No doubt further info will be forthcoming

Intriguing titles :

Gotta Get A Grip / England Lost

Mick was reported to be filming a promo video for 'Gotta Get A Grip' earlier this week

I guess this means that we wont be getting that Stones studio album any time soon.....

This seems rather all outta the blue...at least to me, unless I missed some recent news...

How is he working on solo stuff with all this supposed work being done on the new album...walks in the park with the dancer and the child...the Jagger machine pens and records and is in pre-release mode  of 2 new songs ( that we know of) and the Stones machine pens....well...an unconfirmed amount, though rumored to be 10-15...since GRRRRR's D&G and OMS with no ETA established?!?

Same old smoke and mirrors from where I troll...

Maybe Sir Paul was right...concentrate on the older stuff...pull out a half dozen gems and KEEP them in the rotation...if  a Stones fan has NOT seen SMU, MY, SSC, HTW, TD by now...its THEIR OWN DAMN FAULT

Where IS that setlist bitching thread, anyways?!?

Can't wait to muse on & groove to these ditties.

Could 'England Lost' be a zeit-trousery track, with echoes of Dury's England's Glory, Milton's Paradise Lost. Rotten's England's Dreaming, Big Will's 'Love's Labours Lost' and Joyce Grenfell's Lost Song etc.?

Happy days.

I'm boycotting this shit.

This tune is what I referenced in the other thread. IORR is all over this one.

I'll bet anyone any amount of money that this new tune is going to be a hard rocker and we'll all be asking, "Why didn't he save this for the Stones?"

I'm fed up.

I wonder if this is associated with one of his dodgy films. The B side sounds soundtracky. If not, I'd love to hear his solo stuff. It is filled with feeble attempts at being current, but some of that stuff is wonderful. Sweet Thing is a perfect example.

What-is-the-point - - - - ?

Nobody cares about a new 'Mick Jagger' release right now... of any sort.

Folks care about New <Rolling Stones> Material... nothing else at the moment.

These guys are sure as F*******K in no hurry or rush to finish a Rolling Stones album now are they.

I gotta say .. this is ridiculous and I am sure Universal isn't very happy (which Mick hinted at last year).

I mean .. they are not exactly 27 .. and Universal (as well as fans) want an album.. Universals wanted an 'all new material' studio release for two years now .. Still no friggin sign of it.

Yet Mick's coming out with a single.. Uhhhhhh ...Ok ...Good One Mick?

Nobody Cares at the moment there Mick.. In fact this only leaves everyone more frustrated. Concentrate On Stones Material ..Thanks -

Point is, I doubt their is widespread interest from Universal or friends in a new Stones album. Other than diehards. I doubt seriously there is strong interest in new material. Universal is much more interested in the  back catalog and fans just want to hear Jumping Jack Flash again. So Mick flexs his creative juices. Such as they are..............And puts out a song or two. It'll get the same reaction as a new Stones album.............Oh and most importantly. You were wrong about about them being in the studio. ;D >:( :interestingstuffronnie :blankfriggingstare1

Hardly anyone over 16 buys or downloads singles. And they sure as fuck dont buy singles made by a 73 year old man.

Apparently there was another video being made for the B-side as well.

And as you'll see in the link I'm about to post below. it appears that there are more than these 2 songs in the pipeline....

Mick Jagger Spotted in the Studio With British Rapper Skepta
By Jeff Giles July 10, 2017 10:29 AM

While Rolling Stones fans wait to find out what’s happening with the band’s next album, singer Mick Jagger is busying himself with other projects — including studio time with British rapper Skepta.
Not yet a household name in the States, Skepta has been at the forefront of London’s grime scene for years, and won the prestigious Mercury Prize in 2016 for his fourth album, Konnichiwa. Although that album topped out at No. 160 on the U.S. chart, he’s increasing his profile on this side of the Atlantic, most recently through the release of his single “Hypocrisy.”
Without going into detail about whatever the duo might be up to, Skepta shared a photo of himself in the studio with Jagger, depicting what appears to be the two in the midst of a conversation with an unseen third party. The picture was taken by Midnight Studios founder Shane Gonzales, who Metro quotes as describing the session as “one of the most inspiring days of my life.”

