Title: Do we still hate the Eagles? (nsc)
Post by Starbuck on Jun 8th, 2014 at 10:00pm
Ladies and gentlemen

Listening to Steve Young's "Rock Salt and Nails" this evening and just wondering what the prevailing winds are concerning the Eagles. I personally have never stopped hating that insipid band, although the more music I listen to and the older I get, the less I completely despise them. After all, they did have sense enough to record good songs from time to time, like Young's "Seven Bridges Road", and Johnny Cash did do "Desperado" some justice.

Am I getting soft? After all…

There are way much more hateful things in this world. Like Hitler, pedophiles, the KKK, corridas de toros, the dry law, mexican politicians, Adam Sandler movies, SuperHeavy, gangsta rap, brats that throw tantrums in public spaces or Youtube ads.

Indeed. I can't seem to work up a strong opinion one way or another.

Now Clapton...oh boy...

I use to love to get to the set position  for Peaceful Easy Feelin, it was in my bands set list, perfect song to light up, have a drink and put it on auto pilot.
Other than that, IMO, they were a girls band,
and I never got very excited about them or their music. As a cover band in the 70's and 80's, we played eagles music to please the crowd. Peaceful Easy Feelin was a "Belly rubber" we had 4 of them one per set. It was a chance to come down, give everyone in the crowd a chance to visit the bar, visit the bathroom, etc.
By the way Beast Of Burden was 1 of the other 3. That one was "Not" a auto pilot song though. Very drum lead!

Photos emerged of The Rolling Stones front man shacking up with a young brunette in a Zurich hotel last weekend — about three months after his longtime girlfriend, fashion designer L’Wren Scott, committed suicide. Her sister Jan Shane was outraged at the rocker for moving on so quickly: 'And people wonder why L’Wren was so depressed?'   "

Rush actually have musical talent. Some would argue that they have so much musical talent that their respective instrumentalists are the best in the business. Geddy Lee was often listed up there with Entwistle and Macca as being the best bassist in rock, and the same could be said for Peart.

Even if you don't like their music, or Geddy's "clothespin on the testicles" vocal range, you have to give it up for their musicianship.

To repeat myself, the Eagles always seemed the band directly opposite to the Rolling Stones.  All the things that drew me to the Rolling Stones - inspiration, integrity, depth, soul, influences, talent, musicianship, knowledge, growth, sweat, actual good songs - the Eagles thing seems to be almost deliberately against all of that.

My naive belief in joining these Rolling Stones boards, dedicated to a band that hasn't put a decent out in 30+ years, was that there was some discerning taste regarding rock music, based on what was and what is.  You were someone I could discuss music with, learn from.  That was true for the most part, and it happened in spades.

So what is an Eagles fan doing here?   What don't you Eagles fans like? List that out.  What is the point of caring about rock music, if you are an Eagles fan?

You mean, by ripping off other acts. Charging ridiculously stupid amounts of money. Ripping off their fans blind? Then you are correct sir. These are YOUR Rolling Stones.

hate is a strong word, it means you care one way or the other.
I don't care so I don't hate, I just dont care. in the Kilroy casa, there are 2 albums for them eagles. 2 out of 1000's
They were bought to learn songs to perform.
I do kinda like James Dean!
and I like Joe Walsh stuff!

I was careful to insert the comment about no decent albums in 30 years, to limit my overall comment to the great characteristics of the Rolling Stones (best band ever?) in certain albums, and to avoid precisely your type of rebuttal post.  Yes, I know they are a ripoff act now, and have been for a long time.

If you feel that way in totality about the Rolling Stones (best band ever?) why have you been a regular for so long?  I'm not being demeaning, but sounds like you need an Eagles board.  It appears there are a lot of people here who could point you to one!

all neil peart did his whole life was rip moonie and bill bruford, both who piss on him. geddy lee's voice in all of its phases is annoying, and entwistle also pisses on him. the serbian dude, well, dunno, maybe he's masochistic and likes to hang out with these two chumps?
for good prog, try king crimson from 1973 (when bruford got in) till nowadays - which is bound to be completely nuts, what with fripp teaming with mel collins (sax player from the 1970-72 bands), the dude from 21st century schizoid band (a band comprised of '69-72 kc members playing the old tunes) replacing adrian belew on guitar and vocals, good old tony levin and THREE drummers. fripp may be a tool, but he's got a good knack for doing good music, especially if you like codeine.

sorry for the bad english but i'm a brazilian and i'm too lazy to use capital letters. on occasion. ummm, yeah.

Is Best of My Love the song that Eagle types hold out as exemplar, Joey?  I thought it was New Kid in Town?  I'm just pointing that out to you, as a friend.

Warm stench of ecolepiss rising up in the air, pink champagne on ice - I like all that Satan stuff, must admit.  Eagle beef!  Beef eagle monger.  Are you an Eagle monger, Joey?  Do you make it a mission to flog the Eagles?  We are all brothers under the skin, we must learn to respect the stupid opinions of inferior human beings.

It wouldve been polite if that band had told the world 'look, there's been a mistake...we suck. We are not worth a tenth of the vinyl you are printing our shitty songs on.'

I would have had respect for that. But they chose a different path and decided it would be a great idea to bore everyone to death with their crap.

So the correct answer is obviously the first one.

By the time of Hotel California, the Eagles had honed their superb craft to such a degree, that they seemed capable of anything.  The Eagles went to their roots, to create what is arguably rock and roll's greatest album.  This was their "Exile moment.". The career defining title track is a swirling tale of ambivalence orchestrated over stunning Frey guitar. With New Kid in Town, the band hit their creative peak.  Never before had.......

How the fuck would anyone try to write a review for anything this pathetic group of twats did?  I'm good, but not that good.  "This band sucked, their massive popularity is another example of America's endless bad taste and fat ignorance.  Fear ye who tread into stagnant Eagle waters, you may not like what you come out as."

I don't like about %99 of their music.

And if I hear Desperado again, I will do Desperado on someone's ass.

I respect them, but don't like them much, no big deal, just say no or change the song/dial to some better music.

The Eagles are neither here nor there. I reckon they're the template for all those current alt country/"roots" bands like Tryin Adams, Jason Isbell, Iron and Whine, and all those very sincere young dudes with ironic beards, plaid flannel shirts, spectacles that they don't need, acoustic guitars and the occasional banjo or fiddle or doodley-doodley Clapton-esque guitar lead, and lyrics concerning heartache and vague notions of society's ills.

The Eagles actually sound very contemporary. They should sell millions of downloads.

Them Eagles are vapid regurgitation and blandness...a foreshadowing of today's [pop]ular music.

Much like Disney, McDonald's is a very litigious conglomerate and would not think twice about disassociating itself with the comparison by instituting proceedings...

Assuming that "Take It Easy" is the biggest selling cheeseburger in the Eagles canon, they have sold a mere 140 million worldwide...and debate rages as to how many units sold were actually the Chicken Nuggets, or "Hotel California" if you will...

At McDonald's, the same delicious burger that boasts equal amounts of American ingenuity and collaborative content as "Take It Easy" has passed the 100 Billion mark. In fact it no longer tracks sales in the millions as the Eagles Corp does...

This leaves us placing the Eagles onto a world stage they have yet to earn through marketing, hard work and greasy up-sales.

McDonald's moves that the Eagles appear to be more of a Pizza Hut or even a Costco Hot Dog rather then the delicious and genetically wholesome 300 calorie cheeseburger served to billions and billions

The Eagles, for fucking Christ's sakes.  There was a time this board would have been all over this.  Those days, like the Stones' best days, are moof.

my god moonie. you've stumbled onto something here. have we become that lame that one of our regulars has claimed to like the eagles? what has happened to us? what happened to that rocks off moxie of about 2005/2006, when a man could feel proud to return to his hotel, open up the goddamned mini bar and pop in dirty work? have we really sunk this low?

"One of our regulars"?  Starloaf, by my count, there is now close to a dozen that have publicly admitted to this behavior and interest.  There are several more that I suspect.  I'll send you the composite list via backchannel.  Do not be surprised to see Eagles set list posts and Eagles birthday threads very soon, my friend.  It's coming.

" .......  was around this time that Henley seduced Stevie Nicks, hoping to sabotage Fleetwood Mac's Rumours tour by repeatedly flying her out to "visit" him when she was supposed to be performing. Fleetwood Mac was the only act outselling the Eagles at the time and Henley decided it was time to TAKE THEM DOWN. So he took Stevie, never dreaming that it was she who was sabotaging the Hotel California tour when her "visits" left him too exhausted to walk, much less drum.

The rest of the band was infuriated. Even so, Frey selflessly tried to help by offering to share Stevie with Henley in order to conserve Henley's energy. Unfortunately for Frey, Stevie took one look at the scrawny guy and, after laughing her butt off, said "Dream on, loser." Henley's gratification after hearing this said to Frey was too intense for words, and he now decided he was the most talented man who ever lived, period.

It all went downhill from there. In 1980, Don Henley and Glenn Frey experienced several creative differences of opinion which resulted in several discussions in which they decided to terminate each oth- uhm, their partnership. In these discussions, they communicated to each other the intense passions and feelings of displeasure which they felt due to these creative differences by such exchanges as "YOU SUCK" and "YOU SUCK HARDER!" They decided to break up the band until such time as Hell froze over.  "

I like to sing along with the Eagles when I hear them on the radio, they have some good songs and good harmonies, some clever lyrics here and there.
'You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave'

'seems like every form of refuge has its price, you cant hide your lying eyes'

'you may lose or you may win, but you will never be here again, so open up I'm climbing in' That's hot!

and my favorite, Life in the fast Lane! They didn't care they were just dying to get off! Everything, all the time...lines in the mirror, lines on their face, they pretended not to notice...surely make you lose your mind!

***************  " SIGH !!!! "  ****************

The Following Moonie   ......

The FOLLOWING !!!!!  :

" Late in 1975, Henley became involved with Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac, a relationship that made headlines.  "

" Nicks had begun her singing career in San Francisco in the late sixties, met guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, and moved with him to Los Angeles, where they tried to break into the new spawning ground for mainstream rock. In 1975, they met drummer Mick Fleetwood, shortly thereafter joined him in the tenth configuration of his group, and recorded the groundbreaking Fleetwood Mac . Released on Warner/Reprise in August of 1975, it charted for over a year and sent the band on the road for an extended tour.

One night, Henley, long an admirer and aware of the competition between the two bands for best-selling album of the year, decided to pick up the phone and call Nicks, even though they'd never ment or talked to each other before. The two hit it off, and a series of intense wherever-you-are-I'll-find-you calls ensued, during which they commiserated on the loneliness of the long-distance rock-star lifestyle. Henley, still full of Rodkin, found a sympathetic soul in Nicks, who'd recently split from Buckingham. How much worse off was she, Nicks asked Henley, having to perform with her ex every night?

Inevitably, the two groups played the same cities. Knowing Henley was planning to make an appearance backstage one night, Mick Fleetwood and John and Christine McVie of the Mac decided to play a little joke on Nicks by sending her a bouquet of flowers with a card "signed" by Henley that read, "The Best of My Love...Tonight? Don..." A highly offended Nicks fumed over what she considered Henley's arrogance, until he convinced her he had nothing to do with the prank. The two then began a serious two-year affair.

Nicks remembered it this way. "When Lindsey and I broke up during Rumours , I started going out with Don...He was really cute, and he was elegant. Don taught me how to spend money. I just watched him, that's how. He didn't visibly set out to do that. I just watched him. He was okay with, say, buying a house [just] like that, or sending a Lear jet to pick you up.

