Title: To Embed or not to Embed
Post by PartyDoll MEG on Apr 15th, 2008 at 8:10am
Voodoo, you taught me well in the art of embedding.

Is that not allowed on this board?

Or is there an extra feature you can add to allow it?

Or is there a new tutorial I need to take on the art of the embed?

Once you embed..you always wanna embed! :willya

Hey Meg - the reason we can't use Embed is because it's an HTML command and HTML doesn't work on this board (yet).  It might be it's an option that Voodoo has to turn on and it might be that this board doesn't allow for HTML.  I've been looking around for a new message board myself and lots of them don't for some reason.  I've tried any number of klugey fixes and have yet to find the one that will allow for YouTube embeds.

Figured as much, Nasty!

Old habits die hard....

It was just a nice feature I'd gotten used to on the old board.  Not a techy, but it probably uses too much bandwidth or some such gobbledygook terminology to do it that way...

And hell, at work I can't even see them anyways... ;)

When we were deciding for the new software we had two options available in our console (rocksoff.org control panel) phpBB and YaBB, in the first it is possible to embed, is the one we use for our message board in Spanish but the problem is that for a header we only have a limited number of characters so we can't have a header like the traditional Rocks Off header with texts, images, links to several places, etc

Yabb provide that feature but we can't find an option in the control panel to allow the use of HTML codes

In the meantime please use the "link" instead of the "embed" when posting videos

Hey Voodoo, I was just over at the YaBB forum looking around and someone there claimed that embed was a standard feature with the 2.1 bulletin board, but they were typical tech support in that they didn't explain it any more than that. ::)

Good detective work, Nasty!!

We may be saved.

After all we all wanna see the FYGWY video from Voodoo's collection in "embed fashion", don't we?!! ;)

Lets see if someone around here can answer the question Voodoo asked over there.

Quote:
My version is 2.1

1.- How can I allow HTML codes in this version?
2.- If I cannot do it how can I upgrade to 2.2?

I launched my message board from the website control panel when I click for a new version it downloads a zip file but I don't know how to install it.

Can you un-zip that file to a new folder, Voodoo?
is there an .exe file in it?

well that's what I would try. I hope they respond fast on the other forum.

now this is a test about that Tele-type icon - lets see

Please enlighten me--what is embed?

Title: Re: To Embed or not to Embed

Well FG..it is how we used to put up our youtubes on the old board and somehow that format is not allowed on this board, due to HTML, whatever the heck that is...

That is as much enlightening as this chicky can give you ;)

Sent an email to Voodoo last night about this very thing.  There is software available that will enable embedding of videos on YaBB codex message boards. I'm sure he's busy just getting this board off the ground at the moment, but it's worth looking into when he gets some time. For those who'd like to see for themselves, it's here: http://www.boardmod.org/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=newsy2;action=display;num=1159360295

That sounds promising and hopefully works like a breeze, GTRM.

Quote:
Installation
Apply the mod, upload the changed YaBBC.pl and Post.pl.
Upload the changed ubbc.js in /yabbfiles/Templates
Upload MediaCenter.pl in /Sources and chmod it equal to the other pl's.
Upload mediaplayer.swf to /yabbfiles (in your public html area)
Take a drink and enjoy multi media embedding.

you need something like this

it is a mod that is installed by the admins (looks very straightforward to install)...

i am sure there are other options for yabb, but this looks like it has a very nice feature set...

Thanks macdaddy!!

I can't find a way to install mods on the board control panel, I already asked for help to my host supplier. Do you know how to install it?

Title: Re: To Embed or not to Embed

it looks like you have to d/l the zip and then change a few perl scripts. then you will need to upload those scripts to the host dir. this usually done via ftp, and is probably how you put yabb on the ro.org server in the firstplace...  just now you are modding/replacing a few of those files, and adding a few more...

you need to mod the files correctly, but that really is nothing more than an elaborate copy/paste exercise...

Oh me is getting excited....

I will get to embed again..

as soon as Voodoo figures out all this gobbledygook :willya [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

I partly agree with Macdaddy

you have to d/l the zip and unzip it.

upload these scripts to the host dir - they will overwrite/ replace some files and add new ones.

you don't need to mod or place those files individually - just dump 'em in the main script of  the appropriate folders, as old files need to be overwritten.

so no elaborate copy/paste exercise...and no changing of perl scripts by hand.

well at least that's what I gathered from that other mod-board.

but whatever you do Voodoo, it's an open-heart operation on the only working board, make sure to have a current backup. backup.

did I mention backup?  :willya

well, i did say that i did NOT read anything about the specifics, but i do know how those types of add-ons work, as i have installed them, and sometimes you have to type the path specific to your host server and dirs manually. kudos if that is not the case with this particular modification...

i wholeheartedly agree with this.

i would even go further, and suggest that you (the admins) are sure you know HOW TO BACK UP the bbs (via trying it), and then saving a hard copy of all the dirs that you are gonna add to (download the dirs in question via ftp) BEFORE attempting to install the add-on.

having said that, it will likely be easier for you to install the add-on than it was for me to type this post, so go for it - it looks cool. and if the thing bombs, and you cant restore the db, well - at least you only lost a few days' worth of posting :D

Several times. I fiddled around a bit but couldn't pull it off. I thought maybe the problem was similar to Maxy's board but they don't work exactly the same way of course.
