Title: Support Acts for No Filter
Post by Paranoid Android on Apr 5th, 2018 at 12:42pm
So, it was reported that the opening band for the show in Coventry will be The Specials!!! They hail from Coventry, so this makes perfect sense.

They are an amazing and energetic live act.

Has anyone else heard any other news concerning supporting acts in any other cities?

There are few times I wanted to see the opening band as  its too much of a time commitment for me to invest on a band I usually have not heard of...however...I would love to see a few bands give it their all for 30-45 min...The Vaccines, Bash & Pop, Paul Weller, The 1975
and one or two others come to mind...

I heard about six weeks ago that Snow Patrol were opening in Dublin.

Didnt know how credible it was but it may be significant that since then they've announced a string of 7 dates all over Ireland in 10 days from May 11 - 20.  They have three free nights in that schedule - one of them, May 17, is the night that the Stones play Croke Park.

The Specials are fantastic. Had they been confirmed as the opener at Coventry when the shows were originally announced, I'd have seriously considered doing that gig.

I haven't seen or listened to them in years...they played quite often in DC when I lived there.
The play in Dublin on the 15th...Wexford the 16th, and Galway the 18th, Belfast on the 20th......they may be able to squeeze in Croke Pk on the 17th...who knows?

WOW!
No news yet. I would have figured everyone's summer tour dates would be set by now...

I hope there in no last minute scramble and we end up with a reunion of The Commitments or some such nonsense. Excited for the Specials and those going to Coventry...

Keeping as far away from Mick's wandering eye and wildest fantasies, if theyve any sense

they reformed a couple of years back after the girls had a few babies I think, and released an album a few months ago

Irish support act for The Rolling Stones at Croke Park has been announced

The Academic

Sean O'Grady

April 23 2018

There's big news for The Academic today as they're revealed as the support act for The Rolling Stones's Croke Park gig.

The group, made up of Craig Fitzgerald, Dean Gavin and brothers Matt and Stephen Murtagh, will open for the iconic rockers on first night of their No Filter tour on May 17.

Originally from Mullingar, the group told how they discovered they were personally chosen by The Rolling Stones themselves to be their opening act.

"We found out last week when we were on tour in Paris. Our manager called us and was like, 'anyone who is not in the band, leave the room'. He told us over speaker phone. Minds blown. We couldn't believe it. It was insanity," they said.

"[Music promoter] Peter Aiken told us that the Stones, of all the acts that were put forward, picked us. They said they wanted an Irish band and that's just insane, to be picked personally by them."

The gig will be the biggest performance of The Academic's career so far, although they are not too nervous just yet.

"We have been lucky to support some of the most influential bands before like The Strokes but this is on another level. We're more excited than nervous, but nerves will probably kick in on the day," they told independent.ie.

The group, who are currently in the middle of a sold out UK tour, will play for about half an hour on stage from 7pm before The Rolling Stones perform.

They are keeping their fingers crossed they will get a chance to meet the group and thank them "endlessly" for the opportunity.

"We heard they have an entourage of about 200 people and ten trucks so it will be mayhem backstage. But we hope we get to meet them.

"It's a big opportunity, to get in front of so many people. We have been playing in Ireland for so long now and to play such a big place, it can only do good. So long as we're not terrible on stage," they said.

The Academic join a long list of heavyweight support acts joining the Stones on their No Filter tour.

Bit underwhelmed by the Dublin opener (to be honest, I dont know them - but good luck to the young lads, its a great gig for them)

Some really good openers for the UK leg.

I have no interest in seeing The Academics

I dont know who James Bay is
Elbow, I havnt heard from them since the 00's I think...any others would be great to see...especially The Vaccines ( I really love them) and The Specials.

I think its kinda funny that Ashcroft will open for them. I wonder if he will play Bitter Sweet Symphony...If he plays it, he may be playing for free that night,  ;D ;D ;D