"He is sexy. He's such an interesting guy. Here's one thing that Don did that freaked my band out so much. We were all in Miami, Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles. They're recording at this gorgeous house they'd rented on the water. It's totally romantic, like Mar-a-lago. Anyway, he sends a limousine driver to our hotel with a box of presents for me, and they delivered it right into the breakfast room where everyone's eating. There's a stereo, a bunch of fabulous records. There's incredible flowers and fruits, beautiful... The limousine driver is taking all this out onto the table, and I'm going 'Oh, please, please, this is not going to go down well.' And they want to know who it's from. And Lindsey is not happy... So I went out with Don for a while. I went out with J.D. Souther for a while [as well]. We had an incredible time. Those Eagles were an interesting group of guys."

She became pregnant, and neither doubted Henley was the father. The "situation" was resolved quickly and quietly when Nicks, between tour dates, had an abortion. Although Henley did not try to force the issue, according to friends, she was deeply upset about what she considered his fast and easy consent to her decision. Nicks took it as Henley's way of saying he wasn't intersted in any type of serious long-term commitment. As had become his pattern, in the beginning Henley played the ultimate Southern-charm gentleman -- flowers, phone calls, words of love, Lear jets to Paris for romantic dinners. In the end he was distant, unreachable, brooding, argumentative, and elusive. It was a pattern by now so familiar to the Eagles crew it had become a running joke. Henley's favored method of seduction became to be known as "Love 'em and Lear 'em".

Years later, Henley had this to say about his affair with Nicks: "[Stevie had] named the unborn kid Sara, and she had an abortion." She then wrote the song of the same name (which became a huge hit for her) and, according to Henley, dedicated it "to the spirit of the aborted baby".

Page 168

(Note: They're talking about how the band changed after Hotel California .)

It was a feeling that couldn't have been helped when Rolling Stone published the results of its second Annual Readers' Poll, and the Artist of the Year award went to the Eagles' chief competitiors, Fleetwood Mac. Runners-up included Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Peter Frampton, and Stevie Wonder. Male Vocalist went to James Taylor, who beat out Jackson Browne. Female Vocalist went to Linda Ronstadt, with Stevie Nicks coming in second. "Dreams", Fleetwood Mac's hit single off their Rumours album, beat out "Hotel California" (second) for Best Single of the Year. Band of the Year also went to Mac, the Eagles again coming in second. Rolling Stone's poll accurately reflected the difference between the popularity of the Eagles and Fleetwood mac. The British-American group would always have a broader if less intense following. Quite simply, the presence of Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie was what seperated the men from the boys. The eagles' primary audience ranged across the board, if more single male adolescent than boomer couples. If Mac also "aged" more gracefully, it was because the music it made came from the real-life drama of its romantic relationships, while the songs of the Eagles seemed by comparison to come from loners, not-so-young men acting like teenage boys still on the sexual make  "

Joey, all rock critics of any significance seem to have come down very hard your Eagle band.  Does that galvanize you and make you love the Eagles more than ever?  Do you type of people consider being trashed on the merits some kind of badge of honor, kind of like how Christians and the Kiss Army react to their criticisms?    Or is it more a sad feeling?

The mentality and ability displayed in that very video is why the Eagles are probably the most hated band in rock history by people who actually care about rock, make it part of their lives.  That's drunk Southern California housewife music, dude.  Staring out the window at the backyard above ground pool, tear in her eye, wondering why her kids are so fat and her husband's weekend shorts go below his knees, type music.  Cheap talking wine music.  Fish music, linoleum margarine ketchup.  You are not proving up your case here.  Piss poor.  Poor piss.  Piss face.  Face o' fish.  Fish music.  Fat music.  Fish fat.

Woman Stabs Roommate for Refusing to Stop Listening to The Eagles

Police in South Carolina arrested a North Charleston woman Monday night after she allegedly stabbed her roommate multiple times for refusing to stop playing music by the classic rock band The Eagles.

According to the official report, Vernett Bader, 54, became irritated with her 64-year-old roommate (and one-time boyfriend) after he rejected her pleas to turn off the Eagles and told her to "shut up."

Bader then entered the kitchen and grabbed a serrated knife, which she subsequently used to stab her roommate several times in the arm, hand, and elbow.

The roommate and his brother managed to wrestle the knife away from Bader, but she quickly retrieved another from the kitchen.

All three were intoxicated at the time, per the report.

It's unclear which of the band's songs drove Bader over the edge, but police have narrowed down the possible suspects to "Witchy Woman," "Take It Easy," "Peaceful Easy Feeling," "Take It to the Limit," "One of These Nights," "Tequila Sunrise," and "Hotel California" on repeat.

Bader confessed to the crime, but claimed it was an act of self-defense to counter her roommate's choking.

Investigators say Bader did not have any visible marks on her neck.

Police charged Bader with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature and she was booked into the Charleston County jail, where she remained held as of this afternoon.

That's beautiful.
That's the name that fits the mug shot.

Nor is there any surprise the 3 were intoxicated at the time of the incident.  There was never any doubt.

And you gotta respect her loyalty to the cause.
She could have taken the knife to the music system, but did not.  She knew that she had to eradicate the Eagles fan.  Then the stereo is free to play something more appropriate.

The author of that article put the Eagles on the same list as Bon Jovi, Creed and Nickelback.  He's not the first to put the Eagles in that type of company.  I doubt Eagles fans understand that to be a comprehensive insult either.  After all, Bon Jovi and Creed have some songs on the radio too.

sirmoonie, we know that the Eagles are not a good band. It doesn't matter if they are popular. Jesus is popular. Mel Gibson's Passion of The Christ is popular. Just let it go.

So Jesus, Gibson and the Eagles have something in common. And the Beatles and sex are popular too. It depends on how they are represented by the media. For instance, the oldest of my nephews, who wants to study music, says he doesn't know who the Beatles are. And they always have they nose close to their stupid i-phone machines. Why is that? Because the media is causing people to stop thinking.

We still need a political thread. That would be entertaining. I miss Riffhard, and I'm a bit drunk.

So you got your own Eagle thread, Joey.  Well done, my friend.  Superlative.  Exemplary!  The Eagles, even more than Three Dog Night, can truly lay claim to the title of The Great American Rock Band.

It is a given that people hate bon jovi, just like we hate cancer, parasites, frank thorogood, sobriety, pope porn, stale popcorn and busch light. the eagles, however, are more in the grey area….their witchcraft and complete suckdom cannot be spotted as easily by true rock and roll fans.

A must read:

http://www.salon.com/2013/08/08/quit_defending_the_eagles_theyre_simply_terrible/

"As their career progressed, the Eagles shed much of their country aspects, with only their fairly bland harmonies remaining. They became high priests of lowest-common-denominator rock, crafting studiously inoffensive rock designed to appeal to the broadest swath of the record-buying, radio-listening public. And perhaps that’s why Jeffrey Lebowski and so many of us continue to villainize the Eagles: They didn’t stand for anything. They lacked the outrage that drove John Fogerty’s music and Gram Parsons’ unwavering belief that the answers were blowing in the hickory wind. Their hedonism was never as much fun as Marc Bolan’s, and their desperadoes had no code of honor like Willie Nelson’s redheaded stranger or Townes Van Zandt’s Pancho and Lefty. The Eagles may have decried record industry avarice on “Hotel California,” but they were already the multi-headed beast at the head of that table. Don Henley may have transformed himself into a public scold, but his ecological concerns, however valid, never informed the music he made with the band or as a solo artist.

The Eagles’ legacy is selling a lot of records. All the reappraisals in the world won’t change that."
-----
“They were rich hippies. They were virtuosos in an idiom that did not require virtuosity. They were self-absorbed Hollywood liberals. They were not-so-secretly shallow. They were uncaring womanizers and the worst kind of cokehead. They wanted to be seen as cowboys, but not the ones who actually road horses. They never rocked, even after adding Joe Walsh for that express purpose (the first forty-five seconds of ‘Life in the Fast Lane’ are a push). They lectured college kids about their environmental footprint while flying around in private jets. They literally called themselves ‘The Eagles.’”

Ex-Iron Maiden Guitarist Says He Was Fired for Liking the Eagles

by Jeff Giles September 2, 2014 11:41 AM

YouTube

Are the Eagles indirectly to blame for one of Iron Maiden‘s earliest lineup changes?

That’s the allegation made by former guitarist Dennis Stratton, whose brief tenure with the band lasted just long enough for him to contribute to their 1980 self-titled debut album. Following a series of tour dates in support of Kiss and Judas Priest, Stratton was fired and replaced with Adrian Smith, who joined in time to play on the 1981 follow-up, ‘Killers.’ As Stratton sees it, it was his fondness for what he calls “easy listening music” that prompted manager Rod Smallwood to call for his dismissal.

“I always take a little stereo away with me,” he recalled during an appearance on the Gary Bushell Talk Show (which you can listen to below via Classic Rock Magazine). “The stuff I was playing at the time was Whitesnake, the Eagles, George Benson, Steely Dan — easy-listening music, just to relax to. I was playing it in my hotel room and Rod heard it. He came in and started bawling and shouting. He said, ‘If anyone walks past this door and heard the Eagles coming out of this room, it’s going to cause trouble with the band.’ I went, ‘Don’t be stupid’ – but these silly little things started to niggle him. He would never give me credit for being responsible for my own actions. It went on and on and on.”

That kind of thing was par for the course in a situation where, according to Stratton, “There wasn’t a lot of friendship … there was no bond,” but he still ended up being part of a project in the ’90s with his fellow Maiden alum, singer Paul Di’Anno. As he relates in the interview, that attempt at working together also ended in disaster, with Di’Anno allegedly committing an assault that Stratton says he’s never forgiven him for — and is the reason he tries not to even speak his former bandmate’s name today.

Good point, man.
Think about it -- an arena full of unfulfilled wishes.

Wanna-be groupie, inquisitive, MILFY western types.
Old family albums strewn with grainy, square, black and white snapshots of Annie Oakley outfits, with spurs and gems and leather fringe.

  {Joey?, by the way…}

Reminiscing longingly of tequila sunrises long along, in deserts, and with stars.  Wandering the smokey, incense-filled corridors of an adobe estate with a man wearing turquoise beads.

Wondering if ever really happened or was conjured up in some mid-70s fantasy mix of natural and synthetic substances.
Unfazed, or otherwise unaware, that at least one of their heroes a street-peddled porn aficionado.

That is like shooting fish in a barrel.

David Letterman Dares The Eagles to Sue Him for Playing Their Music

http://youtu.be/hvOmtEmIiUk

Throughout David Letterman‘s years as a late night talk show host, he’s had a great band to entertain the audience with a seemingly endless supply of cover songs. But there’s one major band that they have never played: the Eagles. On his show Friday (Sept. 12) night, Letterman found out why that’s the case.

As he says in this video above, Letterman had wanted to have the CBS Orchestra play some Eagles songs, but was told by a staff member that it would have cost too much to get the licensing rights. At first he said that he would pay whatever was necessary, but was quickly shot down by his producer, who said, “I don’t think they make exceptions. They have a flat ‘no’ policy for television.”

Naturally, this only made Letterman want to hear them even more, and tried to figure out if there was a loophole. Another member of his staff then pointed out that they could legally play less than three bars of an Eagles song. Then came the process of trying to figure out which hit to play with musical director Paul Shaffer. But the difficulty in trying to choose which ubiquitous Eagles song they were least sick of — from ‘Life in the Fast Lane’ to ‘Hotel California’ to ‘Take It Easy’ — caused Letterman to say, “You know what? I’m not that interested anymore.”

Don Henley Sues Maker of 'Henley' T-Shirt Over Pun

Once again, Don Henley is embroiled in a legal row over trademark infringement. The Eagles singer/drummer has filed suit in a California district court against the Duluth Trading Company over an ad that uses wordplay to seemingly invoke both his name and one of his band’s biggest hits.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the clothing company recently sent out an e-mail advertising its line of Henley shirts with copy that reads, “Don a Henley and Take It Easy.” Henley is claiming that the ad trades on the song’s name and his own, both of which are registered trademarks and were used without permission, and can be interpreted as an endorsement of the shirts. ‘Take It Easy’ was written by Glenn Frey and Jackson Browne.