If Skepta and Jagger are collaborating, it’s for a project that’s taken root very recently. Speaking with NME in May, the MC said that instead of focusing on his next album, he was “working on how I’m gonna do good for what’s happening on Earth at the moment,” adding, “At every stage of my life, I’ve always wanted to do good for Earth.” As far as millions of fans are concerned, getting Jagger in front of a microphone definitely fits that description.

he can release a single and Stones release new stuff, later.
How is this mutually exclusive?

Keith put out a solo album and Stones put out a record 2015, and 2016.... this is just a single... we could see an album, and if we don't.
Oh well...

He did. He's been working on a Stones album on and off for a year and a half.

Maybe he just has a LOT of songs and some of them aren't suitable for a Stones project.

'Gotta Get A Grip' (a little twist on or little echo of 'Gotta Get Away'?) will hopefully be as hot as Garbine Muguruza.

Given the gripping reference, could this be a tune about tennis, golf, cricket or masturbation?

Is it the summer of Pouff, the summer of Muff or the summer of Nuff?

It's all fairly exciting.

HaaaaHaha . Thanks for making me laugh. In the absence of new Stones entertainment material I'm appreciative of entertainment from y'all.

Also, ya...funny what you, Edith Grove say about wondering what Keith will have to say about all this...and, mojoman: ya "fire up the presses"! Haaaaa ha!

I CAN'T IMAGINE how hard it will be for Keith to not react, out loud, verbally, "on the record" so to speak, meaning to the media, with such a temptation this likely might present.

Some Guy: Haa ha ha--- ya, "embrace the suck"-but if this sounds like RAP CRAP I fear Mick has gone tooooo far this time.... after 55 years of not making TOO bad of musical missteps, he has to falter this badly -OH  Noooooo! Noooooo!

Also, Some Guy: I agree with your comment to"just release it already, let's get this shit over with." Pullin' the covers over my head until this incident passes.

Steel Wheels and everyone here who finds this painful, perhaps this is a time to go into collective mental denial of the entire event

Err...
'Shattered'? (Which pretty much invented or defined urban rap lyricism)
'Too Much Bloodclaat'?
And so forth.

And just because MJ is using a grime producer doesn't (necessarily) mean it will be rap or grime, or rap or grime as we know it.

As long as it's good, I have no problem with anything, including rap. The problem is that there is very little good out there and most of Mick's attempts at this type of stuff are awful. Superheavy was dismal.

However, without Mick's willingness to experiment, the Stones wouldn't even be 1/10 of the band that they are. He has always done this from the band's earliest days and always will. Out of it comes some magical stuff so I don't mind that he tries, but I don't always like it.

I agree.
I never woulda NEVER thought there would come a day, no matter what, when Mick Jagger and RAP would ever cross paths in composing.

Actually, in Anybody Seen My Baby (1997), Bernard does a little rap.

We came to rock for Brooklyn

And The Bronx, And Staten Island
I can't forget New Jersey, and Long Island
And all over the world, we came to rock for everybody like just this.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

to waitering: ^^^Indeed!^^^ STEAMS!  :)

I really like both of these songs including all of the different versions -3 for Gotta Get a Grip & 2 for England Lost per YT. All of them "rock" in that new kind of way== (I'm showing my age here.)

"Grip's" rousing, energetic beat and exhortation "to get a grip" is having a good, energizing effect on me right now, which I've been needing. BADLY NEEDING.

Who knows..maybe if I keep playing this today I'll actually break my 3 year run of being exercised-blocked. :) (Now where did I put my stationary bike?)

As usual, Mick's lyrics still contain some sarcastic humor:

Grip-- "Intellectuals, shut your mouth!"

England may have lost but imo Jagger scores here.

