20 years of Rocks Off
July 14, 1998 – to date

It is time to celebrate our first two decades

20 years ago Jaxx, Gazza and Voodoo started Rocks Off as a message board. Some months later on March 23, 1999 we created the website, in May 2003 a message board in Spanish and later in November 2011 a Facebook page.

20 years of free optional entertainment and yes totally free, totally optional, but not sure if it is totally entertaining!

We started when connecting to the net required a telephone line; I got an additional telephone line because of this… during those days we were waiting a few days to get setlists or shows reports and we were happy to get them, no complaints about repeated setlists!

We have appeared in several international rock magazines, newspapers, books, radio stations, TV, and professional movies.

We were the site of the year in the official Rolling Stones website, a video at the official website credited Rocks Off for announcing the show number 2,000 the video included testimonies of the four members, Riffy mentioned Rocks Off to the Rolling Stones in a press conference in NYC (two press conferences Licks Tour and Shine a light), we have 28 entries in Wikipedia since a long time, we were mentioned by the BBC twice.

We have contacted very important people and celebrities because of our website.

All of the above will be in detail in the upcoming webpage of 20 years of getting our rocks off along with your contributions in this thread.

But wait, that’s not all, we are going to make exclusive t-shirts and mugs of Rocks Off of FYG, WY? And also a contest with cool prizes, this one later.

We know that we suck and probably have sucked all the time, we also know that nowadays we’re not the same, but who gives a fuck anyway, we will be here until we die or until only Gazza and/or I post whichever comes first, let’s do some living after we die.

But…

WE NEED YOUR HELP

There are a lot of stories to tell about these 20 years so we want to make a page in rocksoff.org about our history, funny moments on both on line and in real life, so please tell us about moments to include, send pictures, videos, send girlfriends, wives, sheep, joints, fake Joeys, Paris’ thongs, beers, send whatever you want.

20 years? Holy shit! This may call for THE SUMMIT OF THE CENTURY!
Best memory with this crew was the time the Unholy Trinity met up in NY. My job was to get everyone to Giants Stadium and then got tasked with keeping an eye on Gerardo. He disappeared to get beers during the opening number and he never returned. I wondered how I was going to explain this to Jaxx. At the end of the show, while walking down the exit ramp, there was Gerardo singing Satisfaction using the sole of his shoe as a microphone. I never bothered telling folks I had lost him until months later. ;D

Despite not posting much, I am a relative old timer since 99 or 01, don't remember. Best Stones site by a country mile. Hate to sound like I'm sucking up, but it's down to how the site is managed. People are free to say what they want and only egregious stuff is banned. Above all though, it's the sense of humor on this site that means it leads the way. Well done to all the management and frequent contributors.

Reading my profile, it says I joined in 2008...but I know that I joined the earlier board version during ABB...so I am thinking mid-2005...about the same time I started going to the Shidoobee January Brunches (where I met Doug and TomL the first time) and my own Glimmer Twins were born (Sept 2005)...here they are in official Stones Confetti from MCI center Oct 3, 2005 (age 1 month):

So, I know this place was a magical place when I started BEGGING for someone's extra AC 2006 ticket...Then a sweet angel named Mary...our very own GotToRollMe Mary came thru. She didnt have a paypal account and trusted me as we talked terms about mailing the tkt and payments etc...I got a $60 ticket (one of about 100 sold) in the smallest venue of the tour for one of the BEST shows I have ever seen.

It was that concert that forged my faith in the folks at RocksOff...and I had the pleasure to make a friend with our dear GTRM!! I only knew her from RO and FB and our brief encounter, but she was the sweetest.
If not for her and her ticket, I would not have stuck by RO for this long.

Of course other highlights have been seeing and meeting others in Buffalo, Mexico, Dublin, DC, Raleigh and other cities. Meeting folks multiple times is so much fun...

I even had the pleasure of serving drinks to Rob (SaintOfMe) in DC on several occasions as his business trips would have him come to where I tended bar (with live music). My Stones T-Shirt served as a catalyst for conversations...(Are you on RO? Who are you on Shidoobee?)

I could drone on and on...but THANK YOU GAZZA!!!

I hope to meet more of y'all at future shows and parties...

PS...another great highlight was the Trading Trees we would have setup...I still have the original Marco 5 CD set of outtakes and remixes...I could use a fresh set of files as these CDs have worn out, but I wont toss them...See ya in 2038!!!

If you want ideas, I will suggest a few things.

20 years is an outstanding amount of time. I appreciate this sight and I am beyond impressed with the amount of content in the links. Some of the links need updating. For example, magazine covers stops about 18 years ago. Maybe someone can volunteer to update the page and include the actual magazine covers on an ongoing basis. Some existing links should be taken down or be revamped and some new Stones-related links should be created. For Example, Lisa Fischer deserves a link, as does Darryl Jones and Bernard Fowler. Bobby Keys def needs a link, I miss his presence terribly. Sasha Allen even needs a link, although I dont even like her. Or instead maybe a link with ALL of the back up singers. Matt Clifford, Chuck Levell, TIm Ries, Blondie Chapman, these guys are worth covering for historical purposes. After 20 years, thats a lot of Stones history in itself and it needs to be documented. I'm sure the Stones themselves don't have accurate lists. A link for Press Conferences and public appearances including photos can be created. Stones family trees would be interesting. A Stones history love life tree would be kinda trashy and juicy. Remember Ronnie's Russian blond bombshell? And finally, we need a remembrance link for all of our friends who have passed on in the Rocks Off community, Mary, Luxury, and to be continually updated as time passes us by, Gone but never forgotten.

