Title: Upcoming Archival (Bootleg Series) Wishes
Post by Pdog on Nov 17th, 2011 at 7:22pm
So, what do you want... You got the best, with Brussels and Handsome Girls (Live In Texas)... Looks like we are supposed to get 4 more maybe 6 in 2012... Holy crap!!!
What if Leeds 71 was found intact, meaning including the first songs that were never bootlegged? Could be out there, we didn't know this Brussels release was coming... We don't know shit...
How about El Macambo 77... We know that is recorded on multi tracks. I gotta figure, they will out do the bootleggers, and go toe to toe...  I'm so excited, I'm puking...

Lexington, KY 1978

Something from the 1976
ETC

Trying to be realistic - so obviously we can forget stuff like the 100 Club in '86 and those kind of elusive gigs. Warm up shows are unlikely too, as the band arent usually tour-ready.

Complete, unedited shows are the way to go, unquestionably. As we've got Brussels '73, Fort Worth '78 and last year the blu ray of Ladies & Gents, its unlikely that any of the releases next year will come from 1972-73 or 1978.

A complete show with Brian Jones.

A complete show from 1969 - ideally the one MSG show thats never even circulated as an audience recording.

A complete 1975 show. My preference is for New York over the much-bootlegged LA run.

El Mocambo 1977. Apparently the tapes from the first night (4th March) were unusable, so a recording of the 5th March show (some of which has been bootlegged and which has also appeared on LYL)

A full 1981 show. Ideally from the last month or so of the tour. Hampton 18/12/81 would be the obvious choice. A blu-ray/DVD release would be even better!

One (or more) of the club shows from the 1995 European Tour. Paradiso (two shows played there), Brixton or L'Olympia. There is also an (uncirculated) complete pro shot of the Brixton show in existence. No doubt all four shows are in their archives in full as they were all filmed (the 2nd Paradiso show was screened live -  in full - in a nearby public park)

Buenos Aires 1998. Although a properly mixed DVD/blu ray of one of these shows is a must. The 30th March show was broadcast live (just a couple of songs incomplete) and the shows were taped for No Security (two songs from the 4th night were used).

Bremen 98 was great.

But that was a broadcast (only audio) and not officially released.

If I remember correctly.

But I'd like to see more 75 as great as 78 was shown.

75 should be so good, it might change my political status...

Nicaraguan Benefit concert 01/18/1973 will be sure a cool one  , or the complete "Welcome to new york MSG 72 ", or the gig in memory of Stu at 100 club in 1986.

didn't even think of Paradiso... that would be great. El Macambo is highly likely, I'm torn between wanting to know and really liknig the surprise we just got.
They don't seem to have a problem with this stuff clashing with officially released and widely circulated bootlegs, so anything is on the table basically, and then I think the start to take stuff off the table. Hopefully Europe 76 is off and some USA 75 is on...  was poor to mediocre early on. I like the idea of 1969 stuff, a little... but there's nothing documenting 1970 or 1971, and there's some multi tracks I'm sure. Brain Jones era goes without saying, but not sure if they are thinking about that, I wasn't til it got mentioned.

Any or the best 1970 European tour?

Sir Morgans 81?

It's great to be a Stones fan!

And it's Friday!

Think they'll chose LA 75, Baton Rouge 75 (opening night) or Knebworth 76?

Who's going to Church this Sunday?

LA 75 rocked.

Imagine the SBD of that show.

Whewwwww...

Bremen was a live TV broadcast shown across several dozen countries in Europe and Africa.

Excellent show, featuring a superb Mick and Keith duet on 'Memory Motel' - thankfully with Dave Matthews nowhere to be seen. They even managed to do a half decent version of 'Anybody Seen My Baby' for about the only time on the whole tour.

Anything pre 69 would be great too!

She Said Yeah rocked hard back then, still does today.

A whole black and white show w/ Jones in there and all the crazy girls.

I want something that non Stones fans would simply say,  Holy Shit!

and a pre-GHS setlist, almost identical to the USA leg set... We def. need to see documents for 71 and 72 setlists IMO... and I would love to see something from 1970 Europe... I'm cool going w/o anything from 69... my top is still el macombo... after that... I hope I can relax...

I have era preference (68-73), but this is a good suggestion as to what should be released, giving credence to all lineups of the band.

I would like to see a cleaned up Marquee Club/1971 offering.

I'm going to make my prediction and wishlist...
after long consideration of what i want, and think is highly likely...

Leeds 71, complete... they have the full tapes and better quality than what was booted from the incomplete BBC tapes... if they released Let It Rock, that means the band had the full show multi tracks to work with...
LA 75 and the video as well... not sure how much footage they have or if they will combine the shows to make type of montage looking complete concert...
El Macombo 77 - nuff said
Hampton 81 - with a video release of the show as well or at least take the Hal Ashby movie and fix the audio/ video quality and make a great blu ray disc...
Oakland Halloween 1994 - great show, Keith was on fire and the video is fun and could be made into something really special.

IMO, they could do this easily, and really satisfy us die hard thirsty fans... there's not alot of money in this, but it will defintely help promote a tour, and reignite the passion...
this is what I'm hoping they are thinknig as well... they seem to be on the right track, finally getting it right...
and keep the fire going and get working on some more deluxe editions... we got great stuff to be dug out for SF, GHS, IORR, B&B, ER and even a few nuggets for Tattoo...

El Mocambo!!

It's such a varied setlist, really shows what the band was capable of.  I thought I read somewhere that Jimmy Page said something to the effect that all was forgiven Keith after he heard the tape of Dance Little Sister from this show.

Very well recorded also.  Was this filmed??

We live in hope.

Atlanta 1981 Fox Theater. A brilliant show that Robert Palmer (Rolling Stone critic not the musician) stated, "after seeing the Stones on every tour since 1964, I can honestly say that the show at The Fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta in October (1981) was the best show I have ever seen period!" This was the same show that I attended, and I can say unequivocally, was the greatest rock and roll show I have ever seen by any band ever. It is the show that galvanized me as a Stones' fan for life. It was also the reason that Keith decided to start his first ever solo (Winos-1988) tour at The Fox (I was at that show as well, and saw Little Feat the next night there too!). Hands down the greatest venue that I have ever seen any show at, and it's not even close. That includes all NYC venues!

Oh, and yes, El Mocambo!

i assume since they recorded every show, they have it... I don't know if they recorded everything noto multi tracks, I do know some multi tracks came out as bootlegs, mostly stuff regarding the film and live broadcast... the rest was all mono soundboards... Fox only circulated as a audience I think... It's a theater show, but it was well into the tour roo wasn't it? So the band must've been tight... if it's all that and a bag a chips, or if we have video of it, that is good... Definitely a good call...

Brussels '73 Now Available From Google Music

The Google Music store is now offering the Rolling Stones' long-bootlegged October 1973 Brussels show.

You can download the whole thing from the Android Marketplace, or get a free sample of a rare performance of the song "Dancing With Mr. D". Five more shows will be released over the next year, so stay tuned for more announcements.

Great  5 shows  !

No. It wasnt, unfortunately.

The Stones would have got their crew to record almost every show since the early 70's, so in that context, they'd all exist as raw soundboards.

Being professionally recorded on multi-track is another thing, though. There would, undoubtedly, be a few from every tour. After all, now that we have a live document released from 1973, this means that every proper length Stones tour since 1972 has had an official live release either on DVD/VHS, CD or both.

