes, PR&R started out to be a {does this sound familiar?} R&B cover band. They were WILD in their early days in the Pac Northwest. The wildest sound was probably the Sonics, but the wildest and most popular shows were the Raiders....

They have 2 cuts on the Nuggets box set---"Just Like Me", and "Steppin' Out". Both legitimately included. Cool

I went with The Standells. After thinking about it. They were a band i heard a long long time ago, and fell in love. Even though the others are equally good, I went with the one that had the first and most influence on me... It seemed fair!

I like the era and the genre plenty.  My beef is that the poll seems to have done nothing but repeat the Nuggets lineup.  It may well be a good poll for favorite group on Nuggets, but it's a poor poll for garage bands '65-'68.  It needed more thought, especially as what fell into the announced 65-68 time frame.

Interesting point LotsaJizz - is the problem too many bands or bands that were left out?  Thinking about it, there's not a whole lot of bands not on the poll that could trounce the best bands on the poll.

Paul Revere and the Raiders is the biggest omission I can see, and after that probably the Swamp Rats.

Or Cannibal and the Headhunters.

I thought maybe the Haunted, but they're Canadian, so are beyond the bounds of the poll.

So what bands would you suggest? there are a lot of other bands.
1-Every Mothers Son/Five Americans/Lemon Pipers/Outsiders/Swinging Medallions/Fifth Estate/Royal Guardsmen, the list could go on & on.
As to not to much thought was put in this poll, you've got to be kidding me, I spent a lot of time & thought putting this together, Nuggets list is the bands that were well 'known, & even those bands people don't recognize, let alone some unknown band that never had a hit record.
As for Paul Revere & Raiders, I have trouble regarding them as a garage band because they had major big hits in the 60's, it's like calling The Byrds/Lovin' Spoonful/Young Rascals/Beach Boys/Turtles/McCoys/Love/Association, etc a garage band, their very early hits had that garage sound, which is stripped down with just guitars, Bass, Drums & keyboard, like "Just Like Me' has got that Kinks slide the barre chord sound, but later on their records were produced with horns & orchestra, Terry Melcher produced them on Columbia, I'm leaving them for later on with a poll on American Bands.
As for American Garage bands in the 65-68 time period, Nuggets has got the perfect list, if you can come up with other bands that are not on the list, list them.

If you're seriously going to consider a band like Every Mother's Son or the Outsiders as "garage bands" but disallow Paul Revere and the Raiders as a garage band on the basis of hits, horns and orchestra, then I am going to give you a  Blank Frigging Stare

Homeboys DEFINE American garage sound.  Mark Lindsay's holler and songwriting define garage in that they are pretty much squarely in the excellent-but-ungenius arena where the bulk of the major players in this genre excel.  The Just Like Us LP has about two originals and a ton of covers of current R&B and rock 'n' roll hits - just like every garage LP of the era.   Good Thing and Hungry are garage ORGASMS, Good Thing in particular.   That they had a TV show and Melcher production means little in the face of the raging sound of their best tunage.

I mean, this is a pointless, and for me, merely semantic & fun argument - all any of it is, really, is rock and roll, who cares if it's "garage" or not, but stupid rock and roll arguments are pretty much the point of this board, so whatever.  Paul Revere and the Raiders have been refused their due for too long.  So . . .

Paul Revere/Raiders.  Garage Band.

about 500 yeras ago i was in a band we used to do Aint No Friend of Mine - originallyby the Sparkles I believe (Nasty?)

that was a rocking tune

but you gotta love Roky Eriksonn - although I liked his renaissance stuff from the 70s best - two headed dog / bloody hammer - he had some great songs

You rock!

Yep, SIA.  The Sparkles.  On Hickory.  From Texas.  Killer band - in addition to No Friend (awesome song) they also did the great Hipsville 29 B.C. (I Need Help!), one called Daddy's Gonna Put the Hurt on You and a truly stooopid two side winner:  Oh Girls,Girls/The Hip.

This is a great comment/tribute to PR&R, and Mark would be tickled to read it, I'm sure. Too bad his message board went down last Sept....Sad He could use some cheering up right now, as his Rock & Roll Cafe in Portland, Ore. just closed down on Monday... Sad Had his own radio show on Sat. nights, that was broadcast from the restaurant. He's a great guy and I hope things work out for him---I've known him since '87......anyway, THANKS for all the kind, and TRUE words.  Smiley