“This kind of thing happens with some degree of frequency and the members of the Eagles always defend their rights, often at great expense,” Henley’s spokesperson said. “One would think that the people in charge of marketing for these corporations would have learned by now that U.S. law forbids trading on the name of a celebrity without permission from that celebrity.”

The suit, which contains a picture of the ad and can be found here, says that Henley is seeking “damages, including attorneys’ fees, he has sustain and will sustain, and any gains, profits, and advantages obtained by Duluth Trading Company as a result of its infringement as alleged above. At present, the amount of such damages, gains, profits and advantages cannot fully be ascertained by Mr. Henley.”

ABC News Radio says that Duluth Trading Company has issued a statement acknowledging the existence of the suit and that their “policy is to not comment on the specifics regarding matters of litigation.”

" To repeat myself, the Eagles always seemed the band directly opposite to the Rolling Stones.

What is the point of caring about rock music, if you are an Eagles fan ?  "

We don't necessarily hate them ... we simply just don't care enough about them to hate them (not about your poll or question but about the group itself).

The Eagles: Sort of "lame", too Americanized, and lacking any edge.

Sure they had talent, hung out for a while, were good songwriters and decent musicians and all ... but again: Sort of "lame", too Americanized, and lacking any edge.

" Every night I'm lying in bed
Holding you close in my dreams
Thinking about all the things that we said
Coming apart at the seams
We tried to talk it over
But the words come out too rough
I know you were trying
To give me the best of your love
Beautiful faces, loud empty places
Look at the way that we live
Wasting our time on cheap talk and wine
Left us so little to give
That same old crowd was like a cold dark cloud
That we could never rise above
But here in my heart
I give you the best of my love
(Chorus) Oh, sweet darlin'
You get the best of my love
Oh, sweet darlin'
You get the best of my love
I'm going back in time and it's a sweet dream
It was a quiet night, and I would be alright
If I could go on sleeping
But every morning, I wake up and worry
What's gonna happen today?
You see it your way, I see it mine
But we both see it slippin' away
You know we always had each other, baby
I guess that wasn't enough, oh
But here in my heart
I give you the best of my love

Randy Meisner Assures Fans His Wife Is Not Trying to Kill Him
by Jeff Giles April 30, 2015

RandyMeisnerOnline.com

Former Poco and Eagles bassist Randy Meisner has refuted bizarre allegations that his wife is trying to get him to drink himself to death.

TMZ published the initial report, which quotes an alleged friend of Meisner’s as saying his wife Lana keeps him in a “state of near-constant inebriation” because “he is easier to control when he’s drunk.” According to the friend, who says he’s attempting to have a legal conservatorship established in order to safeguard Meisner’s assets, Meisner has been diagnosed with brain damage and is often allowed to go unbathed for extended periods.

Unsurprisingly, the Meisners have taken issue with these accusations. They claim Randy no longer drinks and is doing fine, and they believe the conservatorship efforts are just a means to plunder his publishing royalties, which remain extensive decades after he walked away from the Eagles. TMZ caught up with the couple in person, and in a report published April 30, they offered an on-camera rebuttal.

“I can’t believe that they’re doing something like this, to tell you the truth,” retorted Meisner. “They want me to die so they can get the money, but it’s in [Lana's] name.”

Adding that he was definitely not drunk and had just enjoyed a bacon-and-eggs breakfast that he’d saved a portion of for his pet chihuahua, Meisner good-naturedly fielded a question about who landed the last punch in the infamous backstage fisticuffs between himself and Glenn Frey (he says it was a draw). As to whether they’ll pursue legal action retaliating against the would-be conservators, the Meisners say they remain undecided.

I'm proud to have hated the fucking Eagles since I was 14, and everyone was playing that Greatest Hits thing.  Didn't take me long to dismiss it, and I have nothing but scorn and derision for those who didn't.  The Eagles and their legions of fans make me ill.  Stones!

Don Henley Laments the Death of Common Courtesy
By Jeff Giles September 30, 2015

Erika Goldring, Getty Images

Don Henley wrote a substantial portion of his new Cass County album while driving the 154-mile distance between Dallas and Linden, Texas, and the experience left him feeling fairly grim about the state of American society.

Saying he was cut off by other drivers on a regular basis, Henley told Paste, “That encapsulates the whole fabric of our society now. Common courtesy is gone.”

The next logical step, continued Henley, is to remove turn signals from cars in order to really reflect how modern driving is a “bloodsport.” “If you want to change lanes or get off the freeway, you’d better start doing it a mile or two in advance, because nobody gives a s— what you want to do,” he warned. “That’s what happens when there’s too many f—ing people, like the psychologist who did the simple experiment of putting rats in a cage — the more you put in, the more aggressive their behavior becomes. It’s just a simple equation, but I don’t know what the answer is.”

He may not know what the answer is, but Henley — who’s devoted much of his time, money and energy to environmental causes over the last several decades — sees an inevitable endpoint looming, regardless of whether we treat other drivers fairly. “Nature’s going to take care of it,” he shrugged. “We’re going to run out of f—ing water, and that’s going to be it. That said? Life is still pretty good. And it’s better than the alternative, I guess.”

" The Eagles are going to have to wait another year to receive their Kennedy Center Honors.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced Wednesday it will postpone the presentation of Kennedy Center Honors to the Eagles due to band member Glenn Frey’s health concerns.

“The Eagles will be unable to participate in the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors on December 6th due to Glenn Frey’s health,” said the band in a statement. “Mr. Frey has had a recurrence of previous intestinal issues, which will require major surgery and a lengthy recovery period. The Kennedy Center has graciously agreed to postpone the Eagles’ award presentation until next year, when all four Eagles, Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit, can attend.”

While the band won't be participating, this year's gala will continue as scheduled on Dec. 6, where singer-songwriter Carole King, filmmaker George Lucas, actress and singer Rita Moreno, conductor Seiji Ozawa and actress and Broadway star Cicely Tyson will be honored.

Kennedy Center President Deborah Rutter sent her best wishes to Frey for a full recovery.  “It felt only right to defer bestowing this extraordinary honor to the group when Glenn could also be in attendance," says Rutter in a statement. "We look forward to the Eagles’ participation in the 2016 Honors.”

The Honors gala will air at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Dec. 29 on CBS.

" Don Henley: The Eagles won't play again  "

" Don Henley has described The Eagles' tribute to guitarist Glenn Frey as the band's "final farewell".

The remaining members of the group, accompanied by Jackson Browne, played a poignant version of Take It Easy at last month's Grammys ceremony, just a month after Frey died at the age of 67.

Speaking to BBC Radio 2's Simon Mayo, Henley described the performance as "very difficult and very emotional," revealing "we almost didn't do it".

The star added: "I think it was an appropriate farewell. I don't think you'll see us performing again."

So anyway, some of the guys in my current cover band have broken off from the rest of the group and have started an Eagles tribute band. As God as my witness, I have no #@#!ing idea what I should do. Should I talk to the rest of the guys in our band and get them kicked out? Should I take my Rickenbacker and go home? I am seriously losing sleep on this issue, as it will significantly hamper my social standing to be seen with them. Such talented musicians, too.

Has anyone else ever had this problem? What did you do?

The only thing I can think of is for me and moonie to head down to their opening gig this weekend with "Eagles suck!" painted on our buttocks so we can drop trau when they start playing "Hotel California". Anyone else care to join us?

" Don Felder, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner Will NOT Be Part of the Eagles' Kennedy Center Honors  "

" Despite a year long campaign by a fan, the Kennedy Center has decided not to include Don Felder, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner as part of the Eagles' Kennedy Center Honors.

The Eagles were supposed to receive the honor last December but they asked to have it postponed a year while Glenn Frey was going through a medical situation. Shortly after the initial announcement in 2015, fan Brandon Butler started a petition asking the Kennedy Center to included all of the past members of the band who contributed so much to their sound and career to be included in the ceremony.

In August, Butler sent the petition to the Kennedy Center but, unfortunately, he received the following statement back from Deborah Rutter, president of the Center:
The Kennedy Center consulted with the Eagles and through that discussion, it was determined that the four band members who "carried the torch" --Don Henley, the late Glenn Frey, Timothy B. Schmit, and Joe Walsh--will be awarded the Honors. We appreciate that there will be some debate about who constitutes the Eagles. This determination does not discredit the contributions of former band members.
Still, Butler is not giving up completely. He has asked Ms. Rutter to at least consider inviting Felder, Leadon and Meisner so that they can "feel a sense of pride and accomplishment watching the tributes from their fellow artists."

Butler added:
I want to send one final message to Don, Bernie, and Randy if they or anyone within their families read this. Please know that 10,000 plus Eagles fans across the globe believe your contributions to the band will not be forgotten. Regardless of the outcome of this petition, you should feel a sense of accomplishment and pride knowing your contributions are going to be heard by generations to come like "Hotel California", or "Take It To the Limit", or "Witchy Woman". They will be played for years to come. I think that is a lot better than having a medal placed across your chest  "

" The Eagles were originally selected to be honored last year, but the band opted to delay participation because of founding member Glenn Frey's poor health. Frey died in January at age 67, making the event a bittersweet one for the surviving Eagles, who were joined by Frey's widow, Cindy Frey. Henley has said the band will never perform again. Bob Seger, Vince Gill and Kings of Leon performed the Eagles' music on Sunday.

"I want to dedicate this evening to our brother Glenn," Henley said as the band accepted its honors Saturday night at the State Department. "He was so much a part of our success. He was the driving force in this band. He believed in the American dream."

The band's longtime manager, Irving Azoff, sobbed as he raised a glass to Frey.

"For our Eagles family," he said, "2016 couldn't have had a harder beginning or a more appropriate ending."

" The Eagles Turn Classic West Into A Powerful Memorial For Glenn Frey   "

" When the Classic West and East, two two-day concerts in Los Angeles and New York headlined by the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, were announced earlier this year, comparisons to last year’s wildly successful Desert Trip were immediate and inevitable. Like that once in a lifetime bill bringing together six iconic acts of one era, Classic West and East featured six bands from one era, in this case the ‘70s, joining together for a special bill.

That is really where the comparisons end though. Unlike Desert Trip, which was much more about the event, night one of Classic West, held at Dodger Stadium last night (July 15), was all about the headliner, the Eagles, in their first full-scale performance since the death of Glenn Frey in January of 2016.

Don Henley had said in March of 2016 the band would never perform again without Frey, calling their Grammy Awards tribute to their fallen band mate “A fitting farewell.” Indeed, it might have been a fitting farewell for the band.

But one thing that was missing for a performer so much a part of popular culture for the last four decades was a proper memorial for the fans. Frey and the Eagles were not just one of the most commercially successful rock acts of all time with over 150 million albums sold, they were the soundtrack of millions of lives, especially in Southern California, where they are a massive part of the community and culture.

Last night, though, at Dodger Stadium, Frey was given the moving and compelling sendoff the fans who loved his music clearly wanted. The band, joined by Frey’s son, Deacon, and country star Vince Gill, both of whom fit in superbly, took the stage at around 8:45, opening with a harmonious “Seven Bridges Road.”

Immediately after, Henley spoke of his late band mate. “This one’s for you, Glenn. You’re in our hearts tonight and the music goes on,” he said, introducing Frey’s signature song, “Take It Easy.”

The Eagles, famously over the years, have been criticized for how perfectly their live sound replicates the albums. Henley once joked with me about the lambasting, commenting, “It’s not easy to do.” This is a band that strives for virtual audio perfection on stage. So there was little doubt that musically, with Frey’s son Deacon and Gill, the band would strike the right chords. And, as expected, musically it was almost perfect throughout the night.