1972 - Ladies & Gentlemen (DVD). Live album recorded in Fort Worth & Philly and mixed, but unreleased

1973 - nothing from Australia, but a live album from Europe released in 1973.

1975-76-77  - Love You Live

1978 - Live in Texas (DVD & CD)

1981/82 - Still Life (CD), Lets Spend The Night Together (DVD)

1989/90 - Flashpoint (CD), At The Max (DVD)

1994/95 - Stripped (CD), Giants Stadium (VGS - was this ever on DVD?), Miami (DVD)

1997/98 - BTB live from St Louis (DVD), No Security (CD)

Nothing from '99 - I suppose we could count the US leg as a separate tour

2002/03 - Live Licks (CD), Four Flicks (DVD)

2005/07 - Shine A Light (CD & DVD), Biggest Bang (DVD)

Most of those releases come from multiple sources, so its reasonable to assume there are professionally recorded source tapes for every show that was considered for release.

Thanks for the info Gazza.

I was streaming netflix the other night and came across a Australian documentary on the Stones.  In one of the clips Mick was talking about going through the live tapes to come up with the cuts on Love You Live.  The interviewer asked him how much tape did he have to go through.  Mick said, well 54 shows 2 hours a show, but he also said he didn't listen to all the shows because he knew which ones were badly played or poorly recorded.  So it sounds to me like all the shows, at least in the '75-'76 time frame, were recorded with the potential to be used on a live recording.  It was quite interesting listening to Mick complain about the engineers of that time, which in his opinion did not get how a live show should be recorded.  He then goes on about his ideas on how it should be done.

I'd love some previously unheard Brian Jones era shows and the complete El Mocambo. That said, I am completely saturated with stuff from 1969 forward so almost anything is anti-climatic.

Maybe a deluxe Stripped with complete sources for latter era stuff.

someone on IORR suggested a march 1964 recording of 14 live studio songs for Radio Luxembourg. Sound like a real 'new' gem out of the vaults.
Bill Wyman is mentioned to be the owner of the original recording tape... :nooslajaleisk

add the 1968 NME recordings of Satisfaction and JJF as a bonus and voila: there's a big surptise!!

Any idea when the next of these bootlegs is coming out? If they said another 5 in the next year I'm hoping the next one will come out within the next month or so.

It seems to me another show that could be put out there is the 1969 Hyde Park show, Mick Taylor's first show.

I'd be surprised if thats one of them, to be honest. Most of the gig is officially available as a DVD, plus its a pretty ropey performance.

And yes, five in the next year would suggest that we might hear something about another release next month. Here's hoping.

:wow :smilebria :perverted

They had left little clues before, I went through, looking for new pics... but didn't see anything... They do have Ox 73 tour poster on the site... A day or two before the release date, which we don't know... they may add a pic or two as a clue....
I'm pretty sure we can narrow it down to 71, 75, 77 or 81...

It was posted on their official site. They've said there will be 6 archive releases over the next year and its now been two months since the last one.

i'm a georgia cracker, maybe atlanta fox theater 1981? i understand omni in 1975 was a real good show tho you can't really tell by the bootleg. Prob not the 1978 show at the fox, it was the second show of the tour and apparently a ramshackle affair. the great Robert Palmer wrote the 81 fox show was the best stones show he ever saw.

Fair enough.

They've already said a week or two ago its from the Ron Wood era. Knowing that, why would anyone feel disappointed or bewildered when they announce details of a show from after 1973?

Expanded and Remastered Music News

Tattoo You: Rolling Stones Digital Archive Unveils 1981 Concert

http://theseconddisc.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/stones-hampton-coliseum1.jpg?w=300&h=180

When the Rolling Stones opened the Stones Archive for business late in 2011 with the first-ever legitimate release of The Brussels Affair, it was greeted as somewhat of a mixed blessing.  The Archive promised to be a place where fans of the World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band “can listen to unheard music, view unseen photographs and films, and look at rare merchandise. Fans have the opportunity to buy items such as signed lithographs, deluxe box sets, even personalised merchandise and tour gear in the shop.”  Of course, some lamented the lack of physical counterparts for the Archive’s releases.  Others were distressed by the lack of high-fidelity FLAC files for American customers; while purchasers abroad can choose between FLAC and MP3, the Archive’s American licensee (Google Music, via Android Market) offers only MP3.  So it’s “business as usual” for the just-announced second release from the Archives.  Whereas The Brussels Affair preserved a 1973 concert, the Archives jumps ahead to the waning days of 1981 for Hampton Coliseum: Live 1981.

Recorded in Hampton, Virginia on December 18, 1981, the digital album presents a lengthy concert from the final leg of the Tattoo You tour, and also one of six tour dates taped for radio’s King Biscuit Flower Hour.  That night in Virginia, the Stones tore through some of their latest hits from the critically and commercially successful album: “Start Me Up,” “Hang Fire,” “Little T&A,” “Black Limousine,” “Neighbours” and “Waiting on a Friend.”  Though Tattoo You was largely assembled from spruced-up outtakes (some dating back as far as a decade), the material felt fresh, and the Rolling Stones were rewarded with their final No. 1 album to date in America.  The album was still on audience members’ minds at the time of the December gig, having just been released in late August.

Hit the jump for more on Hampton Coliseum: Live 1981, including the full track listing!

Like The Brussels Affair, Hampton Coliseum is a much-bootlegged concert appearing for the first time in remastered sound, and early reports have indicated that the new release is a distinct remix from the booted versions.  Highlights include Mick Jagger leading an audience sing-along during “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” and joking with saxophone great Ernie Watts, who joined the Stones on the expansive tour.  (He took over the parts played by the uncredited saxophone colossus, Sonny Rollins, on Tattoo You.)  Jagger was deadpan as he informed the audience that Ernie is no relation to drummer Charlie Watts! The Stones paid homage to their Motown contemporaries with roaring takes on Smokey Robinson and the Miracles’ “Going to a Go Go” and The Temptations’ “Just My Imagination.”  And the hits just keep on coming in the concert’s final songs: “Honky Tonk Women,” “Brown Sugar,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Satisfaction.”

Wolfgang’s Vault has been offering this concert for sale, but the Stones Archive edition expands that version of the title with four additional tracks: “20 Flight Rock,” “Going to a Go Go,” the complete “Let Me Go” and the band introductions.   Hampton Coliseum Live 1981 is available now at Android Market as 320 kbps MP3s for the price of $4.99 for the entire concert.  As the title just went on sale today, the official Stones Archive site hasn’t yet been updated, but we’re confident that it soon will be.  The Android Market link can be found below!

Just listen to it  today,  my  swinging pigs  "coffret"  , it's sure one of the worst tour of the Rolling Stones , ron Wood guitar sound is at the height of the nulite !

They play too SPEED, really crappy one , the choice of this one  is like the stones, they would become old farts?

I'm so glad I'm busy, and also patient... I have to wait and am ok waiting to hear this...
I never liked the boots of the show, the mix was so messy, everything seemed meshed together and it was just loudly mastered... no seperation and if you turned it up, distorted.... I knew it was a great performace... now we will have a great document of it... the time trip back to the early eighties is going to be sweet... nice article, thanks G

Limiting the choice of archive releases commemorating and celebrating their 50th anniversary as a band to a four year period between 1969 to 1973 sort of defeats the entire point of the exercise, no?