As for the members, do you want photos, reviews, memories, personal "Stones" stories? We can write a damn book, especially if Gazza is involved. I have always said one day when I retire I will write a book about my Stones adventures. THis could be the start of something BIG!

You should change the photo collage at the top of the page. How many posts does it take to get my pic up there?

Reading some of these posts brings tears to my eyes.

I don't remember HOWE I stumbled upon this place, but I did and it changed my life.

Without a doubt RO is the BEST Rolling Stones Fan Message Board of all time for no other has the same sense of lunacy.

I remember many people saying to me "I've tried to get into Rocks Off, but I just don't understand all of the nonsense". My immediate thought: "Exactly. And you never will and therefore you'll never appreciate the beauty of this group of intelligent, quick witted, filthy minded, kindhearted Rolling Stones delinquents".

From Paris' Thong to Howe Military (don't click the link) to the Joey?? thread, to Fuck You Gazza, Will Ya to The Drinking Threads to Superblow......ahh so many good memories.

I've been lurking since 2002 and posting since 2003 and I still check in every day.

It's been my great honor to meet many of you and to now call many of you friends. In fact, some of my dearest friendships were formed right here.

Thank you Jaxx Gazza and Voo for creating and maintaining this asylum.
Here's to 20 more years!!!

And here's to those that have left us, especially our beloved Luxury and GotToRollMe, two very cool Stones chicks.

20 years, well happy birthday! I met Gazza and many other friends in 2007 at the Pilot Inn and have had many a wonderful time since then meeting great people through this site. Voodoo said "not enough time" how apt is that and so very true but someone said to me recently "make time"

I too don't remember at all how I found this place, but right from the start I knew it was THE one. I don't care if IORR or Shidoobee gets more frequent posts these days or whatever, this place has always been and will continue being the coolest, most laid-back, most fun forum to talk about the Stones and anything else for that matter.

I've made lots of great friends, shared my Stones obsession with like-minded lunatics, had arguments on politics ;D and laughed a lot.

Congratulations and thanks again Gazza & Gerardo. As I've said before without this place what was once a dream would not have become the reality that was the Enmore Theatre in 2003. (Thanks again too to Rik/moonisup and fmk who helped along the way).

In the days before smartphones, wifi and broadband there was dial-up.
It was in those dark days that in February of 1998 I put my site on line.

Rock’s Off was the first message board that I linked to on my links page.
That was some time in March of that year.
I think I found the place by way of something called “webrings”.

Fast forward eighteen years to March 17, 2016 and the gig at Mexico City.
Saint Patrick’s Day mind you.

It was at the pre-party that I finally met Voodoo (in his very own Wonderland)
A tune filled and festive atmosphere attended my meeting of this fellow, a fine host.

At this party I happened to win a bottle of tequila. It could not be taken into the
show nor could it travel well ten hours later when I would be hopping on a jet.

Voodoo was the best of guides on the way from the party to Foro Sol Stadium.
He knew where the correct door was to get to the floor level where it was that
we parted company.

It will be with hearty mirth that I will in later years recall what Voodoo said at
that juncture. You see he was in GC and I had Pit. Upon his realization of this
he (in full throated exclamation) gave forth with “YOU BASTARD!!!!!”

As I mentioned it is an old collage so in your case the answer is NONE, you're in. I have many pictures of you, just send the one you want and you will be there this weekend

I have plans to extend that image so add many more instead of replacing the old ones as they are part of our history but trust me I don’t have too much time as in the old days, but I have plans to retire soon so I will have even more time that in the old days.

In one week, we're going to celebrate our first 25 years with some events, like a LIVE radio program, an on-line videoconference party, and some more (maybe)

The date, July 14, 1998, was an estimate, as we didn’t think we're going to last so long LOL but according to Chief Moon, it was in May, anyway, the official day is July 14

So, I want to update this the "cover" of our main page with pictures of the current regulars, if you want to be there just send me your picture, could be here replying this message or by email (it’s on my profile voodoo at rocksoff dot org)

I doubt either of these pictures of me are acceptable,
but here ya go...

By way of background, I did these pics over ten years
ago, for iorr dot org. At the time, the two leading
news subjects were SuperHeavy and L'Wren Scott, and
my big mouth was of course participating heavily in
both discussions. Which led someone to ask "who the
fuck is this SuperRevvy guy?"

In response, I made my first and only video (music by
Joss Stone and Jeff Beck), with the first and last
images in the vid being self-portraits...

The first self-portrait is based on a picture I did of
Mick, combining him with the SuperHeavy tiger logo
(it's made to look different depending if your eyes
are close-up or backed-off)

So then I asked myself "if Mick is a majestic feline,
what am I by comparison?", and the obvious answer was
"a rodent".

Then the final image in the vid is simply me relaxing in
the backyard with a good book and my dearly departed
puppy dog "Luther"

In the late 90s in the UK using the internet was the price of a phone call. So we would try and limit our use until after 7 pm when the rate was cheaper. Invariably it was followed by an engaged tone because half of the US (who were getting online for almost nothing) were connecting at the same time. One night it actually took me two hours to get online! And if someone tried to phone you on your home phone it disconnected you! My wife went fucking ballistic when we got our first few phone bills after we got the internet.