There were countless highlights, led by a rare version of the epic “The Last Resort,” the sweeping closing track of Hotel California. But that was just one standout moment. Joe Walsh’s guitar work on “Life’s Been Good” and “Rocky Mountain Way” ignited the crowd. Timothy B. Schmidt leading the soulful “I Can’t Tell You Why” was a beautiful moment. Whether it was “Best Of My Love,” “Life In The Fast Lane,” “Tequila Sunrise,” “New Kid In Town,” or “In The City,” practically every song was a hit.

While Henley rightly said the fans were there for the songs, it was the between songs moments that made this night so poignant. It was impossible not to be swept up in emotion when Deacon Frey, clad in a Dodgers jersey, introduced “Peaceful Easy Feeling.” “This is unbelievable,” he said, remarkably composed for a 23-year-old playing his father’s songs in front of 50,000 plus fans. “The last few years have been rough. The only remedy for that is love and I’m feeling it from you tonight. This is my medicine.”

Then during the song, which he delivered with precision, he said, “Anyone out there miss my dad?” The huge cheer that greeted a large photo of his father on the video screen behind him answered the question with a resounding and heartfelt yes.

The elder Frey was also honored when surprise guest Bob Seger, who recorded “Rambling Gambling Man” with Frey in 1968, came out to a massive ovation and took lead vocals on “Heartache Tonight.” The introduction of Seger, who Henley called, “One of the most beloved figures in rock,” of course injected the crowd with a burst of adrenaline.

As much as the show felt like a celebration of Frey at times, it was still a concert, and the Eagles did a superb job of balancing the two, making the emotion part of the show instead of letting it override the night.

That was never more evident than in the closing moment, “Desperado.” Following a rousing encore of “Hotel California,” which of course had the whole stadium singing and featured more stellar guitar by Walsh, and “Rocky Mountain Way,” the opening notes of “Desperado” played.

One of the most beautiful and touching songs ever written in rock, it took on so much added depth tonight. Early in the night, Henley addressed the fact this might be the band’s last hometown show. “In case this is our last dance, we want to thank all the fans in Southern California,” he said. “It all started here in Los Angeles.” And if tonight was indeed the finale in Los Angeles, which I doubt even the band knows at this point, so caught up in emotion, then there was no more perfect way for one of Los Angeles’ greatest bands ever to go out than singing in front of a hometown crowd, “You better let somebody love you before it’s too late.”

With that line, they took a final curtain call and walked off the stage, having said, perhaps, the goodbye that the band and fans had earned after more than four incredible decades together. "

Don Felder should have been there.

Great Reviews !!!!   :

http://variety.com/2017/music/news/concert-review-classic-west-dodger-stadium-eagles-steely-dan-doobie-brothers-1202497063/

" Concert Review: Classic West Hits a Home Run at Dodger Stadium Debut, but Is It the Eagles’ Last L.A. Waltz?  "

" Were fans at the inaugural Classic West festival at Dodger Stadium seeing the Eagles’ local last hurrah Saturday night? Don Henley, who’d be first to admit he’s made false prophecies about afterlives and temperatures before, wasn’t predicting one way or another, but he did strongly hint that there might not be a future for the band after they play the counterpart Classic East fest in New York later this month. “In case this is our last dance, I want to thank all our fans in southern California,” Henley told the full house. “It all started right here in Los Angeles 46 years ago… Who knew?”

But if this was a test run for whether a post-Glenn Frey version of the Eagles could pass muster, it augured well on that front, thanks to some smart choices about fill-ins for the late co-frontman. The most obvious live ringer was Frey’s 24-year-old son, Deacon, who was wearing a Dodgers jersey laden with meaning beyond just a mere nod to the concert’s Chavez Ravine setting. It was a Kenley Jansen jersey, honoring the Dodger who is arguably the top bullpen pitcher in baseball right now — a choice that hardly seemed coincidental, since Deacon was acting as a reliever of sorts for his dad in for the Eagles’ first full concert since Glenn’s 2016 passing, along with fellow closers Vince Gill and (for just one song) Bob Seger.

It was the night of a thousand fill-ins, seemingly, as not only the Eagles but middle-billed Steely Dan were faced with doing a show without half of the original dynamic duo. Early on in Steely Dan’s set, attendees might have been wondering if co-leader Walter Becker had shaved his head since last year’s Hollywood Bowl show, only to finally have Donald Fagen explain that Becker “took ill [just] before he was supposed to come to L.A.” and offer a “wish for a speedy recovery.” In Becker’s place was legendary guitarist Larry Carlton, who’d played the solos on some seminal Steely Dan recordings like “Kid Charlemagne.”

Here, as with the Eagles’ set, there was the bittersweet sense of an unfortunate absence resulting in a possibly one-of-a-kind show rife with different chemistry and creativity. Sometimes, mortality truly is the mother of invention.

In some key ways, Saturday night’s set was much like a typical Eagles show from before Frey’s passing, with pretty much the same chestnuts performed (minus a few very early album cuts that’d been added to the “History of the Eagles” tour). Every Eagles concert may end with “Desperado,” but the half-hour before that will always see the group turning into the Joe Walsh Band, with even Henley well realizing that non-Eagles picks like “Rocky Mountain Way,” “Funk #49,” and “Life’s Been Good” and Walsh’s solos on “Life in the Fast Lane” and “Hotel California” outdo weightier fare like “The Best of My Love” as the kind of fireworks that send the fans in the top deck home happy.

But for aficionados of deep tracks, there was a unique addition to the Dodger Stadium show, one that Henley maybe felt he couldn’t forego if this really could be the Eagles’ last waltz in L.A. That was the “Hotel California” album closer “The Last Resort,” one of the finest pieces of writing from one of rock’s best lyricists, although, as Henley noted, “We never did it much back in the day.” (Indeed, setlists.fm has this show down as possibly only the seventh time the Eagles ever played it in a regular concert setting, not counting the “Hell Freezes Over” sessions.) “It requires some personnel. But we brought some personnel,” Henley further explained, a nod to a five-piece string section enlisted specifically for “Resort” on top of the horns that adorned a few other numbers. A meditation on land grabs, religion, and the California dream, “The Last Resort” is even more elegiac now than it was in 1976, whether it now put you in mind of global warming or the recent passing of a certain California dreamer.

It was to Deacon Frey, however, to get elegiac on a more profoundly prosaic level: “Anyone out there miss my dad?” he asked. His father was, of course, the real star of this particular show, as evidenced by the remaining band’s choice to employ three substitutes in his stead.

Seger was the surprise of the evening, brought out for “Heartache Tonight,” the barn-burner on which he is co-credited as a writer. (Henley mentioned that one of Frey’s first recording credits was as backup singer on Seger’s 1968 “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man,” too.) Deacon was the sentimental favorite, looking and sounding spookily like the family patriarch in his most heartthrobbish post-Troubadour days — and also put on some of the rowdier, earlier songs his father sang, like “Take It Easy” and “Already Gone,” since the ballads benefit from a more experienced hand.

That hand came in the form of country great Gill, who provided as assured a recreation of Frey’s slick soulfulness on “Tequila Sunrise,” “Lyin’ Eyes” and “New Kid in Town” as anyone could (along with assuming Randy Meisner’s high, lonesome sound on “Take It to the Limit”). Henley introduced Gill as “one of the finest singers, the finest songwriters, and the finest guitarists America has ever produced.” It would have been nice to hear more of that guitar playing, but Gill is a naturally humble personality in the presence of other legends, and it’s probably tough to reassign solos in a band that already has Walsh and Steuart Smith in it. But if you’re a fan of both the Eagles and Gill, it’s hard not to fantasize about a future for the group that has Gill involved as a full partner not just in eulogizing Frey but for future collaborative recordings… unlikely as that surely is at this late stage.

Steely Dan’s 75-minute middle set was surely the most purely musical thing that has ever transpired in Dodger Stadium… or at least since Nancy Bea retired, anyway. Just like the Dodgers have the best players money can buy, so do Steely Dan, even if trombone monster Jim Pugh probably isn’t getting paid quite as much as Kershaw. The horn soloists were all responsible in turn for multiple moments of jazz nirvana. And while it might seem disrespectful to say that Becker’s illness created a welcome opening, having Carlton on stage as the sole guitarist for a full set (Fagen also gave Becker’s usual guitar counterpart, Jon Herrington, the night off) made for a highly bootleggable show. Carlton was reading from charts as he recreated the work of some of the other greatest guitarists of the 20th century, but also stepped out and let loose with his own improvisations at appropriate moments — like on “Time Out of Mind” (maybe recognizing that Mark Knopfler’s playing was so buried on the studio mix of that song, no one would remember how it goes anyway).

Steely Dan remain the least rock ‘n’ roll great rock ‘n’ roll band of all time… which is to say, they can be a hard sell to millennials with yacht-rock preconceptions. When Fagen and Becker played Coachella, they were accused, fairly or unfairly, of acting like they didn’t necessarily want to be there. That clearly wasn’t the case with Fagen’s exuberant presence here, where he knew he was playing to his demo and didn’t have to take “Hey Nineteen” quite so literally. He even exited the stage with an exaggerated spring in his step, possibly marking the first time Steely Dan members have ever been associated with actual skipping.

The Doobie Brothers also brought a high level of musicianship, if not contemporary relevance, to their opening set. (For a while, it seemed as if their 1989 track “The Doctor” might be the newest song performed on stage all day, until the Eagles finally bettered it by playing an even fresher track, 1994’s “Love Will Keep Us Alive.”) Tom Johnston doesn’t just have rock’s greatest unironic porn-star ‘stache, but some enduringly slamming chops to help make the nostalgia go down. Also standing out instrumentally was Little Feat’s Billy Payne, who got repeated shout-outs from other Doobies, presumably not just because of his excellence, but as a warning to fans in the top deck that just because they see gray hair behind a keyboard, not to expect Michael McDonald’s voice coming out when they got to “Takin’ It to the Streets.”

“You gotta celebrate, man!” exclaimed Johnston. “This is the Classic! This is the first one of these!” With that, he firmly established whether the nascent festival should be known as “Classic West” or “the Classic West,” counterintuitive as the real answer may seem. (Whether it should rightfully be “the Eagles” or just “Eagles,” we can still eternally debate.)

But satisfying as the first of the fest’s two days may have been, it’s difficult not to mourn the lost opportunity of Steely Dan failing to perform “Everything You Did,” with its sarcastic “Turn up the Eagles” line…. or the Eagles neglecting to bring out anyone from Steely Dan to mime stabbing motions during the reciprocal lyrical homage in “Hotel California.” Maybe at the Classic East?

" Eagles Are Their Own Special Guests at Day One of Classic East Festival  "

" Timothy B. Schmit, Vince Gill, Don Henley, Deacon Frey and Joe Walsh perform onstage with The Eagles during The Classic East - Day 1 at Citi Field on July 29, 2017 in New York City.
"I may be older, but at least I got to see all the cool bands." So read a T-shirt worn by multiple attendees of Saturday night's (July 29) Classic East festival at Citi Field in Queens, New York, encapsulating the generational pride the fest is meant to exemplify with its lineup of '70s legacy acts.

The half-dozen Classic bands first appeared over two nights at the concert's West Coast incarnation two weeks earlier, and the East swing kicked off on Saturday with The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan and the Eagles -- the latter making their second appearance with next-gen Eaglet Deacon Frey, replacing his father, the late co-founder Glenn Frey.

Of course, if "cool" was really the objective, it's debatable whether these are the bands to make the case. The three groups were arguably cool in the '70s, definitely not cool in the late '80s or '90s, and at least potentially cool again in the 21st century, as their songs have outlasted any other meaningful cultural associations the bands once had. Nonetheless, those squaring to be hip would certainly have been better served last night about seven miles west at the Panorama Festival on Randall's Island, where Tame Impala headlined a day's worth of cutting-edge underground rock favorites.