Gazza you are right , but i really don't apreciate the 1981/82 tour i think it's their worst so far(maybe because of their first Wireless Guitars),even if for me the best period is taylor area  .anyway i 'm curious to ear a perfect  sounding gig with Brian Jones ! Tota was also a good period .hope that the next one or others will be ok for me with few jems that we don't know ...

"Limiting the choice of archive releases commemorating and celebrating their 50th anniversary as a band to a four year period between 1969 to 1973 sort of defeats the entire point of the exercise, no?"

Exactly.  One must view this from the business standpoint of the Rolling Stones.  Business moves product, the main product for the Stones being concert attendance, merchandise, etc.

In my view, releasing these shows is a clever way of creating demand for the next tour.  They can't possibly be making money on these releases.  Sort of a marketing loss leader to generate the big income a tour will provide.

If I were to guess, I would say each release will cover a tour later than the previous release and most likely be from a different part of the world.  Next up, maybe the '90 Urban Jungle from London, then possibly a '95 South American show or Japanese show.

The Stones are a worldwide affair, they've got a big area to cover.

I'm loving Hampton.  I had it blasting in the car on the way to work & as pdog said the nice thing about this versus the bootleg is that it doesn't get distorted when it is blasted really loud.  The mix is also great, like Brussels Affair, I have gained a greater appreciation for Bill Wyman bass playing.

So with 2 down & 4 to go the question is what could be left.  The Stones seem to be very in touch with what the hardcore fans want to see released since Brussels Affair, Handsome Girls, & Hampton '81, arguably the three most popular boots have been released right out the gate.  Therefore, unless they are going strickly in chronological order I have to believe that El Mocambo will be one of the next four released.

After that, I have to believe there will be at least one release from the 1989-2006 period.  Since they seem to be going with popular boots or telecasts which probably have the best possible sound source I'm guessing the top three candidates are Atlantic City '89, & Paradiso '95.  I'm hoping they don't just take the audio off the Voodoo Lounge DVD show in Miami (although I love that tour) or the 2003 MSG telecast as much of it is already on Live Licks.  I actually hope they pull out some show from the No Security tour with some really different setlists.

Assuming they only took one from the 89-06 period (probably not the case) however- what other shows would be left?  There are so many but I'm trying to think of the real popular boots/live broadcasts.  I think Marquee from '71 would be great.  I'd love to see a Brian Jones one but I don't know how realistic that is-Did they tour Europe in '67? Was that Brian's final tour with them & are there any quality boots of that out there?

I tthink LA '75 or Aux Abbitors from Paris in '76 would be other candidates but those are pretty close to Love You Live.  Anyway you cut it I think this is great!!!   :perverted

Just downloaded it and listening now (on FLAC)

and...

It's a monster. Even to my ageing lugs (battered by years of listening to loud music), the sound absolutely blows the bootlegs out of the water.  Great job by Bob Clearmountain.

Highlights are the best live version ever of "Let It Bleed" and a riproaring "Just My Imagination"

:perverted

They toured continental Europe in spring 1967 - the final tour with Brian. There's a radio broadcast in circulation of the Paris gig from 11th April and somewhat primitive audience recordings of a few other shows, but nothing that I would think would be releasable, unless they have something that we don't know about.

IF this Stones Archives thing is solely a 6-show deal to cover their 50 years as a band, then - taking personal taste out of the equation - logic dictates that there should be a show from the era with Brian Jones and a couple from 1989 onwards. That would leave one and a mid-70's show would be the most likely, I would think - either a 1975 ToTA concert or an El Mocambo release.

Of course, if its an ongoing project which will continue beyond their 50th anniversary, then its a bottomless pit and it doesnt really matter what's next or in what sequence - we'll get every era eventually.

The Marquee 71 show is not a good performance. They were so dissatisfied with it that they wouldnt even let it be shown in the UK. Leeds is a much better gig, and as it was a radio broadcast (in mono) would be a more likely candidate for a 1971 release - ideally if it's in stereo and includes the first two songs, which were not broadcast and which have never circulated.

Good stuff Gazza. I really hope they do even more then these 6 releases but regardless I'm very thankful for what we are being given.  When you think about it, with the exception of the cost to have these remixed & remastered by Bob Clearmountain the cost of putting these out is very little.  There is no production costs of manufacturing & distributing CDs.  They basically remaster them & upload them to a website.  That's why they can be provided for dirt cheap.

The real question I have is is there a way for me to get lossless versions of these in the US without my computer filling up with viriuses when I go to download them?  :Youmakeagrownmancrylikejoey

This release is really terrific - the Clearmoutain mix does lend a certain freshness to what is a very familiar 30 year-old recording - I first heard it on 12/18/81 while recording onto cassette off the radio.  A few observations:

-- great to hear the guitars from the very beginning on Under My Thumb.
-- Mick's guitar is all but gone from When the Whip Comes Down
-- a shame Keith's vocals are buried a bit, especially on LSTNT
-- it seems a sligh bit of trimming occurred on Neighbors, Let Me Go and a few other songs
-- Time is on My Side vocals are unmistakeably overdubbed - sound not quite the same as Still Life, but definitely not from the original recording
-- a couple of brief snippets of Miss You are also overdubbed

These don't seem to be recent overdubs, but rather from early 82 for Still Life/KBFH purposes?  Again, not a complaint, merely observing.  Finally, Keith is definitely louder in the mix.  This is not a complaint either as I feel this may be his best playing live - ever. Blasphemous to some I know, but he was amazing this entire tour.  In my opinion, the black telecaster custom guitar tone coupled with his evolution as a player by 1981 is his finest onstage period.  Overall, what a fantastic release.

Bill is one of the other four. This was a concert poster for the Pontiac Silverdome shows in 1981.

Not bad, warts and all, but what a shoddy version of "Under my Thumb", not quite as bad as the first night, but nowhere as good as the "Still Life" version, speeding it up as the tour progressed was a good idea...I'm partial to that very version because that's what turned me on to the Stones big time in 1982!

They certainly had some roughness to them left back in '81, man, taking a crappy song like Neighbors on the road (I loved it back in its day), a bit as if they'd played "Mean Disposition" on the VL tour!

Overall they were on their way down compared to 1978 though, less energy, and both Ronnie and Keith aren't playing as well, stadium antics probably didn't help.

If you watch the video, Under My thumb's maybe a bit messy because of the unusual way they took the stage at that particular show, with the revolving stage thing. It looks a bit chaotic so little wonder it took them a while to hit their stride on it.

Good point, I'll need to dig out the video but based on the applause it sounds like it was a..staged arrival ;-) I'm still pretty sure the Still Life version is a quite a bit faster...man that opening piano, the announcement and the powerful weaving guitars...that's burnt into my memory for ever, guess that was a bit of a revelation that day listening to it at the music store (just had teeth pulled out and my mum was offering me an LP to cheer me up...).

Some of the footage of the concert I've looked up on YouTube looks very familiar to me, but I don't remember where I could have seen this. I doubt it will, but I hope this will be the next DVD/Blu-Ray release, if not released sometime later on.

Little T & A, Tumbling Dice, All Down The Line, Hang Fire, Let It Bleed, Start Me Up and Brown Sugar are from Meadowlands, 5th November
Going To A Go Go, YCAGWYW, She's So Cold, Miss You and Satisfaction come from Meadowlands, 6th November

Everything else is from Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, Az, 13th December

Hampton Roads was televised in the US (maybe in Canada too, I don't know), but nowhere else. Promo videos for the two Still Life singles (Going To A Go Go and Time is On My Side) featured footage of the Hampton show, although the version of Going To A Go used as the single and on the album came from Largo, Maryland.

