Falcons pay tribute to late Tom Benson in the first quarter

ATLANTA -- There may be no love lost between the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons organizations, but there is still room for classy tributes like the one Atlanta made to late Saints owner Tom Benson.

The tribute played on the "halo board" screen that hangs above the field during the second TV timeout. it featured a video of Benson flanked by the words "The Falcons salute the life of Tom Benson" and "thank you for the rivalry."

The Falcons and Saints played 66 times during Benson's ownership.

Drew Brees is the Led Zeppelin of the NFL

By Michael Salfino  |  October 29, 2018

Drew Brees is a Golden God. Okay, a Black-and-Golden God. He enters Week 9 of the NFL season with an all-time record of 72,435 passing yards. And his 502 passing touchdowns are just 38 behind all-time leader Peyton Manning. With every completion, he breaks another record. His passing is like nothing seen before—innovative, aggressive, swaggering, rousing and raucous. He drives his fans into an orgasmic ecstasy. But outside of the screaming masses, Brees leaves many others cold, believing his records lack substance and his greatness is vastly overstated.
Despite his smashing success, Brees is never lifted above his current and former contemporaries. Tom Brady is The Beatles of quarterbacks. But in the debate of greatness, The Rolling Stones is not Brees but Peyton Manning. Most people are Brady people. There are some Peyton people. Brees is not even referenced in the debate. So if quarterbacks were rock icons, Brees is Led Zeppelin.

Brees has distanced himself from Tom Brady in yards and likely will pass both Brady and Manning in touchdowns. It’s similar to how Zeppelin broke records set by The Beatles and were easily the most popular act of the 1970s. They, more than anyone, defined stadium rock.

Brees similarly defined modern football and the emergence of the passing game as an unstoppable force, throwing for 5,000 or more yards five times, compared to four for every other quarterback in history combined.
And while Zeppelin didn’t win a Grammy during the life of the band, Brees has incredibly never been named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player.
Brees, short for a quarterback at just six-feet tall, was punished for his size by being selected behind no-names like David Terrell, Gerard Warren, Jamal Reynolds and Damione Lewis in the NFL Draft
Similarly, the critics had the knives out for Led Zeppelin from the outset, trashing their stature of all things, as in this super-sarcastic Rolling Stone review of Led Zeppelin II by John Mendelsohn:

“And who can deny that Jimmy Page is the absolute number-one heaviest white blues guitarist between 5’4? and 5’8? in the world?? Shit, man, on this album he further demonstrates that he could absolutely fucking shut down any white bluesman alive, and with one fucking hand tied behind his back too.”

Like the criticism of Zeppelin, the knocks on Brees seem downright bizarre. From his pre-draft scouting report: Brees “lacks accuracy and touch on his long throws….”
Wut? Brees soon beat an Olympic archer in a bullseye contest for cryin’ out loud. Witness.

What’s next, saying Robert Plant can’t sing? Oh, wait…. Here’s Rolling Stone again on Led Zeppelin I: “Plant’s strained and unconvincing shouting… He may be as foppish as Rod Stewart, but he’s nowhere near so exciting, especially in the higher registers….”

I guess Jimmy Page can’t play guitar, either. Rolling Stone in the Houses of the Holy review, “Page has no ‘spontaneity’ and his playing is ‘self-indulgent’ resulting in a ‘Limp Blimp.’

As his career went on, Brees’s records were discounted due to playing indoors, not producing enough wins even after a Super Bowl victory and being the product of modern excess. Instead of being canonized for his accomplishments, he’s was bashed as overpaid and overrated.

Brees needed to be defended by native sons Actually more than we can say about Zeppelin

But the world finally caught up with Zeppelin. And it’s catching up with Brees now.
The band finally won a Grammy in 2014. That came after the Recording Academy seemed to feel embarrassed about slighting them for decades by awarding them a “Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2005—after only 300 million record sales. While no member of Zeppelin has ever been knighted, an honor bestowed on Tom Jones and Cliff Richard, Rolling Stone at least has rechristened their catalog

From “weak” and “unimaginative” to this: “Jimmy Page’s guitar pounces from the speakers, fat with menace; John Bonham’s kick drum swings with anvil force; Robert Plant rambles on about the perils of manhood. Hard rock would never be the same.”

Decades after the death of drummer John Bonham resulted in their breakup, Zeppelin is now hailed by some as not just arguably the most successful rock band of all time, but the greatest one, too

Reviews of Brees are being revised in real time while his career is still in progress. He’s moved from overrated to The Most Underrated Player Ever.

Insiders and coaches who once rolled their collective eyes at his statistics now say he’s the perfect quarterback. Even his biggest knock relative to Brady, his won-loss record, is being laid mostly at the feet of his historically inept defenses.