I still can't see or hear anyone's posting of videos here nor can I post any-- still getting only the white, blank rectangles

I don't think this version of the version of England Lost has been posted here yet

'Rolling Stone' interview

Mick Jagger Gets Political, Addresses U.K. 'Anxiety' on Two New Songs

‘’We obviously have a lot of problems," Rolling Stones singer says of "England Lost" and "Gotta Get a Grip." "So am I politically optimistic? … No"

By Jon Blistein

Mick Jagger unveiled two politically charged new songs, "England Lost" and "Get a Grip." The Rolling Stones singer said he penned the tracks in response to the "anxiety [and] unknowability of the changing political situation." He added, "We obviously have a lot of problems. So am I politically optimistic? … No."

"England Lost" boasts a bluesy breakbeat and finds Jagger recounting the story of a disappointing the real football match, which serves as an analogy for this "difficult moment in our history." He continued, "It's about the unknowability about where you are and the feeling of insecurity. That's how I was feeling when I was writing. It's obviously got a fair amount of humor because I don't like anything too on the nose but it's also got a sense of vulnerability of where we are as a country."

The noir-style video for "England Lost" follows a jittery businessman who discovers he's being followed after leaving work. A chase ensues as the man runs through London then out into the countryside where things get even weirder. The man is hit by a bicyclist, then a car, then dashes into the ocean where he's apprehended by two men who drag him ashore. The townspeople surround him and a little girl tells him flat out, "Pull yourself together."

"Gotta Get a Grip," is a grittier dance rock tune, though it too has a sinister edge. The video is set in an opulent nightclub where extravagance and excess reach a boiling point and explode into chaos while Jagger rails against everything from greed to xenophobia. "Everybody's stuffing their pockets, everybody's on tape," he sneers. "The news is all fake/ Let 'em eat chicken and let 'em eat steak/ Let 'em eat shit, let 'em eat cake."

Of the track, Jagger said, "The message I suppose is – despite all those things that are happening, you gotta get on with your own life, be yourself and attempt to create your own destiny."

Jagger said he wrote "Gotta Get A Grip" and "England Lost" in April and chose to release them as standalone tracks rather than waiting to put them on a full album. "It's always refreshing to get creative in a different fashion and I feel a slight throwback to a time when you could be a bit more free and easy by recording on the hoof and putting it out there immediately," he said. "I didn't want to wait until next year when these two tracks might lose any impact and mean nothing."

Jagger also spoke about his current musical tastes, noting he'll often make playlists filled with recommendations from young family members with old favorites. "I listen to R&B and pop and strange mixes of old and new and then like everyone I make my own random playlists," he said. "The last things I added to a list were Kendrick Lamar, Skepta, Mozart, Howlin’ Wolf, Tame Impala, obscure Prince tracks and classic soul stuff from The Valentine Brothers. I really like Kendrick Lamar; he’s also talking about discontent and he really nailed it. I thought his stuff, and what [British rapper] Skepta is doing, are very interesting and pretty much on the button.’" Skepta will appear on a "reimagined" version of "England Lost."

On first listen, I quite like the music on both of them. 'England Lost' more so. Reminds me of 'Rain Fall Down' a bit.

When I hear that riff on 'Gotta Get A Grip' though, I just wonder what it would sound like coming from Keith and co.

Not so fussed on the quality of the lyrics or even the singing, though.

Always good to hear Mick playing harmonica on anything.  He's fabulous. Carrying on where he left off on 'Blue & Lonesome'

Fair play to him at 74 for doing something contemporary and topical even if its hardly an example of an artist at the top of his game.

The opening lines of 'England Lost' are a wonderful example of Mick's self deprecating humour, referencing his reputation as a 'jinx' when following the England football team.  ;D

Havent heard the remixes yet.

I think it's cool Jagger did something cool and experimental but I must say .. song wise.. they are fair at best. These are mostly ideas / grooves with loads of production in making songs out of them. They are not so much songs themselves .. At least not in the vane I know the guy can write songs in.