Was it actually shown on HBO? The bit at the start where the naked girl has all the stations listed on various parts of her anatomy suggests it was shown by satellite on several local stations.  It was also shown by closed-circuit in cinemas as well and broadcast on the radio.

I remember that Rod Stewart's concert from the LA Forum on the same night was also broadcast live on TV (not sure what station). Unlike the Stones' one, it was shown in other countries too - we got it in the UK a few weeks later.

Under My Thumb on Still Life comes from the first of the three Meadowlands shows (5th November)
Satisfaction comes from Tempe 13th December.

So, neither of those performances duplicates versions from the shows used for LSTNT movie.

Lets Spend The Night Together, Shattered and Time is on My Side on 'Still Life' come from Hampton 18/12/81
Just My Imagination comes from the final show of the tour, Hampton 19/12/81
Start Me Up and Beast of Burden (the non-album b-side) are from Chicago 25/11/81
Twenty Flight Rock, Go Go (both 9th December) and Let Me Go (8th December) are from Largo, Maryland

Now youhave me thinking Gazza and Dadrob...back then, for the most part there was only HBO and Showtime as I recall it...but now that Robdad says it...I do recall a special BLACK BOX that you may have needed to get the signal, hence, a possible separate feed...an UHF one at that...so maybe it was just done thru local cable companies and not actually HBO...

I was 17...so, who knows...I just assumed it was HBO...like I said...it was pretty much all there was...even MTV was less than 4months old at the time...

Rolling Stones Jagger & Richards Remember Stage Crasher from ’81 Concert
by: Chris M. Junior 2 days ago

When you’ve toured as much as the Rolling Stones, it can be really hard to differentiate one show from another. But the band’s gig on Dec. 18, 1981, in Hampton, Virginia — now available as ‘Hampton Coliseum (Live 1981),’ the second official Stones concert bootleg — was certainly memorable for Keith Richards and Mick Jagger.
The way Richards describes it, that’s the one “where the guy ran onstage” as the Stones were closing out the concert with ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.’

“Security was a bit slow, and I saw some guy heading straight for Mick,” Richards says in a recent video interview. “I saw nobody between him and Mick … I have no idea what this guy is gonna do. … All I know is that he’s trying to get his hands on Mick, and this I have to prevent, and I do have a weapon in my hands.”

Richards removed his black Fender Telecaster and took a swing at the man, hitting him on top of his left shoulder, the guitarist recalls. Once security intervened, Richards went back to using the Tele for its primary purpose.

“The damn thing stayed in tune, and this is the greatest [advertisement] for Fender that I can give you,” Richards says with a laugh.

Jagger remembers the show’s custom stage with its “enormously long” walkways, which, in retrospect probably weren’t worth the money: “I think I went up there once,” he says.

Rolling Stones Release Videos from New ’81 Archive Live Album
by: Billy Dukes 2 days ago

The Rolling Stones‘ official YouTube page has unlocked four new videos from a 1981 show the band filmed for Pay-per-view at the Hampton Coliseum in Virginia. It’s the same show from which they recently released their second archival downloadable live album, a look a the rock band in their prime, and a highlight reel of at least one of the more talked about moments in Stones’ history.
“I’m not sure how many people were able to actually watch it on Pay-per-view because Pay-per-view is (was?) notoriously impossible to get,” Mick Jagger says in a separate video at the band’s archive site. The sound and energy from the show are captured almost flawlessly, and the video is as clean as you could ask for. One can’t help but chuckle at the styles of the day, including Jagger’s tight football pants and Charlie Watts’ bowl cut.

Performances of ‘Black Limousine,’ ‘Little T&A,’ ‘She’s So Cold’ and ‘Satisfaction’ are included in the recently released video vault. During ‘Satisfaction,’ Keith Richards takes a swing at a fan he feels is heading for Mick Jagger. So he uses the only weapon he has.

“That Telecaster is a really handy swanker,” Richards says. “I just took it off and saw that he was definitely going for Mick and nobody else was gonna get in the way so I just swung it and caught him right there (in the neck).” The guy was OK, but more importantly “the damn thing stayed in tune, and this is the greatest advert for Fender.” That scene is at the 1:15 point in the fourth video.

I would love to see the Leeds show.  But notice that on Brussels Affair, they were too cheap to pay Chuck Berry royalties and cut out "Bye, Bye, Johnnie."  This doesn't bode well for future live covers, though "Let it Rock" has of course been anthologized before.

P.S., Can we get the guy who ran onstage at Hampton 1981 to report on this forum?

"Bye Bye Johnny" wasn't played in Europe 1973.
It was, however, played on the 1972 North American tour, and was not cut out from "Ladies & Gentlemen...The Rolling Stones".

I had no idea it was so soon, guess my Stones alarm clock just knew to go off... got that itch... I'd like to hear 1975 in all it's glory, without the LYL dubs...

WHICH Los Angeles show? Would you know please?
I'm dying to find out; but I can't check googlemusic as I'm in Europe.

If it's "LA Friday" then that would be 11th July, which WAS a Friday.

Title: Re: Upcoming Archival (Bootleg Series) Wishes
Post by Erik_Snow on Apr 2nd, 2012 at 6:49am
Yes I know, Gazza, but I don't think we can "trust" it to be the friday show just because of the title, because they are using "famous bootleg titles" for their releases. And the "LA Friday" bootleg was the Sunday show.
If it really is the July 11th show....then they made a poor choice, as it's the definitive worst show of LA....and one of the worst show of the entire tour, as well (IMO)

It's hard to tell right now...no notaion that I can find.
There are 24 songs on it and the setlists for the LA shows
are all the same ...The 2nd show was professionally
filmed...so maybe that one, July 10, 1975

No it's the July 11th show that's available on video.
The setlist doesn't say us which show it is, that's true, but somebody need to download, and listen to a song or two. (wish I could do that myself)

we will get an idea soon enough which specific show/shows it is... There's folks out there who have memorized the Millard tapes and can decipher every bit... may take some time, but if The Stones have mish moshed the tapes, it will be reconciled!!! I just hope it sounds good!

July 9th and July 12th is better than July 13th; but July 13th is still fuckin great

According to the ones who's been able to download this; this is a mixture of several LA shows. July 13th, for the most.

GREAT release!

Yet they've actually given the show the title "L.A. Friday" - is that correct?

How difficult would THAT have been to amend (they could have used the old 'Who Went to Church On Sunday?' title to avoid confusion)

I've listened to about half of this  so far- I ran late for work because I wanted to download it so that I could blast it in the car on my way to and from work (I have a long commute).  At one point (I forget after which song because I've only heard it once Mick says "This is our last night in Los Angeles...this year!" So unless it's a mix of different night's it's definitely the last show.

I think this recording clearly debunks a few things... one, that without Taylor they sucked. Two, that Ronnie not only shines, he was meant to be a Stones if anyone not in the original line up already was...
what it also does, it gives me a real idea of what I missed, but now can hear.. for many of us LYL was just not it... no matter how much we wanted it to be!!!

Might be on the same album (although the credits on LYL tell a few lies in order to preserve some publishing rights) but '77 wasn't in any way similar to 75-76.

