2007 European ‘A Bigger Bang’ Tour
Overview
With the previous summer’s European Tour having been curtailed to a
paltry 19 concerts, it was inevitable that 2007 would see a return to the
Stones’ second biggest market, and in March 2007 Mick confirmed at a low-key
press interview that the Stones would kick off a 12-week tour leg which would
end up with them playing 31 shows in 21 countries. As well as returning to some
of the cities who lost out due to cancellations in 2006, the Stones returned to
some other cities (London, Paris) and visited some eastern European countries
for the first time (Serbia, Montenegro, and Romania). The Stones had also confirmed their first
ever show in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, but this was later changed due to
security issues to Warsaw in Poland. Twenty-seven
of the shows were outdoors, with the remainder being a trio of arena dates in
London to end the tour and, on the 45th anniversary of the band’s
first ever concert, a corporate show for Deutsche Bank in Barcelona. In early
June, the Stones headlined a festival for the first time in over 40 years when
they topped the bill at the Isle Of Wight Festival. The most iconic moment of the tour however
was surely the Stones’ return to Russia where they played in the historic
Palace Square in St Petersburg. The
significance of performing ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ in that location can’t have
been lost on anyone.
Performance wise, some of the early shows saw the Stones a bit
rusty, but things definitely improved as the tour progressed. The penultimate
stop on the tour was Slane Castle near Dublin, where I had experienced my first
ever Stones show 25 years earlier. Back then, I was amazed as to how much
energy Mick had after a high energy performance of over two hours as he
sprinted the entire width of the stage but assumed it would be my only chance
to ever see them. They were almost 40, after all! Witnessing him exhibit similar boundless
enthusiasm at the end of the 2007 concert there at the age of 64 it was like we
all had come full circle. It hadn’t been
the easiest tour for the band, but it was clear there was still some more fuel
in the tank. The two-year world tour wound down with three nights at the 02 in
London, with the Stones saying farewell on a high.
There are no official releases from this tour leg. Recommended shows
– Paris and the three London shows.
Number of shows - 31