Panorama may have had the cred, but Classic East definitely had the hits: Over 40 combined top 40 Hot 100 hits for the three acts on Saturday night, far more than the 73 acts over three nights at Panorama put together. The Doobie Brothers kicked off the night with one of 'em, "Jesus Is Just Alright," revving up what turned out to be an impressively blistering set from the California rockers. The band was locked in and absolutely pumped to be there, and frontman Tom Johnston remains the picture of '70s prosperity: fat moustache, luxurious black hair, and muscular, finger-pointing swagger.

Sadly, as at Classic West, longtime DoobBro Michael McDonald (who replaced Johnston in the band largely for health reasons in the mid-'70s) was nowhere to be found. That meant no "It Keeps You Running," "Minute By Minute," or of course, "What a Fool Believes" -- arguably the band's biggest hit, though one strictly untouchable without McDonald's singular blubbering. (The Doobies did perform his "Taking It to the Streets," however, with founding guitarist Patrick Simmons and newer bassist John Cowan combining for a respectable vocal facsimile.)

It would've been great to see McDonald, who left the group decades ago but still pops up with them occasionally -- could've stuck around to reprise his backing vocals on Steely Dan's "Peg," too! -- but the set may have been more coherent for his absence, since the synth-soul jams of his Doobies era would've fit oddly around the group's tighter, bluesier early material. And when a band can close out a pre-encore with a troika of stone FM classics like "Black Water," "Long Train Coming" and "China Grove," it's hard to really grouse at them for the songs they left on the table.

Pivotal members missing would be a recurring theme throughout the evening, however: One song into their expert 13-song set, Steely Dan frontman Donald Fagen addressed the absence of the band's guitarist and co-founder, Walter Becker, who also missed Classic West, both with illness. Fagen said Becker's recovering and you certainly hope he is; in the meantime, his contributions were ably covered -- in large part by the band's old instrumentalist friend Larry Carlton -- and Fagen remained in high spirits, swaying goofily at the piano and grinning widely from behind his comically loose tie.

Steely Dan's set was marvelous -- energetic, proficient and predictably virtuosic, with solos zooming from every direction, courtesy of trombones, melodicas, drums and most instruments in between. The band played at least one song from each of their seven original studio albums (no luck, Two Against Nature Grammy voters) but leaned most heavily on the last three; the two hits from 1980's original farewell Gaucho ("Hey Nineteen" and "Time Out of Mind") sounded especially limber. The band skipped breakthrough smash "Do It Again" but played their debut's David Palmer-sung classic-rock staple "Dirty Work," giving backing vocalists "The Danettes" an opportunity to prove the song could've been a dynamite Rufus and Chaka Khan ballad in another life. And Fagen had the best stage banter of the night, at one point asking the crowd to "Give one of those 'millennial whoops'." (Hey, he must be a Billlboard.co reader!)

The Dan's portion of the gig ended 20 minutes ahead of schedule -- which, combined with Bob Seger's surprise appearance during the Eagles' set at Classic West, had the crowd buzzing about who the band's special guest could possibly be this time. (John Mellencamp? John Fogerty? Post-Panorama Frank Ocean doing "American Wedding"??) The answer: Nobody! The Eagles' nearly two-and-a-half-hour set came and went without a single unexpected visitor. Sorry, NY fans -- hopefully it means twice the surprise guests during Fleetwood Mac on Sunday?

Regardless, the Eagles brought more than enough of their own firepower to make up for their lack of supplementary celebs. Of course, the band already has two solo stars in Don Henley and Joe Walsh (apologies, Timothy B. Schmit), and they've added a third in country legend Vince Gill -- who also helped fill in for Glenn Frey at Classic West, and who the band introduced on Saturday as "one of the best singer-songwriters and guitarists this country has ever produced." Gill acquitted himself admirably on Frey country-rock standards "Lyin' Eyes" and "Tequila Sunrise," and even played the Randy Meisner part on proto-power ballad "Take It to the Limit" -- though he couldn't quite commit to the song's trademark falsetto squeals on the outro.

But again, all eyes were most squarely on young Deacon, a positively eerie dead-ringer for his younger pops (with perhaps a touch of Eli Manning thrown in), who seemed humbled, but not overwhelmed by the opportunity to step into dad's shoes in front of many thousands of long-time fans. He handled it like a pro, and he sounded awesome -- not that replacing Glenn Frey's plaintive twang is as high a degree-of-difficulty ask as mimicking Michael McDonald, but it was still stunning how quickly his crooning became inconspicuous. "It's all a little tender," Deacon admitted of being back in New York, where his father passed back in January 2016. "But with all you guys, and these guys behind me supporting me, it should be pretty good."

It wasn't only the roster that packed no surprises at the show last night -- the set list was also identical to the Eagles' rundown from Classic West, with the sole addition of Don Henley's 1990 minor solo hit "New York Minute," presumably for geographic reasons. Still, the songs chosen left little to argue with, providing a couple well-selected deep cuts (sweeping Hotel California closer "The Last Resort" and funky Long Run talkbox exercise  "Those Shoes") and otherwise just hammering the hits.

As the band serpentined through their classics, you really got a sense of just how many things they did well: They might be most frequently recalled as paragons of laid-back California country rock, but they were similarly adept at widescreen arena rock, smooth pop-soul and even blue-eyed disco, their combination of gorgeous harmonies, scorching guitar leads and a swinging rhythm section making them one of the most crossover-capable bands of the '70s. Not many groups could go from "Take It Easy" to "One of These Nights" in three years' time; that the Eagles played the songs back-to-back on Saturday without it even seeming weird was just a testament to how much we take their versatility for granted.

If one were to find fault with the Eagles' set list, it would be that it took too extended a dip into Joe Walsh's solo and James Gang material -- four of the band's final eight songs, including "Rocky Mountain Way" to kick off the second encore. Great songs, all, and it was especially righteous hearing "In the City" in The Warriors' hometown, but it felt like a lot of Iso Joe, especially without much solo Henley (or solo Frey, natch, though it would've been a treat to hear the kid take on "You Belong to the City") to balance. Nonetheless, the night ended the right way: With Henley leading an elegiac "Desperado," the first song he and Frey ever wrote together. Don's voice sounds a little pinched after 45 years, but that only adds hard-earned pathos to the song's "You ain't getting any younger" message. Elaine Benes' boyfriend woulda loved it.

Unlike at West, when Henley & Co. seemed to hint that the two Classic concerts could represent the band's last ride, there were fewer moments of finality at East -- mostly just gratitude. And with Deacon and possibly Gill in tow, there's no real reason the group shouldn't be able to continue on: The band sounds about as on-point as ever, and festivals like Desert Trip and Classic East/West are proving there's still a market for headliners of the Eagles' age and stature. The kids at least deserve a chance to try to catch up to the older folks, right?  "

" Eagles Books Fall Run "

“The Classic Northwest” isn’t the only place to catch the Eagles on stage this fall. The band announced a handful of performances today, with tickets going on sale this week.

“The Eagles concert at Citi Field Saturday was so poignant and well-executed there was no way to tell whether it was the legendary band’s final East Coast appearance or the start of its next chapter,” Newsday’s Glenn Gamboa wrote in his review of the “Classic East” event in late July.

The concert at New York’s Citi Field was the East Coast edition of the summer extravaganza featuring Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, Journey and more. In addition to the fantastic lineup, the concerts were significant for being the first shows for the Eagles since founding member Glenn Frey died in January 2016.

Like Classic East and West, the lineup for the new fall headline dates will feature Vince Gill and Deacon Frey – the son of Glenn Frey – joining Eagles’ Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit.

The first concert takes place at the Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina Oct. 17.

The other stops are booked at Philips Arena in Atlanta Oct. 20; KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky., Oct. 24; and Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Mich., Oct. 27.

An American Express card member presale starts Oct. 15 at 10 a.m.

A limited number of VIP ticket packages will be available, including premium seats and access to a preshow VIP lounge.

Tickets go on sale to the general public Aug. 19 at 10 a.m. All times local.   "

FFS....current Petty tribute opened for a Bon Jovi tribute tonight. The bass player drank some IPAs and met a chick in the crowd, so now the band bus is stuck waiting for him to get his miserable ass back here so we can get f*ckin' home and go to bed. Thankfully, Bon Jovi tributes are not as bad as the real thing, but that isn't saying much.

This brings up a good question that might need another thread, or at least another poll:

Which is worse: Bon Jovi, the Eagles or lemon juice poured into 57 cuts on your leg from a rusty razor blade?

" The Eagles are coming to town, with Glenn Frey’s son Deacon taking his place    "

By Nicole Brodeur

“Oh … OK,” Don Henley said, and then seemed to need a moment to gather his thoughts.

I had started our talk wanting to get the hard stuff out of the way: the loss of his friend and co-founder of The Eagles, Glenn Frey, who passed away in January of last year of pneumonia.

Henley and the band are preparing to tour without him for the first time since his death and will play Safeco Field on Sept. 30, with The Doobie Brothers co-headlining. They’re billing it as “The Classic Northwest.”

“It’s very strange to be on the road without him,” Henley began. “It’s just odd. I don’t know if I will ever get completely accustomed to it.”

But Henley has done the only thing he could do to keep Frey’s spirit alive, and to keep playing: He has asked Frey’s son Deacon to join The Eagles, playing and singing his father’s parts.

“It’s uncanny,” said Henley, the band’s drummer and an accomplished solo artist. “I feel Glenn’s spirit is very near. I look out from the drums to where Deacon is standing and his hair is exactly the same as his father’s was in 1976. He’s taller, but looking at him from the back there, it’s freaky.”

Deacon Frey is just 24, and had only played in front of about 150 people before walking out on stadium stages in front of 55,000.

“It’s extraordinary the way he was able to compose himself,” Henley said. “He decided that rather than living in his father’s shadow, he would pick up the torch and carry it forward.

“We are extremely proud of him, and we know his father would be.”

Things were fine between the two friends before Frey’s death, Henley said. They had just finished the “History of the Eagles” tour and each gone back home to their families.

Frey was working on plans to produce a musical-theater piece based on The Eagles’ catalog — the pivotal piece being the 1976’s 32 million seller, “Hotel California.” Frey, a native of Detroit, had visited the University of Michigan to try out some of the songs with a choral group.

“Just how the songs worked in a different context,” Henley said. “(Frey) was very keen to do that research and find out about the process. And then he got pneumonia.”

Frey was “tired and run down,” was all Henley wanted to say of his friend’s death.

On this day, Henley was home in Dallas, waiting on friends — “refugees” from Hurricane Irma in Florida. One daughter was walking around the house with pneumonia. Another had gotten in a car accident the night before. And did he mention he had just had his first grandchild? A boy.

So it will be a little hard for him to leave them all and tour.

He’s been working out with two trainers and a physical therapist three or four times a week, trying to get physically and mentally prepared.

“I just want to be the best I can be when I’m up there,” he said. “I don’t think people understand what it takes when you’re 70.”

Oh. I think they do. The bulk of Eagles fans are around Henley’s age, and then get younger from there, spanning decades and generations. The band started in 1971, broke up 10 years later and went back out on the road in 1994.

“We have lost some people who were on the front end of it,” he said of their longevity. “But there are still thousands and thousands of people out there who love these songs, which are the soundtrack of their lives.”

Still, he senses something more than singing coming back at him from the audience: Relief.

“These are such strange times we’re living in politically and culturally,” Henley said. “And I think people want something that’s familiar and reassuring up there. There are still, in a world that is seemingly reeling out of control, some things that are relatively constant.”

