Please tell me why so many people hate YGMR so much.  It passes for the "hit single" on Voodoo Lounge (since the sub-midtempo groove of "Love is Strong" was hard for them to hit live, and ultimately forgettable).

I think it sounds bitchin' on Voodoo Lounge.  I used to think the lyrics were too simple, but I began to buy into their optimism - something I rarely buy into.  It fits in with "I Go Wild" and "Suck on the Jugular" - two songs that are borderline dicey themselves.

It's the closest thing they've got to Bon Jovi.  :blankfriggingstare1

It's one of Keith's best solos ever recorded. Charlie fires the engine and it's glorious. One of the best rockers!

Uninspired, almost contrived music.  This song is "phoning it in" on an album full of filler already.  Sadly, I don't think the Stones get the difference between YGMR and songs like If You Can't Rock Me or Crazy Mama, which at least sound like an effort was made.  I don't even think they get the chasmatic difference between YGMR and Brown Sugar.

YGMR is calculated, but so are Mixed Emotions and the hideous Sad, Sad, Sad - my least favorite stage number.  Good stage versions of YGMR beat any SSS any day.

There are a lot of good latter-day songs that rarely get performed, yet they seem to choose this one to 'showcase' the band's post-1981 output above all others.

Its a decent enough song on Voodoo Lounge but it simply doesnt deserve to have been as prominent in their repertoire as it has been.

Still, it could have been worse...Mick could have been imploring us to punch our fists in the air whilst shouting "Sharks Will Cry" for the last two decades. Be thankful for small mercies.

All right, two late developments:

1) The other night, I listened to Sad, Sad. Sad on The Complete Maine Road Tapes (Manchester, 1990, first night), and I actually felt some nostalgia and had a good time.  Wasn't expecting any of that.

2) The performance of YGMR on this tape from Denver, 1999, really kills it.  Nice Memory Motel.  Nice, sloppy Just My Imagination, Midnight Rambler, IORR.  Great sound, except for some unnecessary levels fiddling - all 1999 should be in this quality.

It's the chorus.  It would have been a decent track without two cliches repeated twice over and over.  I suspect it is so popular in the set list because it's easy for Keith to play.

Yep, forgot about that one.

Still doesn't quite qualify as an "anthem" for me, perhaps due to the fact that I was eight years old when that tune came out and pretty much grew up thinking of it as one of the classics of the 60s & 70s.

I wonder if the average music fan thinks of YGMR when they think of the Stones.
I can't remember the last time I heard YGMR on our local Classic Rock station.

I'd rather listen to Jagger recite Joey's posts from the Politics Thread than hear YGMR live again!!!  :o :o :o