They won't do anything chart's wise or sell well at all ... so I must ask myself .. What's the point here with these two? Seem to be mere throw away side B grooves simply with souped up / loads of production in order to make actual releases out of them. I could be a lot more impressed .. ...

They feel thrilling, funny and dandy to me.
But while enjoying things viscerally, from the trousers upwards, it still seems possible to jabber out some thoughts.
Each verse of 'Gotta Get A Grip' takes a diff approach - the first: general semi-cliched impressions of the zeitgeist; 2nd verse: the feelings/attitudes of the bankery types (etc.) expressed in 'Rain Fall Do'; 3rd verse: attempts to get a grip in (or after) a love affair; then - after a smile (in the video) from Jemima Kirke (of 'Girls', who put a cute version of 'Foo' To Cry' on their soundtrack) - in verse 4 it goes off for a while with a rap rocket with assorted anxieties about the mo' world. The video appears in part to be about intoxication to deal with life, a la 'Might As Well Get Ju''. There's modern takes on Gimme Shelter' here and many other Jaggerian flavours.

'England Lost' is poss even more interesting, with elements of ''It Must Be Hull' (the Voltaire philosophy of cleaning up the back garden and not locking the door) and ecgoes of 'War Baby' in the video partularly and the film 'Enigma'. The character in the video appears to pass thru the gate of the Foreign Office (where the young Jogger once wanted to work). He's running thru Richmond Park, keen on the English countryside. Elsewhere he's regretting seeing less his ghirlfriends in Euro cities. The video seems to start off as a Ian Dury 'Jack Shit George'-esque tease yet understanding of the common folk.    ....?

And loads more here, surely?
Lovely.

Dear sirmoonie, I noticed Mick's English accent coming through more than usual it seems, especially when he speaks more than sings that sarcastically funny line right after singing "It wasn't much of a game. I got soaked" --
"I didn't want to come anyway".  ;)

New songs take a while to sink in but I generally like Mick's swing to a slightly grittier edge. Also, his political/social commentary is always insightful. And it is a rare song with him playing harp that is weak.

Dont know about three-quarters but we've certainly had four fifths on solo songs before (which is a higher %)

Ronnie's solo albums,. before and after he joined the band, have a smattering of Stones on them

On the 'Gimme Some Neck' album, Mick Charlie and Keith are there at various stages and all three of them (as well as Woody of course)  are on "Buried Alive"

(none of them are in the promo video though , erroneously credited here to The New Barbarians. Ringo isnt on the record, either)

Keith, Ronnie and Charlie are all on this (the b-side of 'Run Rudolph Run')

Not only that Gazza, but Charlie Watts actually played on every Ronnie Wood studio album from Gimme Some Neck to Slide on This. Mick was heavily involved with I've Got My Own Album To Do as were Keith and Mick Taylor.

It's just the three originals who have kept to themselves on their solo stuff although Charlie had Bernard Fowler for that jazz album. That is why it's interesting that Mick did it this way. The songs sound better and grittier which is a nice turn that Mick has taken with Blue and Lonesome and these songs.

Just wanted to say that TOMORROW ( Fri Aug 11), my Glimmer Twins will play during their weekly show (The Salt & Pepper Show) Gotta Get A Grip (Original and SEEB remix) to discuss each...a compare/contrast discussion...

The play pop, rock, Latin pop and talk about whatever comes to mind...
It will only be part of the hour long show...please tune in via stream...A few of you have already listened to their show and your feedback was tremendous...

My Glimmer Twins turn 12 next month and have been hosting their own show for a few weeks (When sleep-away camp was not getting in the way)

Fri 4pm-5pm EST [GMT-4]

Special shout out to all of RockOff will be heard!!

They were hoping to have the World Premiere of the singles on July 21...but that release was delayed a week and they were already away at camp by the time it was released the following Friday.

Thanks for listening!!

It's unfortunate that a more fuillsome extended version of Gotta Get A Gripe isn't available.

The songs bombed. They aren't even a footnote in his career. It's over.

Time for No Filter.