He still can’t believe The Eagles have lasted this long, and become one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time, having sold more than 150 million records — 100 million in the U.S. alone.

Back in the day, Henley used to joke that The Eagles could fall apart at any time.

“Glenn and I both thought every day when we got up, having our coffee, ‘This will probably be the last day of this,’ because fame is fleeting for most people,” he said. “That’s why we wrote ‘New Kid in Town.’ You’re always going to be replaced.

“But we had an extraordinary run and I am still trying to get perspective on it,” he continued. “When I do pause to look back, it’s very dreamlike, and we’re grateful. People talk about getting in touch with your gratitude, and that’s been a present process for me in this last year and a half: to look back at all the unlikely intersections where paths crossed and things happened because of that, and there’s no figuring it out.

“I have tried to figure out why. Why us, and why not some other people?”

There’s no answer, and no need to do anything but get out there and play.

It helps that he will be out there with longtime members Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, country star Vince Gill and Deacon Frey.

“I don’t think I would have done it if he had not come on board,” he said of the younger Frey, who calls him “Uncle Don.”

Henley recalled seeing Deacon Frey sing “Peaceful, Easy Feeling” at his father’s memorial. (“He was so composed and so strong.”)

It didn’t occur to him to put the band back together until a few months later, when longtime manager Irving Azoff — who also manages The Doobies — suggested a joint tour.

“I said, ‘The only way I am willing to do this if is Deacon Frey will join the band,’ ” he said.

Henley spoke with Frey’s widow, Cindy, and then asked Deacon, who was surprised, but enthusiastic.

“I don’t think he was expecting it, but once it sank in, he was in,” Henley said, then got quiet again.

“It’s a strange mixture of grief and celebration,” he said. “We will never get over the loss of Glenn. But over time, you learn how to live with it.”

https://www.indystar.com/story/entertainment/music/2018/03/13/opening-night-provides-5-reasons-eagles-tour-can-dominate-year-concerts/413318002/

" Five reasons the Eagles may have already played the year’s best concert   "

" Joe Walsh and Vince Gill elevate band at Bankers Life Fieldhouse  "

" The Eagles, a band reimagined and rejuvenated in its 47th year, may turn out to be the biggest concert story of 2018.

With greetings of "Good morning" from Joe Walsh and "Howdy, Hoosiers" from Don Henley, the Eagles' 53-date tour kicked off Monday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The two-hour, 40-minute show presented countless musical reminders of Glenn Frey, the co-founding Eagle who died in January 2016.

But it wouldn't be accurate to describe the performance as a memorial for Frey, which seemed to be the spirit of eight concerts the band played last year.

On Monday, Henley mentioned his former partner when introducing "Best of My Love" — the Eagles' first No. 1 hit back in 1974.

And that was it, aside from Deacon Frey, Glenn's son, giving a heartfelt introduction to "Peaceful Easy Feeling": "Here's one my dad used to sing."

The big headlines on opening night belonged to Joe Walsh, an archetypal rock 'n' roll survivor who's rested and ready, and hired-gun vocalist-guitarist Vince Gill.

This duo will put a charge in stadium crowds when the Eagles share bills with Jimmy Buffett, Chris Stapleton and James Taylor this summer.

Walsh summed it up nicely when revising a line from his 1978 classic "Life's Been Good": "I'm making records, my fans they can't wait. They write me emails, tell me Vince is great."

Check out five reasons the year in concerts can belong to the Eagles:

1. The legacy
Deacon Frey is a singer-guitarist in his mid-20s who had limited experience playing in public before last summer. It's not reasonable to expect him to be an equal of Henley, Walsh and Gill, but this tour will give him ample chance to grow as a performer. For now, his defining trait is closed eyes when singing "Take It Easy," "How Long," "Peaceful Easy Feeling" and "Already Gone." Monday's audience heard a snippet of Deacon replicating his father's natural vocal phrasing during "How Long," a J.D. Souther tune the Eagles played in the early and late stages of the Glenn Frey era. To Deacon's credit, he realizes he's among friends. "Keep that energy coming," he told the packed house. "It's helping me out."

2. Super-sized show
Indianapolis was treated to 28 songs from the Eagles, an expanded program when compared to the standard 23 tunes performed in 2017. Rarities included Gill's rendition of "Ol' '55," a Tom Waits song adopted by the Eagles (the B-side to the "Best of My Love" single, for trivia buffs). According to online concert database Setlist.fm, the band last played "Ol' '55" in 1999. Setlist.fm also reports 16 years passed between the last live version of "Victim of Love" and Monday's. A five-member horn section added cinematic accents to "Witchy Woman," and the horn arrangement on "Funk #49" was as intricate and advanced as anything you'll catch at a rock show.

3. Vince Gill
This 21-time Grammy Award winner and Country Music Hall of Famer mentioned his "hillbilly" roots during Monday's show. It's difficult to imagine a better fit for the band that made country-rock a mainstream sensation in the '70s. Gill covered Timothy B. Schmit's "I Can't Tell You Why" for Nashville compilation "Common Thread" in 1993. Schmit handled that tune himself Monday, but Gill supplied a goosebumps moment when singing the high notes of "Take It to the Limit" — a 1975 Eagles smash originally sung by former bass player Randy Meisner. Another Gill highlight arrived when he sang "Lyin' Eyes," one of the best theater-of-the-mind songs from the pre-MTV days.

4. Guitar brigade
With Walsh, Gill and Steuart Smith (who succeeded Don Felder in the band's live lineup in 2001) onstage, you're guaranteed a parade of beautiful guitars played by masters. Walsh combines brute force and a can't-miss element of joy in his technique. Smith, meanwhile, is a chameleon who's skilled at seemingly all styles and tones. On "Those Shoes," Walsh and Smith executed a rarely seen "talk box" duel in which the guitarists modified their sound using their mouths and plastic tubes. Gill traded acoustic licks with Smith on show-opener "Seven Bridges Road," and he picked staccato Telecaster notes in tandem with Walsh on "Take It Easy."

5. The vets
Henley, Walsh and Schmit are each 70 years old (but that doesn't mean Walsh is too old to wear black leather pants onstage). For uninhibited performances of "Rocky Mountain Way," "Walk Away" and "In the City," Walsh is worthy of "national treasure" status. It wouldn't be an Eagles show without Schmit singing "I Can't Tell You Why," and he dotes on fans more than any other member of the band. Henley stumbled out of the gate with a shaky rendition of "One of These Nights," and he took a breather or two when Walsh had the spotlight. But he flexed his underappreciated soul-man vocals on "Witchy Woman." And Henley appropriately had the last word of the evening when singing get-your-life-right anthem "Desperado."

The songs
The Eagles showcased material ranging from their debut 1972 album (“Take It Easy,” “Witchy Woman” and “Peaceful Easy Feeling”) to the band’s last studio recording, 2007’s “Long Road Out of Eden” (“How Long” and “I Don’t Want to Hear Any More”).

" EAGLES ROCK CAMPING WORLD STADIUM  "

Eagles / Jimmy Buffett Show Review

" I have a policy these days that if a band does not approve me for press credentials, I don’t cover them on the blog. But, it’s my blog and I’m allowed to break the rules. And, last night was a show that just begged for an exception .

I was a casual fan, and had never seen the Eagles.  With all of the recent deaths in the rock universe, I figure it was time to check out their live show.

Before the show one of our friends asked if I was going to review the show, and I answered “Probably not, unless something special happens.” I did absolutely no prep work, and took no notes, nor photos, but something special did indeed happen.

But, let me start with something that was not special. Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band. Buffett and crew sounded mediocre, generally looked ill-prepared and were kind of going through the motions. They were having fun, but their set list was generally the same as always, and their sound and show just doesn’t translate well for rock fans. Buffett is perfectly fine for an arena or amphitheater show where everyone is drunk and just looking for a reason to stumble around the arena – and as someone who has done that once or twice, there is nothing wrong with that – but it did not work at Camping World Stadium.

Things got much better when the Eagles slipped onto the dark stage and started the first sweet notes of “Seven Bridges Road.” At first I thought it was a little odd starting with a cover, but it worked out perfectly and set the stage for a fantastic night of music. The song is built around five-part harmonies and the band pulled it off masterfully. The pristine harmonies were a constant theme all night.

Immediately after it finished, Don Henley introduced the young guy on the stage: “Glenn’s son Deacon,” and they kicked into “Take It Easy,” and the kid sounded pretty damn good. Deacon Frey took lead vocal responsibilities on a few other songs, and after quickly addressing the crowd with a heartfelt thank you, he offered, “This is one of my dad’s songs,” and kicked into “Already Gone.”

The other new kid in town was Vince Gill who delivered near perfect renditions of “Take It to the Limit” and “Tequila Sunrise” early in the set. He later mentioned that he was a 61 year-old kid living a dream just before playing “New Kid In Town.” Some drunk woman kept screaming “he has the voice of an angel.” She was loud, but it was hard to argue with her… Gill also helped expand the set list diversity a bit by throwing in one of his country songs, “Next Big Thing.”

Henley mentioned early in the evening that they would be playing for two and a half hours “because we can.” And along with Joe Walsh and Timothy B Schmit, the trio of 70 year-old rockers delivered all night long. Schmit had his foot in a cast propped up in front of him the entire show, but was solid all night, and delivered a few priceless lead vocals.

Henley spent the night rotating through his drum kit, a percussion riser and an acoustic guitar and shined frequently. He was affable and likable, and his vocals are still quite good. He also shared a few poignant Glenn Frey stories, including one about his old ’55 Chevy, before the band offered up a cover of Tom Waits’ “Ol’ 55.”

For the first 90 minutes of the show, the perfectly constructed set list (see below) was generally more mellow, acoustic stuff that had the crowd singing along frequently. Up to that point, Joe Walsh was kind of a bit player, but damn did that change over the last hour, and the energy and volume kicked up a few notches, as well.

Over the last ten or so songs, Walsh spent the majority of the time in the spotlight. Speaking to the crowd, his words are damn near incomprehensible, but it was obvious he was in rare form. His vocals are not what they once were, but at 70, he sounded great. And, the dude can still play guitar. With 40 minutes left, there were only about 4 Eagles hits the band had yet to play and I was wondering how they’d get to 2 1/2 hours. The answer… dig into Walsh’s catalog. They added four of his songs into their closing sequence, including scorching versions of James Gang’s “Walk Away” and “Funk 49.” Priceless.

They closed their set with “Life in the Fast Lane” and then encored with a near-perfect version of “Hotel California” where the dual guitar solos from Walsh and touring guitarist Steuart Smith was mesmerizing.  Smith delivered pristine guitar work all night and was a nice surprise. The band came out for a 2nd encore where they dished out a raucous “Rocky Mountain Way” before sending the fully-satiated fans into the cool Orlando night with a beautiful version of “Desparado.”

We had $100 seats up in the Orlando International flight path, but it was worth every cent.  A legendary band delivering an epic show with a little help from their friends. I’d go again, but might skip the opener next time…

" The Eagles honor Glenn Frey's memory in a hit-filled set while welcoming new members   "

" When Glenn Frey died in 2016, it was hard to imagine the Eagles without him.

He was so much more than just a founding member, so much more than just the guy who sang lead vocals on so many of the hits that will continue to define their legacy.

To many fans, he'd come to represent the Eagles' very soul.

But here they are, two years later, not long after overtaking Michael Jackson's "Thriller" to reclaim their spot at No. 1 on the list of biggest-selling albums in U.S. history with "Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975)," touring sold-out arenas with two new guys drafted to replace him.

Or if not replace him, to help fill the void.

And you know what? These Eagles sounded great at Talking Stick Resort Arena, from the time they hit the stage and stood there, six musicians in a line, to start Saturday's show with a flawless display of close harmonies on "Seven Bridges Road," the Steve Young cover that became an Eagles song when they released it as the single for their 1980 album, "Eagles Live."