We already had a movie and a live album from 1981 - didnt stop them releasing Hampton as a download as well.

Every major tour from 1972 onwards now has a live album or an archive release (unless you count No Security which was sort of a tour within a tour)

El-mo'-fuckin-cambo!

If theyre intent on releasing well-known 'titles' (even if the track listings and sources get changed around a bit) then you'd think "Live R Than You'll Ever Be" must be in with a good chance of a touch-up for a release.

I don't think that's much of a problem anymore.

They SHOULD release a Brian Jones-era show. If they're going to honour or mark their 50th anniversary, it would be ridiculous to ignore that period altogether (the period for which they'll forever be most associated to the wider public) as if it didnt exist.

I agree totally, the only drawback would be the screaming, but that's expected, I don't know if they practiced well enough for a tour in the 60's with all the screaming, maybe they figured nobody can hear us anyway, & didn't take it that seriously, I don't know what they did back then to get ready for a tour, not like today when there's no screaming.

Are there any good boots of the Brian era out there? What did the setlist look like in '67?

I hope that they decide to do even more of these downloads in the future.  It's dirt cheap for fans and while I imagine their sales are huge, I'd guess 99% of the price is profit.  There is no manuafacturing or distribution costs.  Basically they just need someone to clean them up and remaster them & someone to put together some cool artwork and then upload them to the Google website.  They are obviously putting out all the biggest boots first, but I would imagine the could do this every 2 months for the next 50 years if they want! I hope 3 more is not the end!!

still hoping that u.s. residents get a chance to buy the flacs, but this release was too much to pass up... i bought the mp3s, and am thrilled i did. ycagwyw is an all-time fave, and it sounds the best i have heard it here. the whole show rips. some crossfades, but all notes played are present (i think), and the two billy tunes get included, too, which is a nice touch. millard's tapes were actually pretty close, in spite of how many times they were stepped on. funny they called it "la friday," but maybe they are just using the commonly known titles (i thought the actual bedspring boot was not the show they released)...

would love to see the el mocambo come out as a box set-everything they have in a nice package with pics, etc.

for a one show candidate for this archival series, i would dig seeing one of the australia '73 shows, something from europe in the seventies, other than knebworth '76,  or a complete '69 gig like from charlotte or seattle that just shreds (with a sympathy that is complete)...

all i'm saying is, all the stuff out there before was audience stuff from LA... and all those different versions, was people messing with EQ, compressing, trying to remove crowd noise, enhance some instrument... you can only do so much with a recording that doesn't have multi tracls, let alone is just an aud recording... We got something we never really had before, this isn't a official release of a previos boot, b/c unlikne the archives, this never circulated in a soundboard version period!

Title: Re: Upcoming Archival (Bootleg Series) Wishes
Post by macdaddy on Apr 5th, 2012 at 8:43am
agreed, this release is something special, which is why i dove in, even if i disagree with the model here in the u.s.

re: previous boots, all i said was i am surprised at how close the millard source is, even though most of what i have heard has been touched (i think i said "stepped on" earlier) more times than one can count. certainly this official release is the best this show has sounded. i dont think anybody would try to argue against that...

and it is great.

along with ycagwyw, wild horses, might have its finest live moment, here, too.

Interesting that the Stones official youtube channel have uploaded this video of IORR from LA'75 to promote the new archives release :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6kagl0gcI0&feature=player_embedded

Great to see it in perfect quality, although aren't they re-writing history again by claiming it's from the 13th July show that they've just released on stonesarchive.com ?

I havent compared the two, but surely this footage is from the circulating video from 11th July.

For what it's worth, when this was released a few days ago the offical press release on Facebook stated that the show being released was from Sunday however, many of the boots of the show were mistakening labeled "LA Friday"  as if it was the Friday show.  The said they kept the name "LA Friday" to keep it true to the original release.  They make it sound like what has been known as LA Friday was the Sunday show all along.  Now that wouldn't explain Mick's church rant but perhaps the 2 shows were mixed together and much of LA Friday was Sunday all along.

Everyone follow?  :nooslajaleisk :blankfriggingstare1 :pukey :nomames :wow :aimama :forfucksake

Listening to it on the cans right now and...wow, what sound. We already knew that but Ronnie was a great lead player when he first joined...they were right to release the '78 show first, it doesn't sound like the same band or the same lead guitar player. I guess Billy "the facile musician that Keith was happy to see gone" Preston has something to do with it. Nice to see they included his tunes here, he must be smilin' up there.

I think it was the departure of Billy Preston, also I think in 1975 the Stones were still trying to go for the "clear difference between lead and rhythm live" dynamic which they had with Taylor, but at some point decided that it was better for Keith and Ronnie to trade leads and solos--To be more like Brian and Keth. As the new guy, stepping into Mick T's shoes for the first time in '75, I think Ronnie did as much as he could to be the "lead player" that Mick was, but then he or the band decided on the "weaving" method instead.
And Billy's contributions to the band are unsung in some ways, he helped contribute to their live sound in the 70s. It's why I hope LA '75 is released on DVD someday because then you'd have DVDs of pretty much every version of the band--The Brian Years, a few DVDs of the Mick Taylor years, The Mid 70s with Ronnie (a transitional period), 1978 Texas, 1981 (the last smaller Stones shows), and 1989 and onward.

The "LA Friday" .flac files' sound (and mix) is revelatory and incredibly engaging.  I won't be kicking out my VGP "Gold" discs, though - there's a great vibe in Mike Millard's AUD capture.  Bless 'em both.

Agreed.
His explanation of how The Stones woke America up to their own music was also good.

Yep, as well as his explanations on the Brian/MickT/Ron interactions. Mick looks "different" in that video, looks like he'd just had his eyes "stretched" or something...interesting that he mentioned Ollie North too, wonder what happened to him after he became uninvited like Billy. Anyone ever remember reading anything about what happened at the time with Billy? I mean he was around at the El Mocambo (doesn't look like he played on stage though) since he started Miss You with Mick over there and then he didn't make it to the Paris sessions...all I could find was "The Stones and Preston parted company in 1977, mainly due to a row over money" on his wikipedia page...

It was what was happening at the time... in 73 Stones still payed faster and shows were quicker, but the enrgy made that moot. By 75, bands were becoming bloated, and playing songs really long and drwn out. The Stones just were a part of it, not even so much willingly, it was just in the atmosphere and what was expected... it is great that we see how they, no matter, could roll and evolve. With every new tour and channge in pop and all the street music too, The Stones ate it up, and kept giving it back to us... by 78, they not only went back to the weave Keith and Brain had been working on and dropping the long extened songs like YCAGWW, Shelter, Sympathy... they weaved, added all new songs and tore through their setlists... with 73, 75 and 78 at our disposal to really listen to, it's like hearing truly three different bands, but the same band... talk about being able to metamorphosize! Non band pops into my mind that not only was able to be themselves, remain authentic, while still being contemporary and reaching so many, in other words being succesful as all get out!!! And add the sexuality, drugs and overall craziness of the creativity... Just listening to Happy on 75, the wheels fall the fuck off, but someohow they get through and end up blowing the doors off the place anyway!!! Fuck !!! Preaching to the choir again, I guess! Enjoy your Passover, happy freedom from bondage day!!!

