Part 2: Far East &
Australasian Tour
2006 Asian and Australian ‘A Bigger
Bang’ Tour Overview
There wasn’t really much of a break for the
Stones after the Robin Hood benefit, as eight days later they kicked off a four
weeklong tour leg which took in ten shows in Japan, China, Australia and New
Zealand. The most noteworthy event of this leg was the band’s
long awaited first visit to mainland China (they had played in Hong Kong in
2003 – a territory which is subject to a separate and less stringent governing
system than its neighbour). The Chinese
authorities had banned the inclusion of four songs from ‘Forty Licks’ in 2002
and the Stones were advised not to perform them at their concert in Shanghai
(only two of the songs – ‘Honky Tonk Women’ and
‘Brown Sugar’ were part of their usual set anyway, so it hardly made for a
major shakeup. ‘Let’s Spend The Night Together’ was presumably censored for its
suggestive content although I’m at a loss as to why ‘Beast of Burden’ was
deemed inappropriate. Maybe it’s the ‘make love’ line? You tell me. If that’s the case, a few more risqué numbers
must have been lost in translation and slipped through the net). The Shanghai
show was filmed for Chinese television but never broadcast. The sole televised concert from this leg was
a fine performance in Saitama which was broadcast in Japan a few weeks
later. The final part of the tour
consisted of a stadium and arena show in two Australian cities followed by two
stadium shows in New Zealand after which everything almost fell apart thanks to
a little palm tree.
Three songs from Saitama and six songs from Shanghai (including a
charming duet with Chinese rock star and longtime fan Cui Juan on ‘Wild
Horses’) were included on the ‘Biggest Bang’ DVD in 2007.
Number of concerts – 10
Number in circulation – 10
Recommended shows – All the Japanese shows circulate as soundboards. Saitama is probably the best of them. Melbourne is the best of the four shows from
the Australia/New Zealand part of the tour.
Personnel
– Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ron Wood with Darryl Jones
(bass), Chuck Leavell (keyboards), Bernard Fowler and Lisa Fischer (backing
vocals & percussion),
Blondie Chaplin (backing vocals, percussion & occasional
guitar), Bobby Keys (tenor sax) and The New West Horns – Tim Ries (sax ,
Michael Davis (trombone) and Kent Smith (trumpet).
