Title: The Space Thread (nsc)
Post by Starbuck on Jan 16th, 2017 at 4:05pm
RIP Eugene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon. Very sad.

While we're at it, anyone else up for a space thread? I am rapidly turning into a rabid astronomy nerd.

Is Cadet status required ?

Did you know "cadet" in Latin means "he will fall"?

I don't think cadet or mission specialist status is necessary. Just a healthy curiosity about science and the unknown and a distaste for the Eagles and clips of "Dallas".

I just watched a 45 minute documentary on gamma ray bursts called "The Real Death Star" on Netflix. Holy shit! That's some power!

If god is out there, that Hubble telescope will catch a glimpse of him, surely.  That thing can see behind any interstellar cloud of galaxies.  You could find the planet Kolob with that goddam thing!

I still don't like the decision to de-planetize Pluto.

The nearest solar system with possible life as we know it, is 4.2 light years away, so no chance of meeting goddam aliens any time soon.  Unless they travel to us, but as Hawking said, if they are here, they probably want to rape and kill us, so it's probably best that we are way the fuck out of any serious part of the Milk.

Q: "Name three famous Mickeys"

A: "Uh, uh, Mickey Rooney, uh, uh Mickey Mantle, uh, uh Mickey Way!  Mickey Way, you know, the galaxy.  Judge take that, won't they?"

moonpoof, please be advised that steven hawking is already on this alpha centauri business. dude is making a starship that will travel up to 20% the speed of light and will be to AC in 20 years. of course, the "ship" is the size of a credit card, but it has cameras. alien porn....within our grasp.

50 years ago today, Gus Grissom, Roger Chaffee and Ed White were killed in a simulation fire, thereafter dubbed "Apollo 1".

http://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/world/nasa-displays-apollo-capsule-hatch-50-years-after-fatal-fire/ar-AAmf1z9

Grissom, of course, was one of the Mercury 7 astronauts and the second American into space. White did the first extra vehicle spacewalk on the Gemini program.

I actually read that a few years ago and there are some important generalized benefits there no doubt. My point is though could the money have been spent on ...oh.....curing cancer, securing borders, infrastructure repairs etc.....Always though the space thing was more about Ego than substance...just my opinion