We got our first taste of new member Vince Gill's guitar work on the solo of that first song when he traded acoustic guitar licks with longtime sideman Steuart Smith, who adds so much to an Eagles performance, it's almost weird that he's not thought of as a proper Eagle.

Then the other new guy stepped into the spotlight, singing lead on "Take it Easy," a song his father wrote with Jackson Browne that would become the Eagles' breakthrough hit.

To say that Deacon Frey, now in his early 20s, bears an uncanny resemblance to the way his father looked in his '70s prime, with his shoulder-length hair and mustache, would be something of an understatement. And he sang it really well.

From there, the spotlight shifted to the drum kit, where Don Henley, now the only member of the Eagles who's actually featured on that biggest-selling album in U.S. history, led his bandmates in "One of These Nights."

At the song's conclusion, Henley stepped out from behind the drums to address the crowd.

"We are going to play over two hours of music for you this evening," he said. "Forget about the news. It'll all be there in the morning."

Then, he welcomed the new kids in town.

"We are very proud and delighted," he said, "to have Glenn's son Deacon up here with us. Deacon has had big shoes to fill. He's done an admirable job of stepping up."

When Henley noted that his first show with the Eagles was at Dodgers stadium, it was met with a chorus of boos.

"It's not about baseball," Henley replied with a smile. "Try doing your first gig in front of 56,000 people and see how you feel."

Then he introduced Gill, a well-respected country superstar who briefly fronted Pure Prairie League ("Let Me Love You Tonight" was his handiwork) before launching a solo career.

He's also, in Henley's assessment, "one of this nation's most beloved singer-songwriters and guitarists."

Before Gill took the spotlight, singing lead on "Take It to the Limit," Henley dedicated Saturday's performance "to Glenn and to Glenn's road manager Tommy Nixon, who lived right here in Phoenix."

Gill gave "Take It to the Limit" a soulful read, his voice a little twangier and at the same time more subdued than Randy Meisner's was on the original And he nailed that endless high note at the end.

Gill stayed on vocals for "Tequila Sunrise." Then the Eagles' five-man horn squad took the stage for "Witchy Woman," fleshing out the sound while Smith and the Eagle most likely to light up a room, Joe Walsh, played up the grit to that guitar riff, sounding more like something off John Lennon's "Plastic Ono Band" than it does on the record.

The fans, most of whom had remained in their seats through most of the preceding songs, rose to their feet to greet Walsh's first turn in the vocal spotlight, "In the City."

By that point, we'd already heard from four lead vocalists, each bringing something distinct to the mix. Then Timothy B. Schmit stepped to the mic and added one more flavor with his deeply soulful "I Can't Tell You Why."

Gill was back on lead vocals for a bittersweet reading of "New Kid in Town." Before the night was through, he'd also do the honors on "Ol' '55," "Lyin' Eyes," "Heartache Tonight" and a well-received version of his own chart-topping country hit, "Don't Let Our Love Start Slippin' Away."

At one point, Gill said, "I just want to say one sweet thing, on behalf of myself and Deacon. We are beyond honored to trying to keep up the legacy of the great Glenn Frey, singing these songs. And thank you for being so gracious to the both of us."

It should come as no surprise that a man who's made a living as a singer would manage to rise to occasion the way Gill did on his first tour as an Eagle.

As Schmit said after "Lyin' Eyes," "So how 'bout that Vince Gill? Can he sing or what?"

Oh, he can definitely sing.

As for the other new kid, Frey is obviously less experienced than Gill. In fact, I'm pretty sure he wasn't even born when Gill recorded "Don't Let Our Love Start Slippin' Away."

And the fact that Glenn Frey was his father means his father's legacy is bound to cast a greater shadow over him than any other singer they could bring into the fold.

But Deacon did the old man proud on "Peaceful Easy Feeling." It was prefaced by him saying, "Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being so welcoming to me" and ended with his father's face projected on the screen behind him in a touching tribute

The young Frey took one final lead, sharing vocals with Henley on "Already Gone" before the spotlight shifted back to Walsh for a classic from his James Gang days, a horn-fueled "Walk Away," which he followed with a wildly entertaining "Life's Been Good."

Before he got to “Life’s Been Good,” Walsh led the fans in a truly hilarious call-and-response on a series of goofy noises before coaching them on the shouting of the word “Baloney!”

“I need that in the next song,” Walsh explained. “You’ve gotta help me. I’ll tell you right where it is and when we get there, give me your best ‘baloney.’ I guarantee, going home tonight, you’re gonna say to yourself, 'I made a huge difference today.'”

He's such a total goof, and one of rock's most enduring enigmas, with the skills to back it up on lead guitar and vocals, and a dedication to the talk box solo fit to rival Peter Frampton (including a great dual-talk-box solo with Smith on "Those Shoes").

By the time he got the crowd to shout "baloney!" during "Life's Been Good," it was clear that there could be no turning back, no dipping into songs no casual fan would know or care to hear such as Schmit's really pretty rendition of that post-reunion track, "Love Will Keep Us Alive."

It was Gill on lead vocals for "Heartache Tonight," the Eagles' last chart-topping hit, and back to Walsh for one more James Gang gem (with horns), "Funk #49," before Henley closed the set with a suitably spirited "Life in the Fast Lane," also with horns and a brilliant lead from Walsh.

A trumpet player set the tone for "Hotel California," the first of two encores, which built to an epic guitar jam, like it does. And they returned to launch the second encore with another Walsh song, "Rocky Mountain Way," which featured talk box, horns and slide guitar, before ending the night on a bittersweet note with a gorgeous take on "Desperado."

By that point, any doubts that lingered going into Saturday's performance as to whether this new lineup should even exist had long since been erased. As a tribute to the Eagles' legacy, to Glenn Frey's memory and to all their music ever meant to all those fans who paid to see the Eagles of 2018?

It was as close to flawless as a fan had any right to dream it would be.

<  ------------------------    " Concert Pulse: Rocking The Classics; Eagles Top $4M Average Gross, Phil Collins Wraps $31M North America Leg, And Nick Mason’s Not So Big Secret . "

" Pollstar's Global Concert Pulse, which ranks tours by average gross per market over the last three months, sees many major new entries this week, topped by Eagles at No. 6, Bruno Mars at No. 7, and Phil Collins at No. 14 after just wrapping a $31 million North American tour leg.

The Eagles are the highest-grossing new entry on Pollstar’s Global Concert Pulse chart this week, averaging $4 million per market after major stops including three nights at the Forum near Los Angeles, stadium shows, multiple nights at Madison Square Garden and stops at new midwest arenas in Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena and Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum, which just opened in early September with The Killers.

See the full Polstar Global Concert Pulse chart, which tracks tours by average gross per market over the last three months.

Fiserv Forum general manager Raj Saha recently told Pollstar of the venue’s busy week, which brought Metallica, Foo Fighters, Eagles and the Milwaukee Bucks’ home opener to the brand-new facility in mid October.

“It was an awesome week, with five sold-out events,” said Saha, who oversees the talent and programming team at the venue. “We had 18,878 in the building for Metallica Tuesday, got that out, loaded in Foo Foo Fighters Wednesday, loaded them out, and had about a two-hour gap from the last Foo Fighters truck to leave the building before doing a floor mark for the Eagles on Wednesday. "

Recent boxoffice reports from the Eagles’ current touring include Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., Oct 12, which sold out at 12,805 tickets and grossed $2.23 million and three nights at the Forum Sept. 12-15 (41,019, $5.98 million). Don Henley, with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey in the lineup, also earlier this summer played stadiums including AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, which moved 53,584 tickets and grossed just shy of $10 million. Chris Stapleton and Vince Gill were also on the bill for some of the larger shows. After a show in Hawaii in December, the Eagles will then play Down Under and the United Kingdom.

“That was an amazing show," Saha said of the Eagles Oct. 18 stop at Fiserv Forum. "I’m not sure if you’ve seen them on this tour, but you sing the hits the whole time. It’s fantastic.”

" Review: Eagles pack all the hits into marathon Aloha Stadium show .  "

" The Eagles opened a big — and rainy — rock ‘n’ roll weekend at Aloha Stadium on Friday night with a hit-packed show that showed the band’s ability to move forward after the death of Glenn Frey while also honoring his legacy.

Frey, one of the band’s main songwriters (along with Don Henley) and lead singers/guitarists, died nearly three years ago. Last year, three core members of the legendary country-rock band — drummer Henley, guitarist Joe Walsh and bassist Timothy B. Schmit, all of whom also sing lead at times — added country star Vince Gill and Frey’s son Deacon to their lineup to handle some of the load and keep “the blood” in the band, as Henley explained it to the Star-Advertiser recently.

Rock fans are notoriously fickle about their favorite singers being replaced in bands. They quickly accepted Sammy Hagar in Van Halen, Gary Cherone … not so much.

The Eagles don’t dodge the issue. After opening with some nice harmonies on “Seven Bridges Road,” Walsh introduced Deacon Frey, who took the lead on “Take It Easy.” He’s still working to establish the stage presence that his father built over decades, but he was more than able and did his papa plenty proud.

A couple of songs later, Henley stepped out from behind his drum kit to introduce Gill, who took the wheel on “Take it to the Limit,” which Frey sang lead on after Randy Meisner left the band. Gill’s easy tenor is not as gritty as Frey’s, but he also is able to soar to higher heights, and he proved more than capable as a guitarist as well.

The questions about Gill and Frey cast aside, the Eagles pulled (almost) no punches as they embarked on a nearly two-and-a-half-hour trip through their vast discography, and even some of their members’ solo work.

Their mellower hits, such as “Lyin’ Eyes” and “New Kid in Town,” are staples on the oldies and adult contemporary radio stations and have become as comfortable as a favorite blanket over the years. They were every bit as pleasant live, with Frey’s performance of “Peaceful Easy Feeling” a highlight, punctuated by his dad’s picture projected on the three large screens.

But the show’s biggest moments were the rockers. The Eagles have an unusually deep bench of guitarists, and they all got their turns to shine, including Frey and Gill, an underrated shredder. But Walsh and longtime touring guitarist Steuart Smith did the heavy lifting and were impressive throughout, particularly on “In the City,” “I Can’t Tell You Why” and, of course, “Hotel California,” which kicked off the encore (and ended it for many in the crowd, who thought the show was done and fled the strengthening downpour rather than stick around for “Desperado” and “Please Come Home for Christmas”).

Other than the above-mentioned introductions of their new members and paying proper respect to Glenn Frey, the show was low on banter and special effects. Some light tricks and smoke were pretty much it. The band prioritized getting in as many of their hits as possible (the only major omission was “Best of My Love,” the first of the band’s five No. 1 pop singles). And the audience showed the decision was a good one, erupting with applause that was beyond the perfunctory even for album tracks and minor solo hits.

Though the crowd came out to see the Eagles, fans really got two shows in one, as local singer-songwriter Jack Johnson, backed by a full band, opened with an enjoyable 80-plus minutes.

Johnson showed his local pride right off the bat, taking the stage in a shirt emblazoned with “Kahuku the real football” and later singing his school’s alma mater, admittedly to fill time.

Though he’s had several hits himself, Johnson was chatty while the Eagles were businesslike, his set as much like a neighborhood kanikapila as a concert at the state’s largest venue.

Johnson talked about the inspiration for many of his songs, including how lucky he is that he has been with his wife since they were teens so all his love songs are about the same woman.

Though he sang his biggest hits — ”Upside Down,” “Sitting, Waiting, Wishing” and “Bubbletoes,” to name a few — the highlight of his set was the way he paraded out some of the biggest local stars to share the spotlight, saying that once he got the gig opening for the Eagles he had to “call my friends to see if they wanna jam so they can play Aloha Stadium too.”

