Where did I read that Springsteen actually LIKES Silly Love Songs? Must have been Goldmine Mag....anyway, he said he didn't "get it" at first--didn't like it. But now, with wife Patti and kids, he understands what Paul was trying to say...... Huh

let's call a spade a spade here:

1. macca is an egomaniac.
2. cash bar at mills/mccartney wedding? lame.
3. walking out of grammys when your album doesn't win best album of the year? ghey.
4. silly love songs? ebony and ivory? another day? ghey ghey ghey.

BUT....

1. very few had his voice, ranging from the boyish charm of till there was you to the gritty screaming of helter skelter & i've got a feeling and everything in between.
2. one of best melodic bass players in rock history. his bass lines will make a dead man cum...'
3. skilled on the guitar, drums and piano, making him perhaps the most versatile musician to come out of a decade of incredible, talented and gifted musicians.

in short...you may hate his personality and find him annoying. more power to you. but you can't argue with the fact that he is one of the best overall musicians out there. if you do, you clearly don't know what you're talking about!

Starbuck, you forgot the biggest thing: his songs!  This is the guy that wrote Hey Jude, Let It Be, Penny Lane, Yesterday, For No One, Elanor Rigby, We Can Work it out, Lady Madonna, Long and Winding Road, Helter Skelter, and All My Loving, any one of which another artist could make a career out of.  And that's just off the top of my head.  Macca is one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

No way is he even close to "the most versatile."

My selections for most versatile are either John Paul Jones (when he played with D. Galas, he played pedal steel for 1/2 of the show), or Ry Cooder(where did Joachim learn to play drums, if not from Ry?).  And even though I am not a fan of Brian Jones, didn't he play a whole slew of instruments -- banjo, sitar, etc., etc. more than competently?

Even assuming arguendo that McCartney did have technical skills, doesn't the soul-lessness of his solo career tip the scales against him?  "Silly Love Songs" and the like are the epitome of easy-listening crap.   I'll give him "Jet," "Helen Wheels," "Live and Let Die," and "Helter Skelter."  Now will he please go away?

He said "perhaps."  A qualifier.  How about "among" or "right up there."

He wrote a few good songs before the soul-less solo career.

jonesie is very versatile, i realize....but did he ever sing? vocal prowess is perhaps the most important quality in a band...you can be average musically, but if you sing purty, you'll get the crowds.

are you saying macca is a below average bass player? guitar player? you do know it was macca doing a ton of the leads in the revolver/rubber soul era, don't you? the dude was a good guitar player.

Paul Mcartney....

Come now. Can there be any bigger wimp? He is the poster child of a chic whipped wimp. Always has been.

When The Stones Painted it Black the Beatles Held Your Hand...(I'm pretty sure I have read this exact line written or posted somewhere before so please forgive me if this appears plagiarized. I will not claim any credit to creating this line. It just fits so well I could not resist).

Paul was singing Silly Little Love Song and The Stones did Miss You.

Band on The Run vs. It's Only Rock N Roll.

Paul is what he is... a sissy. One hell of a Rich sissy but still....quite the sissy.

I think you can claim that as an original line....Smiley I did read this one "The Beatles want to hold your hand. The Stones want to burn your town." I LOVE that one.  Wink

Yes. Yes. Anywhere from 30 -60 musical instruments. He was accomplished on piano, clarinet, harmonica....and add to that all the other instruments, including strange-to-Western-ears world music instruments, it's quite an impressive list. Not to mention that he could pick up ANY instrument and get something good/useful out of it in 30 minutes or less. {Even Keith admitted that, long ago...}
