Got this today from the people at Historic Route 66:

To all users of the forum,

We will be shutting down the forum at https://forum.historic66.com/ on May
24th, 2018.

As a replacement, we will be providing our users and visitors with static
FAQ content on https://www.historic66.com/faq/ and move the questions and
help area to our new facebook group at
https://www.facebook.com/groups/historicroute66/ .

The reason for this move is twofold.
- First and foremost there is new legislation ("GDPR") in Europe coming
into effect on May 25th that is next to impossible to comply with for a
forum based on phpBB. The combination of software that's nowhere near up to
the extreme requirements of the regulations, the risk of monster fines (up
to 20 million EUR) is just not feasible for a small operation like we are.
- The second reason is a slowly declining participation of new users in our
forum. Forums are on the way out, social media have been replacing it
rapidly, and esp. for younger populations a forum isn't what they seek any
longer.
We do fully understand the irony of a law that's being sold to the public
as having the goal of protecting your privacy forcing us to make you give
up the safety we were offering and move instead to Facebook, which is not
particularly known for caring a lot about the privacy of its users.

We have looked at alternatives, but could not find any that would work out.
The legislation has a lot of press coverage -not always equally accurate-,
but in the end, the requirements of it are just not possible to be met with
the current versions of phpBB, nor is there any hope for a new version that
would allow it. Moreover, the legislation does require things of us that
are just not compatible with running a forum. Just as an example: it would
force us to wipe parts of discussions on a simple request of a user,
orphaning the rest of the discussions and removing the value that old
discussions have on forums for future visitors.

We have had prior changes in the past, and they each time turned out for
the better:
- The website started in 1994 and had a contact form for a while.
- The form was enhanced to become a guestbook in 1995
- In the fall of 2004, we couldn't fulfill the needs anymore with a
guestbook, and we migrated to a phpBB based forum
- And on May 24th, 2018 we'll move the forum to a facebook group.
So we ask you to visit our new facebook group, sign up and we'll see you on
the other side on or after the 25th.

There are obviously other facebook groups already active on various Route
66 topics. We, however, hope to create a friendly, open group where newbie
roadies can ask questions and get help as we have been doing on our forum
for quite some years. I sincerely hope we can retain the current moderators
during this move as well.

The website https://www.historic66.com/ will remain active, although it
will have some minor changes by May 25th as well to conform to the GDPR
requirements. It's only the forum part that will send you to the facebook
group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/historicroute66/ from then on.

One other concern is the unavailability of IPv6 websites on US IPv4-limited ISPs, now that IPv6 has become the new standard in Europe. Those reading IORR will know what I mean. Start harassing your US ISP for IPv6 connectivity.

Sucks. "World Wide Web" indeed! Years behind the times, at this rate. :-X

Part of the reason Iprefer a forum to FB is the anonymity.

Yeah...dont panic...getting an IPv6 address is easy...as a matter of fact, ANYONE can actually get their own IPv6 subnet. You will be able to then use your own network IP ( approx (18,446,744,073,709,551,616 or them).

Thats all the interweb geeking for me today...

Well, my ISP finally added IPv6, and, yes, entering the router commands was relatively easy, but:

The site I specifically wanted IPv6 for was blacked out for more than a year because, though I entered the commands last year, the ISP hadn't made the upgrade at its end, and never informed customers when it did.

That site I'm talking about only connects intermittently, and has disconnected once during a download. I can't connect today. This is like bad airwave TV, dependent on the weather.

So, other than all that, this World Wide Web thing is sweet.

One of the unspoken assumptions here is that ISPs don't believe their US customers care about communications out of Europe.

This is an example of how this is killing the old boards: I have received more pictures (from today's show) via WhatsApp from Estela and the guys from our message board in Spanish than pictures here and even in Facebook!

I think its because most people find it easier to post on FB. You can just upload your photos in one click rather than having to upload to a photobucket and then do all the steps to post a photo here. I used to post pics here all the time but now I don't do it because it takes too much effort and I've gotten lazier, sorry about that. However on FB everything is out there for the world to see and this place is more private, because you have to make more of an effort.

I refuse to be part of Facebook partly because of what it's done to traditional message boards.

Membership and posts have waned here over the years. If this board is to survive, I say ditch the Facebook page. IORR is flourishing with active topics, engaged members and up to the minute news and gossip.

They do not have a FB page!

RO is my Stones home and I do not want to have to go elsewhere.

I agree with Steel Wheels. I wish the FB page was dropped in favor of the forum, even though I'm on FB. I know I"ve said that I feel like I know you guys but I don't feel the same with the FB crowd that doesn't post here, and I prefer a little privacy online. I learned a hard lesson about putting my real name online 12 years ago, a lesson I won't soon forget. Thus, if the RO forum were to disappear, I'd disappear with it. The only person who's ever posted here that I'm in contact with on FB is gypsymofo.

VooDoo and Gazza PAY for the servers that handle this site...without asking for a dime from anyone...

its just that...build it and they will come...ignore it...and it will shut down...

I can talk STONES all day...but if I have to PM them on FB or Messenger...or GMAIL...or whatever...I will...because I know they will listen...also, because I have made personal freindships with them...and many others...

In general, its a different type of fan that uses facebook - the Stones own official social media sites are the same. They'll ask fans what songs they want the band to play and you guarantee that most of the replies are from people who apparently seem to be under the impression that the Stones wont play 'Brown Sugar' unless they're asked to do so on facebook.

The people who are still members here but who dont (or hardly ever) post anymore arent posting on the facebook page instead. They're mostly using their own pages, from what I can see.