Among the featured were Kawika Kahiapo, John Cruz (a chicken-skin-inducing rendition of “Island Style” with Cruz on slide guitar) and Paula Fuga (their duet “Country Road” and Bob Marley’s “Soul Shakedown”). After filling with a “newer song” about playing poker on Maui with Willie Nelson (“Willie Got Me Stoned and Took All My Money”), Johnson brought his guests out to join him on his hit “Better Together,” a fine conclusion to an amiable opening set.

Logistically, Friday night went smoothly except for the exodus from the parking lot, which took more than a half-hour for some. Hopefully, the stadium crew can get that fixed for tonight’s Guns N’ Roses show.   "

When you think about it, the song, "Hotel California" is just a bad "Trip Advisor" review with a three minute guitar solo.

The Eagles Soar and Perform 'Hotel California' in Its Entirety For the First Time in Las Vegas

" It’s impossible to state how monumental an album the Eagles’ Hotel California was following its 1976 release. It spawned two No. 1 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 and spent eight weeks atop the Billboard 200. The RIAA has certified it for sales of more than 26 million copies in the U.S.

But its significance came from far more than its sales success. Though not officially positioned as a concept album, its eight songs (and one instrumental reprise) nevertheless served as an unfettered, often cinematic, look at American disillusionment, especially when -- as “Life in the Fast Lane” declares -- “everything, all the time” becomes a personal manifesto. Don Henley has said the iconic title track is about the shift from “innocence to experience,” and while he may have been talking about a person, it also appropriately described America in its bicentennial year. Eleven years before Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko uttered “greed is good” in Wall Street, the Eagles already understood the corrosive forces at play when our baser instincts go unchecked and narcissism runs rampant.

Remarkably, until Friday night (Sept. 27), the Eagles had never played the album all the way through. In the first of three shows at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena, the band performed the album from front to back, following with a blazing greatest hits set that had the audience at the sold-out, 13,000-seat arena constantly on its feet. While the Eagles have not announced any plans to play the album in its entirety on a tour, hopefully the overwhelming positive reception will tilt them toward at least considering some more dates.

Below, some of the highlights from the show:

Hearing Hotel California

A little while ago, there was a challenge going around Twitter to name an album that had the greatest opening trio of songs. You’d be hard pressed to beat Hotel California, which moves from the title track into “New Kid in Town” and “Life in the Fast Lane.” While those may have been the album’s biggest hits, there’s very little filler on the set. “Wasted Time” remains one of the Eagles’ best and most unappreciated songs. The haunting lament about a lost relationship foretells themes Henley would explore in greater depth on 1989's The End of Innocence, including the magnificent “The Heart of the Matter.” Album closer “The Last Resort” serves as Henley’s first song to tackle man’s inexplicable need to destroy his environment. Friday night marked the first time the Eagles had played “Try and Love Again” since Randy Meisner, who sang lead on the track, left the band in 1977. Adding to the authenticity of the evening, Jim Ed Norman, who wrote the string arrangements and conducted the orchestra on Hotel California (most noteworthy on the instrumental “Wasted Time” reprise that opens side two and on “Last Resort”) filled the same role Friday night, leading a 46-piece orchestra and 22-member choir from UNLV.

In an amusing  nod to the album era, the show opened with a mysterious, caped man striding across the stage and placing a Hotel California disc onto a turntable. When it came time to flip the album, a woman dressed in a cigarette girl costume came and did the honors.

Vince Gill and Deacon Frey

They first played with the band in July 2017 at the Eagles’ first gigs following Glenn Frey’s 2016 death -- the official band is listed as "Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit, with Deacon Frey and Vince Gill” -- and in the subsequent two years, they have grown fully comfortable with their roles on stage while remaining appropriately deferential to Frey’s memory. Between Gill’s angelic vocal ability (he easily handled Meisner’s lead vocals on “Try and Love Again” and “Take It to the Limit” and Frey’s on “New Kid in Town” and “Lyin’ Eyes” ), his otherworldly harmonies with Henley (they are among the best harmony singers out there) and his guitar prowess, it feels like he should have always been an Eagle. Deacon Frey carries his father’s legacy lightly on his shoulders, never trying to imitate him on tracks like “Take It Easy” or “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” but instead bringing his own earthy, rootsy vocals. Together, they’ve brought a new warmth to the band.

The Enduring Quality Of The Music

At the conclusion of Hotel California, Henley spoke his first words to the audience: “We’re going to take a 20-minute break, put our heads back together and play you everything we know.” He wasn’t far from the truth. What followed was a 23-song set of solid hits (including Walsh's solo and James Gang tunes) that make up the soundtrack of any Baby Boomer or Gen X’ers lives. With no exception, the songs have aged well, but how could they fail with the Eagles’ five-part harmony and five guitar-approach (and not-so-secret weapon, guitarist Steuart Smith). There’s a reason they’re one of the top selling American bands ever with more than 150 million albums sold.

The Exuberance On Stage

Exuberance is not a word usually associated with an Eagles performance, and maybe it’s a bit strong to use here, but between Joe Walsh’s endearing goofiness (really, who else could get an arena full of people to scream “Ah, baloney” during “Life’s Been Good,” telling them if they do so, “On your way home, you’re going to think to yourself, ‘I made a huge difference today’”), sweet smiles between Walsh and Frey whenever they jammed together or the usually reserved Henley declaring “We are crusty old veterans, but you have touched our hearts,” they came pretty darn close to it Friday night. Further proof they were having a blast? The show clocked in at a little over 3 hours and 20 minutes (including intermission) making it one of the longest -- if not the longest -- shows they’ve ever played.

Don Henley’s voice

Henley always carries a significant vocal load, but Hotel California ups the ante. He does the heavy lifting on the album, singing lead on five of the eight vocal tracks. Add his other lead vocals, falsettos and harmonies on songs like “One of These Nights,” “Witchy Woman" and “Best of My Love,” and that he’s alternating between drumming and playing guitar and percussion, and it’s quite the juggling act. Not to mention he has to keep enough gas in the tank to get through the aching “Desperado” in the encore, a song with a high degree of vocal difficulty. Friday night, his voice sounded as strong and pliant as it ever has, easily hitting the highest of notes, while retaining his trademark huskiness.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/event/article-7533815/Eagles-review-Hotel-California-live-Las-Vegas-soaring-success.html

" 'I’ve never seen so many songs receive a standing ovation' - the Eagles perform Hotel California in full in Las Vegas... and it's a soaring success .  "

" The Eagles have done just about everything. They’ve sold squillions of records, taken almost as many drugs, had rows on stage, split up, reunited and buried one of their two lead singers. But until now they had never performed their most famous album in full. Welcome to the Hotel California.

With whole-album gigs, half the trick is in the timing, and they’ve got that right. Released in 1976, Hotel California was not just a classic LP but a critique of the USA as her 200th birthday approached. Its themes, from over-consumption to the drawbacks of the American Dream, are all too relevant today.

In a perfect world this concert would be taking place in Laurel Canyon, in some vast natural amphitheatre, with old hippies free to come and go. Instead it’s in Las Vegas, which, though full of music, is not known for its philosophical soft rock.

Still, it does share LA’s palm trees, pale sunsets and a taste for doomed hedonism. And it knows how to put on a show.

With 31 million copies sold, Hotel California is third on Wikipedia’s certified list of all-time bestselling albums, behind Thriller by Michael Jackson (47 million) and Their Greatest Hits (41 million), also by the Eagles. Most of those hits will feature tonight too, but they’re tour staples that rang out around Wembley Stadium only this summer. So the show is really about one album.

It starts with an actor in a cape doing something that was commonplace in 1976, but now feels exotic: lowering an LP on to a turntable. Hotel California the album opens with Hotel California the single.

Slowish, stately, six minutes long, it’s not a natural show-starter but works because, with its different moods, it’s a gig in miniature. At 72, Don Henley has a few creaks in his voice, which add to the impact, like peeling paint. It would take a spine of stone not to tingle.

The album is front-loaded, starting with three hits. Vince Gill, the country singer who’s been the Eagles’ guest star since 2017, stands in for the late Glenn Frey on New Kid In Town and exudes easy warmth. (Frey’s son Deacon is on stage too, but his moment comes later.) Henley returns for Life In The Fast Lane, his vocals sparring with Joe Walsh’s riff. Part of the Eagles’ secret is the way they use rock guitars: maximum fun, minimum bombast.

The lesser-known tracks are like loving parents giving a shy child a boost. Halfway through Wasted Time the lights behind the band go up to reveal an orchestra with a white-haired conductor – Jim Ed Norman, who did the original string arrangements. ‘We met in college in 1968,’ Henley says proudly. Typical: the musician he’s stayed friends with the longest is one who wasn’t in the Eagles.

Hotel California culminates in The Last Resort, making only its tenth live appearance in 43 years. ‘She packed her hopes and dreams,’ Henley sings, ‘like a refugee.’ Half folk song, half history lesson, The Last Resort shows America what she’s made of.

By now the orchestra has been joined by a choir. The Eagles’ sound, with its glowing harmonies, barely needs them, but they add to the sense of occasion – and the delight of the crowd. I’ve never seen so many songs receive a standing ovation.

It’s a memorable evening that deserves a wider audience than the 40,000-odd who witnessed one of the three nights in Vegas. The video relay, shot mostly with unmanned cameras, was strikingly sharp, which makes you wonder if the Eagles will do the show as a Netflix special, like Springsteen On Broadway. Or they could go one better than The Boss and turn it into a world tour. "

" The Kats! Bureau at this writing is Westgate Superbook. The book’s director, Jay Kornegay, was featured for like three seconds on the Vegas Golden Knights scoreboard screen at T-Mobile Arena on Wednesday.

This is how you know you have lived in Las Vegas for a few moons.

We have made wagers on the NFL action at Kornegay’s haunt, but not on the Eagles of Philadelphia. We did, however, win with the Eagles of rock ’n’ roll on Saturday night at MGM Grand Garden Arena. Hit after hit after hit.

In an era where superstars lop musicians to save money, the band cut no corners in its music production, lining up a 46-piece orchestra dotted with Vegas players, along with several members of the choir from the UNLV College of Fine Arts.

Loved the touch at the start of the show, a well-suited gent placing “Hotel California” on a turntable. Later a female counterpart dramatically flipped the disc after the band finished Side 1.

The Eagles’ catalogue and musicianship is so wide-ranging that Joe Walsh and Vince Gill can share the same setlist (the bemused look on Gill’s face as he strummed to Walsh’s “Life’s Been Good to Me” was priceless). The place was packed, the sound at the arena was exceptional — none of the echo so prevalent in Vegas arena shows — and the music superior.

I remember, years ago, Don Henley remarking in an interview with the London Daily Telegraph, “We don’t worry about the passage of time very much. We are fortunate because we play music that is not faddish; it is composed of time-honoured elements. Our style of dress is not trendy. We’ve never pranced around on stage; we’ve always just sort of loitered.”

No, the Eagles will never be mistaken for the Backstreet Boys. But wow, what a generous unspooling of classic contemporary music. More than three hours, with an intermission, all of it flawless. They can loiter here whenever they want. "

Eagles will open their 2020 tour for two nights in Atlanta at State Farm Arena on Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020.
A third show has been added.
Atlanta is an Eagles town, very sadly.

Apparently so is St Paul.

Who is in the mood for some old fashioned picketing?

Joey, you can come to, as long as you wear a p*ssy hat.

Joe Walsh solo is excellent. Mixed with others not so much.

I saw that reunion Eagles concert in the 90s... as Rick said, the only good,
and the funnest parts, were the Joe Walsh songs...
He was really animated during his songs...the rest was rather boring...
they just sat on stools at RFK stadium...so glad I only spent $10 in the parking lot for the tkt.

Long story short...not a fan, never have been