After his stint playing percussion on TOTA 1975, North was at the center of national
attention during the Iran-Contra affair, a political scandal of the late 1980s. North was
a National Security Council staff member involved in the clandestine sale of weapons
to Iran, which served to encourage the release of U.S. hostages from Lebanon. North
formulated the second part of the plan: diverting proceeds from the arms sales to
support the Contra rebel groups in Nicaragua (funding to the Contras had been
prohibited under the Boland Amendment amidst widespread public opposition in
the U.S. and controversies surrounding human rights abuses by the Contras).

North was charged with several
felonies and convicted of three,
but the convictions were later
vacated, and the underlying
charges dismissed due to the
limited immunity agreement
granted for his pre-trial public
Congressional testimony about
the affair.

In 1991, Oliver North appeared on the first season of The Jerry Springer Show.

In 1994, North unsuccessfully ran for the Senate as the Republican
candidate in Virginia. On the eve of the election, former first lady
Nancy Reagan told a reporter that North had lied to her husband
when discussing Iran-Contra with the former president, effectively
stopping his campaign. North lost to incumbent Democrat Charles
Robb, a son-in-law of (Some Joey Content alert!) President Lyndon
B. Johnson.

North is currently the host of the television show War
Stories with Oliver North, and a regular commentator
on Hannity, both on the Fox News Channel.

He is generally remembered as a dick, and the worst
percussionist the Stones ever worked with.

Amen to everything in this post. It really is like three different bands and they did ride the waves of music well. But in 1975 they were basically doing the same thing as they did in '72 and '73. Many of the songs even had the same arrangements.

1975 to me is really interesting because it's the only live year where Ronnie was THE clearly defined lead guitarist. It showcase his guitar skills in a way future tours and records don't. He is basically doing the same thing on songs like Street Fighting Man or Sympathy that Mick Taylor did, only in his own guitar style.

I'd like some stuff from the Licks Tour. The gig I saw in Utrecht had a nice set, then there was that Exile show in Rotterdam (missed that one..can't have it all I guess) the night after that. Leeds Lungs would be cool for an official release, and there's this show from Shepherds Bush Empire I think I got from Maxy (probably B2B-tour) with a few rarities on the set.  And call me old-fashioned but I want it all on discs.

Other than that, I just hope they release as much deluxe editions as possible in the coming years.

Must be due another release soon?

I'm hearing that the next one (being worked on at the moment) will be a latter day club show - and, if its the one I've been told, its a show that's never circulated as a bootleg.

Hopefully it'll be 'rising from the flames' in a few weeks...

Still unconfirmed officially, though.

both of the shows you listed there are easily available on bootleg.

By 'latter era', I meant Vegas era (1989 onwards)

The following club/theatre shows from that date onwards have never circulated

Toronto 4.9.97
Kona, Hawaii 21.1.98 (Pepsi corporate gig)
Las Vegas 16.11.02 (Private gig)
Toronto 10.8.05
Barcelona 12.7.07 (Deutsche Bank corporate gig)

You're correct about the 1981 show never circulating (it was in Worcester, Ma. 14/9/81). Even the setlist isnt 100% confirmed. Neither of the two gigs at London's 100 Club in 1982 and 1986 have circulated either. The second one was reportedly not even recorded by the band as it was a Stu tribute gig - although according to other rumours, Paul McCartney (who wasnt even there) owns a copy.

I'd be surprised and disappointed if thats not one of the six we get this year. It certainly seems to be the 'fans' choice' along with Brussels, and we got THAT one.

Supposedly there were technical problems with the recordings of the first Mocambo show (4th March 1977) rendering the tapes unusable. As far as I'm aware, all the circulating recordings (including the four LYL songs) come from the following night. (the band intros are definitely from the 5th, anyway, as Mick says 'there's the bottom pincher from last night!').

So, IF we get El Mocambo, I think it'll be the 5th March show - but you never know.

By rights, however, we should have at least one release from the Brian Jones era. It would be a travesty to commemorate 50 years of the Stones as a band and ignore that period.

I'm hoping they continue to do it.... seems like it is a win, win... not alot of overhead involved in getting these out, and they seem to enjoy getting them out. The studio catalog deluxe stuff required word and physical releases which don't make money... gaz, thx for the clue.

My only question about El Macombo is that they have already offered up much of it on Love You Live. Would they offer it again in complete form? I hope you're right Gaza.

And yes, what is the best live Brian Jones' era Stones that has not seen the light of day? The only real official live release, GLIYWI, pretty much blows production wise. Did the recording technology that existed back then capture anything worth releasing today? It would be a sweet treat if they have some good material to offer, but I'm not certain that it exists.

I dont see the existing LYL songs (which have been edited and overdubbed for the most part) being a problem.

After all, there are three songs on the recent Hampton 1981 release that were on 'Still Life' (Lets Spend the Night Together, Shattered, Time is on My Side)

The GLIYWI live ALBUM is a feeble excuse for a 'live album' (it even has two songs which are studio recordings and have audience noise overdubbed!), but the EP of the same name from the UK tour a year earlier is fantastic. IMO their best live release after Ya Yas prior to the Archive series starting.

There are very few circulating concerts from the era with Brian (1962-67) and, unbelievably, there's not a single US audience recording (the only US show that's in cirulation - Brian's last American performance ironically enough - is a show from Honolulu on 28.7.66 which was broadcast on the radio and which also partly circulates as a soundboard)

That show is probably releasable if it were cleaned up a bit . Paris Olympia 1965 too, a show which was professionally recorded.  I doubt it would be possible to make it as high quality as the ones we've had so far, but I think most people wouldnt reasonably expect it to be.

Another problem is that Stones shows back then lasted 25-40 minutes. Any archive release would realistically need to include two of them at the very least.

Blind Date is a bit of a ramshackle show, musically, though, although its not a bad idea to put out a full show (and there were two sets, remember - so there's over 3 hours of music there)

Doubt they'd do it also as theyve already put out a 1978 show and its a similar, but shorter setlist and from the same era.

many will complain that it is 2005, but at the same time, they can bring it hard, and this may be one of those nights. Like others I'm hoping for Leeds and Macambo... Paradiso 95 is a great choice, but all of these have already been out there in some form. Am I excited, oh yea!

Back of My Hand is excellent.

I see love, I see misery
Jamming side by side on the stage

Heres my interpretation: MICK/KEEF love to perform together side by side, but at the same time it makes them miserable. Love/Misery = Mick/Keef.

And this part:
I see Goya's paranoias
I can read it like the back of my hand

Goya was a Spainish artist in the 1700's, and his paintings represented some dark, disturbing subject matter, nightmares and wierd images of brutality, but the artwork was stunningly captivating.

Here's my interpretation: Mick/Keef know there is a disturbing dark side, and it reflects and represents the good/evil within us all, now and throughout the ages.    I love it when Mick/Keef get symbolic!

Every time the cover art for the last 2 official boots was leaked they became available on Google music the following Monday or Tuesday.  I predict we will see this boot within the next 48 hours!!!

It's 30 minutes until monday where I'm sitting, and I'm excited.
Something from the band, that hasn't even been auduence bootlegged... They keep one upping themselves. They are really getting it right, with these archival releases IMO... at least by giving us what we craved, and also by really showing us then can pull out all stops... I'll hope they keep it going, but if they stop at six, they gave us what we wanted and needed, and you can't always get that!!!

With Brussels, they released it on the day they launched the archive website and store. There was no advance warning.

The Hampton and LA Forum releases we had  a bit of notice as they started dropping hints on their facebook page a few days in advance. Someone leaked the LA forum artwork a couple of days in advance, I think, and that let the cat out of the bag.