But it’s still too soon, apparently, to all the way to saying that Drew Brees not only has been the most productive quarterback in NFL history, but also The Greatest one, too.

Check back in about 2040.

Saints' Super Bowl takeover in Atlanta would extend to Falcons facility, locker room: report

A New Orleans Saints' Super Bowl takeover in Atlanta could extend beyond the seats inside the stadium and the city streets.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday (Dec. 20) that the Falcons' team training facility in Flowery Branch, Georgia, and locker room at Mercedes-Benz Stadium would be home to the Saints coaches and players, as well.

Cities that host Super Bowls commonly open their team training facilities to one of the teams that will play in the game. In this case, the Falcons facility and locker room will be open to whichever team advances from the NFC, the report said.

The AFC qualifier will practice at Georgia Tech and use the visiting team locker room.

The Saints currently hold the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs and can clinch home-field advantage through the conference championship round with a win Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Doing so would assure the Saints of being home from then until at least the Super Bowl, as the Saints close the regular season at home Dec. 30 against the Carolina Panthers.

Statement from Saints Owner Gayle Benson

Yesterday’s result is still difficult to accept for all of us. I am thoroughly disappointed by the events that led to the outcome of yesterday’s game. Getting to the Super Bowl is incredibly difficult to do and takes such an unbelievable commitment from a team and support from its fans. No team should ever be denied the opportunity to reach the title game (or simply win a game) based on the actions, or inactions, of those charged with creating a fair and equitable playing field. As is clear to all who watched the game, it is undeniable that our team and fans were unfairly deprived of that opportunity yesterday. I have been in touch with the NFL regarding yesterday’s events and will aggressively pursue changes in NFL policies to ensure no team and fan base is ever put in a similar position again. It is a disservice to our coaches, players, employees and, most importantly, the fans who make our game possible. The NFL must always commit to providing the most basic of expectations - fairness and integrity.

Our entire team is humbled and grateful for the support shown by our fans over the course of the season. It has become common for teams to proclaim that they have the “best fans in the NFL”. I do not believe there is any debate, however, that we truly have the most inspiring, committed and passionate fans in all of professional sports. This is true whether you are from New Orleans or part of our family of fans from the entire state, region and country.

The truth is we are more than team and fans- we are a family. As a family we celebrate together, support each other and sometimes suffer together. This past season has been especially meaningful to me as we honored my husband. I will never be able to fully express my appreciation for the way all of you have supported me and our team in honoring Tom Benson’s legacy. I know he is proud of this team and our fans.

While the way this season ended has left us all frustrated and disappointed, I am comforted knowing we will respond the way our community always responds - with resilience, fierce determination and love for each other and the Saints.

I have had many blessings in my life, perhaps the greatest is being born in New Orleans and having the opportunity to be a part of the Saints family with you. Next season starts now and I can’t wait to share it with you again. - Gayle Benson

You see the arguments from some of the Saints' players about the rule about the commissioner restarting the game over or from that point or whatever," Whitworth told Eisen, via Turf Show Times. "My argument to that would be, Rich, is then Jared Goff got a facemask on the second down on the possession before that was not called. That'd be first-and-goal at the 1 down three points. If you look at our odds from the 1 this season, that's seven points. So, they'd be down four, and a field goal wouldn't matter. They would have had to score in that situation either way.

So, the reality is, where is the last foul that you want to argue? Whether it's blatant or not is not a matter. It's whether it's a foul.

"So, it's just one of those things that's a slippery slope, and it's an excuse. [However] you cut it. And the reality is they got football after that snap. They played in overtime with the football. New England had the same situation and won the game. They didn't score; we did.

"We can argue about it all day, but they had an opportunity to win the game and we won it."

New Orleans City Council to Roger Goodell: City 'can't be walked all over'

BY ALEX WOODWARD  Jan 24, 2019

Following the New Orleans Saints’ crushing loss in a “blemished NFC Championship game,” the New Orleans City Council unanimously agreed to demand the NFL “ignite a thorough review” of its rules and officiating.

The Council (and every Saints fan) attributes that loss to a now-unforgettable no-call pass interference tackle that would have set up a first down and a chance for the Saints to run down the clock with less than 2 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

“Instead, the no-call forced overtime and the Rams beat the Saints 26-23, advancing to Super Bowl LIII,” the resolution says. “The no-call will affect more than a trip to this year’s Super Bowl LIII for the New Orleans Saints; it has the power to impact the careers of players and coaches and calls attention to a problem the NFL has neglected to address for far too long.”

