Great read thanks for sharing. A much underrated gem for sure and would have made a tremendous live addition to the Licks Club dates.

Really?  I missed that entirely.  But then again I was hiding behind the couch and peeking between my fingers for much of that movie.  What a shameful and lame bio of a great performer.

Charlie Watts does not drum on this track. Jimmy Miller does.

Vanetta Fields has lived here in Oz for over 30 years, mainly known here as backing vocalist for our most successful solo male artist, John Farnham.

nice sentiments in the article, but just a lot of blather, really. I thought being on the Gibson site, it was going to have hard information about the gear used on the recording. Instead the writer seems to think the track including backup singers was all done in one "moment," rather than having things overdubbed after the core band put down the backing. And was this one even done at Nellcote, or later in LA?

"Shine a Light" anyway dates from well before the Nellcote sessions.

Truthfully, I never thought much of the song.  Maybe I didn't fully understand the emotion of the tune.  After reading this article, I'll have to give this song a careful listen.

Tremendous track obviously. One of their best recordings, if you know what I'm trying to say- just amazingly constructed. It's got to be one of the top 10 ballads in the rock canon. Definitely one of the best uses of gospel in rock music. Plus Mick's vocal is absolutely first rate. He was at his peak during the late 60s, early 70s no doubt. Every instrumental and vocal part is incredible, although I never really have noticed a prominent bass part but otherwise. Most songs going over 5 minutes are padded with meandering solos, but not this one.

I love the way a lot of the vocal is freeform - I mean in that each line is sung differently . The horns really are a sublime touch too

jagger's finest moment, without a doubt.
i have a friend who is not a stones freak, but loves this song....

it's one of those songs you can't expain or talk about because you don't want to sound pretentious,
but......
it's truly transcendent,
to me, it's about finding yourself losing yourself in someone else and being afraid to surrender -
but you already have.
thanks, garp -
this assessment is the best i've ever read.

It is "delivers right on time"

LET IT LOOSE
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Who's that woman on your arm all dressed up to do you harm
And I'm hip to what she'll do, give her just about a month or two.
Bit off more than I can chew and I knew what it was leading to,
Some things, well, I can't refuse,
One of them, one of them the bedroom blues.
She delivers right on time, I can't resist a corny line,
But take the shine right off you shoes,
Carryin', carryin' the bedroom blues.
Oo...

In the bar you're getting drunk, I ain't in love, I ain't in luck.
Hide the switch and shut the light, let it all come down tonight.
Maybe your friends think I'm just a stranger,
Some face you'll never see no more.

Let it all come down tonight.
Keep those tears hid out of sight, let it loose, let it all come down.

There are no words to describe Let it Loose.

I wish they could perform it live, but it deserves a really laid-back approach, no back-up chaos, and I'm not sure they'd do it that way.

hey corgi as you see i agree with you on tis one still i am always wary of some - body elses idea of what the lyrics are and just because they've made it into print it doesn't necessarily mean they are correct...i mean, i doubt mick and keith proof read any stones stuff published  featuring the lyrics and of course anything you find on the net is even less reliable

i'm quite sure that the sleeve notes say Miller plays drums on SAL yes, but lots of different musicians were playing different instruments on Exile, e.g. Keith bass on Casino Boogie and Mick Taylor bass on Tumbling Dice(i think) not to mention Amyl Nitrate playing the marimbas on something