There hasnt been any officially sanctioned teasers on this one at all, other than someone leaking to me that it was Toronto 2005 on May 20th and a leak of the artwork last week.

Some people speculated 2nd June as a release date. I've no idea where that came from. Just uneducated guesswork, if anything!

it's only uneducated looking when it's wrong!

:pukey

If it had been correct, it would've just been forgotten.

I wemt and tried looking to see when I added it to my iTunes, but some of those dates were wrong, since I had gone from Mp3 and getting Flac files later... I was looking for a pattern, so in that sense, I'm definitely responsible for trying to figure out and guess a release date... but I'm so excited, and I lean towards optimism with this band... even though, I shouldn't!!!

gaz, do you remeber the street dates, er um!... I mean cyberspace launches of the titles?

Brussels was November 17th
Hampton was January 31st
LA Friday was 2nd April.

So by that yardstick another release should be imminent.

Welcome, Rizo.

Interesting 'take' on the title, although I just assumed the 'light the fuse' title for a warm up show was a nod to the fact that it precedes a 'big bang'.... :)

SO...TOMORROW IS THE BIG DAY!!!

I am just guessing...being optimistic...remember when you knew
the release date of a new Stones album...and would rush to your LRS to pick up
that fresh wax!!! I remember getting UNDERCOVER...I had to buy the cassette because the LP was lost in transit
at whatever strip mall was near school...it was OK since I had a cassette player in my car...
didn't have to wait until i got back to the dorms...I grabbed a couple of slices, a cheeseburger  and a coke and ran back to my car...
I think I played it 3 or 4 times before I got out of the parking lot

Correct.

Worth remembering also that the 'Brussels affair 73' digital release came out 4 days before the release of Eagle Rock's 'Some Girls Live in Texas'78' CD & DVD package.

There's no reason why these releases cant come out around the same time.

I saw the Stones in 2006 for two shows in my hometown of Regina. I really, really wish I had a copy of that first show from Oct. 6th. I would love to hear it again. They were really so much better than any of the recent dvd box sets musically. That has to go down as the best concert event I have ever seen in my life. They did a spectacular version of Midnight Rambler that ranks up there with the best of them all. They were really great in 2006. I wish they released my show as opposed to the Scorcese thing. I had binoculars and I was watching them close up. It was like seeing the best concert footage ever.

Welcome sanQ. Yes,it's a growing trend among band tehse days to make all shows on their current tours available for download or purchase. I'd say it makes a much better souvenier than a t-shirt...Although probably not as profitable. :keithpunky

Interesting. They definitely were mixing that Toronto 2005 club show - either it's release has been put back or they changed their minds (hence the delay)

Tokyo 26.2.90 (presuming its that night - they did ten shows, and this one (the 9th night) was broadcast) is one of the best stadium shows from the entire 'Vegas' era.

Killer performances of Sympathy, Gimme Shelter, Almost Hear You Sigh, Midnight Rambler and Happy.

I never liked the mix on recordings I've heard. A bit like Atlantic City - that kind of washy, muddy broadcast mix. Hopefully Bob Clearmountain has worked his magic again.

Maybe they could add the missing numbers from other nights - Rooster , Angie and Play with Fire ?

Great performance though !

Interesting. They definitely were mixing that Toronto 2005 club show - either it's release has been put back or they changed their minds (hence the delay)

Toronto 26.2.90 (presuming its that night - they did ten shows, and this one (the 9th night) was broadcast) is one of the best stadium shows from the entire 'Vegas' era.

Killer performances of Sympathy, Gimme Shelter, Almost Hear You Sigh, Midnight Rambler and Happy.

Hey TOKYO not Toronto  :scary

Ah - Canadians or Japanese. What's the difference. They all look and sound  the same.  ;D

Outstanding choice!

The sound of Charlie's snare/hi-hat on that tour is heavenly. I wish I could have it in my ear all day.

Makes one wonder...if Tokyo was "Plan B" on stand-by... or the next one in the series which was already re-mastered
and just needed packaging with a few bells & whistles added.

I thought the Toronto show was a bit short on content...but that doesn't mean that they
couldn't add content from rehearsals and such....

They were mixing Toronto for release when I was told about it, which was, I think, mid-May or so. It was the same source who gave me the exclusive about the band rehearsing in New York a few days earlier and the London session in December, so he's generally spot on.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it was going to be the next release. For all we know, the Tokyo one may have already been prepared.

Could be (if unlikely) that the comparative negative reaction to them releasing a 2005 show may have made them drop it?

Guess we'll find out as there's still two more releases due this year.

Steel Wheels era was a very strange time of life for me...musically and emotionally...I don't even own SW...mental block thing.
I am glad this is released.

I was looking fwd to the club gig though...it is quite different in concept from all  the mega shows they have put out...

The '89/'90 versions - with Matt Clifford's keyboard 'impersonating' a harmonica - were the utter nadir of that song performance-wise.

Although the intermininable 13-minute 'BTB' versions where Mick licked Lisa's toes every night ran it bloody close.

probably not - although its worth pointing out that theyve generally chosen shows that are highly regarded for the most part so far.

Its weird that they were having releases prepared recently - yet the interviews surrounding each release are from September 2011.

It could be that they've shortlisted several shows for potential release, do the interviews for each, and then select the show at a later date.

In which case, that gives more potential for the series to be extended once they've done the six releases they've promised.

Hopefully this happens, although its bound to continue in some form or another; akin to the bootleg series for dylan - it would be nice to have these released on CD with the same treatment

is there any indication of how well these sell for the stones?

The T shirt with this  album cover is avail at Macy's...

What I find kinda funny is that the Rocket/Shuttle/Missile...with the Japanese flag logo is heading straight into NA...
the US in particular...even DC if you want to stretch it out a bit
Getting even for Nagasaki and Hiroshima??

To have a shuttle / or missile plunging into Japan would not have been so nice-nice...

Just an observation.

I was thinking the same thing. There are 2 left of this original 6.  I believe that Toronto will still be one of them. I doubt they would have announced the release of 6 bootlegs if they didn't have at least 6 picked out.  If we figure that Toronto is one of the last two, then there are many more highly anticipated gigs they could release including El Mocambo, Paradiso, Leeds, something from Brian Jones era, something from the wild setlists of the No Security tour, an official release of the 1972 tour(preferably one of the shows that had rare live performances of Ventilator Blues, Sweet Black Angel, etc.). I'd also like a release from the Voodoo Lounge tour- Stripped isn't really a document of that tour nor would the Paradiso show.  Bottom  line, there are so many more choices and this distribution of these boots is so easy and cost effective I don't know why they wouldn't keep releasing them. Let's hope!

Brussel 73
L.A. Forum 75
Hampton 81
Tokyo Dome 90

Anyone see any pattern here?

Toronto will be definitly in the list, I have my doubts about El Mocambo, seems more probably that it will be 2003 july 30, its already officially released on video "Toronto Rocks".

If the pattern you mean is that the releases are coming from more recent shows each time, thats not the case. Hampton was the 2nd release - LA '75 was the third.

Cant imagine for a second that the Toronto SARS show would be on the shortlist, personally.

I think it was soldatti who said somewhere that around 15,000 was the figure for each (or else it was the figure for Brussels).

Doesnt sound like a lot, but then sales were never really the main reason to justify these releases, and the production costs are minimal compared to a 'physical' live album release.