The resolution, authored by City Council Vice President Helena Moreno and cosponsored by the other six members of the City Council, argues that the evolution of the game requires “the need for officiating that is rooted in consistency, speed, accuracy, and is capable of keeping up with changes in the game.”

The resolution is not legally binding but, as District C Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer explained, will “express the intent of the City Council … and what the city feels.”

“The NFL Officiating Department must remain committed to ensuring that every NFL referee is proficient on its rulebook, dedicated to upholding those rules during every game, and that any instances of conflict of interest are investigated and dealt with accordingly,” it reads. “It is clear that the New Orleans Saints did not receive fair and equitable treatment by the NFL referees assigned to the NFC Championship game this past Sunday; this egregious lapse in professionalism and integrity has left Saints coaches, players, employees, and fans unable to compete in Super Bowl LIII.”

The resolution passed moments before the body honored New Orleans rapper Choppa, whose 2001 hit “Choppa Style” has served as the Saints’ anthem for 2018-2019.

“When the Saints are winning,” he said, “it’s just a magical moment … I’m honored to carry the torch for the city right now.”

He closed with his signature “Oh, yeah!”

The City Council’s resolution demands a review of the NFL’s replay rules for penalties and for the NFL Officiating Department to be subject to an assessment of potential conflicts of interest.

A copy of the resolution will be sent NFL officials, the NFL Players Association, Saints owner Gayle Benson, and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

“If we would’ve lost this game fair and square, we would’ve been upset, we all know that, but we wouldn’t be as outraged as we are today,” Moreno said. “Mr. Goodell, we are not a little city — meek and mild that can be walked all over. We are the Who Dat Nation.”

Well how about this ?

The NFL takes $26k-plus from a player for a hit that was not called, yet allows play to continue without penalty.

The corrupt NFL knows of the impropriety surrounding this mess, and pansy-ass Goodell doesn't have balls to come out and say it.
Perhaps he should put Jane Skinner out there to do his talking for him.

We didn't see this level of incompetence when Tagliabue was in charge, did we ?

Apparently the NFL's only interest lies with the bottom line.

Be damned with the integrity of the game if it becomes "too expensive" to get it right.

Report: NFL Roger Goodell for hit on no-call play vs. Saints: You'll get nothing and like it.

That's exactly the reason why they're so butthurt right now. Those folks would've been on the first bus, plane, car, motorcycle, or starship smoking down here had they won that game, along with their local media folks to rub salt into the wound. Other big rivalries in the league (see Packers/Bears, Ravens/Steelers) don't have the unique dynamic of 1) having a large number of transients from its' rival reside in their towns and 2) worrying every few years about hosting a Super Bowl with its' archrivals playing in it because they don't get to host that game to begin with (Dallas being the exception with Jerry World).

While it's one thing for them to have been gifted with a trophy and chanting that score ad nauseum, what they really wanted was that finishing maneuver, that one notch on the belt that can never be lived down. That was their logo splattered all over downtown Atlanta and on Falcon property in Flowery Branch. It was their fans preening and prancing up and down Peachtree Street for two weeks and goading anyone in the vicinity into a verbal or physical confrontation. If their team took the liberty to urinate in the middle of the Georgia Dome turf after a game, no telling how badly they would've trashed Falcon HQ and/or taken a billion pictures of them in it to share on social media. The Falcons could win the next three Lombardis after that and we still wouldn't have an answer for 'yeah, but we played for (or egads, won) a Super Bowl in your house!!'

That opportunity was swiped from under them like Lucy snatching the ball away before Charlie Brown tries to kick it. They know that such an opportunity to call 'scoreboard' on this feud is gone and our team is one great season away from pulling even in the championship department. That's where all of the vitriol, piss, and vinegar from them is coming from...

Opinion: Roger Goodell should be a hero to New Orleans, but he can't get out of his own way

Nate Scott, Jan. 27, 2019

It seems impossible to remember this, but Roger Goodell was once a hero in the city of New Orleans.

Well, maybe not a hero, he was loved in certain, knowing pockets of the city for what he did in keeping the Saints in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina (and the man-made issues related to disaster preparedness) destroyed much of the city in 2005.

Goodell, then acting as the COO and the No. 2 man in the NFL behind commissioner Paul Tagliabue, led the charge within the league to ensure that the team remained in New Orleans and was not moved to San Antonio, as was reportedly being considered strongly by Saints owner Tom Benson.

Goodell argued passionately on behalf of the city of New Orleans, then led the charge within the league to re-open the Superdome, working hand-in-hand with the Superdome staff to get the building ready for fans just a year after it had been turned into a nightmarish refuge for people stranded in the city after the storm. Few in the league cared as much as Goodell did. He was committed to keeping the NFL in NOLA, and when plenty of other people within the league probably thought it was too much work, or impossible, and the team should just move to San Antonio, he remained steadfast.

