On this
tour, the Stones played 3 types of setlists according to the type of venue,
sometimes with all three in the same city. The setlists are therefore colour
coded thus:
Arena shows (hite) : |
Stadium shows (red) : |
Theatre / club shows (yellow) : |
Songs performed on a
b-stage at the arena and stadium shows are asterisked (‘*’)
2003 Australian & Asian ‘Licks’
tour overview
With barely a few days off, the Stones flew on to Sydney to kick off
a two-month long tour leg which took in 18 shows in Australia, Japan, Singapore
and (for the first time) India. There
were no shows in New Zealand this time and the 8-date Australian leg consisted
of one theatre and two stadium shows in Sydney plus arena shows in Melbourne
and Brisbane. The opening night at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre was a humdinger,
with the Stones opening with ‘Midnight Rambler’ for the only time ever and
being joined onstage by Angus and Malcolm Young on what would be the first of
their six guest appearances on three continents that year. The Japan leg consisted of a mix of arena and
indoor dome shows before the Stones returned to Singapore for the first time
since 1965 for two shows and then closed the tour leg with a pair of stadium
shows in India. In between, the Stones
were again thwarted in their long-held ambition to play China – on this
occasion not by bureaucratic issues but by the outbreak of the SARS pandemic,
which resulted in the four planned concerts there all having to be
cancelled. Another planned show in Bangkok
had to be cancelled for logistical problems.
Unfortunately for the band’s fervent fanbase in Latin America, there
would be no shows in that region on the Licks tour, primarily due to unstable
economic conditions.
Nothing from this tour leg has been released officially. However,
most of the show in Bangalore on April 4th was broadcast on TV in
India and circulates on video. The
Stones manage to put on a pretty decent performance despite having to play in
almost monsoon-like conditions. The bootleg
DVD isn’t called ‘Dripping Away in Bangalore’ without good reason.
Number of shows – 18
Number in circulation – 15 (missing are Mumbai and both Singapore
shows)
Recommended shows – Sydney (Enmore Theatre), Tokyo (Budokan Arena),
Yokohama.
Personnel – Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ron Wood
with Darryl Jones (bass), Chuck Leavell (keyboards), Bernard Fowler and Lisa
Fischer (backing vocals & percussion), Blondie Chaplin (backing vocals,
percussion & occasional guitar), Bobby Keys (tenor sax) and The New West
Horns – Tim Ries (sax , Michael Davis (trombone) and Kent Smith (trumpet).

the second song but after |

Keith started
playing ‘If You Cant Rock |

they improvised and |

played that song instead. |