Thanks Gazza, 15,000 is more than i would have suspected, i figured 5000 - 10000 though was unsure as I wondered who other than 'hardcore' fans were downloading as its relatively quiet in regard to advertising - although considering they have 10m Facebook followers i'm sure an ad there is almost as good as / better than traditional TV and magazine ads

True, although as most of the posts on facebook seem to come from people who think the Stones are uploading the messages AND that they may read the banal replies, I wouldnt imagine they'd be the market most likely to be salivating at downloading stuff like 'LA Friday'.

Maybe I'm wrong, though.

In fairness, after the abominable way Ultrastar ran their old official site, its good to see that the band's PR machine have done a reasonable job so far info-wise with social media sites.

Live At The Tokyo Dome (Live 1990) - Stones Archive Bootleg Series Vol. 4

This digital live album was officially made available on Google Music (MP3 only) on 10th July 2012 and on Stones Archive (MP3 & FLAC) on 11th July 2012.

Here's what Stones Archive says about this release :

Quote:
Denied permission to play in Japan in 1973, the band were finally welcomed with open arms in 1990, when they played a ten night residency at the 55,000 capacity Tokyo Dome. This album was recorded at the show on 26th February, and features Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood and Bill Wyman, who in August of that year, would play his last ever show with the Rolling Stones. The touring band included Bobby Keys, Chuck Leavell, Lisa Fischer, Cindy Mizelle, Bernard Fowler, Matt Clifford and the Uptown Horns. The Steel Wheels/ Urban Jungle tour became the highest grossing tour of all time. But it’s not just the figures that set this show apart from others, the Rolling Stones revisited songs from their psychedelic period such as “2000 Light Years From Home” and “Ruby Tuesday”, with cosmic results. In 2012 Bob Clearmountain applied the mix.

The arrangement was supposedly six releases in a year, so you'd expect them every two months or so....the last one was a bit behind schedule, though.

17/11/11  - Brussels 73
31/01/12  - Hampton 81
02/04/12  - LA 75
10/07/12  - Tokyo 90

Maybe another one before the end of September with the sixth one out before Christmas?

Havent heard anything as yet.

i wonder would they consider pushing new releases into next year, the rest of the year is full of stones stuff, new great hits stuff to sell, and new shows to sell, putting out another bootleg release might go under the radar a bit - though i imagine the people buying these will be aware of a new product but it might be overcrowded

'Brussels Affair' was released 4 days before the simultaneous releases of the Some Girls deluxe and 'Some Girls Live in texas '78' DVD/CD combo.

Probably the most exciting week of Stones releases in aeons.

I dont think it really matters. These download releases are aimed at a very small market compared to the stuff Universal or Eagle Rock put out.

Not a sausage.

Have heard absolutely nothing about a new release and they havent even started the usual teases on the band's facebook page yet.

It could of course be the Toronto '05 club show that was prepared for release in the spring and for which some artwork leaked, but I dont know if that project was just put back for later in the series or if they just ready a shortlist of shows for release (and even doing the interview promos for each)  before making a final decision at the last minute

links didn't work, but I sought it out, grabbed it, on my iTunes and listening now... I'm excited about this one... I really hope el Macombo is next and last... or Leeds as my 2nd choice... my copy of Leeds is good enough, but incomplete... this is a tough one... why can't they give us both... jeez we might get something completely different too...

Quick download and have listened on headphones to the first 4 songs.

The verdict: Guitars way up in the mix- GUITARS.

19th Nervous Breakdown is recast as a mid-tempo blues - it's great.

Ronnie's guitar begins She's So Cold - interesting.

Best live archive release since LA Friday?

I was at the last club show they just released. At the Pheonix in Toronto to kick off Bigger Bang. I had such a blast. But listening to it now, I gotta say that it shouldnt of been released. Band doesnt sound up to snuff. Overall guitar sound is a bit weak.

But thing is I had such a fun time. You can really loose yourself being at these type of shows. But sometimes its not better to hear the clips afterwards.

I know from having been to a few club gigs that everyone had a fuckin A great time last night. But maybe its not a show we should wish for them to release.

I say go back in vaults and dig out the full Mocambo or the Boston 81 gig.

The Toronto Licks club show also sounds much better than the Pheonix one.

I personally think the Stones should release a classic show for the 6th release. In addition, with the success of these archive releases they could release each show of the new tour in the same format. they record each show already-all that would be need is for them to be mixed a bit and then they could be downloaded a day or two later for $5.00 a clip. That would cost the Stones very little and make the fans happy- I'd probably buy every show of the tour at that price. The Stones would make some money and the fans will be happy as hell- it's a win-win!!!

I actually really like the guitars in light the fuse. They're rough, but rough in a cool way because it was loud and Ronnie and Keith fought for the fills. By the end of the tour the guitars just sounded tired.

Light The Fuse is ok but is a warm up show you can' t expect the band in top form.Besides that I like She' s So Cold and Dead Flowers with Ronnie doing a great job.But the best are Back Of My Hand, with that classic rough stones blues and Infamy. Both sounded better than the studio versions.I think the opening show in Boston was a better option.

So what does everyone think of the new release? Seems like a big surprise, especially since they already released Hampton. To me the highlights are Angie which I never heard from this tour before and Hangfire with the horns. I have to give it a full listen today.

I really hope the Stones continue with this concept and release more shows-its been one of the best things they have done in a long time!

The sixth (and final?) instalment in the Stones Archive series is now available on Google Play (and presumably will soon be on stonesarchive.com) and is the concert at Roundhay Park, Leeds on 25th July 1982 which marked the final show of the '81-82 tour and which was also Ian Stewart's final gig with the band. It has previously only been available as an audience recording. Price is $9.49, which is a bit of a hike from previous releases, I believe.

Surprising and somewhat anti-climactic choice as we've already had a show from this tour (Hampton 18.12.81) with an almost identical setlist. However, 1982 is a tour thats quite poorly documented in terms of soundboard material (just a couple of shows exist as partial soundboards) so in that sense it's something different.

On a side note (and this has probably a lot to do with this release coming out so early), Google Play is now also available FROM TODAY in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Spain - so if you live in those countries you should also be able to purchase the mp3 version right away.

Sounds great.  Guitars sound better than Hampton.  Google now has it listed for $4.99 instead of the $9.49 I paid 4 hours ago - but who cares? I've paid less than $40 for six outstanding full concerts in the past year.  Keep 'em coming!

I've read nothing at any time to suggest that there will be any more in the series - when it was launched, the media reports said the deal with google music was for 'six releases over the next year' and they've managed that with about four days to spare.

It'd be a hell of a shame if they stopped it now.

I've read nothing at any time to suggest that there will be any more in the series - when it was launched, the media reports said the deal with google music was for 'six releases over the next year' and they've managed that with about four days to spare.

It'd be a hell of a shame if they stopped it now.

We got what we got, and we better like it... this band has always left us wanting more, it's part of their appeal... They're bigger than U.S. Steel!!!

I love that on my download, we got a tracklist error, 12 beat of burden, someone typed in the track number, and it must've remained unchecked. good times, can't wait to listen today. this is probably better than Hampton, and too bad they didn't dig deeper into the non soundboard bootlegged before stuff for this series, but oh well... I'm still very happy... I'm never going to get sick of Brussels 73 and Texas 78... and 78 wasn't even part of this, but still on my bucket list...
will they ever do more of this again?