When Steve Gleason blocked the punt on that first night back in the Dome, and football was well and truly back in New Orleans, Goodell was watching, and could rightfully claim to have been a big part of what made that moment possible.

Then he went and screwed everything up.

First, there was the Bountygate Scandal, still a sore spot for Saints fans. It was 2010 and Goodell, now commissioner, and the NFL were reeling after multiple reports about CTE were being released. The Saints were coming off a 2009 Super Bowl win, and the following offseason an anonymous player reported that the Saints had implemented a "bounty" system during their playoff run, with players promised cash rewards for laying out big hits on opponents.

What could have been construed as an iffy motivation tactic or, perhaps, another indicator that the NFL was a sport built on violence, was instead taken by the league as a grand crime that needed a major inquiry and fitting punishment. Saints fans bellowed that it was unfair, and a somewhat cynical person could argue that the timing was a little suspect: The NFL was reeling from accusations that its game was too violent, and instead of reckoning with the sport and the damage it does to athletes' brains, they instead launched a grand inquisition into one team rewarding players for big hits.

Like the Deflategate scandal for the Patriots, Goodell couldn't seem to get out of his own way with Bountygate. He set up a seemingly arbitrary investigation process, switching up protocol when it suited him, then handed out punishment based on ... what was in his gut? It was everything bad you'd expect from an extralegal investigation, the sort of make-it-up-as-you-go bit of justice that led to fans losing their minds.

And then there was the non-pass interference call in the NFC Championship Game against the Los Angeles Rams. It was a terrible non-call that contributed (somewhat) to the Saints not making another Super Bowl.

Goodell again seemed to stumble in the aftermath. The league toned down the rhetoric, then seemed to admit that a call was missed, and then dismissed any ideas of reviewing the play or using a little-known rule to change the result. It then fined the Rams' player for the offending hit, even though he wasn't penalized on the play (!?), another bizarre bit of blame-shifting that felt totally tone deaf and stupid.

New Orleans fans aren't mad at Nickell Robey-Coleman for committing a penalty. Penalties happen all the time. New Orleans fans are mad that the penalty wasn't called and they lost the game. Through it all, Goodell remained committed to a few things. 1) The result should stand. 2) This shouldn't turn into a larger discussion of making plays like this reviewable. 3) Nothing comes before The Shield.

Goodell's relationship with the city of New Orleans seems to underscore both what has made him great for the NFL and what has made him awful - a deep knowing sense within himself that he knows the right thing to do. When it came to keeping the Saints in New Orleans, Goodell wouldn't budge, and he made the right call. When it came to Bountygate, he remained committed to the idea that the Saints should be punished for something, even when it didn't make sense really, and balked when it turned into a larger discussion about the league and its damaging of players' brains.

And when it comes to this non-PI call, he remains committed to the idea that this result should stand and it shouldn't turn into a larger discussion about the league's rules, and that nothing should threaten The Integrity of The Shield. (Please note sarcasm with that capitalization. Thank you.)

Goodell is steadfast, and when he's in the right, it works well. When he's not, and it doesn't align with common sense or what fans want, it comes across as stubborn and silly. And it has ruined what should be a wonderful relationship with the city of New Orleans.

NO!

I told you - Jagger would not touch the knee/no knee race-baiting business.

In separate news, Gladys Knight was shilling for the house in throwing the National Anthem total time.  Big under-the-table payoffs in that.  See story link:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/why-knights-national-anthem-sparked-controversy-with-bettors/ar-BBT8BJJ?li=BBnb7Kz

"Due to a dispute over Christina Aguilera's 2011 performance, prop bets for the Super Bowl anthem are scored at the conclusion of the first "brave." Fast forward to Knight's performance ahead of Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta, and the argument could be made that Knight sang "brave" twice. (On purpose, not erroneously - she's awesome).

She stretched that "brave" out at the end and may have even started a separate "brave." That becomes an issue for anyone who placed a bet on the national anthem time. The over/under was set at 110 seconds. Depending on how you time it, the anthem came in at around 118 seconds in entirety.

"The definition of that first "brave" though changed the prop completely. If it was stopped at the end of the first "brave," she hit the under. If time to the end, she easily hit the over.

"In 2015, the anthem prop was taken off the board due to suspicious betting. With so much money on the line with this prop, the ultimate decision will be controversial no matter how sportsbooks rule."

I converted to Mormonism, by the way.  I shall be spreading the word of the Angel Moroni, the messenger of god.  I may spread the word through rhetorical questions like "If god can put lips on a fish, why can't He biff the Dark One?"  Stuff like that.  I'm still learning the tools.
