Title: The Stones win a Grammy for 'Blue & Lonesome'
Post by Gazza on Jan 28th, 2018 at 5:07pm
The Rolling Stones' return to their roots, Blue & Lonesome, has picked up the Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album. The award was given out at the Premiere Ceremony prior to tonight's telecast.

In the Best Rock Song category, Foo Fighters' "Run" beat out Metallica's "Atlas, Rise!" Metallica's Hardwired ... To Self-Destruct was also up for Best Rock Album, as was Queens of the Stone Age's Villains, but that award was won by the War on Drugs' A Deeper Understanding.

Randy Newman's song "Putin" also won for Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals. The song appeared on his most recent album, Dark Matter. Leonard Cohen's "You Want It Darker" earned a posthumous Grammy for Best Rock Performance.

Other than those awards, classic rock was shut out from this year's Grammys. Gregg Allman was nominated for Best Americana Roots Song ("My Only True Friend") and Best Americana Album (Southern Blood), but lost out in both to Jason Isbell ("If We Were Vampires" and The Nashville Sound, respectively).

The audiobook of Bruce Springsteen's autobiography, Born to Run, lost out to Carrie Fisher's The Princess Diaries in the Best Spoken Word Album category.

Hosted by Paul Shaffer, the Premiere Ceremony is currently taking place at the Theater at Madison Square Garden and is being streamed live on the Grammys website. Music is being provided by Shaffer's The World's Most Dangerous Band, and it's the first time the ensemble has performed together since The Late Show With David Letterman went off the air in 2015.

Later tonight, the Recording Academy will give out the Grammy for Best Rock Song, a category that includes Metallica's "Atlas, Rise!" and Foo Fighters' "Run." Metallica's Hardwired ... To Self-Destruct is also up for Best Rock Album.

The Meters win Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award

The Meters, fiery funkmeisters of New Orleans, will be awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award on Sunday (Jan. 28) during The Recording Academy ceremonies in Los Angeles. The show begins at 6:30 p.m. central time and will be shown in the New Orleans area on WWL television.

The band includes brothers Art and Cyril Neville, George Porter Jr., Leo Nocentelli and Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste. It helped establish the syncopated style that was the foundation of much New Orleans music from the mid-1960s onward.

In addition to their own recordings, the Meters were the musicians of choice for Allen Toussaint and Dr. John sessions. And they were admired by musicians around the world from Paul McCartney to the  Beastie Boys.

Also receiving Lifetime Achievement Awards are Hal Blaine, Neil Diamond, Emmylou Harris, Louis Jordan, Queen and Tina Turner.

Meanwhile, the TV audience gets to be "delighted" by the likes of Bruno Mars and some brilliant "musician" named "Lamar Kendrick".
Yawn.

Blues is and always has been a minor or 'niche' category, in fairness - and they did choose to make a non-mainstream album.

There are other more commercial genres than that one that end up in the pre-show id imagine.

It also might help if they showed up once in a while to these things. They may not put the award in the main show but it probably increases the chances. I am sure the industry is full aware that the Stones don't tend to show up for these things. When was the last time? MTV awards in 94 is what I remember and that was for lifetime achievement or something like that. I suppose it's a long climb down from their wallets.

Well I'm proud of them for winning a grammy, and MICK is in NYC this week so I'm sure he was there to celebrate and party.  There are photos of him having lunch in the city.

If Mick would have shown up to accept it. They would have put it in prime time.
