2006 North and South American  A Bigger Bang’ Spring Tour Overview

As per usual, the Stones took a month off over the holiday season before returning to North America to resume the Bigger Bang tour.  Kicking things off in Montreal, the band played 11 arena dates in addition to performing a three-song set in Detroit before a worldwide TV audience as the prestigious Half Time Show at Superbowl XL.  It’s worth noting that whilst most acts play at the Superbowl using a pre-recorded backing track in case things go wrong, the Stones’ performance was totally ‘live’ – albeit with a brief time delay so that ABC could censor a couple of words such as ‘cocks’ or ‘cum’ in case the prime-time audience would be traumatised.

The Stones then returned to Latin America for the first time since 1998 playing six shows in Puerto Rico (their first visit there), Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina.  Economic issues were again an issue in South America with the band’s visit to Argentina consisting of just two stadium shows in Buenos Aires despite a demand for tickets which would have enabled them to have sold out several nights.  The sole Brazil show would be one for the history books, however – the city of Rio de Janeiro funded a free concert on the city’s Copacabana Beach. An estimated 1.5 million people showed up even though the concert was broadcast live in Brazil and streamed in full (with a slight time delay) worldwide as a webcast on AOL.  Visually, the Copacabana show made for an astonishing sight and the Stones delivered a superb performance.  Indeed, this entire leg of the Bigger Bang tour saw the best series of gigs of the whole tour.  Following the second Mexican show, the Stones returned to the US for four arena dates before closing this leg of the tour with a benefit concert for the Robin Hood Foundation at New York’s Radio City Music Hall.  (The charity organisation to alleviate poverty in New York is named for the mythical 13th century English nobleman who stole from the rich to give to the poor.  Tickets for the show ranged from $250 to $7,500, hopefully the attendees saw the irony!)

There are quite a few official releases from this tour leg. The Superbowl show was included in the official NFL DVD release of the event.  Sixteen of the twenty songs from the Copacabana concert and five songs from the first Buenos Aires show featured on the ‘Biggest Bang’ DVD released in June 2007 with the full Copacabana show being released in audio and visual formats on ‘Live at Copacabana Beach 2006’ in 2021.
